RSL Auctions To Debut New Gallery With Dec. 7 Sale Of Banks, European Toys, And Part II Of Allen Liffman Black Americana Collection Ray Haradin, Steven Weiss and Leon Weiss, the R, S, and L of RSL Auction Company, will officially open the doors to their new headquarters on Saturday, Dec. 7, with a 700-lot auction of banks, toys, and black Americana. Conveniently located on U.S. Hwy. 22 East in Whitehorse, N.J., halfway
between Allentown, Pa., and Newark, N.J., the partners’ spacious, new 6,000-squarefoot venue is 20 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport, off I-78. Previously, RSL held its sales at the suburban Baltimore gallery of auctioneer Richard Opfer, who also presided over their events.
“Only the location will change,” said Ray Haradin. “Rick will still be calling our auctions, and our friends in the toy hobby can count on the same hospitality and camaraderie they’ve always enjoyed at our sales.” Also as in the past, all forms of bidding will be available, including live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers. The auction will begin with Part II of a New York collector’s architectural still bank collection that was introduced to bidders last December. There are many exquisite painted examples among the 100 lots of architectural “stills,” including the best red version of an Ives, Blakeslee Palace Bank that Haradin says he has ever seen. On the back of the bank 1886 J. & E. Stevens Breadwinners cast-iron mechanical bank. is the name and address of Est. $35,000-$45,000. RSL Auctions image. the original owner: “Horace Marion Fulton, 1211 Vermont Avenue.” Estimate:
$18,000-$22,000. A near-mint, green variation of a J. & E. Stevens Multiplying Bank must have mystified youngsters of a century ago. When a penny is inserted, two mirrors on the bank’s side panels cause the coin to “multiply” and appear as three pennies, possibly a parable to teach children that a penny saved is a penny earned, and then some. The ingenious bank is expected to make $10,000-$15,000. Additionally, there are fine painted examples of a State Bank, City Bank, Boston State House, Crown Bank and 1882 Church. One of the rarest pieces in the sale is a circa-1915 Kenton Hardware Woolworth Building on base, with provenance from the Donal Markey collection. “The base is what makes this particular bank so rare,” Haradin noted. It will be offered with a $6,500-$8,500 estimate.
Circa-1905 J. & E. Stevens Calamity mechanical bank, one of the 10 best known. Est. $28,000-$35,000. RSL Auctions image.
Next to cross the auction block will be a selection of ever-popular spelter banks, including a very rare, circa1930s German-made Mickey Mouse with Ball on base. It is estimated at $3,000-$4,500. The spelters are followed by another 100 lots of still banks, led by a circa-1907 Lincoln Bust Safe, from the J.M. Harper series of safe banks. One of only two known, it is entered with a $5,000-$7,000 estimate. Always a highlight of RSL’s auctions, the Early American tin section, features bell toys and Ives clockwork productions. An Ives Uncle Tom the Fiddler toy, which also appeals to collectors of black Americana, features a cloth-dressed character who plays his fiddle when wound up. It is a rare variation with an orange and yellow painted base with aqua striping. Estimate: $5,500$7,500. Another wonderful Ives toy is a near-mint, CivilWar-themed Daughter of the Regiment, made in 1874. The historical toy depicts a pretty young woman in Southern attire. Retaining its rare original box, this very desirable survivor is estimated at $7,500-$10,500. Cast-iron horse-drawn and automotive toys are the
perfect lead-in for an assortment of mechanical banks in consistently superior condition. Haradin says the circa1905 football-themed Calamity Bank to be auctioned is “in pristine-plus condition and one of the ten best examples known.” Estimate: $28,000-$35,000. Another prized mechanical entry is an 1886 Breadwinners Bank designed by Charles Bailey and manufactured by J. & E. Stevens. Considered one of the greatest banks ever produced, it served as a three-dimensional commentary on the harmful nature of monopolies and the rise of unionism that subsequently led to the passage of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Near perfect and in very good working order, the bank could reach $35,000-$45,000 at auction. Yet another stellar lot is a near-pristine, circa1930 Hubley Ferris Wheel Bank on base, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. Part II of the 30-year Allen Liffman black Americana collection fills several hundred lots in the auction. The broad scope of this fabled collection encompasses trade stimulators, advertising, paintings and posters; wind-up, tin-litho and soft toys; bisques and porcelains. black-theme smoking accessories includes pipe holders, match safes, and other tobacciana items. Every imaginable type of “jigger” toy is found in the Liffman collection, as well as some of the scarcest early games. A circa-1895 black dandy ball-toss game is made of papier-mache, cardboard and wood, and is estimated at $3,500-$5,500. An outstanding selection of European toys is highlighted by a 15-inch-tall Doll et Cie steam-accessory lighthouse. All hand-painted, it comes with two small steampowered boats that circumnavigate the structure when the toy is activated. The colors of paint chosen for this beautiful French production include teal, coral, mustard yellow and a burnished red on the simulated brick basin. Estimate: $6,000-$9,000. The European lineup continues with a rare Marklin Central Station with canopy in excellent condition, est. $4,500-$6,500; several very nice