On Oct 17, Ray Haradin’s specialty company Old Toy Soldier Auctions (OTSA) pulled out the big guns with the James Cook collection, the headliner of its “Investment Rarities” sale. The total was a new house record for OTSA. “This was our most successful auction ever, with a 100 percent sell-through rate and an average lot value of nearly $3,000,” said Haradin. “The sale total exceeded the overall high estimate and our own high expectations. This was the type of collection that comes along once in a blue moon, and toy soldier fans knew it.” Leading the charge was an

Alderfer Auction To Offer French Hero’s Marriage Contract On Wednesday, Dec. 9, the Alderfer Auction Company will offer at auction a rare and historically significant document signed by Napoleon, Josephine and five French marshals as part of a “Legacy Auction - Rare and Important Autographs and Historical Documents” to be held in Hatfield, Pa. Documents signed by both Napoleon and his wife Josephine are rare, and a document having their autographs, as well as five important military leaders of Napoleonic France, is an even rarer occurrence, outside of an institutional collection. In early 19th century France, as it is today, getting married was a special event. In France at that time, church weddings were performed, but only civil marriages were legally binding.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT subdued, at best. Instead of the heavy traffic of dealers and pickers and the ubiquitous old men who always walked the aisle but never bought anything (our theory was that they were toy train or gun collectors, although we never saw packages). The crowds were much smaller. In talking to my old friend Josh Unruh, who has a pretty big space in Black Angus, I learned that the crowds came to his booth late in the morning and early in the afternoon. Having spent some time with Unruh, it was true that the crowds were definitely there later in the day.

So I have heard repeatedly that there is nothing to buy at the markets anymore. Well, I have to disagree. There are just as many treasures at Adamstown as there ever were, and the dealers are far more willing to haggle and drop prices. On a recent Sunday, we found a piece of 18th-century jewelry for my wife, a lovely Standard Scale 1930s train set for my daughter, a big piece of Acoma pottery in perfect shape, and even some toys for the little one. We follow a specific pattern of how we work the antiques mile, beginning at Renninger’s and then to

I saw many old friends, including Jim Morrison, Josh Unruh, Greg Kramer and Nancy Pennypacker, Steve Smoot, and John Bretschneider. The nature of the markets has assuredly changed, as the early morning rush at the crack of dawn seemed

the union. During Napoleon’s time, witnesses to the ceremony would sign contracts of this type on the final page. When Pierre Augustin Hulin, a general in the French Army under Napoleon, was wed to Jeanne Louise Fiersommier, many notable persons attended the ceremony. Hulin, most famous for leading the troops that stormed the Bastille during the French Revolution, had proven his loyalty to France and his Emperor, and the guest list proved it. The document, most notably signed by Napoleon and by Josephine, is also signed by Hortense EugÊnie CÊcile Bonaparte, stepdaughter of Napoleon and daughter of Josephine. Hortense would become Queen of Holland for a short period. To add to the historical importance of this document, five military marshals of France have signed

it. The most significant of signatures is that of Joachim Murat, a marshal, military leader, King of Naples, and brother-in-law to Napoleon. Murat would be executed while trying to regain the throne of Naples in 1815. The other marshals that signed this document, Andre Massena, Louis Nicholas Davout, John Baptiste Bessieres, and Edward Adolphe Mortier, all held prominent positions in the military of France during the French Revolution, Napoleon’s rule, and some after Napoleon was banished to St. Helena after Waterloo. John Baptiste Bessieres would die in battle in 1813, and Edward Adolphe Mortier would be killed during an assassination attempt on French King Louis Philippe I in 1835. The 14-page marriage contract will hold a presale estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. For additional information, call Alderfer Auction at 800-577-8846 or email info@alderferauction.com.

