Smithsonian Opens New Galleries For Folk And Self-Taught Art
James Hampton’s “The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly,” 1950-64, is a well-known mixed media piece in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It was the gift of anonymous donors, gift of Margaret Kelley McHugh, Nancy Kelley Schneider and William H. Kelley, and of Harry Lowe.
This is Clementine Hunter’s “Melrose Quilt,” 1960, fabric, from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It was a museum purchase through the Barbara Coffey Quilt Endowment.
This is David Butler’s “Nativity,” 1968, a paint-on-tin work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It was a museum purchase through the Luisita L. and Franz H. Denghausen Endowment.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection of folk and self-taught art represents the powerful vision of America’s untrained and vernacular artists. Represented in the museum’s collection are pieces that draw on tradition, such as quilts and other artworks that reveal a more personal vision. The museum has reimagined its permanent collection galleries to feature 59 recent acquisitions, an expanded presentation of the beloved “Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly” by James Hampton, reopened historic windows and new oak floors. The new galleries recently opened to the public. “The Smithsonian American Art Museum has long recognized folk and self-taught art as integral to the greater story of American art,” said Betsy Broun, the Margaret and Terry Stent director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “The museum’s mission to tell the story of America through the art of its people is particularly relevant at a time when museums everywhere are realizing that an expanded narrative of what American art is is necessary for engaging and satisfying contemporary audiences and accurately portraying the scope of creativity in this country.” Recently acquired works by Consuelo Gonzalez Amezcua, Emery Blagdon, David Butler, Ulysses Davis, Ralph Fasanella, Clementine Hunter, Dan Miller, Joe Minter, Eddy Continued on page 2

This Paul Evans “Cityscape” dining table will be estimated at $3,000-$5,000. Briggs Auction Inc. is excited to announce its Friday, Dec. 9, auction featuring a varied mixture of unique and rare items from Pennsylvania estates and collections, including the remaining estate collection of Richard C. Bull, a known Asian art collector. On Sept. 14, 2012, Briggs sold a fine 20th-century Chinese scroll from the Bull collection for $166,750. The scroll featured a folk art watercolor family scene with hut by master Chinese artist Li Keran. A poem rendered in Chinese characters, meaningful to the artist and representative of the scene, hovered above the image. Featured Asian art and artifacts in the Dec. 9 sale will include a rare and important Chinese doublesided archaic bronze pole finial from the Shang/Early Western Zhou
Dynasty period featuring a cast taotie head surmounted with horns. The reverse is cast with a horned animal head. This artifact had been in the Van Heusden collection and was once exhibited at Stanford University’s museum. It will be estimated at $10,000$20,000. A Chinese Shang Dynasty bronze Yue axe head with relief decorated taotie masks will hold a presale estimate of $1,500-$3,000. Items from a Philadelphia estate will include a spectacular R.J. Horner (fine Victorian furniture maker) carved mahogany threedoor bookcase with large carved maidens, mask sides, and a heavily adorned frieze with figures of Neptune. It will be estimated at $10,000-$12,000. A Paul Evans “Cityscape” dining

Murray, Achilles Rizzoli, Melvin Way, Charlie Willeto, Clarence and Grace Woolsey, Purvis Young and Albert Zahn join visitor favorites by Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, Martín Ramírez and Jon Serl. A striking presence in the galleries is a display of more than 60 sculptures and paintings by Blagdon that represents his constantly changing “Healing Machine.” It is the second-largest installation of his work on public view in the United States. “The first-floor galleries for folk and self-taught art should have a powerful impact on visitors, conveying not only the museum’s commitment to diverse American narratives and manifesting the tremendous quality, depth and power that art by untrained artists can have, but also affirming its rightful position in a museum

of great art,” said Leslie Umberger, the museum’s curator of folk and self-taught art. Since it acquired Hampton’s “Throne” in 1970, the museum has been recognized internationally as a leader in championing the importance of works by artists who have no formal art training. Subsequent acquisitions, including major collections from Herbert Waide Hemphill Jr., Chuck and Jan Rosenak, and David L. Davies in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as recent selections by Umberger, have resulted in the museum becoming one of the only major American museums to clearly advocate for a populist and uniquely American voice within the context of great art. On public view for the first time in the new installation of the “Throne” are Hampton’s personal journal, written primarily in an asemic, or unreadable script, and a chalkboard showing some plans for the “Throne” sketched by Hampton. The journal will be on display for a limited time. While the “Throne” may have been viewed as idiosyncratic visionary art when it was first acquired, it has become increasingly understood as a seminal representation of African American cultural and artistic heritage, a complex piece that embodies not just the artist’s personal vision but also a cultural tradition of giving visual testimony to spiritual beliefs. “Studies in African American vernacular art advanced because the Smithsonian American Art Museum took the ‘Throne’ seriously as a work of art long

