Wadsworth Atheneum Focuses On Groundbreaking Art Collector, Financier J. Pierpont Morgan “Morgan: Mind Of The Collector” Will Run Until Dec. 31 The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will celebrate the unprecedented art-collecting career of financier J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in “Morgan: Mind of the Collector.” Morgan traveled the globe to collect more than 20,000 works of art in a 23-year period; his broad acquisitions included sculpture, manuscripts, rare books, prints and drawings, paintings, and decorative arts including silver, porcelain, glass, tapestries, enamels, ivories, and bronzes. “Morgan: Mind of the Collector” unites more than 100 of these rare objects to illuminate

Morgan’s pursuit of global culture, commemorating his collecting achievements and probing an exploration of his motivations, buying decisions, and impact on the evolution of art collecting and museums in America. The exhibition is on view until Dec. 31. The founder of a banking dynasty still in operation today, J. Pierpont Morgan was one of the Continued on page 2

LancasterHistory.org will present a historical performance that captures a moment in time, taking visitors back to the holiday of 1875 when James Buchanan’s niece, Harriet Lane Johnston, transformed the 15th president of the United States’ home, Wheatland, into a Christmas display of high Victorian style. As a girl, Harriet Lane Johnston spent her holidays at the very center of the fashion world, the Court of Queen Victoria. By 1874, she was decorating the home she had inherited from her uncle James Buchanan in high Victorian style as she welcomed friends and family from far and wide. This holiday season, be Harriet’s guest at Wheatland and join in the festivities. Visit rooms exquisitely decorated with flowers, ivy, wreaths and ribbon, as well as a towering Christmas Tree overflowing with ornaments. Experience the joyful sounds of Christmas music, amusing games, the scent of holly, and the warmth of the holiday season. Yuletide at Wheatland is an annual, holidaythemed, performance-based program at President James

Buchanan’s Wheatland, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, Pa. Each year there is a different theme, commonly centered around the history of Wheatland, its inhabitants, or the time period in which they lived. Visitors witness an hour-long performance and may be asked to participate during the performance through caroling or playing games. Yuletide at Wheatland ticket holders also receive admission to the museum exhibition galleries at LancasterHistory.org. Yuletide at Wheatland 2017 is supported, in part, by the Fulton Family Foundation. Yuletide at Wheatland Victorian Splendor will open Saturday, Nov. 25, and run through Saturday, Dec. 30. Visit www.lancasterhistory.org/ yuletide or call 717-392-4633 for performance dates, times, pricing, and tickets. Reservations are strongly recommended.

significant capital contributions are represented in the exhibition by a pair of wrought bronze and brass gates created by the pioneering Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, R.I., which once furnished the east entrance of the Morgan Memorial. Pierpont’s ultimate gift to the Wadsworth Atheneum came in 1917, when, in accordance with his father’s will, Jack Morgan dispersed more than 1,350 objects from Pierpont’s collection to the Wadsworth Atheneum “for the instruction and pleasure” of the public. The transformative gift formed the core of the museum’s European decorative arts collection; “Morgan: Mind of the Collector” corresponds with the centennial anniversary of that re-foundation. “Morgan: Mind of the Collector” tells the story of Morgan’s pursuits through more than 100 diverse objects, organized according to three of his collecting passions: antiquities, sacred relics, and objects with compelling historical ties. Morgan’s lifelong fascination with the ancient world, experienced through a biblical lens, led him to collect art and artifacts as he traveled to Rome, Jerusalem, and Egypt. A glass cameo cup on loan from The Corning Museum of Glass is known as “The Morgan Cup” (ca. 1-99 C.E.); Morgan acquired it in opposition to advisers who doubted its authenticity, and it proved to This Pilgrim flask, 16th century, Italian, be a rare object manufactured enameled glass, is courtesy of the in the ancient Roman Empire. In 1889 Pierpont and his father contributed a combined $150,000 to the museum, and following Junius’ death in 1890 Pierpont commissioned and funded the $1,400,000 Morgan Memorial in his father’s honor, more than doubling the museum’s size. cash) to hoard factory-sealed Lego sets. This is why sets released after 2014 are barely holding their value on the fickle secondary market. Almost everyone is now hoarding factory sealed Lego sets, with both licensed “Star Wars sets and exclusive high piece count sets leading the charge. It is no doubt that the secondary Lego market has dramatically changed since I first started writing about it several years ago. As a Lego collector and enthusiast who owns well over $20,000 worth of factory-sealed Lego sets, along with a vast collection of parts, prices, and minifigures, I always knew the market was in the midst of a massive speculative period. Contrary to what speculators and resellers think about Lego’s decision to

