The Fullers Of Willow Brook Farms Collected Fine Antiques And Art Briggs Auction is pleased to feature the C. Thomas and Alexandra Huston Fuller estate collection of Willow Brook Farms, Catasauqua, Pa., at their Fine Estate Auction on Friday, Nov. 22, beginning at 3 p.m. The collection will feature an excellent assortment of antique furnishings, fine art and sculpture, Asian decorative arts, carpets, silver, fine jewelry, and more from their Catasauqua country estate. The Fuller family was very generous and well thought of in the Catasaqua community (a suburb of Allentown in Lehigh County). Willow Brook Farms came into being when Col. James W. Fuller had the vision to assemble a number of farms in the region, eventually ending up with close to 1,800 acres. One

of his dreams at the time was to have some of the finest horses in the country, so he purchased the largest Percheron horse in the world from Belgium. However, the real history of Willow Brook, the breadth and depth of its breeding program, and the introduction of the western riding style known as reining is owed to his son, Charlton Thomas Fuller. As a child, C. Thomas Fuller grew up doing chores on horseback. After graduating from Washington & Lee University and serving in World War II, Fuller returned to Willow Brook with his wife, Alexandra, and their three children. In the early 1950s, the couple’s oldest daughter began developing a fondness for horses, which is what Tom Fuller ultimately credits with bringing horses back to Willow Brook. Thomas Fuller was a founding member of the National Reining Horse Association and was instrumental in the creation of the Eastern Pennsylvania Reining Horse Association. The Fuller family hosted reining events for over 20 years at Willow Brook Farms. Both Fuller and his American Quarter Horse legend, Joe Cody, were inducted into the National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. The Fuller family also owned two other facilities, the Thoroughbred farm, called Winterwood in Unionville, Pa., and Louisiana Stud in Lafayette, La. All three of their properties produced horses of national prominence, several in the AQHA and NRHA Hall of Fame, and an Eclipse Award Winner - a prestigious award in the field of thoroughbreds. The Fullers’ passion for horses influenced the furnishing of their country house, which was decorated with various equestrian themed art and antiques. Highlights of this estate collection will include numerous pieces of fine art and sculpture in a wide array of artists, genres, and styles, including an oil-on-canvas equestrian landscape by James Walsham Baldock (British, 1822-98), depicting a huntsman mounted on a grey horse and holding a bay horse, with a hunt in the background (est. $8,000-$9,000). Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Four Books Every Collector Should Read At Least Once, Preferably Twice
I am often asked what books I recommend to beginning and novice collectors to become more savvy collectors. I used to answer with books written on the subject of economics and finance due to the amount of mass speculation that occurs within the greater antiques and collectibles trade. Recognizing that most beginning collectors don’t have an interest to read about economics or finance, I’ve readjusted my approach. Luckily, there are some great books written on the topics of the antiques and collectibles trade that mirror as excellent business lessons as well. These are the books that I recommend not only to novice collectors, but also to intermediate and experienced collectors who could benefit from some of the lessons contained

bring serious money on the collectibles marketplace. This books explores the origins of baseball cards and how billion dollar companies helped create a collecting juggernaut. The speculative bubble for sports cards that occurred in the late 1980s to early 1990s is also looked at en masse in this book. The book takes an unbiased focus and looks at the market for these collectibles over the years, who profited from them, and who lost big in one of the most popular collecting markets of the 20th century. 2. “The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: The Amazing Story of How America Lost Its Mind Over a Plush Toy and the Eccentric Genius Behind It” by Zac Bissonnette. Quite possibly one of the best books ever written on the topic of speculative bubbles in the greater antiques and collectibles trade. This book takes an inside look at the Beanie Baby bubble and paints the perfect picture of nostalgia for anyone who was alive during this frenzy. The book goes into detail as to what caused the price of children’s stuffed toys to increase in value exponentially on the secondary market only to come crashing down just a few years later. Experienced collectors who bought into the hype are featured, as well as experienced collectors who recognized the bubble and steered clear of it. This is one book that belongs

