Top-Notch Automobilia And Petroliana Draw Big Turnout Of Motivated Buyers At Morphy’s More Than 400 Of The 747 Cataloged Lots Graded Condition 9 Or Better The serious players in automobilia and petroliana collecting canceled any existing plans once the word got out that a spectacular private collection would be headlining Morphy’s Oct. 8 auction. “It was one of the biggest gallery turnouts for a gas and oil sale that we’ve had for years,” stated Morphy’s Automobilia and Petroliana division head John Mihovetz. “The attraction was the collection of more than 400 lots that were in 9 or 9-plus condition. There was a lot of buzz about the auction beforehand, and we sensed that bidding would be strong.” Several new records were set during the 747-lot sale, which grossed over $2.1 million. All prices quoted here include a 20 percent buyer’s premium, per Morphy’s pre-stated terms. Collectors tipped their hats to the envy-stirring porcelain gas sign that led prices realized at $66,000, a new auction record for a sign of its particular type. Publicizing Red Hat Royal 400 Gasoline, the richly colorful 48-inch-diameter sign had been held in the same private collection for more than 25 years and was “one of the better examples ever to be publicly sold,” according to Mihovetz. Also widely regarded as one of the most sought-after advertising items in the gas and oil hobby, a porcelain sign touting Houston Gasoline bore the striking image of Texas patriot Sam Houston on horseback. It drew 18 bids and swept past its $25,000 high estimate to settle at a record $33,600. Its next destination? “It’s headed for the Lone Star State,” said Mihovetz. The $21,600 price achieved by a

By Karl Pass It has been five years since the Antique Dealers Association of Berks County (ADABC) moved its annual show from Leesport to Kempton, Pa. Change can be healthy, and in a marketplace with plenty of challenges, sometimes necessary. The move was a positive one, and this little regional show is the real deal—a relevent show with the gate and sales to prove it. Mark your calendars for the third Continued on page 2

In the beginning, some (questioned) who would ever find it (the show) out in the country, but I think it is working out.” The ADABC works hard on this show. Kempton is a very rural village in Albany Township, northern Berks County, close to the Lehigh County border. The township is active in land conservation and historic preservation efforts and takes the rural nature of the region seriously. Parts of the isolated landscape are picturesque, and that is how its local officials and residents strive to maintain it. The community recreation center, where the show is held, is in a park-like setting. The town is not new territory for holding an antiques show. Collector Anecdotes And Antics Nostalgia Dies Again: The Sad Demise Of Another Retail Juggernaut

By Shawn Surmick The 1988 Sears Wish Book is quite possibly one of the most important pieces of tangible nostalgia from my childhood. Having just gotten my Nintendo Entertainment System a few months before the Wish Book’s release, I will never forget the fascination and joy I felt as I turned to the video game section and saw all the latest new releases that would be available by Christmas. There was no internet, no social media, and no digital magazines to keep me up to date on all the latest releases at the time. If you wanted to know the world of video games in 1988, you were stuck waiting for your latest issue of Nintendo Power in the mail or the yearly Christmas catalog from Sears. Back then, Sears had a lock on the holiday shopping season. And while competition among big box retailers was fierce even back then, there was something magical about being a kid and paging through the full-color Sears Wish Book full of all the latest toys, action figures, and video games. It’s a feeling I will never forget and a feeling I never get while meddling through Amazon or eBay. Make no mistake, Sears was the Amazon of their day. The company transformed shopping into an adventure. Their stores were always decked out in all the latest gadgets, and Sears was usually the premier shopping destination for anyone visiting any of the malls that were lucky enough to have a Sears store