would be the next Ultimate Collector’s Series Millennium Falcon, and as a result, bought several units of each. It took Lego seven long years to retire that set, and within months a barely different re-released Lego “Death Star model graced store shelves at an increased price of $499.99, much to the dismay of disgruntled resellers. By September 2017, The Lego Group announced that profits had slipped by almost 5 percent from the previous year. As a result of this, the company is planning to cut 1,400 jobs and has promised to become a much leaner company. Fast forward to October 2017, and more bad news awaited Lego speculators and resellers. The company just announced plans to rerelease one of its most popular discontinued sets. The Lego “Taj Mahal was originally released in 2008 with a retail price of $299.99 and contained 5,922 pieces (set number 10189). Since being off the secondary market for many years, the set shot up in value to several thousand dollars and became hoarded by speculators and collectors alike. Lego announced plans to re-release the set at the end of the year with almost no modifications being made to the previous model. This means the new release will look and build almost exactly as the older, highly sought-after version.

Almost overnight panic struck owners of the original Lego “Taj Mahal. Now prices are in free fall across all popular secondary online sites like eBay, Amazon, Bricklink, and Craigslist. The announcement sent shockwaves through the Lego collecting community. If Lego can and will reproduce classic sets with a lot of secondary market value, what’s to say they won’t re-release every highly prized collectible set produced over the past few years? Since Lego investing wasn’t a popular buzzword back before 2012, few speculators had the foresight (and the

On an uneventful day back in July 2007, The Lego Group released one of its largest and most iconic sets ever produced. Based on the coveted “Star Wars franchise, retailing for $499.99 and containing 5,195 pieces, the Ultimate Collector’s Series Millennium Falcon (set number 10179) would appear on store shelves. It would disappear from those very same store shelves by the beginning of 2010 in typical Lego fashion. By the end of 2010, demand for the now discontinued set had increased significantly. By 2014, a factory sealed USC Millennium Falcon could net almost $3,000 on the secondary market. Today, mass speculation in the secondary Lego market is much riskier. Thanks in part to mass media attention being paid to the value of discontinued Lego sets, so-called Lego investing has been gaining large amounts of attention since 2012. Unfortunately, that is also the reason why Lego investing is no longer a guaranteed way to make easy money. Lego has always understood the value of their brand. After all, they produce a fairly expensive toy. And while the cost of an average action figure now retails for about $6, the average cost of the cheapest Lego set is roughly $13, with most modest sized sets selling for $30 or more. To attract and keep the interests of diehard enthusiasts, Lego limits the shelf life of each set it produces to only a few years in most cases, with some sets being discontinued after several months and others warming shelves for five years or more. Couple this marketing strategy with sets based on some of the hottest licensed properties like “Star Wars and “Harry Potter, and it is no secret why Lego became the darling of speculators and toy collectors everywhere.

