Cordier Auctions To Host Student Locati Auctions Held A Auction For HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College S t r o n g O c t o b e r O n l i n e S a l e The current auctioneering class at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will hold its Student Auction on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Cordier Auctions & Appraisals in Harrisburg, Pa. Fifteen students from all over the state are currently enrolled in HACC’s auctioneering program, which is instructed by Charlene Caple. The student auction is included in each class’ curriculum to provide students with experience in all facets of auction execution. Students had their first experience on the auction block while selling apple pies at the National Apple Harvest Festival in Arendtsville, Pa., in October to benefit Donate Life. The HACC 2013 class includes a father-daughter duo from Pequea, Lancaster County. Brian Callahan and his 17-year-old daughter, Katelyn, are taking the class together this fall. Brian has been a long-time coin collector, and he and Katelyn have attended auctions together for many years. When Brian was

registering for this fall’s class, he found that there were two open spaces. He suggested to his daughter that the class would be a good opportunity to learn about something she was interested in. He also saw it as a wonderful career opportunity for his daughter. Both Brian and Katelyn are interested in coins, and Katelyn is also enthusiastic about livestock auctions. On Nov. 17, the class will be selling a variety of items, including gold and silver coins, assorted jewelry, farm implement manuals, Hubley and John Deere toys, clocks,

stoneware, Meerschaum pipes, sports items, fishing, and other various collectibles. Notes David Cordier, President/CEO of Cordier Auctions and Appraisals, who is an alumnus of the HACC auctioneering program: “We are delighted to host the event to support both the students and HACC.” The auction, open to the public, will be held at Cordier Auctions & Appraisals, located at 1500 Paxton St. in Harrisburg, Pa., at 1 p.m. For more information, visit www.CordierAuction.com or call 717-731-8662.

Locati Auctions of Maple Glen, Pa., presented its October online auction from Oct. 7 to 21. The firm had 880 bidders registered for the auction from 40 different countries. They sold 392 lots. “Most of this sale consisted of material from a good estate in Haddonfield, N.J.,” commented co-owner Michael Locati. “There were some very nice finds that the market responded well to.” Highlights include a welldone landscape of blue bonnets by Robert Wood that had been in the same estate for over 40 years. It sold for

$16,000. A Faberge-style jade frog with diamond eyes sold for $750, an Old Sheffield platter sold for $400, and a pair of Republic period Chinese porcelain vases sold for a strong $2,000. Also, an unusual pair of Vienna spelter plaques brought $1,500 and a rare wooden souvenir fan signed by famous 19th-centu-

ry musicians sold well above estimate for $1,800. Other sales included a pair of marble garden urns that sold for $2,900 and a Korean scroll painting by Chai Yong Shin that realized $900. For more information on this or upcoming sales, call 215-619-2873 or visit www.locatiauctions.com.

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Antiques Shows: The Land Of Hopes And Dreams chairman was one such new “prowler,” and after the sixth trip past a particular booth, he broke down and made the first of several purchases. Western shows are much like Eastern shows in that there is a close friendship among many of the dealers. The 12 who did our show were all friends, although not all of them did shows regularly. Each was an expert, with decades of experience in his or her own field. For me, and frankly for anyone who goes to antiques shows, their knowledge is a wonderful resource to learn about whatever you collect. The best dealers that I know are willing and happy to

share their knowledge with collectors. They are there to help create and build collections. So an easy tip is to ask questions of these folks. Learn from the masters!

So did I find anything at our show? Well…let’s just say that it will be quite a while before I can pay off my debts for purchases. And I will start dreaming about next year….

Some years ago when I worked in Lancaster, our museum used to sponsor a benefit antiques show. It was always a great event, and I have to confess that I loved just spending hours walking the floor looking at the booths. It was, as I once described it, a place of “hopes and dreams.” What I meant by “hopes and dreams” was that in the show there were so many antique “treasures” to be found in every corner and every shelf, and every case held something that was waiting to be found. I remember a conversation with our show committee chair, who was also a passionate collector, and we both commented that we could not understand people who came to shows and wandered around with a blasé look on their faces. We decided there and then that there were collectors and there were lookers. The latter did not get it, and the former were addicted to it! I know that some