attached. Without Sears, my childhood would be drastically different. Sears will always have a significant footnote in the retail industry in the United States. The company was started in 1886 as the R.W. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis, Mn., by Richard Warren Sears. After partnering with Alvah C. Roebuck the company was relocated to Chicago, Ill., and published its very first mail order catalog in 1887 that featured watches and jewelry. By 1889, the company was sold, and Richard Warren Sears relocated to Iowa to become a banker. Fate would intervene, and by 1892 he would return to Chicago and partner with Roebuck once again. By 1893, the company began offering a deluge of products outside of watches and jewelry. Sewing machines, bicycles, automobiles, and eventually even mass-produced homes were added to its yearly mail-order catalogs. By 1906, the company would make history by being the first retailer to ever offer an initial public offering in American financial history. Due to the deluge of products the company offered, they survived the Great Depression. In 1933, they launched what would be known as the very first Wish Book. The Wish Book was a popular catalog that was released every year before Christmas and featured all the latest toys and games. Upon release, it became extremely popular among children. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Sears expanded its dominance into retail locations across the United States. By the 1970s, Sears would become one of the most powerful retailers in the United States. Their success would be well-known by 1974 when Sears completed the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago and continued their expansion into the retail industry with an iron fist. In the 1970s and ’80s,

when shopping malls started to become the quintessential weekend retreat of the middle class, Sears benefited by becoming one of the most popular anchor stores for some of the most successful malls in the country. One of the fondest memories of my youth was visiting the King of Prussia mall with my parents on an almost bimonthly basis. My parents would always park at the second story entrance to Sears before the Sears store left the King of Prussia Plaza Mall many years ago. A lot of collectors also have a special connection to Sears. Anyone who has collected the original vintage “Star Wars” action figure line from Kenner Toys knows that Sears stores had access to exclusive products and action figures that now command a tidy sum on the secondary market. Two of today’s most popular vintage “Star Wars” collectibles are the Cloud City Play Set and the infamous Blue Snaggletooth action figure that came packaged in Sears’s exclusive Cantina Adventure Set. Since the Cloud City Play Set, which was just a piece of colored cardboard that served as a backdrop to the toys, was only available at Sears, factory-sealed, near-mint examples sell for thousands of dollars today. An AFA-graded example in near mint or better condition just for the Blue Snaggletooth figure alone can easily fetch $700 or more. Sadly, it was announced on Oct. 15, 2018, that Sears had filed for bankruptcy. Given the recent closure of Toys R Us, this sent shockwaves through the retail industry. Collectors and enthusiasts who grew up remembering the Sears Wish Book yearly catalog and its effects on their youth were not immune from feeling some sort of loss or sadness upon hearing the news.

Unfortunately, Sears’s bankruptcy filing should come as no surprise to those who followed the financial releases from the struggling retailer, as they have been in serious trouble for several years now. In 2004, the company made the disastrous decision to merge with K-Mart stores. Many analysts believe that this decision contributed to the company’s economic woes and solidified their fate. This all begs the question as to whether traditional retail stores cannot “just” survive, but also prosper in a post-digital online world. First it was Toys R Us, now it is Sears. Tomorrow is not guaranteed for any traditional retailer. In an upcoming article I will attempt to answer the question as to how traditional retailers can survive and flourish in a world were online stores are cheaper and more efficient than traditional retailers, but I offer one hint. I have yet to feel nostalgia from ordering anything online. And that, my fellow collectors, says a lot about what today’s kids who are tomorrow’s collectors are feeling as well. Now please log off the internet and go shopping. Until next time.

An unusual addition to the auction was a 24-piece bow and violin collection, curated by a private collector from Erie, Pa. The collection included many pieces previously owned by notable musicians. It was highlighted by a Francescus Geissnhof violin ($2,100) previously played by Sam Shaffron of the Dallas Symphony and a violin signed by Lee Nigh ($1,300), a modern craftsman based in Missouri. In furniture, the top lot was an elaborately carved Tiffany & Co. tall-case clock, which sold to a floor bidder for $9,500. Certain types of Mid-Century Modern furniture have been growing in popularity, particularly those pieces with designer attribution. Cordier’s quarterly Fine and Decorative Arts Auctions can be a reliable indicator of trends in the market, and the Harrisburg, Pa., auction house’s Aug. 11 and 12 sale was as example. Folk art continues to be a hot collecting field, showcased in Cordier’s sale by a decorated Pennsylvania German blanket chest made for Johannes Blecher (17801859). Blecher is buried in Witmer Cemetery in Lancaster County, Pa. The chest was decorated with three oval floral and urn motifs and hammered down for $3,500 to a bidder on the sales floor. All prices are hammer prices and do not include a buyer’s premium. Jewelry, offered on the

