An 18th-Century Yuletide At Rock Ford Plantation

FRIDAY DECEMBER 15, 2017 • VOL. 48, NO. 50

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Hosts Successful Two-Day Americana And Fine Antiques Sale Pair Of American School Mason Family Folk Art Miniature Portraits Sells For $64,350

This pair of American School Mason family folk art miniature portraits sold to a private collector in New York City for $64,350. The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction held Nov. 10 and 11 was a successful event and generated strong prices in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,167 lots of high-quality material, much of which was fresh to the market, and, in several cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. Bidding was intense throughout each day, with strong institutional interest and over 3,000 registered bidders participating in-house and online. Session one started the weekend off with a bang. The 299-lot offering featured a selection of high-grade coins and currency, antiquarian maps, books, and manuscripts, as well as early American firearms and accessories. The select grouping offered in the Friday session generated significant presale interest and produced strong results. The top lot was a Didier Robert de Vaugondy Atlas Universal, published in 1757 and nearly complete, which garnered $11,115. All prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. Other noteworthy results from this session

included a Thomas Jefferson signed 1781 Rockingham Co., Va., land grant at $4,095; a Patrick Henry signed letter, $3,159; and a New Market, Shenandoah Co., Va., Henkel family manuscript archive, selling for $4,387. The Henkel family material went to a Shenandoah Valley institution interested in augmenting its manuscript holdings. Session two consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of Americana and fine antiques. Several categories demonstrated signs of vigor in what can be an unpredictable market. Several surprises were in order, most notably a fine pair of American School folk art miniature portraits of a mother and daughter with their pets, one a gray cat and the other a white dove. Discovered in Western Pennsylvania, the sitters are believed to be members of the Mason family of Ohio and New York. Mary Jane Mason, the daughter, would go on to work as a de facto editor for Samuel Langhorne Clemens during the author’s famous journey to Europe and the Holy Land on board the Quaker City. AAN Current News Volunteer Pamela Stoner presents the Twelfth Night Cake in the Rock Ford dining room during annual Yuletide tours. Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a remedy for the postChristmas blues by offering a journey back in time to when Christmas day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18th-century Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when Gen. Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas day was only the beginning of a festive season of 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about 18th-century traditions, enjoy watching period dancing by a volunteer dance group (candlelight tours only), listen to traditional holiday music by the musical group Seasons from Harrisburg, and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will also be stationed in various rooms of the

mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. Candlelight tours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Dec. 26, 27, and 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. Daylight tours are Friday, Dec. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission will be $10 for adults and $8 for seniors 65 and over and children ages 6 to 12. Children age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge. All proceeds from this event support the educational programs and operations of Rock Ford Plantation, located in Lancaster, Pa. Built in 1794, Rock Ford was the home of Edward Hand and his family. Hand served as adjutant general to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The historic property is open for tours each Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., from April to October. It is operated by the nonprofit Rock Ford Foundation. Other noteworthy results from the Saturday session include an impressive Native American stone point/blade from the Wallace Gusler collection, ex. Our in-house crowd was strong resulting in over 170 bid numbers being issued to real bodies, and we saw a large percentage of items walk out the door on sale day! The overall excitement and strong sales results reflect the freshness and high quality of the merchandise offered. In addition, the auction was 98 percent unreserved, so the results are a true and honest gauge of

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT

The season is upon us, and we are all looking for holiday gifts. To me, this is a great time to think about starting someone on a collection. There are so many wonderful collecting opportunities out there and the holidays are a great time to start a collector or give a special gift. Children’s books from 1880 to 1950 remain a huge bargain in the marketplace. The trick is to find pieces with great illustrations, high quality printing, and in good condition. The

because there is such a mystique about condition and quality. I get furious because this silly focus by investment collectors has killed a wonderful hobby. If you want a great gift for a child, then go and buy a vintage train. New train track and a transformer can be purchased easily and you have the ability to introduce a child to the fun of toy trains. For the man in your life, I heartily recommend vintage watches. This past year, I have begun to collect and wear vintage watches. Working in Lancaster, I developed a taste for vintage Hamilton watches. I have found them in a variety of sources, and in many cases ready to wear after a new band and perhaps a cleaning. They are cool, retro and a wonderful gift for the man Peter Seibert, a native who thinks he has everything. Pennsylvanian, grew up in the And vintage and antique antiques business and

antique shops are filled with ratty volumes that are scribbled in. Let them be! Seek out the books (illustrated examples by the Wyeths are always great choices) of quality and give them as special holiday gifts for both young and old. I remember many years ago, the Harrisburg antique dealer Elsie Doehne told me that pattern glass and china were doomed because of the advent of the dishwasher. I am not sure if this analogy is true, but it’s clear that there are wonderful bargains in early china and glassware. Over the weekend, I could have purchased a shelf full of Victorian transferware plates priced anywhere from $5 to $25. That is a wonderful house-warming gift for sure. Of course, I always have to celebrate toy trains. Collectors get scared of toy trains