to bring their camera. Retired school teachers and Emporium dealers Maggie Barber and Laura Schreubers will offer holiday craft projects for the children visiting Santa on those days while their parents are shopping. Last year, the Emporium dealers and generous customers filled two boxes for the Marines’ “Toys for Tots” program. Boxes have arrived, and hopefully with help, this feat can be repeated or increased. Customers are encouraged to bring unopened toy donations. For those who dislike fighting for a parking spot or mall crowds, the Emporium is the place to shop. It has ample parking on the street and also a large lot next to the building. Located at 424 High St. in Burlington City, N.J., the Emporium is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. each Thursday and Friday through Christmas. Complimentary coffee and snacks are always available. All of the Emporium dealers wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Schwartz, and a collection of hundreds of cigar box sample labels will likely be top performers. Folk art is represented as well, with an interesting figural sheet iron weathervane and an early 20th-century painted wood mechanical woodshop model. December’s sale will also include contemporary carved and painted pieces by skilled artists, such as an oil painting on wood panel of a spotted horse by Barbara Strawser, as well as a carved and painted bird tree, an eagle, a rooster, and others by Strawser and her former husband, Dan. Sam Maloof Custom Rocking Chair Moves Bidder To $37,500 A California walnut custom rocking chair, handcrafted by Sam Maloof in 2002, took top lot honors when it sold for $37,500 in H e r i t a g e Auctions’ autumn 20th and 21st Century Art + Design Auction on Oct. 10 in Dallas, Texas. The auction’s emphasis on the American Studio Movement drew the attention of bidders who pursued classic furniture forms by the workshops of George and Miriam Nakashima and other modern design masters. “Classic design will always be in style, and we saw bids come in from all over the world,” said Katie Nartonis, consignment director for Fine & Decorative Arts. “Custom Rocking Chair, 2002” came from Maloof’s most recognizable line of furniture creations, and bidders also pursued an extraordinary early credenza from 1961, made of walnut, leather and Pacific

cloth, which sold for $18,750. Additional furniture highlights included a free-edge conoid coffee table, circa 1975, by George Nakashima, which sold for $35,000, and a “Sanso” dining table, for $18,750. A set of well-documented seven grass-seated chairs, circa 1960, sold for $10,000. Among the auction’s extensive selection of fine artworks, “Ore Lode Vein (Phenomena Katherine Wheel Horoscope),” 1971, by Paul Jenkins, brought $18,750, after spending more than 40 years in a private collection. “November Night Tales,” the long out-of-print book of stories by Henry C. Mercer, has been republished by Valancourt Books. Toward the end of his life, Mercer, a noted historian, collector, and tile manufacturer, channeled his antiquarian interests and his love of Gothic literature into “November Night Tales” (1928). For his volume of highly imaginative stories, Mercer drew inspiration from authors like Poe, Shelley, Stoker and Conan Doyle. The 197-page softcover book is being sold for $16.99 at the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle, through www.mercermuseum.org and on Amazon.com.

Artemis Gallery’s Auction Attracting Feverish Bidding On Asian And Ancient Roman Art Museum-worthy examples of classical antiquities and ethnographic art from scores of cultures came together at the Artemis Gallery Auction on Oct. 22 to form a selection whose quality is rarely encountered in a single auction. All of the items offered came with distinguished provenance and an ironclad guarantee that they were legal to purchase. “Bidders responded confidently to those assurances,” said Bob Dodge, the gallery’s co-owner. “By auction day, absentee bids had reached almost $200,000, and there were multiple left bids on many of the lots,” said Dodge. “However, many other bidders seemed to want to hold their cards close to their vests and did not bid till auction day, either online or over the phone. We can’t remember another sale that was as busy as this one.” The top lot, 26B, was an important, larger-than-life size, circa-2nd century CE Roman marble head of Apollo. Carved in classical style with ringlets framing the youthful god’s face, the 13-by-8.5-inch head displayed on a custom plinth could be traced back to a private U.K. collection where it had resided since the 1960s. Against an estimate of $25,000-$35,000, it sold online to a dealer for $50,400. All prices quoted include a 20 percent buyer’s premium. Another Roman highlight was Lot 26, a circa-300 CE legionary stele with the image of a bas-relief eagle holding a wreath. Its Greek inscription translated to: “Julius the Virtuous, Be Well.” Ex. Sarkisian estate, it had been acquired prior

to 1960. The 18-by-26-inch military tombstone realized $11,400. The demand for Roman glass, a pattern that Artemis Gallery had observed in its past several sales, continued its upward momentum. Lot 18, a 3rd-4th century CE freeblown trefoil oinochoe of translucent blue-green glass was previously part of the Denenberg Fine Arts (Los Angeles) collection. The 10 1/8-inch vessel settled at $8,400. The strongest trend noted was the interest in Asian art and antiquities. “Asian was hot and accounted for nearly 30 percent of the sale total,” said Dodge. “Most of the Asian pieces had come from Patrick and Nancy Kipper, who had traveled throughout Asia - India, Thailand, Burma, Japan, making many savvy purchases over a 25-year period. Most of their items met expectations, and many exceeded their pre-sale estimates.” Lot 31E, an 18th-century southern Indian solid-cast bronze figure of Uma (Parvati), consort of Shiva, was purportedly gifted to a previous owner by Mahatma Gandhi, in 1946. Standing 19.5-inches tall, the statue of the elegant deity came with a long line of provenance and realized a within-estimate price of $14,400. Handily exceeding its estimate with a winning bid of $14,400 was Lot 38D, an 18th-century Burmese jeweled bronze Lotus Buddha. Standing 2 feet

An important Egyptian limestone relief of the goddess Hathor, New Kingdom, circa 1570 to 1069 BCE, sold for $22,200. The top lot of the sale was this important, life size-plus Roman This ancient Roman glass trefoil marble head of Apollo. It sold to the oinochoe sold for $8,400. trade for $50,400.

