Soap Hollow Small-Size Cupboard Sells at Forsythes’ By Susan Emerson Nutter Soap Hollow. It’s a name in the field of painted decorated antique furniture that can cause a lot of interest. Forsythes’ Auctions LLC, of Russellville, Ohio, hosted an antiques auction on Nov. 4 that included a wonderful example of this highly desirable genre, and its selling lived up to its hype. So what is Soap Hollow furniture? As referenced by Antiques and Auction News editor, p4A contributing editor, and Maine Antique Digest freelance writer Karl Pass, “Soap Hollow furniture was produced roughly from 1830 to 1890 in Somerset County, Pa. The name was reportedly coined from the brown soft soap produced throughout the region, which lies in a hollow. Among the known makers are John Sala, Christian Blauch, Peter Thomas and Jeremiah Stahl. All produced furniture with similar design, construction and decoration. The majority was paint-decorated and incorporated cut-paper stencil decoration. The stencil decoration was often done in gilt and included floral and geometric design work. Many Soap Hollow chests possess the initials of the individual it was made for on the front left and the date to the right. This information is often placed on the sides of chest of drawers.” “The primary form was the chest and chest of drawers, although sewing boxes, cradles, rope beds, Dutch cupboards, hanging cupboards and a tall-case clock are known to exist. Poster lovers from far and wide came to Swann Auction Galleries on Oct. 25 for a sale of rare and important travel posters, setting eight records with bidding both in the room and on the phones. The top lots of the sale were Emil Cardinaux’s snowy image for a winter getaway in St. Moritz and Philip Zec’s “By Night Philip Zec’s $17,500. poster for travel to Scotland by night train, each reaching $17,500. Numerous records were realized in the sale for both artists and individual works. W. Smithson Broadhead’s “Sea Breezes and Sunshine at Lytham St. Annes,” circa 1930, set a record for the artist, selling for $8,125. Further records for sporting and leisure posters included the circa 1925 “Gleneagles / The Tennis Girl” by

Muller in his book, “Soap Hollow: The Furniture and its Makers” (Canal Press, 2002) pages 19 and 27. When contacted about this Soap Hollow cupboard, Muller replied, “I went to look at the cupboard, and it’s very nice at five feet tall and 23 inches on the sides. In this day when houses do not have corners made for traditionally large corner cupboards, this one would fit anywhere. Condition is excellent. The door is square pinned, and the drawer is dovetailed with wedges. The surface is fine but dark, and the stenciled decoration is okay but, again, not bright. There is no date or initials or any identifying marks, and it came from a local house whose family had moved from Pennsylvania.” Muller then predicted, “I would look for it to bring $20,000 to $25,000 and expect the same person who bought the small Soap Hollow chest A bid of $1,600 was needed to win this circa of drawers at Garth’s 1830, three-section Philadelphia mahogany Auctions last fall to possibly purchase this bookcase.

in both Germanic and Neoclassical traditions.” The example sold by Forsythes’ was a youth size (60-inches high) corner cupboard attributed to John Sala. Having the signature dark red grain-painted ground with various floral and star/geometric stencils on the frame of the cupboard, the black cove molding top also had stenciled floral returns over a single black door, again with stencils on the frame and four panes of glass. Other attributes of this piece included a brass lock and two shelves over a cutout pie shelf, over a single overlapping dovetailed drawer in black paint with a brass pull. A single panel door with a black panel having floral stencils and a brass lock completed the body of the cupboard, which sat on scroll cutout feet. Twenty-five stencils total made up the decorative work on the piece, which again was attributed to John Sala based on the same paint scheme and color used by him on a signed