jewelry remains a wonderful gift for the lady in your life. Whether a piece of Mexican silver from the 1950s, or a piece of paste jewelry from the Georgian period, these vintage and antique pieces are wonderful gifts for the holidays. Finally, as we see so many households being broken up, I think purchasing antique and vintage Christmas ornaments is a wonderful holiday tradition. We have purchased new and antique ornaments for our trees (note I use plural here), and they are a wonderful part of our family trees, keeping the light of Christmas alive. So in the spirit of giving, this is a wonderful time to both share antiques and start new traditions.

One of the real joys of the Holiday Season is the opportunity to say Thank You and to wish you the very best for the New Year Wehrly’s Auction Service, Inc.

A Brown’s Celebrated Indian Queen, a figural bitters that’s prevalent but popular, this one particularly nice in color, deeper than the usual lime green, sold for $14,375. during the rush. The auction featured five J. Boardman & Co. (N.Y.) sodas, “a ridiculous number to offer at one time and all five completely different shades of puce,” said Wichmann. “All sold for solid money averaging almost $5,000 each.” A standout J. Boardman lot was #176, a mineral water bottle in a grape juice color with just a hint of orange. Having a high condition grade of 8, it made $6,325. “Western sodas are at an all-time high, but the fact is all of the quality bottles in every category ended up selling for the maximum,” declared Wichmann. Western collectors don’t have the diversity or volume that eastern collectors enjoy, so it’s becoming apparent now that when a western bottle meets the color, condition and rarity criteria, they soar way beyond typical prices.” Western whiskey flasks made between 1870 and 1900 are considered desirable and are a part of any serious collector’s arsenal. A Jesse Moore & Co. whiskey flask (Moore Hunt & Co., Sole Agents), with loads of embossing, circa 187882, sold for $7,200. The bottle was one of perhaps 25 known, but one rarely comes up for bid because collectors like to keep them close to home. An early American blown flask from Louis Kossuth Calabash (S. Huffsey Calabash), embossed with the U.S. steam frigate Mississippi, powered its way to a new record price of $9,775. The bottle, brown

Rounding out just some of the auction’s top performers, an Eastern Cider Company olive green western soda bottle, made between 1877 and 1882, went to a determined bidder for $8,050, and a McKeever’s Army figural bitters, graded 9.6, with a drum and mound of cannonballs, hit $4,830. A Lafayette DeWitt Clinton half-pint lime green flask boasting embossed portraits and a condition grade of 8.8 out of 10 realized $10,925.

bitters bottle (“Brown’s Celebrated”), light to medium green in color, was the sale’s top lot, as eager bidders were not deterred by a condition issue at the mouth. “It was the highest price we’ve seen that bottle go for,” remarked Wichmann. The Lafayette flask, boasting embossed portraits and a condition grade of 8.8 out of 10, did gavel for a record price. “Typically our sales are top-heavy with Western bottles, but we also had some of the finest known examples in many other categories,” according to Wichmann. “With a little over 300 bidders, it was enough to set a record for us, selling 250 bottles. And although we had a lot of good stuff, we didn’t have that one monster bottle, so the gross was extraordinary.” “This sale didn’t feature any super lots expecting tens of thousands of dollars, but almost every lot with a quality bottle broke a previous record and then some. An Italian soda (Italian Soda Water Manufactory / S.F. Glassworks, Philadelphia) that normally sells in the $800 range finished at a staggering $6,325. It was one of the best looking examples we’d ever seen,” added Wichmann. The following are additional highlights from the auction, one in which 250 bottles sold for around $380,000. A total of 303 registered online bidders bid on 260 total lots. About 2,600 online bids were cast. A Dr. Wynkoop’s Sarsaparilla bottle that wasn’t particularly rare (one of about 20 known), but was a highly desired medicine and sarsaparilla category bottle, ended up fetching $7,150. Its early production, dating to the 1850s, combined with a beautiful blue color and crudity, made it one of the most popular bottles for collectors in that category. The bottle was graded well, at 8. A Wonser’s Indian Root Bitters in the aqua variant, the earliest made of the more prevalent amber examples, somewhat rare, one of maybe 10 known, changed hands for $9,775. The bottle had exceptional color going for it, a fiery blue aqua with good crudity. American Bottle has sold amber versions of this bottle, but never an aqua. Also, it was in near-perfect condition. An R&H Columbia western soda bottle, made especially for the Gold Rush town of Columbia, Calif., from 1852-56, topped out at $7,200. The bottle was one of only a half-dozen known and had an estimate of $7,000-$15,000. Columbia, previously known as Hildreth’s Diggings, was called “the gem of the Southern mines,” having produced a good bit of gold