Even Disney wasn’t immune from Lego fever. By 2014, Disney was a year away from releasing the most highly anticipated film of 2015. “Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Force Awakens would shatter box office records and encourage a new era of enthusiasts to collect all the latest toys and merchandise. Lego benefited highly thanks to its deal to continue producing sets based on the expanded universe of the “Star Wars galaxy, but even in 2015, not everything was on the up and up. Unfortunately, by early 2016 it was clear that way too many Lego sets were being produced. Big box retailers like Walmart and Target routinely started to place recently released sets on clearance after only a few months of release. Amazon used razor thin profit margins to move a lot of recently released Lego sets for almost 40 percent off. It was clear that the speculative bubble that developed around most Lego sets was starting to wane, with stories of irate and burned out speculators erupting on online collecting forums and on YouTube. By 2016, Lego caused an uproar when it decided to re-release its popular Lego “Star Wars Death Star set that was discontinued in 2015. The original set came out in 2008 and retailed for $399.99. Upon its release many speculators thought it

re-release older, discontinued sets, I firmly believe this is actually a very wise decision on the part of The Lego Group. Lego was never meant to be an exclusive collectible. It was meant to be an ongoing toy line that should be enjoyed by children of all ages, and even if I lose a large portion of the money I have invested in Lego sets as a result, so be it. I’m confident another speculative bubble will come along quite soon, one that the media can’t wait to report on.

set by Andy Warhol in 2013. Being sold are gifts to Jon from Jean-Michel, a pair of untitled, 9-inch-tall painted vases by Basquiat, signed “J.B.” under the base and each estimated at $40,000-$80,000, and a circa-1983 leather jacket with an image of Basquiat’s face inside a Jack of Hearts playing card on the back, signed “Rags” and believed to have been done by Michael J. Raglin, who was in the circle of Warhol (est. $10,000-$20,000). Also sold will be a Stelton Thermos, designed by Erik Magnussen and painted and decorated by Basquiat, inscribed “Jon” and signed “JB” (est. $5,000-$10,000), and a gelatin silver print of a black and white photo, titled “Jon Gould and Jean-Michel Basquiat,” unsigned (est. $500-$1,000). For those unable to attend the auction in person, internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Telephone and absentee bids will also be accepted. The Dec. 2 auction will be preceded by a live-only discovery sale of other items, removed from the estate, on Friday, Dec. 1. horses, Adirondack furniture, clothing and other items. Five lots in the auction are relating to Basquiat. Perhaps no other item in the sale expresses the complexity of Warhol and Gould’s relationship than the synthetic polymer on stretched canvas painting that Warhol intentionally fashioned, a painting/sculpture. Titled “Abstraction – A Gift to Jon Gould,” the 16-by-25-inch work is emotional and thought-provoking. To understand the reality of expression in Warhol’s work, the lot includes several copies of poems, previously unseen, that Gould penned to Warhol. Nothing could be more familiar to an artist such as Warhol as a stretched canvas. Warhol broke the stretchers, forming it into a shape, then painted it. It is the expected top lot of the sale, with an estimate of $500,000-$1 million, but not all the items are pricey. The copy of “Exposures” (Grossett & Dunlap, N.Y., 1979), for example, signed once on the dust jacket (“To John / Andy”) and once on the title page, rather cryptically (“To Jon, Without Love – Love, Andy Pandy”), carries a pre-sale estimate of $150-$300. The synthetic polymer and silkscreen ink on aluminum sheeting sculpture by Warhol, borrowing a front page from the New York Post and titled “Marine Death Toll Hits 172,” 24-by-20 inches, signed “Jon / Andy Warhol ’83,” should bring $40,000$60,000, while the charcoal on wove and colorcoated, stitched paper titled “Body Builder,” signed and inscribed “Jon 82” and originally meant as a triptych, measuring 16-by-23.5 inches, has an estimate A birthday card collage, with folded, cut and of $20,000-$30,000. arranged children’s birthday greeting cards, The photographic signed “Jon...love Andy Warhol,” in a plexiglas collage of nine uniquely frame, will be estimated at $5,000-$10,000. stitched gelatin silver