perspective, the book does a phenomenal job at taking readers through a journey unlike any other. This is a book that I own multiple copies of and re-read at least once every year or so. Best of all, this book can be had for less than $20. Regular readers of this column will keenly note that most of these books (with the exception of “Killer Stuff and Tons of Money”) center around the topic of speculation or collectibles that are susceptible to mass speculation in the trade. I do not deny this. The one thing I always tell all collectors regardless of age
and experience is to simply understand that in most cases a lot of the auction records being made in the higher end collectibles trade will pass. No asset and commodity can ever go up in price indefinitely, and if you understand that simple concept I guarantee that you will be a better collector and investor. on any collector’s bookshelf as a simple reminder that the price of no asset or commodity can rise indefinitely. 1. “Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems in Flea-Market America” by Maureen Stanton. This is quite possibly the greatest book ever written on the subject of the antiques and collectibles trade. I have commented about this book in past articles and have recommended it to acquaintances, collectors, friends, investors, and even speculators. Surprisingly, the book was written by an outsider to the greater trade and takes an inside look at the antiques market by the author’s use of her friend, a mid-tier antiques dealer who goes by an alias in the book to protect his identity. The real genius behind this book is the use of that alias because readers get a factual and unbiased account about the antiques and collectibles marketplace as a whole. There are even several chapters devoted to the collectibles trade in which popular and well-known comic book and vintage toy dealers are interviewed. The only negative aspect of the book is that it was written around the 2008/2009 financial crisis, of which the antiques and collectibles market was greatly affected. As a result, the gloom and doom commentary contained within the book is enough to sour even the most passionate collector on the trade, but if you can put that in

in these books. Listed below are the four books every collector should read, in my humble opinion. 4. “Comic Wars” by Dan Raviv. Believe it or not, there was a time when Marvel Comics was not owned by Disney and was on the brink of bankruptcy. How it got to this point is the subject of this book, which centers around how several Wall Street billionaires manipulated Main Street to get them to believe that the limited-edition holofoil comic books companies like Marvel were producing would be worth even more money in the future. What came next was a story about greed, economics, high finance, and mass speculation that almost took out one of the most popular creators of comic characters the world has ever known. The book is a must-read not only for comic book collectors, but also collectors of mass-produced collectibles and pop culturebased artifacts. “Comic Wars” is one of the many books on this list that delves into the topic of speculation and how companies manipulate the collectibles marketplace to ensure mass profits. 3. “Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession” by Dave Jamieson. Ever wonder how a popular staple of our childhood became a worthy collectible? Even today, graded vintage sports cards can

He also curated the exhibition “Nefertari: Light of Egypt,” which opened in 1994 in Rome, then traveled to Venice and Turin. The current exhibition, “Queen Nefertari: Eternal Egypt,” is drawn from the world-renowned Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy, which holds some 40,000 objects from all periods of Egyptian history. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is in Kansas City, Mo. To learn more, visit www.nelson-atkins.org.

20th-century abstraction, Manet was a revolutionary in his own time and a legend thereafter. Beyond his pivotal role in art history as the creator of iconic masterworks, Manet’s vision has come to define how we understand modern urban life and Paris, the so-called “capital of the 19th-century. The works in the exhibition encapsulate three “views of the artist’s life and work. Finally, “The Ragpicker (1867–71, possibly reworked 1876-77) demonstrates Manet’s innovative combination of references to contemporary visual culture and Old Master painting. “Manet: Three Paintings From the Norton Simon Museum is the seventh in a series of acclaimed reciprocal

Two large-size gold nuggets mined in Alaska during the days of the Gold Rush, one a 38.39-ounce nugget, the other 33.83 ounces, sold for a combined $172,725 at an auction held from Oct. 4 to 7 by Holabird Western Americana Collections, online and in its Reno, Nev., gallery. The gold nuggets were the top lots in a four-day Americana auction bursting with more than 3,100 lots in a wide array of collecting categories, petroliana, aviation, World War II, railroadiana, Native Americana, stock certificates, mining, minerals, coins and gold. A special section was devoted to dealers, with great bargains lotted specifically with re-sellers in mind. “We called this our fall season second chance auction, because for anyone who missed any of our great 2019 sales, this was their second chance to fill the holes in their collections,” said Fred Holabird of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “Bidders absolutely heeded the call, as we had solid participation live in the gallery and especially online. Overall it was a fantastic sale.” The 38.39-ounce gold nugget was mined at Ganes Creek, Alaska, about 150 miles east-southeast from Unalakleet, on the Norton Sound, which is 150 miles southeast of Nome. Ganes Creek is known for its large nuggets and there are several “Pay” nugget finding operations still there today. The