Its estimate at $12,000. provenance also included One of the finest pieces prior sale at Sotheby’s. in the sale was Lot 3, a

23-by-21-inch high-relief limestone sculpture of the Egyptian goddess Hathor. Dating to the 18th to 20th Dynasties (circa 1570-1069 BCE) and formerly in the prestigious Simonian collection (Switzerland), the mysterious sculpture displayed the ears of a cow and a solar disc on its head. It sold for $22,200. The flourishing market for Pre-Columbian art saw an influx of new bidders in the Oct. 22 sale, pursuing such treasures as Lot 58D, circa 600-800 CE male and female “sonriente” (smiling) pottery figures from the Veracruz Remojadas culture of Mexico. Wonderfully detailed and “wearing” headdresses and necklaces, the pair satisfied auction expectations at $8,100. Offered consecutively as Lots 55 and 56, two Mayan polychrome cylinders, one of them painted with a scene of companion spirits, the other depicting a black jaguar, concluded their bidding runs at $5,400

A special feature of the sale was a collection of original, as-found fossils, each in a remarkable state of natural preservation. Leading this group was Lot 86, a Cretaceous (112 to 99.6 million years ago) heteromorphous open-coil ammonite discovered in Morocco. Rarely found in such a large size, the 17.75by-14.5-inch fossil settled at $3,300. For further information, call Teresa Dodge at 720890-7700 or visit www.artemisgallery.com. 4644 Rt. 309, 18078 This Collection represents more than a quarter of a decade of discerning collecting, spanning African-American history from the Revolutionary War through the 20th century. Each and every piece contains African-American content. In addition to the historical significance of the entire Collection, the condition of virtually all the pieces leans to the fine and very fine. The Collection is wide-ranging and focuses on the historical place of the African-American in American society. While the Collection depicts the more somber moments in American history, including slavery and prejudice, this Collection also celebrates and features the many “Firsts” achieved by African-Americans, e.g., the first elected to office, the first aviator, the first tennis player, the first baseball player, the first umpire, etc. Some of these “Firsts” are well-known and heralded in our history, others are quiet achievers. Categories of this Collection include: Military - Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI and WWII; Slavery; Western Cowboys & Soldiers (The Buffalo Soldiers); Political; Social; Stereotypical Advertising and Caricatures; Sports including the Negro Baseball League and 1954 signed Brooklyn Dodgers baseball, musical and other miscellaneous. The Collection spans these categories, featuring and tracking history through fine and rare handwritten documents - important by content and/or by a famous person in our history. One example is a 1932 handwritten letter by George Washington Carver, former slave turned into the great botanist and agricultural innovator, on Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (founded by Booker T. Washington) letterhead, to one of his bright students, “My very own precious boy, Mr. Davis.” In the letter, Mr. Carver encourages the student to continue his experiments ... “we shall collect and identify your specimens and make your drawings.” The Collection also continues history through cabinet cards, photographs (including occupational, soldiers, medical oddities, famous personages, etc.), autographs of famous persons, broadsides, programs, advertising cards, personal paper items, stereo views, prints, postcards, tickets (including antislavery lectures, ‘ 50s/’60s Harlem Globe Trotters), books (including salesman’s book samples, slave books written by former slaves (e.g., including a first edition by Harriet Jacobs, edited by L. Maria Childs - along with a handwritten note from Childs), pamphlets, newspapers, stamps and 19th century currency. The Collection also contains three-dimensional items such as coins, rare medals (e.g., The Gillmore Medal, a 1920 Karl Goetz medal “Die Wacht Am Rhein/Die Schwarz Schande”), iron slave shackles and keys, slave identification piece, tin types, lantern glass slides, oversize Green River Whiskey charger, Blue Star Cafe tin on wood sign “Colored Patrons Only,” advertising signs, including a 1950s Coca-Cola large sign, advertising tins, pinbacks, political buttons, medallions, Buffalo Soldier gear, games, rare tin caricature child’s beverage & tray set. This Collection is a historical treasure trove and is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire rare and scarce pieces of African-American history. Terms: See website for details - AU-1734 * This auction will also be available for bidding on www.liveauctioneeers.com and www.auctionzip.com Absentee bids happily accepted * info@tomhallauctions.com * 610-799-0808
