Snuggle Up Under A Jacquard Coverlet From Our Files By Andrew Richmond Joseph Marie Charles (1752-1834) never really bore the surname that has been applied to his loom. Rather, Jacquard was a nickname of sorts given to his family’s particular branch of all the Charleses in Lyon during the 18th century. Two factors drove the price on this coverlet: first, it’s green, a highly unusual color to appear by itself, and second, it was part of the collection of Lester and Barbara Breininger, noted Berks County, Pa., collectors. The coverlet was woven in 1844 by Henry Keener. Pook and Pook sold it for $1,896 in November of 2011.

The Hempfield Railroad pattern, perhaps the most desirable of American jacquard coverlets. Fifteen years ago, this pattern could bring more than $5,000. Despite the downturn in coverlets, however, Hempfield Railroads are still rare in any condition. The stains and holes on this example would, in any other pattern, likely cause this coverlet to be cut up and made into pillows. However, as a Hempfield, it still sold for a respectable $499 at Garth’s in May 2009.

Christie’s American Art auction in New York City on Nov. 22 totaled $36,728,000 and was 75 percent sold by lot and 83 percent sold by value. The top lot of the sale was Newell Convers Wyeth’s “Hands Up!” which set a world auction record for the artist and sold for $4,951,500 against a presale estimate of $1.5-2.5 million. The 43-by-30-inch oil-on-canvas was done in 1906. To learn more, visit www.christies.com. Image courtesy of Christies.

Seven Velázquez Portraits On View In Focused Exhibition At The Met Velázquez’s “Portraits of a Young Girl” (ca. 1640) and of “Cardinal Camillo AstalliPamphili” (ca. 1650), both from the collection of The Hispanic Society of America in New York City, were recently examined and treated at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The removal of extremely discolored varnish layers that had masked these paintings revealed Velázquez’s remarkable technique and subtle sense of color in ways that had not been seen in more than a century. These two works, along with five other exceptional portraits created in the final two decades of the artist’s career - including The Met’s iconic “Juan de Pareja” (1650) - are being presented in “Velázquez Portraits: Truth in Painting,” currently on view at the museum through Sunday, March 12, 2017. Although his formal state portraits of the leading figures of the Spanish monarchy are what established Velázquez (1599–1660) in his career, these bust-length likenesses he produced in Spain and during his travels in Italy are some of his most immediate and captivating images. Freed of the restrictions that apply to state and allegorical portraiture, Velázquez was able to capture in these paintings the temperaments, moods, and inner reflections of their subjects. In showing them roughly life-size and setting them against a neutral background, Velázquez invested his subjects with a timelessness that

By raising warp threads in different orders and by changing out the colored threads in the weft, a weaver can create a wide variety of textures, patterns, colors and even designs, but the process is slow and complicated. Jacquard’s loom, which used punched cards with rows for each row of the design that

were then strung together in order, aimed to expedite the process and eliminated common errors, building on the work of more than 70 years of contributions from other French weavers, none of whom had been able to create systems that would execute textiles complex enough to justify the expense and the learning curve. Weavers would frequently sign and/or date the corner blocks, and these coverlets tend to be more desirable, as are the rarer patterns with railroad or steamboat imagery (as opposed to the much more common flower or bird motifs). Values for coverlets have softened over the past decade. Textiles always require a different kind of commitment than many

antiques, as they cannot be regularly used, and coverlets in particular are difficult because they are woven, meaning they pick easily, and they are wool, so they collect dust and pet hair. Coverlets in rough condition can bring as little as $10-$25, while most fetch between $200-$500 at auction, although ones with rare designs or from areas with few documented examples can still get to $1,000$3,000 on the auction block.

Celebrating The 1980s With Christmas Display Haddon Heights Antiques Center To Offer Specials Through The Holidays Dennis Cosley began his weaving career in Xenia, Ohio, but later moved to Kentucky. His Kentucky-made coverlets are rare—this example, made at the end of the jacquard period, brought $360 at Cowan’s in July of 2013.

There were numerous coverlet weavers in Ohio. Benjamin Lichty worked in both Stark and Wayne County. He wove this red and white coverlet in 1844; the lower border includes the much sought-after steamboat motif. This coverlet sold at Garth’s Auctions in May of 2009 for just over $500.