The show was a huge success, with a heavy gate and most importantly - sales for the dealers! The latter (dealer sales) is actually the biggest issue for the success of any antiques show. Our dealers did sell, and so the show is coming back for a second year (and hopefully third, fourth, fifth, etc. years). In the West, antiques shows are few and far between, so many of the buyers are completely unfamiliar with how they run. Much of our advertising has been explaining what an “antiques show and sale” is and what you will see. There just was no common reference point for that phrase, and so it had to be explained to folks. Many on my show committee have never attended a show, and it was great fun to watch them start prowling the floor looking for treasures. My show committee

collectors think that shows are often “picked out” by dealers and collectors long before they get into it. This is certainly not true! I recall a friend who found a superb Ephrata Cloister fraktur on the last day of a York antiques show. The piece had been passed by dozens of specialists who failed to see the piece for what it was. The best thing was that the price was a real bargain, considering the rarity of the piece! This past week, the Millicent Rogers Museums in Taos, N.M.,where I serve as the executive director, had its first benefit antiques show ever. My wife commented to me that I looked like a kid in a candy store as I prowled the show floor looking at the goods being offered for sale. It was a flashback of sorts to the last show that I was involved with, for sure!

Customers at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center this month will discover just how extensive the variety of antique boxes and containers is. “Box It Up” is the theme of the November special display, and dozens of unique and practical boxes and containers can be found in the case. From a humble shoe shine box to a rare metal country store bin, there are boxes for every taste and pocketbook. As might be expected, there are cigar boxes, jewelry boxes, file boxes, and trinket boxes. There are tool and cutlery boxes, as well as old tobacco tins that have been turned into lunch boxes. If it’s a container with a lid, it’s a valid part of the display. Both veteran and new antique collectors can agree that a unique old box still serves the valuable purpose of storage, just as it might have done 50 or 150 years ago. This time of year is a great

Stair Galleries Sets World Record For Faberge Hardstone Figure, Selling For $5,980,000 A Rhinebeck, N.Y., attic treasure soared to a world record price in the span of 15 minutes during intense bidding to a packed sales room at Stair Galleries on Oct. 26. In addition to the lively bidding in the room, there was an active group of phone bidders. The rare Faberge Imperial figure ultimately sold to a phone bidder for $5.98 million including premium ($5.2 million, hammer price) against a pre-sale auction estimate of $500,000 to $800,000. The last hardstone Faberge Imperial figure sold for $1.8 million at Sotheby’s in New York City in 2005. Stair Galleries is a regional auction house located at 549 Warren St. in Hudson, N.Y. Nicholas II commissioned Fabergé to produce this portrait figure of Nikolai N. Pustynnikov, the personal Cossack bodyguard (KamerKazak, or C h a m b e rCossack) to the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and also a second figure, of the Kamer-Kazak to the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna in 1912. The figure was found in an attic by the executor of an estate in Rhinebeck. It was purchased at Hammer Galleries in Manhattan by George Davis in December 1934, and it has been in the

same family ever since. The figure was known to collectors, but the whereabouts was unknown until recently. The dated “1912” Imperial figure stands 7 inches tall. The total number of hardstone carvings of human figures produced by Fabergé is probably no more than 50. They are therefore extremely rare, on a level of rarity with the Imperial Easter Eggs, and the portrait figures, depictions of known historical persons rather than simply “types,” are considered the rarest kinds. The buyer was Wartski, the Londonbased jeweler who is the jeweler to the Queen of England. They specialize in Russian pieces, most notably Faberge. It’s not clear if they were purchasing it for stock or a private client. According to the London firm, “the purchase of the figure is a continuation of our long running tradition of acquiring Imperial Russian works of art. Wartski (jewelers) were Armand Hammer’s prime rivals in the 1920s and 1930s in buying the confiscated Imperial treasures from the Soviet government. We have over the years owned 20 of these rare hardstone figures, as well as a dozen of the legendary Imperial Fabergé Easter Eggs.” For further information, visit www.stairgalleries.com.

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends of the Mid-20th Century “Come Follow The Band: Collectible Musician Figurines” pieces are marked simply “Made in Japan” (or, for several years after World War II, “Occupied Japan”). Also readily available: U.S.-made figurines, sold at dime stores and gift shops during the 1940s, when overseas imports, (particularly those from Japan), were curtailed due to the war. There are also souvenir pieces designed specifically to rekindle memories of farflung ports-of-call, once weary travelers returned home. Among them: musical black cats from Poland ... Italian street entertainers ... Tyrolean “oompah” bands, Peruvian clay “musician whistles,” and dapper

instrumentalists fashioned of Czech glass. Most wood, ceramic, or china sets (trios, quartets, quintets, and so on) are in the $15-$25 range, especially those with a “Made in Japan” marking. Individual figurines of this sort sell for as little as $5. Also a bargain at $15-$25: cross-collectibles, such as salt-and-pepper musicians. Sets ringing up at under $50 include musicians handcrafted in other countries, musicians still accompanied by their original packaging, and musicians made of unusual materials.