up virtually everything her son owned and shipped it back to Amesbury. The items have been stored there until now. “It’s a blessing in a way that Harriet Gould was, as Andy was, a collector, as anyone who enters her home would attest,” said Dan Meader, director at John McInnis Auctioneers who was assigned, after the family had worked for months, the task of going through every box and wrapped object in the home, one by one, and putting together the pieces to let the items tell the story of this unique relationship. “Jon and Andy’s relationship was a complex one. Here for the first time we see a bit of the other side of the relationship,” said Meader. “In Andy’s prior relationships, he did not shower them with gifts. He acted much differently with him and presented him with many personal expressions of objects and art.” Most of the first 130 objects in the more than 350lot auction are gifts from Warhol to Gould. These include artworks, books, photos, 15 or so Native American objects (baskets, beadwork and quillwork), several glass pieces (to include Lalique and Baccarat), a pair of carousel

prints, housed in a 38-by-31.5inch frame and with the lowest image embossed “Andy Warhol,” comes with a 1982 mint julep cup given to Jon and Andy by Gov. John Brown of Kentucky, along with two tickets to the Kentucky Derby, relating to the stitched photo. The piece has an estimate of $10,000-$20,000. Perhaps no other image is as closely linked with Warhol’s body of work as his iconic Marilyn portrait. In this sale, an invitation to the Factory Editions event, “Andy Warhol, A Print Retrospective, 196381,” which ran from Nov. 21 to Dec. 22, 1981, in New York, showing one image of “Marilyn, 1967” on the front and measuring 12-by-12 inches, signed “Jon / Andy,” is expected to sell for $5,000$10,000. A birthday card collage, with folded, cut and arranged children’s birthday greeting cards, signed “Jon….love Andy Warhol” and measuring 14-by11.25 inches in a plexiglas frame, should also command $5,000-$10,000. Other artists’ names in the auction, besides Warhol, will include photographer Christopher Makos, Roy Lichtenstein, Antonio Lopez, Marcel Duchamp, Peter H. Beard, James Mac, Oliver Sanchez, Salvador Dali and Thomas Mails, among others. While the Warhol items and the relationship between the artist and Jon Gould will dominate the auction, short shrift should not be given to the five lots pertaining to Jean-Michel Basquiat, who, like Gould, died young (at age 27, from a heroin overdose in 1988), especially since he holds the current record for an artwork by an American artist at auction, at $110.5 million. The untitled painting, from 1982, eclipsed the previous record of $104.5 million

Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos There’s nothing quite like the charm of an antique or vintage quilt. They underscore historic values in older homes, add a warm touch of the past to contemporary rooms, introduce movement and color to monochromatic spaces, and some even tell stories of people, places or events. Whether spread on a bed, framed on a wall or hanging over a quilt rack as a decorative touch, quilts always seem to create fascination or bring joy to those who gaze upon them. The history of quilts and quilting is far older than America itself, but we’ll just take a look into those crafted in the U.S. from the time of its colonization. During those early years, quilts were utilitarian items made from a single piece of cloth, called “whole cloth” on both sides, with wool or some other type of filler material in the center, a type of “fabric sandwich.” Quilts weren’t only used on beds, they were also hung over

windows and sometimes even doorways to minimize cold air drafts. Patchwork quilts were born of necessity; during difficult times when money was tight, bed coverings couldn’t be easily replaced, so torn blankets would be patched, and thinning blankets would be joined together in layers, sometimes filled with other materials for warmth. When fabric finally began being made in America and became more affordable, women started piecing together bits of fabric with the intent of creating beautiful bed coverings or buying whole pieces of fabric to match bed curtains. Some fabrics came from cherished dresses they no longer wore or from other textiles with sentimental value, turning them into quilts that had meaning and creating a tangible family history. Some of these quilts could take years to complete. Whole cloth quilts were still being made in the early 1800s. Rather than using multiple fabrics, these quilters created patterns on solid materials with intricate hand stitching. For

