The demand for the poster allowed it to race far beyond its preauction estimate of $100,000+. “This poster is simply stunning and an unquestioned rarity that commanded the attention of serious collectors of American Political and Abraham Lincoln memorabilia,” stated Heritage Auctions Americana Director Tom Slater. “There are only two others known to exist, and one is in the New York Historical Society. This poster is the ultimate Lincoln display item, a lot that immediately becomes the centerpiece of an elite Lincoln or political collection.” Multiple bids also poured in for the Abraham Lincoln seminal 1858 political letter, ex. Douglas in 1858 and was urged by Asbury to pin down Douglas on the issue of the extension of slavery in the territories. Lincoln’s political savvy in trying to frame the issues of the campaign was nothing short of brilliant. Douglas’ response, known as the Freeport Doctrine, claimed to take “no moral position” on slavery while admitting of the necessity of local police authority to enforce the practice, positions which managed to alienate anti-slavery voters and slavery advocates at the same time. While Douglas won reelection to the Senate, the Freeport Doctrine undermined his chances in the 1860 presidential election, which Lincoln handily won. BODNAR’S AUCTION SALES

I hear many traditional antiques dealers grousing about the current popularity of mid-century modern. For lovers of brown furniture, to see all the vinyl, chrome and laminate is truly painful. And yet, mid-century modern is the path going forward for much of the antiques trade. This past weekend, I was out shopping at a favorite cooperative shop, and I spotted a great 1970s bentwood chair, really good quality, and the condition was spot on. In

15-piece dining room suite that they owned. I sold it years ago because it never would have fit in any house I owned, but I pine for it. So you might ask why do I have nostalgia for 1950-60s furniture? Because my grandparents wintered in Arizona, and that property was filled with modern furniture. Here in the west, Moderne is the style to have. It is was represents the post-war prosperity that built the American West. A Moderne sideboard is a symbol of the best of the period. In thinking about the frequent cry that I hear among dealer friends that young people do not collect, I have decided that it is really a combination of three things that have changed the market. First is that the market priced itself to death beginning in the

debating about buying it, I kept pondering why we like this stuff so much. I love brown furniture and have collected it for years (and for new readers, brown furniture is defined as the hardwood formal furniture of the 17th to 19th centuries). But, even I like some of the modern designs. The reason for me, as I think it is for many, is that this was furniture we grew up seeing. There is a truism in the antiques world that what a generation collects is a reflection of what their grandparents owned. It is that sense of comfort and grandma’s house that drives us to love what was there and to want to own it. As a late boomer early Gen Xer, it was the early 20th-century furniture that became what we associated with our grandparents. To me, it is the massive

1980s and now is finding what the original true market is. Second is that young collectors are attracted to their grandparents’ generation, which is now the 1960-1980 period. Third is that in a world where families began splintering geographically in the 1960s, a knowledge of what grandma owned is not as strong as it once was. I look at my own kids, whose grandparents are hundreds of miles away in Pennsylvania. They have memories of their homes, but they are more fractious than mine were in living with my grandparents as a child. So, it is a case where I think that the memories are more scattered than for prior generations. What this leads me to believe is that I think the correction in the market is both normal and healthy. I don’t think brown furniture will come back for a long time, but

to take the plunge and buy the business. They settled on the property in 2011 and brought the collection of dealers along with them. The one-story barn sits in a hollow on Silverside Road in north Wilmington, making it appear smaller than it really is from the outside. The most frequent comment the Donahues hear from new customers is, “I had no idea this place was this big!” There are various personalities to every room in the shop, and the quality of the merchandise is kept high. The pricing is attractive, with fun little finds at $1 or less to highly collectible 1960s furniture. One large room holds the JAM record store, which stocks a huge amount of vintage vinyl records and music collectibles and has its own loyal clientele. But there are also areas brimming with toys, folk art, military antiques, repurposed vintage items, books, glass, paper collectibles and gently used fashions. In short, just about everything. The Zeppelin and the Unicorn has been voted “Best Antiques Store in Delaware” three times—2015, 2017 and 2019—by the readers of Delaware Today magazine, an honor the Donahues do not take lightly. They offer free appraisal nights about four times a year, when anyone can bring in an item they’ve been wondering about and get a history and approximate market value from appraiser Bob Lucas. There are Ladies Night events with cocktails, as well as Halloween and Christmas sales that bring out the decorations and pile on the savings for customers. If a customer doesn’t find what they’re looking for, they are referred to other antique stores in the region. Jacqui and Larry are frequent visitors to surrounding shops and malls, and they know where to find items they don’t have at