“Cool Cats,” a musical memento of the 1950s. The ceramic “hepcats” on wood bases with metal labels are marked “Bristol Import (Japan);” 5 1/2 Black “Jazz Band,” ceramic, 3 inches high, tallest figure. $75- inches high, five-piece set, $40$100/set. $50.

1125 Arnold Avenue,

Sniffing Out Fake Snuff Bottles expected variations can be seen in snuff bottles made from these natural materials, so any bottles that are solid in color and show no variation in color or shading are most likely created from manmade materials. Some fake amber or coral bottles will not only be solidly colored, but they will also have a “dirty wash” on their surfaces to give them a false look of age. The rich, red color of cinnabar snuff bottles is as appealing as their beautifully detailed carvings. Antique cinnabar snuff bottles are lacquered to entrap its high mercury content, thereby preventing it from being toxic to humans. (Centuries ago, cinnabar miners only had a three-year life expectancy, and those who worked with cinnabar in ovens only lived about six months.) However, a broken cinnabar piece can release the toxin and make the item potentially dangerous. Because of this, most modern “cinnabar” jewelry and other pieces are actually made of manmade materials or painted wood. In its natural state, cinnabar is actually a crystal, but it is ground into a powdery pigment and encased in lacquer, which is why cinnabar snuff bottles should have at least a sheen or at best, a shiny, lacquered surface. As with reproductions in most other fields of collecting, molded or carved images are usually not as sharp or detailed as they are on originals. However, it’s just the

resin or plastic. 2. Identical carved or painted bottles. 3. Purportedly amber, coral, or turquoise bottles with no color variations. 4. Supposed cinnabar bottles with red interiors or too much detail. 5. Cinnabar in a color other than red is a modern imitation material. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a few: The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society (http://www.snuffbottle.org); “Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Adventures and Studies of a Collector,” by Lilla S. Perry; “Collector’s Book of Snuff Bottles,” by Bob C. Stevens. hand, no two will be exactly alike. Therefore, if you see carved or painted bottles that are carbon copies of each other, you’re looking at mass-produced modern pieces. Also beware of prices that are too good to be true. Many modern pieces of manmade materials are being misrepresented as authentic natural materials and being listed with starting prices from under $1 to somewhat higher prices that are still much lower than what they would be if the pieces were true antiques or made from the materials that the sellers claim. Ironically, most of these pieces are being made in China. Irregularity in color can be a good indicator of an authentic piece; this is often the case with snuff bottles made from amber, turquoise, and coral. Both amber and red coral have color shading variations, while turquoise has a matrix and veins or marbling as well as distinct light and dark colors. These

large amounts of money were being spent on buying highly artistic bottles. Those bottles were so prized that they developed value equal to currency, even being used to buy political favors of all kinds. By the time snuff use worked its way throughout the general population, it became both a habit and a common means of greeting, where offering a pinch of snuff to someone you met on the street or welcomed into your home was akin to shaking hands. The beauty of snuff bottles wasn’t taken for granted - people began collecting them as early as the 18th century. Having a particularly exquisite snuff bottle would positively impact a person’s overall societal status. Much like Japanese netsuke, snuff bottles were made in every material available to Chinese craftsmen. Wood, stone, glass, ivory, jade, coral, tourmaline, amber, and many other materials were turned into objets d’art no more than three inches high. The most coveted snuff bottles today are those that were actually created to hold snuff between the 17th and early 20th centuries, although their production continues to this day, mainly for display and collecting purposes (snuff bottles are still used in some areas of the world). In 2011, an 18th century enameled glass snuff bottle with images of a Chinese landscape on one side, a woman’s portrait on the other and topped with a pearl stopper broke all previous records when it sold at auction for over $3.2 million to a private Asian collector. I attended an auction last year where every antique snuff bottle sold for thousands of dollars. When collectors are that keen and prices are that high, fakes abound. In general, all authentic antique snuff bottles are handmade in some

way - either entirely, or, at the very least, hand-painted. For example, any bottles that were produced from molds would have hand-painted designs or carvings. Reproductions are most commonly made from materials such as resin or plastic. The photo accompanying this column that appears to be a light-colored carved ivory snuff bottle is actually a modern resin piece that was being sold by an auctioneer as “possibly ivory.” Because the crowd knew what it was, it sold for only $5. But this isn’t always the case - some resins are sold online as ivory and other natural materials, and sometimes without handling the piece or seeing it up close, buyers don’t realize they’re being fooled. In fact, an exact duplicate of that $5 snuff bottle was being represented as “antique carved cinnabar” in an online auction, with an estimate of $100-$150. The white color alone was its tell: cinnabar is red; any white items labeled cinnabar are modern imitations (more about cinnabar later). Because most antique snuff bottles were made by