The holidays remain one of those consummate occasions when almost everyone becomes old-fashioned in one way or another. What I mean by that is that even the most current forward-facing of people will get caught in a time warp of cherished movies, favorite decorations, and customs old and new. It is when we all return to those roots (real or perceived) for our families and ourselves. In thinking about Christmas, in particular, this is a time when your collections can be showcased to their fullest. It is when your teaberry china can make an appearance. It is when the toy trains can appear under the tree. This is the time to put the quilts and the coverlets out or even to think about a party called Deco the Halls, which showcases your jewelry or clothing collection. It is when a plate full of cookies delivered on a piece of flow blue or fiesta can be both spectacular and inspire future collectors. For me, the holidays are a
me, it is about the special qualities of the holidays, that time when we can reflect upon the past and hope for the future. This year, with us moving, it will be a challenge to find everything. In the last couple of Christmases, we have decorated three trees in the house. One is an artificial tabletop tree with a large collection of glass clip-on birds that we have found antiquing over the years. The second tree is usually a large white pine with white lights that is decorated with the old ornaments. My friend Jim Morrison, at the now sadly closed National Christmas Center in Lancaster, taught me about dating ornaments and so we have filled this tree with treasured

time that takes me back to my own childhood when we lived with my grandparents. Both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners were occasions for the silver, china, linens and decorations to be out. Roast beef on Christmas Eve and turkey the next day, both carved with great aplomb (excluding the year when the cord on the electric carving knife was cut). Today, our daughters have grown up with similar traditions in the house. The holidays are a return to that holdover Edwardian world of dressing for dinner and the use of silver and china. I have colleagues my own age who bristle at this and revel in their lasagna on paper plates for Christmas dinner. To each his own. For

The iconic device, based on an idea from the films’ cowriter and star Dan Aykroyd, may not have trapped any

Hake’s Auction Continued from page 4
Noonan portrait coattail button, perhaps the only surviving example, was bid to $12,980. A rare and important “Vote Kennedy Congress button from JFK’s first political campaign, one of fewer than 10 examples known to Hake’s, made $10,384. In July, Hake’s auctioned one of the most significant pieces of international baseball history, a 1913 All Nations team photo postcard. In their November sale, they followed up with one of the most important team photographs of the pre-Integration era in American history. The photo depicted the 1935 Bismarck, N.D., semi-pro baseball team, whose lineup included
African-American Hall of Famers Satchel Paige and Hilton Smith. Against a $5,000$10,000 estimate, the historical photo knocked it out of the park, selling for $23,364. Interest in Baranger motion displays has never declined and, in fact, has only grown thanks to an increased international following, especially in Asia. These amusing, mechanically animated tableaux were manufactured for retail jewelry stores by the Baranger Co., of South Pasadena, Calif., from 1925 to 1959. Their purpose was to attract the attention of potential customers walking past the stores’ windows. Approximately 167 designs were created, with 30 of each design seeing production. The example in the auction depicted a

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates’ Three-Day Americana And 19th-Century Glass Auction Generates Strong Results Virginia Paint-Decorated Chest Sells For $24,570 To The Wythe County Historical Society The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction held Nov. 8, 9, and 10 was a highly successful event and produced robust prices, along with a few surprises, in multiple categories. The three-day format consisted of 2,001 lots of high-quality material, much of which was fresh to the market and, in several cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. Bidding was intense throughout each day, with thousands of registered bidders from numerous countries participating in-house and online. Sessions I and II on Nov. 8 and 9 were devoted exclusively to the dispersal of the 19thcentury American glass and lighting collection of the late Alvina Breckel of Oley, Pa., and Winnetka, Ill. A fine assemblage of cup plates, lacy period salts, and children’s toys, the Breckel collection, for which two special color printed catalogues were created, generated significant pre-sale interest and produced strong prices, along with a few surprises, over the course of two days. The top lot was a Henry Clay pressed open salt in a unique slate blue color. Likely made at the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company, but possibly Midwestern, the rare vessel shattered its estimate range when two determined private collectors on the phones chased it all the way to
$22,230. Prices reported include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. Other noteworthy results from the first two days included a rare wagon form pressed open salt in unique medium blue color selling for $17,550; the pedigreed “Parker White” cup plate, an icon of early American pressed glass, at $14,040; and a highly-coveted “Washington” colorless cup plate, $14,040. Session III on Nov. 10 consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of Americana and fine antiques, highlighted by an important Virginia private collection that included a number of examples of Southern folk pottery and paint-decorated furniture. Several institutional deaccessions were also featured, including a collection of long rifles and accoutrements from the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV), a group of quilts and fraktur from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), and a large assortment of 18th-and 19th-century English Staffordshire ceramic figures from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Top lot for the day at $24,570 was an important Wythe County, Va., paintdecorated poplar blanket chest, signed and dated by its maker, Johannes Hudel (John Huddle). A key example in this well-documented group of backcountry chests, the highly-coveted object drew much