the Zeppelin and Unicorn. And young visitors also enjoy the shop. In stark contrast to antique malls where children are regarded with suspicion, the Zeppelin and the Unicorn offers free candy at the front counter, and young guests can pick a free toy from a box when they leave. “Kids are our future customers,” stated Jacqui. “We want to make families comfortable when they come here.” Having built longtime relationships with all their dealers, the shop doesn’t have to advertise for new vendors. The shop is open every day except Tuesday, with either Jacqui or Larry behind the counter at all times. The couple lives only a block away from the store, which is convenient but also means that they never really get away from work. “We haven’t had a vacation since we bought the place,” said Larry, smiling. He listed “taking a vacation” as one of his goals for the future, and Jacqui added that she’d like to increase the social media presence of the shop. But for the most part, the Zeppelin and the Unicorn has built its reputation on a welcoming atmosphere, a diverse selection of items ranging from funky to functional, and a genuine willingness to help customers find just what they’re looking for. “We really use both word of mouth and Antiques & Auction News,” said Jacqui. “That’s how we have gotten our dealers, and that’s how a lot of people find out about us. People come in, love what they see, and tell their friends. People walk out and say, ‘This is my new favorite shop.’” The Zeppelin and the Unicorn Antiques is at 400 Silverside Road, Wilmington, Del. Milestone’s Selection Of Winchesters And Colts Draws Enthusiastic Bidders To Premier Firearms Auction Near-Mint, Unissued Whitney Model 1861 U.S. Navy Rifle Realizes $6,000 seemed to us that very few collectors, if any, left the auction disappointed.” Leading the list of prices realized was a near-mint unissued Whitney Model 1861 U.S. Navy rifle. The .69-caliber gun featuring a large eagle-andflag motif on its lock and “1863” on its barrel came with a bayonet made by Collins & Co., of Hartford, Conn. Milestone Auctions continues to increase its bidder base and market share, as evidenced most recently by their successful Premier Firearms sale on Nov. 2. There was strong international interest in the 830 lots of high-quality modern-era handguns and long arms, as well as bigcaliber and antique guns and rifles, many from the Civil War era. “There wasn’t any one particular ‘top gun’ in this auction, there were highlights in all of the various categories,” said Milestone Auctions co-owner Chris Sammet. “For this event, we focused on accessibility and offered as wide a variety of clean, desirable firearms as possible. There were some great Colt models and the largest selection of Winchesters ever cataloged in a single Milestone sale. It

Bertoia’s Auction Of Tony Annese Toy, Train And Christmas Collection Totals $1.8 Million Intense Interest From Collectors And Museums Worldwide Drove Prices For Marklin Productions Well Past High Estimates $72,000 and was soon en route to its German homeland. Likewise, a Marklin Limited Vestibule Express set was purchased by a European museum for $45,600, more than twice the high estimate, while a beautiful Marklin Versailles “Café” train station estimated at $15,000-$25,000 was bid to $31,200. The buyer in the room was an agent acting on behalf of a collector in Europe. A boxed Marklin American Eagle set, which was Tony Annese’s favorite train, sold in the room for an above-estimate $52,800, and an appealing Schlitz Beer car was claimed by an American collector for $31,200. “He commented that he had been trying for years to buy an example of the Schlitz car at auction but had always been a contender. This time he vowed he wasn’t going to miss out, and

Among the other Marklin highlights were a Heitzwagen (Heating Car), $28,800 to a U.S. buyer; a Steeple Cabin Engine, $20,400 (est. $8,000-$12,000) to a phone bidder; and a Train Delay Indicator Board, $10,800 (est. $4,000-$6,000) to an internet bidder. There are thousands of collectors of Christmas

antiques worldwide, and based on the bidding volume attracted by the fabulous array of Santas, sleighs and nodders, it seemed most of them had heard about the sale. The top Christmas lot was an unusual design that paired a nodding Santa rider with a nodding donkey. Estimated at $7,000-$10,000, it reached a heady $26,400. An early nodding Santa with a beautiful face, fur beard and feather tree, which Tony Annese had bought at a Bertoia’s sale in the early 1990s, was one of several Christmas pieces that had been displayed in Bertoia’s booth at the Golden Glow of Christmas Past convention. “Over 800 people attended the event, and many of them gravitated toward our showcase and to that piece in particular.” Estimated at This veggie people skittles set comprising cabbage-form container and nine $3,000-$5,000, it sold to a bidder-agent in the room for skittles, painted composition, sold for $8,500. $19,200. Hours before Bertoia Auctions’ president and auctioneer Michael Bertoia announced the first lot at the company’s Oct. 11 sale of the Tony Annese collection, there were strong indications that an exceptional day of selling lay ahead. With a standingroom-only crowd, phone lines booked for the entire session, and two internet platforms bustling with bidders, it was clear that antique toy collectors worldwide were ready to play. As a result of the unrelenting competition, the 650lot sale ran two hours longer than anticipated, and its final tally was nearly $1.8 million. “It turned out to be a significant event that reminded us of the excitement that surrounded the Donald Kaufman auction series (2009-2011). Many bidders flew in from Europe to preview the toys, and major European museums bid on both the Christmas antiques and Marklin trains,” said Bertoia Auctions cofounder Jeanne Bertoia. “We advertised heavily in the European market and contacted many bidders personally. I don’t know of any advanced Marklin train collector who did not participate in the sale.” The additional promotional efforts paid off with prices that consistently exceeded estimates. tiered Christmas village and candle house with reflective back-lighting of all the buildings’ windows, $5,700 (est. $600-$900). Leading the paper-onwood toys was a jaunty carved and polychrome-painted carousel elephant platform toy, which sold near the top of its estimate range at $28,800.