For those who remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures or a Cabbage Patch doll underneath the Christmas tree, then by all means head on over to the Haddon Heights Antiques Center for a trip back in time to the Christmases of the 1980s. Throughout December, the special display will be filled with the toys, games, dolls, and characters of the 1980s. Sharing space in the case will be “Muppets” and “My Little Ponies,” “Alf,” the “California Raisins,” “Snorks,” and

“Smurfs.” Shoppers will also find vintage and nostalgic Christmas ornaments and decorations, not only in the dedicated display, but throughout the multi-dealer mall. Peter Swift Seibert The holiday season is soon upon us, and I turn to thoughts of decorating and parties and such. For most of us who are collectors, the holidays are a great chance for us to show off our collections. We polish and clean to show it all off for another season. I even have friends who use their holiday newsletter or Christmas card to showcase their latest purchases. For me, the holidays are also a wonderful chance to reconnect with traditional parties and dining. This is the chance for us all to have that Downton Abbey kind of moment. I like to offer a few ideas from my corner about how to showcase collections at the holidays in an elegant way.

Odd Plates I love flow blue and historic Staffordshire but am not that caring to assemble complete sets. But at the holidays, out come the various plates for use as serving plates at parties. They look elegant with cookies on them and are reasonable to find.

Earliest 10 Commandments Tablet Sells At Heritage Ancient Inscribed Stone Realizes $850,000 The world’s earliest-known stone inscription of the 10 Commandments – one of the most important documents in history and a “national treasure of Israel – sold for $850,000 on Nov. 16 at an auction of ancient Biblical archaeology artifacts by Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif. The two-foot-square slab of white marble, which weighs almost 115 pounds, is chiseled with 20 lines of letters in Samaritan script, derived jointly from Hebrew and Aramaic. The tablet likely adorned the entrance of a synagogue destroyed by the Romans between A.D. 400 and 600, or by the Crusaders in the 11th century, according to Heritage Auctions

director of Ancient Coins and Antiquities, David Michaels. The auction opened with a $300,000 bid, but two phone bidders pushed the selling price to $850,000. The winning bidder does not wish to be immediately identified at this time. Although considered a “national treasure of Israel, the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) approved export of the piece the United States in 2005 on the condition that it be displayed in a public museum, a condition that still remains, according to Michaels. “The sale of this tablet does not mean it will be hidden away from the public, said Michaels. “The new owner is under obligation to display the tablet for the benefit of the public. After an introductory dedication and invocation, the tablet lists nine of the 10 commonly known Biblical Commandments from the Book

of Exodus, omitting “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain (King James translation), and adding one commonly employed by the Samaritan sect exhorting worshippers to “raise up a temple on Mount Gerizim, the holy mountain of the Samaritans, located near the West Bank city of Nablus. Based on the letter forms chiseled into the tablet, scholars suspect the stone was probably carved in the late Roman or Byzantine era, circa A.D. 300-500, to adorn the entrance or worship space of a synagogue in or around the

Jeffrey S. Evans Conducts Successful Americana Auction Shenandoah Valley Of Virginia Show Towel Sells For $12,870 The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction held Nov. 12 was a successful event and generated strong prices in multiple categories. With material from over 120 consignors, the auction consisted of an especially large 1,091 lots. Offered was high quality material, much of which was fresh-to-the-market, and, in many cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. There was strong institutional interest in many lots, and over 3,000 registered bidders from nearly 50 countries participated. Leading the way in a robust folk art category, the sale’s top lot was an important Shenandoah Valley of Virginia folk art cutwork/scherenschnitte watercolor and ink-on-paper valentine, dated 1856, one of three valentines in the sale. Also doing well was an embroidered show towel made by Sarah Weaver (1839-1918) of Rockingham County, Va., which descended directly in the family of the maker. A rare and delicate form in very fine condition, the valentine brought $22,230 (Lot 260) from a Virginia dealer bidding on behalf of a client. All prices reported include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. A This 18th-century American pipe tomahawk sold for $9,360.

