Alderfer Auction Announces The Sale Of U.S. Model 1847 Colt Walker Revolver C-Company No. 122 FRIDAY DECEMBER 7, 2018 • VOL. 49, NO. 49

Historic Odessa Celebrates The 175th Anniversary Of Charles Dickens’ Classic “A Christmas Carol, In Prose, Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas” On View Now To Dec. 30 This holiday season the Historic Odessa Foundation (HOF) in Odessa, Del., will be having a Dickens of a Christmas as it celebrates the 175th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ indelible classic “A Christmas Carol, In Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas,” first published in 1843. HOF’s 2018 Christmas Holiday Tours and Special Exhibit will run through Sunday, Dec. 30. Visitors will be transported into Charles Dickens’ powerful Christmas tale of redemption as the 244-year old Corbit-Sharp House is transformed into the world of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge with vignettes to include depictions of his counting house; his lodgings; the festive Mr. Fezziwig’s ball; the austere house of Tiny Tim; the parlor of Scrooge’s nephew, Fred; and the cemetery. All of the Historic Houses of Odessa are open and on full festive display for the 2018 holiday season, including special school and family tours and events celebrating “A Christmas Carol,” a special exhibit in the National Historic Landmark Corbit-Sharp House (c. 1774), and the Storybook Trees exhibit in the WilsonWarner House (1769). Only 37 Are Known To Still Exist Alderfer Auction recently announced that an original U.S. Model 1847 Colt Walker will be among the highlights of its Firearms Auction on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The revolver is attributed to the C-Company of the Texas Rangers. Only 37 of these rare

revolvers are known to exist today. The provenance dates back to 1943, when it was discovered by the editor of the Texas Gun Collectors Association. In 1953, it was owned by William H. Robinson Jr. of Gloucester, Mass. In the Texas Gun Collectors Association Newsletter #30, Robinson used his ownership of the gun to become a member of the club. In the 1960s, the Colt appeared in Norm Flayderman’s “Gun Catalog #77” under listing

1166A. In the listing, it’s quoted as “one of the best specimens we have come across in virtually untouched condition.” Over half a century later, the revolver was found boxed in a Montgomery County, Pa., estate.

In October of 2018, the Colt was authenticated by Herb Glass Jr. of Bullville N.Y., firearms consultant and honorary curator of the West Point Museum. “As requested, I have examined U.S. Model 1847 Colt Walker Revolver C-Company No. 122. This examination consisted of complete disassembly and careful examination of all parts. As a result, I find this gun to be a genuine Colt Walker in fine ‘untouched’ condition, the known provenance of which dates to 1943 when it was discovered in Austin, Texas,” Glass said in his evaluation. Markings are crisp and excellent throughout, only the cylinder

Collecting The Obscure: A Look At The 3DO Interactive MultiPlayer latest and greatest technology, few knew what the 3DO Interactive MultiPlayer was. The system did get some excellent media coverage at the time, but that was mostly due to the egocentric nature of Hawkins himself and the fact that the powerful new video game system retailed for close to $700 at a time when less powerful video game systems could be had for $200 or less. The system would experience brutal sales in 1993 for the all important Christmas season. Ironically, some of the best games started to arrive in early 1994. Electronic Arts is credited as one of the most important developers for the system, and some of the publisher’s most popular games and franchises ended up there. “Road Rash,” “Escape from Monster Manor,” and even “John Madden Football” are all great games worthy of checking out. Another popular publisher who stood by the system was Crystal Dynamics. I greatly enjoyed the “Total Eclipse” space shooter game as well as the original pack-in game, “Crash N’ Burn.” Sadly, by 1994, the writing was already on the wall for the 3DO system. Sony and Sega both announced plans to create CD-ROM based 32-bit systems that were much more powerful than the current 3DO system. And while Panasonic eventually initiated steep dis-

counts to their version of the 3DO system, GoldStar would release a version for around $299, but it would fail to reignite interest, as potential buyers were blown away by the Sony PlayStation. The Sony Playstation created such a shock to the video game industry upon its release that by 1996 Sega would be fighting a bitter war for survival and Nintendo would be forced to release their next generation video game system several years early in 1995 (called the Nintendo 64). Nintendo was already starting out in the number two spot due to Sony’s dominance. Ironically, and it is beyond the scope of this article to elaborate any further, but Nintendo could have prevented the release of the Sony Playstation had it simply used Sony to create its rumored CD-ROM drive for the Super NES system as originally planned. Today, the 3DO presents sort of an enigma for collectors and video game enthusiasts to ponder. While it does have collectible value, the system is not in much demand. It does command a respectable value on the secondary market, but collectors should understand that there is absolutely nothing driving demand for failed systems like the 3DO. Systems can be had for anywhere from $100 to $200 on the secondary market depending on condition and what is included. Games