Chinese snuff bottles are miniature works of art whose roots lie deep in the 17th century Qing Dynasty. Originally used as an overall curative for everything from colds, vision problems, and headaches to epidemics, stomach ailments, and much more, snuff was first used exclusively in dynastic houses from the 17th through most of the 18th century. In fact, many of the original bottles were made by fine craftsmen within the dynastic houses themselves. Eventually, the practice of using snuff spread to the higher social classes; by then,

The No. 68 is a floorstanding astronomical regulator, impressive at 105 inches tall and boasting excellent color and patina. The silvered 14inch bronze dial is signed “E. The Howard No. 74 astronomical observatory regulator is 60 inches tall, with a case that has an iron back, cast in one piece, on which the movement bracket and mahogany case front are mounted. The weight-driven movement has Graham deadbeat escapement with jeweled pallets and a clustered 4-jar mercurial pendulum. The Howard No. 7 figure 8

regulator is 50 inches high and housed in a refinished walnut case with carved crests, reverse painted throat and lower glasses and black painted weight baffle. The 12-inch painted metal dial has black Roman hour numerals, blued open moon hands and a dial that is signed “E. Howard & Co., Boston.” The dial has in-painting and a varnished overcoat. Of the two R. J. Horner grandfather clocks being offered, the one expected to command higher dollars is a carved mahogany 9-tube grandfather clock in good

original condition with the original finish (est. $40,000$60,000). The brass dial has a 12inch silvered chapter ring with engraved decorations, while the case is beautifully carved, Astronomical regulator attributed to the U.S. Clock Company, in a large carved walnut case, 112 inches tall (est. $15,000-$30,000).

includes hundreds of incredibly rare images from JFK’s 1946 Congressional and 1952 Senate campaigns, including those of a young Kennedy in the dugout with Ted Williams and other Red Sox players at Fenway Park. On Sunday, the third session will consist of a collection from the heir of Hollywood mogul Milton Ebbins, manager, business partner and close friend of actor Peter Lawford, President Kennedy’s brother-in-law. Together, Milton Ebbins and Peter Lawford served as liaisons between Hollywood and the Kennedy White House during the golden age of Camelot. The collection in this sale includes the records of Chrislaw Productions, the production company formed by Ebbins and Lawford. The company’s records were given to Milt by Peter when the company was dissolved, and they were held hidden in stor-

age for over four decades. Records related to John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign reveal how for the first time in history, a candidate utilized Hollywood’s influence on the American public to win a presidential election. A sequence of files include correspondence, notes and other items documenting how Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford spearheaded the planning of President Kennedy’s Inaugural Gala. On May 29, 1962, President Kennedy was fêted at Madison Square Garden for his 45th birthday party. Among other items from that event, this collection includes Peter Lawford’s own original speech introducing the habitually tardy Marilyn Monroe. Milton Ebbins was backstage helping her get dressed, and in footage from that evening he can be seen running offstage after pushing Marilyn onstage as she went out to sing her sultry version of “Happy Birthday.” In addition to the items related to President Kennedy,

Disney, Hanna-Barbera, The Beatles, And Charlie Br own To Star In 1,400+ Lot Heritage Auctions’ Animation Sale ence millions of kids across a 50-year career. This humble Kiko the Kangaroo story opened the door for the man that would bring the world Yogi Bear, Top Cat, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Superfriends, Grape Ape, and hundreds more cartoon characters. Another key component of the Nov. 20 auction is a grouping of more than 50 never-before-seen pieces of rare production artwork from the momentous 1968 animated Beatles film “Yellow Submarine.” The chief lot of the grouping is a superb and very rare color model cel featuring all four of The Beatles in the full 1960s psychedelic glory of their animated avatars’ “everyday outfits” as worn in the film. It is estimated at $12,000+. There is no arguing that Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” is the most influential comic strip in history, or that Charlie Brown’s impact on cartoons was any less spectacular. In that vein, the auction presents what can only be viewed as the birth of that TV juggernaut with the offering of a superb range of material from the Peanuts Gang’s first animated appearances in the 19591962 “Ford Falcon” ad campaign, with a sequence production cel set-up featuring Charlie Brown and Schroeder being a prime example from the period. The cel is expected to bring $5,000+. More key modern lots include a 1966 “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” key master set-up cel, from the Chuck Jones Archives, estimated at $10,000+, featuring a classic moment from the beloved cartoon with the Grinch looking down at poor Max the dog over the lip of his sled, and a very early and rare 1987 Simpsons/Tracy Ullman Show key master set