Other noteworthy results include a recently discovered pair of North Carolina folk portraits by the Guilford Limner at $11,700; a fine Great Road decorated earthenware jar at $11,700; and a William Aiken Walker Southern genre scene depicting two cotton pickers at $10,530. Furniture offerings also produced strong results overall, demonstrating some signs of vigor in what is an unpredictable segment of the market. Top performers in this category of the sale were a Philadelphia carved and figured walnut high chest at $8,190; a rare Mecklenburg County, Va., walnut semi-high
chest of drawers at $8,190; an unusual Baltimore, Md., classical mahogany games or work table at $7,020; and a diminutive 18th-century Virginia walnut desk at $6,435. “We were very pleased with the strong interest across the board in this auction. It was an honor to handle the Breckel glass collection and produce color catalogues for both sessions. The collection sold without reserve, so the results are a true indication of the current 19th-century American glass market. Several pieces sold for more than five times their original pre-recession purchase price, and it was encouraging to see all lots receive many bids. The lighting section of the collection performed extremely well, demonstrating the continued strength and interest

“Luigi Valadier: Splendor In Eighteenth-Century Rome” On View At The Frick Collection Exhibition Follows Acclaimed Show On Pierre Gouthière This fall, The Frick is presenting the first monographic exhibition devoted to one of the important figures of 18thcentury Italian decorative arts, Luigi Valadier (1726–85). He was a talented draftsman, designer, goldsmith, silversmith, and bronze founder, using precious stones as well as enamel, wood, and glass to create whimsical and elegant works of art for noble clients. The exhibition is curated by Alvar González-Palacios, who has dedicated most of his life to scholarship on the artist
and is considered his foremost expert. “Luigi Valadier: Splendor in Eighteenth-Century Rome” will highlight Valadier’s oeuvre, presenting more than 50 objects as well as drawings that represent the breadth of his career. Never before has an American museum audience been able to view together so many examples of his production, with significant loans coming from public institutions as well as private collections in Europe and the United States. Likewise, the
accompanying book is the first substantial monograph published on Valadier, and with the show, it will provide a vivid and unprecedented account of this man’s work. The exhibition will be on view until Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019.
As with The Frick’s highly acclaimed 2016 exhibition on Pierre Gouthière, this project will allow the broader public to enjoy a much-needed study of a significant figure in the decorative arts whose imagination and skills made him one of the
soaring figures in his time. In this case, the subject is Roman rather than Parisian, and the exhibition and book add dimension to a strong year of Italian programming at The Frick, which began this summer with an exhibition related to a commission by sculptor Antonio Canova and will
continue this winter and spring with shows on painters Giovanni Battista Moroni and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The Frick Collection is located in Henry Clay Frick’s house at 1 E. 70th St., at the northeast corner of Fifth Ave., in New York City. To learn more, visit www.frick.org.