Mention the name Trip Hawkins to most people outside of the video game and computer industry, and you are bound to get a few blank stares. Unlike the popularity of Apple’s founder Steve Jobs or Atari’s charismatic leader, Nolan Bushnell, few recognize the name Trip Hawkins. Hawkins was a gifted Harvard graduate who went to work for Apple Computer in 1982 as the company’s director of strategy and marketing. Rumor has it that he didn’t click well with Steve Jobs and the culture of Apple Computer at the time, so he decided to create his own software company. He named his company Electronic Arts, and it became one of the most successful video game and computer entertainment publishers ever created. Much like most entrepreneurs, Hawkins was not content to just be at the helm of a multimillion dollar computer entertainment company, and by 1990 he was supposedly quite frustrated at the lack of advancements being made in the home video game industry. This gave him a groundbreaking idea. He would simply create the most powerful stand-alone video game system ever conceived. At the time, the industry was abuzz with words like multimedia and interactive entertainment, as the adoption of the compact disc was beginning to allow for far greater advancements than that of limited cartridge-based games. Video games could now display actual full-motion video with Hollywood style budgets and actors driving the plots of most games. By 1991, Hawkins would transition from Electronic Arts to his newly created company called 3DO. By 1993, Hawkins was steadily working to bring his vision to reality. The genius behind the vision was that instead of being a video game hardware manufacturer like Sega or Nintendo, at the time, the 3DO company would not make hardware. Instead, they would simply create the chipset that the system would use and license it to other manufacturers. They would then tempt software publishers

to create games for the system by lowering the royalty charged to produce games for the console to roughly $3 per unit sold. This was in stark contrast to the massive fees levied by Sega and Nintendo to allow companies to produce games for their video game systems. On paper this all sounded like a great idea, and in theory it should have worked, but like most great ideas, technology, application, and marketing are everything, and this is where the 3DO started to stumble. Panasonic agreed to produce the first systems using 3DO’s visionary chipset. On Oct. 4, 1993, the FZ-1 REAL 3DO Interactive MultiPlayer went on sale with little fanfare. It was priced at $699.99 and featured an advanced 32-bit processor with CD-ROM media storage. It was twice as powerful as anything currently being produced by Nintendo and Sega at the time. The system came packaged with the game “Crash N’ Burn,” which was a futuristic combat racing game unlike anything seen on the market at the time. Other releases were in the works but sparse at the time of the system’s release. Software was priced at around $49.99 to $59.99 for each additional title. As you can probably guess, unless you were obsessed with following the home video game industry at the time or had to have the

something I recommend in today’s day and age. The system is a curiosity that won’t see any play in your collection, nor will it become more valuable in the future. There is absolutely nothing driving demand for obscure systems like this that have a very limited following, and sadly nothing Trip Hawkins does in the future will ever change that.

generally cost about $20 and up, and the system does have its fair share of elusive games that are quite valuable. Keep an eye out for “Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties,” which is an adultthemed game that goes for over $100 complete in box. Other rarities include “Lucienne’s Quest,” which can sell for several hundred dollars when complete and in good condition. Aside from value, the system did see almost every exclusive fullmotion arcade shooter produced by American Laser Games released on it. Playing “Mad Dog McCree” on the system with the optional light gun controller is well worth it in my opinion. Collecting the 3DO is not

The Bell Pottery Collection At The Renfrew Museum In Waynesboro, Pa. The Renfrew Museum in Waynesboro, Pa., has been a must-see destination on my radar for several years, but living near Boston, Mass., it has been a little out of the way. During a recent trip to the Mid-Atlantic, I made it a priority to make it to Waynesboro to see this small museum’s permanent exhibit of red earthenware and stoneware, which happens to be the country’s largest public collection of pottery from the