How Much Is An Illegible Autograph Worth?
the marketplace can kill demand for specific legitimate autographs. Personally, I agree with
the letter to the editor writer. If you can’t read it, it’s not worth nearly as much as a legible autograph. And I will never pay for such an autograph. But that’s just my opinion. What do you think? What’s it worth? Recently, I purchased a grouping of mostly illegible autographs of
professional boxers from the 1980s. My client’s husband had collected these from boxing matches he attended in Atlantic City casinos. Most were low-level boxing card chumps who never made it very far and who are remembered by no one today. Value is basically zero because no one wants them. There was a “Jersey Joe Walcott” autograph, signed well after his fighting days were over, signed on a blank partial piece of paper, actually worth perhaps $50-$100 if I could find anyone still interested in professional boxing today (can we say UFC?). And is anyone the least bit interested in “Jersey Joe Walcott” today? Maybe I’ll try eBay and see what happens. Artists are notorious for creating a beautiful artwork and then signing it with an unreadable and illegible signature. Although frustrating to me as an appraiser, the value of the artwork is far more important than just the artist’s signature, which is secondary. However, a recent letter to the-editor in a sports magazine caught my attention. The writer was complaining that all too many sports stars were charging a fee for signing autographs that were completely illegible. In the old days, when Babe Ruth signed an autograph, you knew it was Babe Ruth’s. The writer further complained that a famous player recently charged for an autograph that was so illegible that you couldn’t tell whether it was in English or Japanese. Of course, it’s not just sports stars. The same holds true for authors, celebrities, politicians, movie stars, musicians, historical figures or anyone else famous whose autographs command value. If you can’t read it, if it must be interpreted in order to sell it, should it still command a premium price? Should it have any value at all? And how about those famous person signatures that were actually signed by the boss’s secretary, assistant, staff, or signature-writing machine? How can you be certain the autograph is authentic, and does it also have value? What determines the value of autographs? Generally, it is things like the following: • Who signed it? How much in demand is that person’s signature today? • What was signed? A historically important document? A standard press photo? Or a napkin at a restaurant? • How was it signed? Is it pen, pencil, Sharpie, or magic marker? Pencil is usually the least desirable. • When was it signed? At the individual’s career peak or long after retirement when they were no longer important or relevant. • How well-remembered is that person today? Athletes who never made it, TV stars on long-forgotten series, or low-middle level politicians? These may never have much collectible value. • Condition? This will be extremely important. • Is the autograph legible? This is also extremely important, at least to me. • Can the autograph be guaranteed with a 100percent certainty? Again, this is clearly important. • How many are available? Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs was a great ball player who signed an autograph for nearly anyone who asked. Because he was such a
nice guy, his autographs command far less than others who signed fewer autographs, because he signed so many. • How many fakes are out there? An excessive number of fakes within

Potters On The Merrimac: A Century Of New England Ceramics Whether it has been a major pottery exhibit at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in Columbia or at the Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster, Pa., I have noticed throughout the country the passion that collectors and historians have for their local utilitarian pottery production from the 18th and 19th century. This excitement is even found at the smallest of museums. However, for the past decade or so, I have visualized an exhibit demonstrating the rich history of pottery production for where I live, about 35 miles north of Boston in Newburyport, Mass. The idea behind this display is a first for the area, a selection of pottery like none other previously exhibited. The exhibit would feature everything from local Colonial production right up through the art pottery manufactured in the early 20th century. In the fall of 2018, I decided it was now or never, and I contacted the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport to gauge their interest in such an exhibit. I thought the museum would be a perfect spot, being located downtown and along the picturesque Merrimack River. The museum’s curator, Kevin McDonald, was receptive to the idea. For the last ten months, I have worked with McDonald and the assistant director of

the museum, Sean Palmatier, bringing the vision to reality. The end result, being an exhibit like no other that I have seen in Essex County, Mass., featuring many of the best and most important objects ever created in the Newburyport area. The History of Pottery Production in the Newburyport, Mass., Area Settled in 1635, the city of Newburyport was originally part of the Newberry Plantation (now Newbury), which was inhabited by English colonists from Wiltshire, England, in the northeastern part of coastal Massachusetts. Waterways were certainly a major draw for these early settlers, with the area being surrounded by the Merrimack River and the Parker River. The port city quickly became prosperous as a popular fishing and trading center, and it turned to agricultural needs. With this success came a growth in population, and hundreds of first period and Georgian style homes were built in the area. A demand quickly grew for artisans, laborers, imported goods and household utilitarian wares. In a matter of time, Newburyport was formed in 1764, when the General Court of Massachusetts passed an act for erecting part of the town of Newbury into a new town by the name of Newburyport. One of Essex County’s earliest pottery businesses was a company owned by Joseph Bayley (1701-61) who