Scott Atlanta Market Fills Two Halls With 2,500 Exhibitor Booths October Show Starts Fall Season With Thousands Of Shoppers In Four-Day Event Scott Antique Market continues to fill the Atlanta Expo Centers each month with over 2,500 booths of antiques, fine art and home décor. Founder Don Scott was again pleased with the four-day show, which ran Oct. 11 to 14. “We work all the time continuing to look at new ways to help the dealers get more business and build more interest with the shoppers,” he stated. “Now with an earlier entry for the setup, we are getting ready even faster on Thursday morning, and that makes our shopping even more exciting for the dealers, who have more time to prepare their displays,” according to Scott. As shoppers rolled in on opening day, they seemed to appreciate the better prepared exhibits. Easter Hill Antiques of Sharon, Conn., for example was quickly the beneficiary of these results with a couple that arrived at the opening with the goal to furnish their Charleston, S.C., home with furniture. Their first purchase was an antique burl walnut pedestal stand, and they also acquired a gentleman’s chair, sometimes called a corner chair, with an early rush seat. That dealer later in the weekend also sold a high-end Persian Tabriz rug, several quilts, and a primitive pine chest found in Virginia. This South Carolina couple continued their quest that morning, buying a period drop-leaf table. Kemp Hickey is an Atlanta, Ga., dealer specializing in an eclectic mix that has proven popular with the Scott Antique Market shoppers. This weekend, his booth included several Biedermeier pieces, including a four-drawer chest in walnut with marble top, two tall case clocks, and an assortment of iron tables with glass tops. He also had a large
collection of art from the turn of the 20th century. Alderman Ford Antiques and Jewelry of Columbia, S.C., made their weekend with sales of silver hollow ware. Margaret Alderman-Ford also sold a reasonable amount of jewelry. New to the show was Kimberly Moore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with the later modern styles. Her booth included material from both American and European designers. Her sales included a Danish Mid-Century Modern dining set in mahogany with chairs, as well as an English desk and a good deal of fine art. Cwalton Art of Atlanta, Ga., featured their rather funky, offbeat art, three-dimensional reproductions of lions and tigers and bears, and some others too. There were cows behind windows, giraffes sitting in fields and a few other novel pieces, all rather humorous. Father and son team Jerry and Will Dehner trade in sports memorabilia at the show and from their home in Roswell, Ga. Jerry pointed out that many of the men were buying while their wives were shopping for home furnishings, but also many wives were buying Christmas presents. Atlanta, Ga., dealer Kay Mauriocourt reported excellent sales, noting shoppers were getting ready for the holiday season and gift giving. She has done the show for nearly 30 years and specializes in silver. She sold coffee and tea services, candle holders, and decanters. Mount Castle Antiques, of both Atlanta, Ga., and East Hampton, N.Y., sold benches found in a restaurant in Florida made of wainscoting and painted in a variety of colors along with other campy items from the collections. Todd Harper, Athens, Ga., was selling well too with furniture going to new homes. His

Daum Nancy Cameo Glass Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos Among the finest French cameo glass to grace collectors’ shelves are Daum Nancy pieces. Daum glass had a rather serendipitous start; Jean Daum, a notary and financier, took over an existing company in 1878 before it went under financially, some say as payment for his services. Daum Nancy’s longevity is a tribute to their changing designs through attention to each generation’s tastes and trends. Daum Nancy glassware still endures today and is being produced under the name Cristallerie Daum. Depending on the time period of manufacture, Daum glass pieces can look very different from each other. In its earliest years, Jean Daum
continued producing the utilitarian glassware and watch crystals already being made by the company of which he took ownership. By the 1890s, manufacturing was taken over by Jean Daum’s sons, Antonin and Auguste, who began experimenting with art glass. They debuted their cameo glass pieces at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. It is believed by some that the Daum brothers’ designs were influenced by Emile Galle, which is why some Daum pieces are easily mistaken for Galle. Following Daum’s Art Nouveau period came their post-WWI Art Deco style. This period also marked a shift from handcrafted glassware to mass-produced pieces. This is also the period of time when Daum began producing pâtede-verre, where crushed or

That said, forgers have gotten quite good at duplicating marks, so unless the mark is obviously wrong, more aspects of the piece need to be evaluated. Some fake Daum marks are painted on or etched into unmarked glassware that the faker then tries to pass off as Daum Nancy pieces. If the quality, color or style of the mark itself isn’t an instant giveaway, an assessment of the piece itself will be. The shape may not be one that was ever created by Daum, the thickness of the glass may be wrong, the subject matter may be inconsistent with Daum pieces, or the overall artistic quality may be poor. Space Memorabilia Auction Featuring The Neil Armstrong Collection Blasts Past $7.4 Million Armstrong Family Collection Alone Soars To More Than $5.2 Million A space memorabilia auction featuring the Neil Armstrong Family Collection realized more than $7.4 million on Nov. 3 at Heritage Auctions. Armstrong’s personally owned memorabilia, spanning from a childhood letter to the Easter Bunny to the Apollo 11 ID plate from the module he used to become the first person to walk on the moon, sold for $5.2 million total. The sale is the first of three auctions scheduled through 2019 of the legendary astronaut’s lifelong collection. “Thank you to the enthusiasts out there, the supporters of NASA, the lovers of science and the dreamers of impossible dreams,” stated son Mark Armstrong. “Thank you for your unwavering support of space exploration. It’s my hope that you continue to do what you do to boldly propel us forward into the future.” The Armstrong Family Collection is an extraordinary archive, chronicling the life and career of one of the most historic figures of the 20th century through the lens of the objects he loved, collected, and preserved for decades. Much of the Apollo 11 Mission Commander’s collection had