first day of the sale, holds a strong secondary market for auction sellers. Buyers are investing in both antique and modern pieces, and some of the items sold were close to retail. A 14-carat Victorian brooch with an oval carved moonstone surrounded by 42 diamonds saw spirited bidding before selling to a bidder on the phone for $3,100. A Rolex Perpetual wristwatch realized $2,900; an emeraldand-diamond Renaissancestyle necklace, $2,300; and a pair of 18-carat rose-cut diamond earrings, $2,700. Although the market for porcelain and glassware has softened noticably in the last 20 years, especially since 2008/09, a fine collection of porcelain collectibles found heavy interest throughout the second day of the sale. Flying even higher, a fantastic Gregory Independent Oil globe lens for Aerio Gas was a bidder favorite with its appealing image of a primitive airplane against a bank of towering blue clouds. On a mint-green ripple body and graded a firm 9.0, it was an example that would be “very hard to improve on,” said Mihovetz. It surpassed its $15,000-$20,000 estimate to land at $28,800. Vintage gas pumps are highly prized by petroliana enthusiasts, and whenever an example as rare and beautiful as the Wayne “Roman Column” 10-gallon visible pump auctioned by Morphy’s becomes available, collectors put the

Superbly restored in Sinclair Gasoline’s distinctive green and white motif, and in all-original condition with no reproduction parts, it hit the midpoint of its estimate at $30,750. Useful accessories that once adorned the walls of America’s “filling stations,” pictorial advertising thermometers were snapped up at prices as high as $5,227.50. That was what one bidder paid for a Red Crown Gasoline & Motor Oil thermometer that promised “Power Mileage.” “It was such a privilege to present this collection to the public,” said Mihovetz, who was personally involved throughout the auction process, from brokering the This Red Hat Approved Motor Oil consignment deal to cataporcelain glass-face thermometer sold loging and working with for $14,400.

Bidders also clamored for a Sunoco Motor Oil die-cut porcelain flange sign that rose to $11,400 against a $4,000-$6,000 estimate. “There were multiple veteran collectors after that piece because it’s the finest known example ever to be offered publicly. The new owner will never need an upgrade,” said Mihovetz. Graphics, condition and rarity were also on the minds of gas globe buyers. “Some gas globes are seen as works of art, and this sale produced some of the rarest globes in the best possible condition, like the one for Husky Gasoline,” said Mihovetz. All original on an orange ripple body, with a stunning image of a husky dog against a backdrop of the Arctic Northern Lights, the globe was a visual knockout. With pre-sale

The decorated cased satin glass miniature lamp brought $5,377. estimate to settle at $5,850. “This sale generated robust interest across the board, from bidders near and far. Levels of online participation continue to increase dramatically for us, an indication that there is increased market demand for a diverse range of art and antiques. The overall excitement and strong sales results reflect the freshness and high quality of the merchandise

offered. In addition, the auction was 99.9 percent unreserved, so the results are a true and honest gauge of the current market, said company president Jeffrey S. Evans. “We already have several strong items in house for the next Fine and Decorative Arts Auction, including a selection of estate jewelry and an outstanding collection of rare Buffalo Pottery, so the spring 2019 sale should be another great event, continued Evans. American Antique Auctions