A rare Indian Queen bitters bottle patented in 1868 sold for $14,375, and a Lafayette DeWitt Clinton halfpint lime green flask brought a record $10,925 in Auction #64, an internet and catalog auction that went online Oct. 13 and ended on Oct. 22 by American Bottle Auctions (www.americanbottle.com), based in Sacramento, Calif. The auction featured rare and vintage bottles from across the United States, to include Western and Eastern sodas, bitters, inkwells, whiskeys and more. “This auction had the largest and finest selection of Western soda bottles we’ve ever offered, with many rare one-of-a-kinds,” said Jeff Wichmann, owner of American Bottle Auctions. “It was led by the superb collection of Ken Salazar.” Of the 75 sodas from the Salazar collection, nearly 50 exceeded price estimates. “Together they brought in more than $80,000, which was a surprise to us and the consignor,” stated Wichmann. “Eastern sodas also did well. When the quality was there, so was the money.” Also offered were scarce bitters bottles from the East and West Coast, a large inkwell collection, and more. The Indian Queen herb

Rodin At The Brooklyn Museum: “The Body In Bronze” Exhibit Presents 58 Sculptures By Auguste Rodin On The Centenary Of The Artist’s Death

The Auguste Rodin (French, 18401917) cast by Fonderie de Coubertin, Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuses, France, Pierre de Wiessant, monumental nude (Pierre de Wiessant, nu monumental), 1886, cast 1983, is bronze, 78.25-by44.75-by-36.5-inches, from the Brooklyn Museum, gift of the B. traditional forms of portraiture and commemorative sculpture, but also to think about the various lenses through which his work has been interpreted.” About Auguste Rodin Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) occupies a pivotal position in the history of sculpture. Straddling two centuries, his work emerged from and continued to encompass the longstanding classical ideals of the French Academic tradition while at the same time leaving them behind in favor of extraordinary formal innovations. He strove for success within the established framework of government-sponsored exhibitions and commissions, yet refused to compromise his unconventional ideas about art. While Rodin often took allegorical, mythological, literary, or historical themes as his subjects, his portrayals marked a significant departure from his predecessors. Age, deformity, and accident were banished from the Academic canon of beauty, but Rodin embraced them, claiming that true artists transformed such aspects of life into eloquent affirmations of nature’s splendor. The implications of Rodin’s ideas have inspired significant experimentation by subsequent generations of modern sculptors. About Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Before B. Gerald Cantor’s death in 1996, he amassed more than 700 works by

Literature Auction Reaches Over $500,000 At Swann Galleries Works by Faulkner, Fleming, And Frank Lead Sale Swann Galleries’ auction of 19th- and 20th-century literature on Nov. 14 offered a veritable library of scarce first editions and inscriptions by authors from the last two centuries. More than two-thirds of the sale was devoted to 20thcentury literature, with a myriad of genres represented among the highlights. Topping the sale was the deluxe centenary limited-edition set of 18 volumes comprising the works of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Each tome is ensconced in a custom leather binding reflecting its contents. “Casino Royale” features playing cards, while “Octopussy” is adorned with undulating tentacles. The set, celebrating what would

have been Fleming’s 100th birthday, includes a selection of the author’s travel writings, previously unpublished stories, and a copy of “Chitty-ChittyBang-Bang.” One of 26 lettered sets published in London in 2008, the work reached $30,000, going to a private collector, tying the previous auction record. Works by William Faulkner performed well, selling 100 percent of the lots offered. An association copy of the first edition of his first book, “The Marble Faun,” 1924, signed and inscribed by Faulkner and his mentor, Phil Stone, to Dorothy Wilcox, was especially important because its inscription was specifically referenced in Joseph Blotner’s from:

fluid contours, animated surfaces, and emotional presence of these bronzes to emerge fully. Accompanying interpretive texts will place the works on view in their historical context, examine Rodin’s legacy and reputation, and explore his sculptural practice and the bronze casting process. The exhibition is curated by Lisa Small, senior curator of European Art. Rodin heralded a new era in sculpture, and he is represented here through each phase of his prolific career, including small and monumental works related to his bestknown commissions: “The Gates of Hell” (begun 1880), the “Monument to Balzac” (189198), and “The Burghers of Calais” (1884-95). Also featured are some of his sensitively rendered studies of hands, which attest to Rodin’s belief in the aesthetic integrity and independence of the fragment. The presentation also includes several ancient sculptural fragments from the museum’s collection that are similar to those that inspired Rodin and were collected and displayed in his home and studio. “The expressive human body, in whole and in part, was Rodin’s grand theme,” states Small. “We are fortunate that the museum’s collection allows us not only to explore his formal experimentation, his engagement with antiquity, and how he reimagined