Lehmann and Martin wind-ups; and a pristine, boxed Tippco Silver Racer motorcycle with sidecar, est. $3,500-$4,500. The ultimate prewar Japanese tinplate auto, a circa-1930 KY Franklin 2door car with working headlights, yellow-pinstriped turquoise body and deep blue chassis, will likely command a winning bid of $9,000$12,000. It will be followed by an additional assortment of still banks, which will close out the session. The Dec. 7 auction will begin at 10 a.m. A complimentary buffet lunch will be served. Petroliana & Automobilia Specialist Matthews Auction Co. To Operate As Division Of Morphy’s, Effective Jan. 1 Dan Morphy, CEO of Morphy Auctions, has confirmed that Matthews Auction Co. of Nokomis, Ill., will become a division of Morphy’s as of Jan. 1, 2014. Dan Matthews, owner of the Midwestern auction house known for its highprofile sales of antique and vintage petroliana and automobilia, will head the new department. “This is a great matchup,” said Morphy. “We’ve always wanted to expand and develop our automotiverelated category into a standalone division with its own specialized sales, and at the same time, Dan Matthews has built an exceptional auction company that is respected by petroliana and automobilia collectors everywhere. We already share many clients in common with Matthews, so it will be a seamless transition.” Morphy’s will perpetuate the successful formula Matthews Auction Co. has already established, holding four or five major sales per year in conjunction with popular petroliana shows. These events include the twiceyearly Chicagoland Petroleum & Advertising Show in Peotone, Ill.; the Iowa Gas Swap Meet; and the Check the Oil (CTO) Show in Dublin, Ohio. The first auction reflecting the new business union between
Morphy’s and Matthews Auction Co. is slated for Feb. 28, prior to the Peotone show. Dan Matthews, who authored the reference “The Fine Art of Collecting Petroliana,” is considered by many to be the top authority in his field. While his own auction company might well have continued to thrive as the market leader within its niche in the years to come, Matthews said he recently came to the conclusion that he needed to “take it to the next level.” While picking up a quarter-million-dollar collection of automotive advertising signs in New England, Matthews said he noticed that the consignor also had several important decorative art collections that were being parceled out to other auction houses. “I thought, ‘If I had been associated with Morphy’s, the consignor would have given all of the collections to me, because it’s always easier to go to a one-shot place,’” Matthews recalled. That was one important factor in his decision to merge with Morphy’s, which is a full-service auction house, but it wasn’t the main reason, Matthews said. “I like meeting with people and making sure that things get done right, like cataloging and advertising, but I don’t like the actual

office part of it or being a manager,” Matthews confessed. “I’ve always said you make your own destiny, so when Dan Morphy offered me an attractive package that would free me to do what I enjoy most, I decided to go for it.” Matthews, who holds an auctioneer’s license in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky and New Hampshire, plans to obtain a Pennsylvania license, as well, but he and his current staff will continue to be
based in Nokomis, Ill. In summary, Dan Morphy stated, “There are very few people in the antiques and auction business who are as respected as Dan Matthews. His tremendous knowledge and personal integrity put him right up there with the best of the best. Found In Scotland And Sold In America: Extremely Rare Toy Bank Sells For $266,500
Freeman’s Americana department head Lynda Cain. The only known example, and attributed to the famous toy designer Charles A. Bailey, the bank was found in an attic in Peebles, Scotland. Edinburgh-based auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull were called to assist in determining the unusual bank’s worth. It was there that specialist Douglas Girton discovered that the bank was American. He then
scrollwork. The rectangular base features an open-work, geometric design, which flanks the cast iron title “Coasting Bank.” F.H. Griffith, in his article “Coasting Bank” published in the April 1955 issue of Hobbies Magazine, chronicles William J. Stackhouse’s discovery of an advertisement for the Coasting Bank in Ehrich’s Fashion Quarterly from 1884. According to Griffith, “this bank is not known to be in any collection and the catalog offers us our first information about it.” Although there is no patent information available for the Coasting Bank, certain strikingly conspicuous features warrant an attribution to the illustrious bank designer Charles A. Bailey. Bailey worked for J. & E. Stevens Company from the 1880s to about 1915, when he established himself as an independent designer and manufacturer. He is responsible for many great mechanical banks, including the rare Bismark Pig Bank and the Germania Exchange Bank, both featured alongside the Coasting Bank in the Ehrich’s Fashion Quarterly advertisement. Bailey had a known penchant for utilizing lead or white metal; the Coasting Bank’s cast lead figure, therefore,
serves to reaffirm the attribution. Given their similarities in general action and overall design, especially with regards to the cast floral scroll work
present on both triangular coin receptacles, this bank might have served as the predecessor to the “Shoot the Chute” mechanical bank designed by
Charles A. Bailey for J. & E. Stevens Co. in 1906. For more information, visit, www.freemans auction.com.