To start, some of the earliest cotton and wool fabrics had a sheen to them and were done in both geometric and floral patterns; this sheen is missing on most reproduction fabrics. Fabrics that were homespun were also dyed at home in the 1800s, until fabric became more commercially available near the end of the century. These dyes were natural, made from things like nut shells, bark, clay and plants; when fabrics were dyed by hand, they could go through the fabric to the reverse side, this is particularly true with indigo. And since dye colors were done one at a time, many times they didn’t line up correctly with each other. These are things to check for when purchasing a 19th century quilt in order to be sure none of the fabrics are contemporary. There are many more details, including period colors, styles, and more you need to know when buying an antique quilt, so do your research first. One thing to keep in mind is that a quilt can be made from actual antique or vintage pieces of fabric and sewn

together with correct period threads, yet the quilt itself may still have been made in modern times. With the ease of purchasing old clothing, thread, bindings and other textiles online and at auctions, the general pieces of the quilt puzzle may fit together, but care must be taken to examine every detail individually, from stitching to period style, in order to ensure the quilt was definitely made during its purported era. From Bob Dylan To Claude Monet To Vincent Van Gogh: It Was A Wild Sale At Woodshed

A giclee print titled “Train Tracks,” pencil signed and numbered (75/295) by Bob Dylan, from the singer-songwriter’s “Drawn Blank Series,” sold for $5,312. “The Bob Dylan print sale was a success, with all lots selling amid brisk bidding,” said Bruce Wood, the owner of Woodshed Art Auctions. “The Prestige Signature Collection was unusually slow, with only about 20 percent of lots selling. However, several of the prime lots did receive strong bidding. I think the Dylan sale got so much attention, people weren’t as aware of session two.” The Dylan prints, all from his “Drawn Blank Series” of artworks based on drawings done between 1989 and 1992, certainly did enjoy pre-sale buzz. The circa 2013 prints

And they were quite large, 42-by-32.75 inches, framed. The unframed temperaand-gouache on medium weight bond paper attributed to Edvard Munch (painter of “The Scream,” one of the most instantly recognizable images in all of fine art) was titled “Study, The Sick Child.” It depicted Johanne Sophie Munch, the artist’s older sister. The subject was repeated in a number of paintings,

etchings, lithos and drawings done from 1885 to 1926. The gouache-on-paper attributed to Marc Chagall was titled, simply, “Lovers.” It was signed lower right and had a collector’s stamp verso. It is similar in style to his work titled “The Betrothed and the Eiffel Tower.” Lovers were a common theme for Chagall. Very often the lovers appear to be floating in time and space along with other people, instruments, plants and animals around them. The oil-on-tempera painting attributed to Gustav Klimt, titled “Girl Standing,” was likely a study of a 1912 portrait Klimt did of Mada Primavesi, now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Klimt reportedly created several studies of Ms. Primavesi, varying the elements in each. The study came with a certificate from the van Hassel Galleri in

It’s not often Bob Dylan shares center stage with anyone, certainly not 19th and early 20th century painters, but that’s exactly what happened on Sept. 20 when a collection of 25 limited edition giclee prints signed and numbered by the singer-songwriter came up for bid alongside such fine art luminaries as Edvard Munch, Marc Chagall and Gustav Klimt. It was a two-session online-only auction, conducted by Woodshed Art Auctions, based in Franklin, Mass. Session one featured the 25 signed Dylan prints, which each carried estimates of $2,000-$3,000 and ended up selling for prices ranging from $5,312 (“Train Tracks”) to a pair of giclees titled “Cassandra” ($1,250 and $1,062). The runner-up lot was titled “Cityscape,” selling for $3,750. Session two, held later that day, was one of Woodsheds Art Auctions’ popular Prestige Signature Collection sales, which feature artworks (most of them attributions) by many of the most famous names in fine art, but at attractive price points. The top three lots – by Edvard Munch (1863-1944), Marc Chagall (1887-1985) and Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) – topped out at $40,000 each.