Clarke E. Hess By Cory Van Brookhoven A friend and expert of Lancaster County history, preservation, and architecture is gone. Clarke E. Hess, 64, passed away Nov. 7 at his historic home in Lititz, Pa. Throughout most of his life, Hess was a historian of local Mennonite and Pennsylvania German culture. One of Clarke’s many loves was the study of Mennonite genealogy and his Hess family roots. He authored several books, including “The Mennonite Arts” in 2001 and “Lancaster County Privy Bags” in 2010. Many of the items pictured in his books came from his own collection. In 1966, at the mere age of 12, he would purchase his very first antique. Born in Lebanon County, Hess had called Lancaster County home since the age of 16. In 2015, Hess would cocurate a “Historic Arts and Artifacts” exhibit for the Manheim Township Historical Society which was displayed at the Stoner House in Lancaster County. Throughout his life, Hess served on several committees including at The Lancaster Quilt Museum, The Hans Herr House, and the Heritage Center Museum. Clarke was an active member of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where he joined the board of directors in 1981. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and Landis Valley Farm Museum. Additionally, he would be recognized as a Fellow of LancasterHistory.org and was also a member of the American Folk Art Society and the Vernacular Architecture Forum. In 1985, Hess would purchase his ancestral family homestead in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, restoring the property with great care and striving for authenticity. The land was originally acquired from William Penn’s sons in 1735. The dwelling would go on to be featured in several media

outlets. In 1988, Clarke led an effort to transport and preserve a 1829 Lititz spring house, saving it from demolition. The structure was one of many that were relocated under his guidance, and it found a new home lovingly situated on the Hess homestead. Hess would also co-curate the 1991 exhibit “Changes in Latitude,” which was featured at the Schneider Haus Museum in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Throughout his life, Clarke would inspire countless historians, who, through his enthusiasm, also became passionate about family genealogy and local history. In 1992, Hess earned the Preservation Leadership Award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. Clarke would often open his home for special seasonal events and garden tours, as well as to historical groups. His chosen career was serving as vice president and as a principal owner of Hess Home Builders located in Neffsville. A celebration of Clarke’s life will be held Sunday, Nov. 18, at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St. in Lititz. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., with the service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to be sent to the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, PA 17602, or to The ALS Association Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 37002, Boone, Iowa 50037.

When Is An Appraisal Not An Appraisal?

EMBASSY AUCTIONS INTERNATIONAL 5336 MINE RD.,

“What’s It Worth” Antique Minute A “free appraisal” is a very common ploy used by some businesses to lure you into their establishment. “Free jewelry appraisals” and “free coin appraisals” are two common tactics. Unfortunately, all too often people confuse “offer to buy” with “appraisal.” A simple definition of an appraisal would be as follows: 1. An opinion of value put forth by a knowledgeable and experienced individual. 2. Put forth by someone who does not have a vested interest in buying or otherwise acquiring the item. 3. And usually involves paying some type of professional fee for the appraisal service rendered. An “offer to buy” is not an “appraisal.” Rather, it’s just that, an offer to buy, and usually for as little as possible. When you bring your item in for a “free appraisal,” you run the risk of receiving a low-ball offer, with a litany of what’s wrong with the item, while hearing nothing about what’s right with the item. I’m not suggesting that you should never sell to a dealer who’s buying for resale and looking to make a profit. I’m a dealer, and I buy all the time. And most dealers I know are fair and are simply trying to make a “fair profit” for their

financial investment, hard work, and risk. They’re entitled and deserving of that. What I am suggesting is that there can be a large difference between a “legitimate appraisal” and a “free appraisal/offer to buy.” And you need to understand that prior to going into a transaction. What’s it worth? A while back I sold a large quantity of one-ounce silver bars for a client. When I delivered her a check for $9,100, she stated that another dealer had “appraised” the same items, with an “offer to buy” in the amount of $1,500. Clearly that was not in the woman’s best interests.

Mike Ivankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert, and host of the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show that airs live on Friday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on WBCB 1490 AM in the greater Philadelphia area. It is available on the internet at www.WBCB1490.com. His show also airs in Denver, Co., on KEZW Cruisin 1430 AM on Saturdays from 3 to 4 p.m. MST and Sundays from 11 a.m. to noon MST and on the internet at www.Cruisin1430.com.