The total low estimate of items sold was approximately $13.2 million, and it generated $18 million, approximately $5 million over low estimate. There were 167 items that generated $25,000 or more, and 50 items generated $50,000 or more. Nine were in excess of $100,000. Stan Musial Continues To Rewrite The Record Books In $7.7 Million Heritage Sports Auction A half-century after his retirement, Stan “The Man” Musial exhibited the strength of his enduring legacy with eye-popping prices realized for the contents of his personal collection in Heritage Auctions’ Nov. 7 to 9 Sports Collectibles Signature Auction. “We were pleased, but not particularly surprised,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “The success is a tribute to Musial’s lifelong service to the St. Louis Cardinals franchise and to all of baseball. The results are easily interpreted as a last expression of gratitude from his many fans.” The ring presented to Musial in recognition of the Cardinals’ 2011 World Championship provided the greatest fireworks of the collection, commanding a stunning $191,200, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Musial artifact. His 2006 National League Championship ring was the evening’s runner-up at $101,575. A handwritten letter from Ty Cobb to Musial sold for dozens of times the Georgia Peach’s average, at $71,700, and “The Man’s” personal copy of his 1948 Bowman rookie card drew $11,950, more than 50 times the average price for examples in the same VG-EX condition. The auction closed over a three-day period beginning with Trading Cards on Nov. 7, the most successful cardboard
offering in Heritage history. Top billing went to the only known 1914-15 J.H. Dugan Baseball Calendar Cabinet Card set, which saw a total price realized of $143,400. A rare 1956 Topps Baseball uncut sheet commanded $38,838, and a file copy of the Babe Ruth #144 card from the celebrated 1933 Goudey set realized the same figure in a PSA “Authentic” slab. Though The Stan Musial Collection served as the most visible component of the memorabilia offerings, closing on Nov. 8, the Cardinals legend shared the spotlight with some fellow Hall of Fame residents at the top of the pricing list. A rare Napoleon Lajoie single signed baseball more than doubled the previous record with a result of $59,750 and an important signed letter from Jackie Robinson followed close behind at $41,825, the top price ever garnered for an autographed artifact of the heroic barrierbreaker. Other auction highlights included a 1955 Stan Musial game-worn St. Louis Cardinals jersey selling for $56,763. A 1941 Babe Ruth single signed baseball given to Stan Musial as a minor leaguer realized $53,775, and a 1984-85 Michael Jordan game-worn original Air Jordan shoes, sourced from a team employee, sold for $31,070. Vermeer Painting On View At Philadelphia Museum Of Art The painting titled “Young Woman Seated at a Virginal,” by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, is currently on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is one of 36 known paintings by Vermeer and the only one remaining in private hands. On loan from the Leiden collection, it will be on view through March 2014. Scholars have debated the authenticity of the painting, but through scientific studies started in the 1990s, it
was deemed to have been done by Vermeer. More recent analysis has proven the canvas is from the same bolt of cloth that Vermeer used for his famous work titled “Lacemaker,” which is at the Louvre. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has the largest collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings in North America. For more information about the museum, visit www.phila museum.org.