bidding was facilitated by Invaluable.com. The circa 1905 cypress table was 27 inches high, having a top that was 29.75 inches in diameter. Jindai-sugi is a traditional method of carving Japanese cypress, which have naturally broken down fibers due to water and mud exposure over many years. Bradstreet developed a method of creating a similar effect in a shorter period of time in a technique he called jin-di-sugi, or sugi. The technique involved searing the surface of the wood and scrubbing it with a wire brush. The exposed raised grain of the soft surface would then be carved by hand and stained or painted. Bradstreet was an important contributor to the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Cowan’s Fine and Decorative Arts sale held Oct. 20 and 21 in Cincinnati, Ohio, was filled with enough drama and excitement to fuel several auctions, but in the end, the sale really came down to two things - an important piece of Kentucky case furniture and the liquidation of a fine collection. First, the Kentucky piece, this being the Capt. John Cowan (1748-1823) Kentucky desk and bookcase. Right up front, no, there is no relation between Capt. Cowan and Cowan’s Auction’s Wes Cowan. “Wouldn’t that have been something,” stated Wes Cowan with a smile. had undergone a complete cosmetic restoration, with no small detail overlooked. Complete with a tandemaxle trailer, it headed off to a new port for a within-estimate bid of $34,800. Some of the curiosities in Schalebaum’s collection would have been quite at home in a historical museum, if not a Ripley’s Believe It or Not attraction. “Charlie had a real curiosity for objects of the past. He loved historical memorabilia, antique advertising, folk art, nautical memorabilia, antiquities – you name it,” Sammet said. “If he saw something unusual that he thought he might never see again, he bought it.” Many of the esoteric items Schalebaum acquired had a nautical theme, like the original canvas life preserver ring from the U.S.S. The late Charlie Schalebaum needed no introduction at the renowned Hershey Car Show. He was a legend in the trade, known far and wide as the “King of Hershey” for his consistently high-quality displays of automobilia. On Oct. 14, Milestone Auctions of suburban Cleveland, Ohio, conducted a 496-lot sale of Schalebaum’s fine automobiles, automotive art, and eclectic array of antiques that Milestone co-owner Chris Sammet described as “an absolutely unique collection of conversation starters.” Not surprisingly, the bigticket items of the day were Schalebaum’s beautifully maintained luxury cars. A West Coast online bidder secured the top lot, a 1982 Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible with only 15,707 miles on its odometer. Finished in classic blue over silver with a black interior, the elegant automobile glided to $39,600 against a presale estimate of $15,000$25,000. A four-wheeled flashback to 1972, the secondhighest lot was a super clean, all-original Volkswagen delivery van that had clocked only 25,000 miles. “Charlie spent a lot of money on new parts and maintenance to keep the van in great condition,” commented Sammet. “It’s very unusual to see a VW delivery van in such great condition, so we knew there would be a lot of interest in it.” Estimated at $8,000$12,000, it commanded a winning bid of $20,400. Seafaring bidders recognized the rare opportunity that came in the form of a 1961 Chris-Craft Continental wood boat with high-style jet-age tailfins. Fully loaded with all the most desirable options, the sleek 21-footer

synergy resulted in 37.5 percent of the auction lots selling through the online site and contributing $126,300 toward the bottom line. “Most of the bidding came through the internet and phones, but a nice

How Important Is Provenance To Value

www. johnstinger.com

“What’s It Worth: Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich Here’s a very simple question. Would you rather own an item previously owned by me or by President John F. Kennedy? The answer is obvious. Provenance basically means “an established and provable line of ownership. However, there is a huge difference between “saying something is true and being able to “prove it beyond a shadow of doubt. “My mother’s brother’s neighbor said it’s true is not indisputable and undeniable proof. The stronger the proof, the greater the potential value. There are varying levels of “provable provenance. Certificates of authenticity can help, but alone they’re rarely enough. Historical documents such as birth and death certificates can sometimes help. Letters can help. The more specific and believable, the stronger they are. Photographs can offer verifiable proof. Newspaper articles can also sometimes establish provenance. And these are just a few forms of proof of provenance. Think of it this way: Before you dig into your pocket to purchase an item based upon the item’s supposed provenance, you’re going to say, “Prove it. The same applies to what you’re selling. If you plan on selling something having added value because of a specific

in 2016. That’s the value of provenance.