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Write It Down
The collector had died several years before, assuming his children would keep the collection intact forever. It was a world-class collection numbering thousands of rare items. Other collectors, dealers and auction houses had tried to get the collection for years, but the collector resisted. Now, in a heartbeat, the collector’s family had consigned it for sale. What was gained and what was lost? We are all temporary custodians of our collections. What we own will pass to other collectors in time. The only exceptions would be items that pass into reputable public hands (museums with a commitment to preserve them). As
provenance, the books were nice but not particularly valuable. With them, to me, they are of great importance. When my daughters ultimately inherit them, and perhaps wish to sell them, the bookplate, receipt from the seller, and provenance will ensure that the value of these items is maintained. I see so many collectors who believe fervently in telling their children about their pieces but never think of writing it down. They view those verbal conversations as being so important, but if the child does not share the interest, then the information is lost. The end result is like the collection that I first mentioned, and the pieces are sold for a fraction of their true value. So what are the action steps? 1) Do a regular inventory of your collection, and keep a copy at home, in your safe deposit box, and with your attorney.
2) Prepare a written copy of where you purchased pieces, how much you paid, and any other important information you can provide. Keep a copy at home and preferably on the Cloud or a flash drive. 3) Where possible, put slips of paper or labels with your pieces providing some information about them. My other counsel is that you cannot control things from the grave. You can prepare your heirs but you cannot direct them after death. Educate your heirs, but allow them to decide what they will do with the collection. The collection went to auction, and it brought a fraction of its true value. While the collector was gone, his heirs never knew that they made a small amount on what could have been a huge sale. And for the lucky buyers, they now have the chance to put their own provenance on the pieces and perhaps wait for their own sale.

collectors, we have invested in those antiques, held them near and dear, spent money to preserve them, and studied them. But, did we write it all down? The collection came to market, but the history was gone. What about the discoveries and parallels of others in published works? Perhaps the time it was included in an exhibition and the records of who owned it before? This information is not only historically vital for the future, but, more importantly, it will ensure the value of the piece at auction. On my own bookshelf are a number of very special books to me. They came from the library of Robert and Ethel Kennedy. I purchased them from a reputable dealer in Washington, D.C. While they have author inscriptions, it was also the bookplate containing the provenance of each volume that encouraged me to buy them. Without that

Rago To Premier “Remix
OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 10-5
Design Auction Where Old School Meets New School Debuts Dec. 2 and interesting rooms can’t be pinned to a decade or design period. To prove it, Rago has curated a mix of contemporary design with everything from Rococo to Anglo-Indian and Americana. “Every great designer aspires to compose a room with pieces that create the impression of having been collected over time, said
Arlen Sam Brown, Rago’s stylist and the specialist in charge of Remix. “When objects really shouldn’t communicate well, but do, it’s like a group of fascinating people brought together for a great dinner party. That’s ReMix. Rago has filled the sale with sexy, stylish pieces of modern design, urbane antiques, heirlooms, and contemporary and
classical art and shown how well they mix. Find your design personality: Modern/Rococo, Modern/Louis, Modern/Rustic, Modern/Uncommon, Modern/Nouveau, Modern/World Culture, Modern/Classic or a remix all your own. Highlights will include Malcolm Bray, “Picture This, painted Louis XV style, circa 1855, over-mantel mirror, USA, 2014; a set of 12 mid-century dining chairs, France; a pair of Eames screens, mid 20th century; a pair of Italian lounge chairs and ottomans, mid 20th century; and several designs