Bell family of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. While on the trip, en route to the museum, I had a chance to acquire a 19th-century red earthenware apothecary jar. In fact, the characteristic that really spoke to me about this jar is that it retained its original merchant label from Houser’s Drug Store on West Main Street in downtown Emmitsburg, Md., a historic little town located about 15 miles southeast of Waynesboro. A previous owner had left a note adhered

to the interior of the original tin lid, suggesting that John Bell (1800-80) may have made the jar in Waynesboro. Potters in the Waynesboro area were small, family-oriented businesses and manufactured wares for the surrounding communities. According to the Renfrew Museum, “The historic folk potteries of the Franklin County region were part of a larger folk art tradition that developed and flourished in the Cumberland and Shenandoah Valleys of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia from the late 1700s to the early 1900s.

Here is a 19th-century red earthenware jar likely made in Waynesboro, Pa., with original merchant’s label from Houser’s Drug Store in Emmitsburg, Md.

They supplied a variety of wares that met the food preparation and storage needs of nearby farm families and communities, often associated with the Pennsylvania German cultural tradition. They also met the aesthetic needs and norms of rural life.” The Renfrew Museum was established in 1973 through a generous bequest on behalf of Emma Geiser Nicodemus (1892-1973). The original farmThe slip decorated red earthenware stead was owned by Daniel bowl attributed to John Bell was one of Royer (1762-1838) from the 40 made for the Snow Hill 1790s through the 1830s and Society/Nunnery, circa 1840. later owned by the

Much of the pottery collection is displayed in glass cases inside the Visitors Center, which happens to be a converted barn original to the property. If you are not familiar with the Renfrew Museum, it is a must-visit. The picturesque landscape surrounding the farm buildings is breathtaking, and there is more to see than simply pottery.

Of course, the focus of the pottery collection centered around John Bell. Born in Hagerstown, Md., Bell learned the potter’s trade from his father, Peter Bell (1775-1847), and he later emerged as one of America’s preeminent red earthenware and stoneware potters once his pottery opened in 1833. In many ways, Bell’s techniques and innovative glazes are among the best produced during the period; many scholars even refer to some of Bell’s red earthenware production as the best in America. Upon Bell’s death in 1880, his son, John W. Bell (1828-95), who worked for his father for many years, gained ownership of the pottery and operated the Waynesboro business from 1881 until his death in 1895. There was a fire in 1899, and the Bell pottery ended production all together in Waynesboro in 1908. Continued on page 18

Flack Sale Proves Pennsylvania German Folk Art Remains A Viable Market Fraktur And Quilts Among Highlights Of Exciting Auction By Karl Pass Pook & Pook Inc. of Downingtown, Pa., held a 256lot single-owner sale for Paul and Rita Flack of Solebury, Pa., on Oct. 13. No strangers to the Pennsylania auction scene or Pook & Pook, this was the couple’s sixth catalog sale (third with Ron and Debbie Pook). The sale was 96 percent sold (247 lots of the 256). The hammer total was $619,325; gross total realized, $758,010. The auction house charges 22 percent buyer’s premium (in-house) and 25 percent (online). Nearly 18 percent of the sale sold to online buyers ($110,550). Paul Flack has spent decades hunting antiques throughout the Keystone State. Even at 91, there are few country sales and shows that Paul misses. Among his loves is Pennsylvania German material such as fraktur, redware, and quilts. The couple’s last auction was six years ago. Their first, in 1976. A big one was held on-site through Christie’s in 1997 at their historic farmhouse in Holicong, Bucks County. Today, they live in a new house outside of New Hope. A casualty actuary by trade, Paul spent the bulk of his career in Philadelphia, but the couple also lived and worked for a time in Camp Hill, Pa. He still helps in the office of son David’s garden center and nursery business, Bountiful Acres in Buckingham Township. The Flacks also have a daughter, Anne, who lives on a farm in Vermont. Among other collecting interests are Native American art and artifacts, among them Susquehannock Indian material (not included in this auction). A large category and