Further highlights include a Cinderella key master set-up with Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the Stepsisters (Walt Disney, 1950), and a 1937 Snow White and All Seven Dwarfs production cel (Walt Disney, 1937). Rare Disney treasures, including a 1940 Walt Disney Pinocchio handpainted key master production cel and background featuring Geppetto, Pinocchio, and Figaro, and a 1959 masterpiece Sleeping Beauty Pan Production background attributed to legendary animator Eyvind Earle, as well as the first cartoon drawn for a studio by animation legend Joe Barbera, are the anchors in Heritage Auctions’ upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 20, Animation Art Signature Auction. The items could all bring more than $25,000 apiece. “We knew that we had to followup our $2-plus million inaugural auction in February with something spectacular,” said Jim Lentz, Director of Animation Art at Heritage. “I’m confident we have. This auction features something from every corner of animation, from Disney to Bugs Bunny to The Beatles, Peanuts, Windsor McKay, Hanna-Barbera and well beyond, spanning every era in animation history.” The 1940 Pinocchio, Geppetto, and Figaro handpainted key master set-up cel is one of a small group of surviving three-character production cells from the landmark Disney cartoon, with this set-up being among the finest Heritage catalogers have seen, while the epic, museum-quality Eyvind Earle Sleeping Beauty background is a breathtaking example of the master’s finest work. The majority of every background in the film was hand-painted by Earle himself, many of which took 10 days to complete. Joe Barbera’s first cartoon drawn for a studio in 1935 for Terry Toons, at 43 pages long, represents the first cartoon script written by the legend and the beginning of a career that would influ-

New-York Historical Society To Host Free Lecture, “Trompe l’oeil And Modernity,” On Thursday, Dec. 5 On Thursday, Dec. 5, the New-York Historical Society in New York City will welcome Dr. Judith Barter, who will deliver the 2013 C. Richard Hilker lecture, “Trompe l’oeil and Modernity,” on the relationship between trompe l’oeil and modernism in America at the close of the 19th century. Despite a surge of popularity during the 1870s, trompe l’oeil, an illusionistic style of painting, was continually dismissed as an artistic technique appropriate only for trickery, deception, or humor. Dr. Barter’s lecture will present trompe l’oeil as a style of painting that contained modern narratives reflecting a new consumer culture, standardization and professionalism, memory and reality, and the very nature of

painting itself. Dr. Barter contends that set against the background of department stores, photography, and optics, trompe l’oeil works by Harnett, Peto, Haberle, and Cope actually redefined the meaning of contemporary painting and consequently foreshadowed issues of 20thcentury American art. Dr. Judith Barter is the Field-McCormick chair and curator of American art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the author of numerous books and exhibitions. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Call 212-873-3400, ext. 359, or email sansomrsvp @nyhistory.org to reserve seats. For additional information, visit www.nyhistory.org.

collecting field are tin windup musicians, popularized during the 1930s and 1940s by such toy manufacturers as Marx. Today’s challenge comes in finding a tin windup still in pristine condition, its inner mechanism in good working order, its painted exterior unmarred. The search may prove well worth it: a mint 1940s’ “Li’l Abner Dogpatch Band,” featuring characters from the Al Capp comic strip, can fetch up to $800. Live music is endlessly exciting, simply because it is live. The basic elements can be identical - the same printed score, the same instrumentation, the same players and conductor - but actual interpretation will vary, even if only in the smallest of ways, from performance to performance.

Exquisitely rendered ceramic “Grasshopper Quartet;” tallest figure 6 1/2 inches high, $100$125/set.

Music is always evolving, improvising to meet the demands of the moment. That change of tune applies as well to all those musician figurines. Character themes fall in and out of favor, their sales appeal subject to the vagaries of public interest. Swing band figurines of the 1930s yield to the big bands of the 1940s. Jazz bands of the 1950s eventually wend their musical way to the rock bands of the present. One day, Shriner-hatted musical monkeys are in vogue; the next, an ensemble of guitarplaying “California Raisins” takes center stage. Each variation, however, captures a specific moment in time ... a merry melody to cherish.