From Pig To Product, Museum Goes “Whole Hog” For Early Iron In early America, certain sorts of “pigs” - made of iron did indeed fly: off Colonial docks to far-flung markets. Every object made out of iron or steel - from a cell phone, to a chandelier, to a car, from a building to a branding iron began its journey in humble beginnings as a piece of iron ore. Although our 18th- and early 19th-century American ancestors used iron-made objects for their functionality, many were also works of art. It’s these pieces that will finally get their due respect in a new exhibition at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum; “From Forge and Furnace: A Celebration of Early American Iron” will open on Thursday, Nov. 24, and will remain on view indefinitely. From the lightest tinplated cookie cutter to the heaviest stove, iron implements were the essential wares of everyday life and commerce in early America. “From Forge and Furnace” will feature a wide array of approximately 100 objects, including weathervanes and decorative eagles; utilitarian objects such as hinges, a pot lifter and a soldier-shaped doorstop; kitchen equipment such as wafer irons, ladles, skewers and toasters; household accessories such as firebacks and a miniature flat-iron; lighting fixtures including chandeliers and sconces; and tools and equipment including an eel spear, a branding iron, a gardening claw and an anvil. “The Colonial Williamsburg collection is perfectly suited to support an exhibition such as this. Since the 1920s, the foundation’s curators have sought out the full range of materials used in early America, both the fashionable and the utilitarian,” said Ronald Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation and museums. “Close inspection often reveals that even the simplest
objects exhibit a period beauty all their own.” Among the most unusual and historically significant objects to appear in “From Forge and Furnace” is, alas, one of its least attractive. Known as an iron “pig” (so named for the way in which it is cast in the form of piglets nursing on a sow), it was cast at the Occoquan Furnace located in Prince William County, Va., sometime between 1755-65. Why do we care about it today, and what makes this ugly piece of iron worthy of inclusion in an exhibition in an art museum? Its provenance. Little “piggies” like this one were also transformed into bar iron at Occoquan, and sold to local celebrities. In April 1758, George Washington placed an order for “two ton, of one-inch, square bars - one ton, of threeinch broad, and half an inch thick, ditto.” Unfortunately, although the furnace was in full blast by October 1759, it was apparently too late for Colonel Washington’s needs, and his money was refunded in November 1760. All was forgiven, however, as John Ballendine, who established the forge, was a frequent guest at Mount Vernon, as was his sister, Fanny. As Charlotte (of Web fame) was known to have said of Wilbur, this hunk of iron is “Some Pig,” which needs no lipstick to make it historically attractive. “Things made of iron are so commonplace, and have been for so long, that they are generally overlooked and taken for granted,” said Erik Goldstein, curator of mechanical arts and numismatics, who curated the exhibition.
“The Wedding Fable” cast-iron stove plate is attributed to Marlboro Furnace in Frederick County, Va., probably 1768, and was a gift of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, 1932.809.1. The cast-iron stove figure of George Washington was possibly by J.L. Mott Iron Works (active 1853-1950), New York, N.Y., possibly 1850-1900, and was a gift of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, 1931.809.1. “By gathering a wide variety of implements because they are all made from this metal, ‘From Forge and Furnace’ shows how truly beautiful and indispensable iron was to early Americans.” Along with the Occoquan Furnace iron pig iron in the exhibition will be numerous objects that are far more beautiful and decorative. A graceful, eight-arm chandelier made of tinned sheet iron, iron and paint (made in America, possibly New England, 180030) shows with its elegant, curving arms, crimped pans and perfect symmetry that anything practical that could be made out of tinned sheet iron could be both fanciful and fully functional. Examples like this one were most commonly used in large, public spaces such as churches, meeting rooms and taverns. About a century after George Washington placed his
Mid-Century Modern Steals The Show At Bunch Auctions Hybrid Sale Bunch Auctions kicked off the first day of November with its Fall Decorative and Fine Arts sale. The company coined it a “hybrid” sale, being a variety auction that contained both cataloged and biweekly portioned material. There were 641 cataloged lots offered alongside 368 biweekly lots, combined totaling $122,000 from the hammer. Prices reported do not include buyer’s premium. Furniture was the star of the show, with three of the top five lots coming from this category. A Mid-Century Modern dresser by Gio Ponti for M. Singer & Sons was the