Alfred’s Auction Continued from page 4

the clock’s early repair history had been carved into the back of the door by local 19th century clockmakers, complete with their names and dates. The clock sold for $6,750 against its $5,000 estimate. A collection of antique shotguns included a 19th century Hollis & Sheath London Fine Twist double barrel shotgun and a 19th century Bentley & Sons double barrel shotgun with its ramrod and working patch holder. The latter was the highlight, drawing ardent bidding and selling at $500, well above its $125-$150 estimate. A charming 19th-century oil painting, still in its original gilt frame, of young Caroline

Holcombe wearing a red dress and holding a doll was a crowd favorite and topped out at $1,000, exceeding its $700 estimate. A similarly done oil-onboard portrait of her father, Richard Holcombe, was not nearly as popular, selling for only $250. Neither portrait was signed. They are thought to have been done by a local itinerant artist, though there may be a signature under the frame or beneath the back boards. Furniture, far ranging in date and style, saw just as wide a range in bidding interest and price realized. The standout was a Chippendale chest of drawers with four graduated drawers, fluted quarter columns and ogee bracket feet, with a particularly fascinating internal secret locking mechanism in the top drawer. In excellent condition, the chest of drawers overtook its $900 estimate and sold for $1,200. An interesting back story accompanied a walnut secretary desk, in

There are many viewpoints on the subject of condition and what are acceptable amounts of restoration. It could be seen as ironic since if there was ever a time not to be picky and look down on something for having restoration, it would be in today’s market, when the supply is lower and less material comes out as opposed to 40 or 50 years ago. A half century ago, many collectors were fine with some levels of restoration if it brought an object properly back to its original state. “Something is not worth one cent less once restored to its original beauty, in fact I think it aids it,” said Flack after the auction. “You expect a certain amount of wear and tear, and I think a certain level of

The Renfrew Museum Continued from page 9

An employee of the Bell pottery, not largely recognized today, Mary Elizabeth, was John W.’s sister and was employed during his tenure as a decorator. She also signed pieces. To my knowledge, she’s one of the few females associated with utilitarian pottery production during this time period. As I entered the museum Visitors Center, my eyes were immediately drawn to the crystal clear glass cases that lined the back half of the room. Inside these cases were dozens of original molds used at the Bell pottery in the 1800s. Surrounding the molds in every direction was stoneware and red earthenware, as well as some original photographs and a book preserving birth and death

records. Resting in front of the exhibit was a painted rooster weathervane that once stood atop the Bell pottery. I quickly noticed red earthenware impressed with John Bell’s first known mark, “I. BELL,” but there were also many pieces stamped with some of the Bell pottery’s better-known marks, like “J. Bell,” “John Bell,” “John Bell / Waynesboro,” and “John W. Bell / Waynesboro.” Red earthenware from other potters is also represented in the collection, such as Bell’s brother, Solomon Bell (1817-82), in Strasburg, Va.; another brother, Upton Bell (1820-99), in Waynesboro; Daniel M. Baker’s Pottery in Waynesboro; Anthony Baecher in Winchester, Va.; Jacob Heart in Chambersburg, Pa.; and the J. Eberly & Company pottery,

Center. The most significant piece of pottery from this collection is likely a small, tinglazed red earthenware jar with cobalt decoration made by John W. Bell, which has been inscribed around the rim “April 22, 1858 Waynesboro.” Furthermore, the base is inscribed “JWB,” and the jar has also been stamped “John Bell.” This type of tin-glazed red earthenware is wellknown from the Bell pottery today but is also considered

very rare. Two slip-decorated bowls in the exhibit were commissioned from John Bell (about 1840) for the Snow Hill Society. Even though these bowls are widely published today, I never get tired of seeing them. A large group of “Nunnery bowls” sold in 1997 when the contents of the Snow Hill Nunnery were sold by Horst Auctioneers in Ephrata, Pa. Snow Hill was in Quincy, Pa., close to Waynesboro. This church may have been a regular customer of the Bell pottery, seeing that other marked wares from John Bell were at Snow Hill. All in all, it took me a few hours to see the entire pottery collection, and it’s an experience I will never forget. Have Something to Sell? Looking For Something?