Bayley and his wife left Rowley in 1735, when they were removed from the church, and relocated with their four children to Newbury (Newburyport). Joseph continued to produce red earthenware in Newbury until the early 1760s, when his son, Daniel (1729-92), became owner of the business. By 1763, Daniel had relocated to High Street next to St. Paul’s Church in Newbury, which became Newburyport the following year, and this is where he built his pottery business. The Bayley Pottery eventually turned into a family enterprise and also employed potters who were not immediate relatives, such as John Thomas (1754-1843) in the 1770s and 1780s, a native of Gloucester, Mass., who went on to establish the industry in North Yarmouth (known as Yarmouth after 1849), Maine, about 1791.
The wares made at the Bayley Pottery were not only intended for the local marketplace. Based on archaeology, pottery was distributed throughout New England, with examples found in Salem, Massachusetts, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Historic Westbrook, Maine, possibly Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, as well as the site of Colonial trading posts in Veazie, Maine and Saint John, New Brunswick. Archaeological evidence recovered by Massachusetts author Lura Woodside Watkins (1897-1982) at the site of the pottery was published in 1950 in “Early New England Potters and Their Wares.” A Route 1 underpass was constructed through the Bayley site in 1934, revealing an excellent collection of artifacts now owned by the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit catalog, “Potters on the Merrimac: A Century of New England Ceramics,” is available in the Custom House Maritime Museum’s bookstore in Newburyport, Mass., as well as Amazon.com.
The evidence shows an emphasis devoted to the production of slipware, a style of decoration applied with liquid kaolin clay. The known forms decorated in slip include chamber pots, plates, pans and porringers, while other styles combine various forms of bowls, jugs, mugs and flowerpots. The glazes range from dark colors like black and brown to more colorful glazes such as green. Nevertheless, the landscape of the New England pottery industry changed drastically with the American Revolution. The industry in This is kiln furniture recovered at the Charlestown, Mass., had been site of the Phineas Chase Pottery in a centralized production cenMerrimacport, Mass. ter in New England in the 17th
century through 1775, but this industry was leveled at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, during the siege of Boston in the early stages of the American Revolution. As a result, some of the Charlestown potters relocated, such as Benjamin Bodge (1747-1822), who moved in about 1775 to Merrimacport (then South Amesbury), Mass., a small village located along the Merrimack River just upriver from Amesbury and Newburyport. Bodge married Susanna Pecker in Haverhill on Sept. 27, 1770, but the extent of his pottery production in the area is unknown today. Continued on page 15

Susanna’s brother, William Pecker (1758-1820), also born in Haverhill and an Essex County trained potter, is found in Merrimacport in 1784. It seems that Pecker remained employed with his brother-inlaw until the early 1790s, when he established his own pottery. Bodge’s role might have also changed, and he may have now helped Pecker with his business. The Pecker Pottery is largely known today for the lead glazed red earthenware that was produced during the circa 1791-1820 period. Known forms include jugs, pitchers, pots, bowls, flasks, pans, chamber pots, porringers and flowerpots. There is also some speculation that Pecker or Bodge possibly produced some slipware, but that has not been proven in archaeology. Pecker was also a stoneware potter. In fact, it was not identified in publication until the 2004 issue of “Ceramics in America” that there are known pieces of marked Pecker stoneware in existence. Archaeologist John Kille wrote that article based on a two-gallon handled crock marked “Wm Pecker” found at a Kentucky flea market. The crock was decorated on one side with a stamped bird perched on a branch and the other with a stamped flower. Since that article was published, somewhere around one to two dozen pieces of Pecker stoneware have been identified, some of which had been previously attributed to other locations. It has also been discovered that Pecker applied a fish stamp, as well as cobalt used for an aesthetic blue decoration. Pecker died a tragic death in 1820, when his kiln collapsed, falling on top of him. The tradition of pottery production in Merrimacport was then carried on for another 60 to 70 years under the direction of Pecker’s nephew, James Chase (1778-1849), and followed by his son, Phineas Chase (1820-1911). Some of their production looks very much like that made at the Pecker Pottery. The story of the Bodge, Pecker and Chase potteries ended in the 1890s, when Phineas ceased production altogether in his 70s. His obituary reading in 1911, “Mr. Chase was a man of sterling honesty and marked integrity and had the respect and confidence of the community.” But with the end of pottery production in Merrimacport came another business in Newburyport; Thomas Nickerson, an English trained potter, established the Merrimac Ceramic Company in Newburyport in 1897. Nickerson’s products in the first four years were sometimes marked with a paper label, “Merrimac Ceramic