Armstrong’s personal Spacecraft ID plate from Apollo 11’s Lunar Module Eagle, flown on the first manned lunar landing, July 16-24, 1969, sold for $468,500. The largest size American flag, which Armstrong kept as a treasured Apollo 11 souvenir, sold for $275,000. Two evocative relics commemorating mankind’s command of the air, a piece of the propeller and section of the wing fabric from Orville and Wilbur Wright’s invention of the first successful airplane, sold for $275,000 each. The relics from the Wright Brothers’ historic flight were carried to the moon just 66 years later when Armstrong made his footprint on the lunar surface. To preserve and document the collection’s authenticity and provenance for generations to come, the Armstrong family and Heritage collaborated with Collectibles Authentication Guaranty (CAG) to accurately attribute and certify every item.
“CAG did a wonderful job expertly describing and, when appropriate, grading and encapsulating the Armstrong Family Collection items,” said Michael Riley, director of Space Memorabilia at Heritage Auctions. “CAG’s certification made it far easier for us to auction the collection and likewise for our clients to evaluate and bid on it.” Armstrong’s light blue owned and worn Gemini flight suit, a rare surviving memento of his legendary work on the Project Gemini program, soared to $109,375, more than five times its $20,000 preauction estimate. “Working with the family to share objects near and dear to Neil Armstrong with his fans and space memorabilia collectors is a shining point in the history of Heritage,” said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions. “We are excited for the spring, when we have the pleasure of bringing more never-before-seen artifacts and private mementos to the world.” Heritage Auctions’ presentation of the Neil Armstrong Family Collection Part II is scheduled for May 9 and 10, 2019, with a third and final A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts, sale set for November 2019. cameo glass with multiple colors achieves these colors by applying two layers of colored glass over a thicker, solid-colored glass body. However, colored areas on reproductions and fakes are created by starting with a clear glass body, which is far cheaper than colored glass, and applying one very thin layer of color outside and another thin layer inside. This cost-cutting method can sometimes be discovered by holding the piece up to a light and looking very closely for tiny breaks in the color, where the clear glass shows through. Two other telltale signs are color streaking or colored glass pieces suspended inside the glass body, since Daum melted glass pieces and fused them together to form the body, so you wouldn’t see individual forms. Again, it’s important to check with experts or good references as to whether particular Daum pieces were done with solidcolored bodies, with mottling, or in some other fashion.
The interior of a piece can also help to illustrate the difference between authentic cameo glass and modern fakes or repros. Old French cameo glass interiors are smooth and even, but many repros have depressions where the pattern images (flowers, for example) appear. If you run your hand or just a finger inside the piece, you’ll be able to feel it dip down into the pattern of these new pieces, whereas there will be no change on the inside of an authentic piece of cameo glass. These pattern depressions may also feel a bit rough due to the effects of a grinding wheel (which is also what causes the occasional loss of color when the grinding goes too deep). These are some very basic, general guidelines that can start you on your way to identifying authentic Daum Nancy glassware, but with over 100 years of Daum glassware having been and still being produced, there are many other types of authentic art glass and their reproduction counterparts to become educated about. Photo via Wikimedia Commons by Maksim. At A Glance Signs of a reproduction or fake: 1. Poor artistic quality 2. Incorrect glass thickness 3. Internal indentations under pattern 4. Prominent maker’s mark 5. Letters of different stylings within the same mark Reference books, websites and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes.