Gothic Fantasy: William Burges And Cardiff Castle By Amy Gale When the 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900) came of age in 1868, he took control of one of the largest fortunes in Great Britain. His estate included the docks of Cardiff, then an important seaport, and the town castle. Bute had plans for Cardiff

Castle, parts of which dated back to the 11th century. The place was, he acknowledged, “far from setting an example in art.” But he was confident that with vision and money and Bute had lots of money the rundown pile could be turned into a fashionable seat. He was not the first member of his family with such an ambition. One ancestor, a century earlier, had filled in the moat and modernized the living quarters. For Bute, however, a “modern” residence meant going back in time to the Middle Ages. He did not want to live in a real medieval castle, with damp walls, smoky hearths, and unglazed windows. But he was inspired by the art and legends of that period and wanted to incorporate them into a stylish and comfortable home. Bute had hired an architect while still in his late teens. His choice was William

Burges (1827-81), who at that time had completed few residential commissions. His professional reputation rested principally on his designs for Gothic Revival churches. This suited Bute, who was a man of strong religious feeling. Burges’ private reputation was another Bute’s bookish tastes are reflected in the sober décor of the library. matter. Sumptuous accommodations were built, although Lady Bute seems to have been less involved than her husband in the planning. She was, nonetheless, attached in a friendly way to the eccentric architect employed by her husband. While Lord Bute called Burges the “soulinspiring one,” his lady gave him a less reverent epithet. Gothic Fantasy Continued from page 12

“Isn’t he a duck,” she said. She participated in the decoration of the sitting room, which was based on the work of Geoffrey Chaucer. A statue of the 14th-century poet presides over the room, which has stained-glass windows and murals illustrating his most famous tales. The Nursery was another room with a literary theme. A frieze of painted tiles depicting characters from children’s classics dominates the cheerful room. The four Bute children spent their mornings in the nursery, which was staffed by a governess, nurse, and two nursery maids - one French and the other Welsh, who spoke to their charges only in their native languages. The Marquess of Bute was a bookish man. He dabbled in heraldry and local history and translated liturgical works from Latin. The Library reflects his erudite tastes. It is the least fanciful room, with a dark wood-beamed ceiling, metamorphic step-chairs, and big writing tables. In short, it has all the hallmarks of the Victorian book room. But there are the architect’s distinctive touches by the fireplace, traditionally the locus of his most flamboyant ideas. Statues illustrating the ancient languages are set in a row of Gothic niches over the mantel. The area is colorfully tiled, and there are two settees with carved tracery. Their placement near the hearth was perhaps an anachronism in a room with radiator heating.

A pious man, Bute was at home with religious art. On formal occasions, the family entertained in the Banqueting Hall. King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were among the many royal guests.

Castell Coch: The Other Castle. Cardiff Castle was not the only building Burges designed for the Marquess of Bute. Castell Coch, near Cardiff, was a medieval ruin on the Bute estate. The plan was to transform the old fortress into a country house. The restoration included portcullises, a drawbridge, and pointed French Gothic towers. Burges died before the interiors were finished, but his assistants carried out his plans, which rival in fantasy his work at Cardiff. His ambition “to indulge in a little more ornament” lives on at Castell Coch in the gilt domed ceilings and painted furniture.

Burges had eclectic tastes. Here in the Small Dining Room is a Gothic Revival chimneypiece and an Islamic-inspired ceiling. Bute had a reputation for piety, but not asceticism. Thanks to his industrial fortune, he was able to live out in comfort his fantasy of the Middle Ages. The bathrooms abound in luxury. The Clock Tower has a marble bath that Bute acquired in Rome. It was embellished by Burges, who had it inset with metal fish that shimmer under water.

Then there is the Small Dining Room, a vast, airy chamber that was used by the family on informal occasions. The chimneypiece is characteristically elaborate and contrasts with the sober wainscoting. Another highlight is the ceiling: the exotic Islamic motifs are brought out in red and gold. The small details also mark out the room as the

habitat of a rich man. Take the table, a simple model with a hole in the center. A fruiting potted vine was threaded through the hole, so that diners could nibble on fresh grapes. Cardiff Castle was a bright spot during the city’s dingy heyday. The Bute family spent, in fact, little time there - at most six weeks a year. They

divided the rest of their time between Scotland and London, when they were not traveling abroad. Their short visits were spent taking care of estate business and entertaining. On important occasions, like the dinner for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the family entertained their guests in the cavernous Banqueting Hall.

The castle was an important part of the family’s heritage until after World War II. For a quarter century, beginning in 1949, it was used as a music school. In recent years, it has been restored to its Victorian splendor.

The exhibit features 1916 campaign buttons, pennants and memorabilia from the Tony Atkiss collection and the collection of the Wilson House. The modern day complaints about primary fights, the importance of party unity, a bitterly divided party, the grueling length of campaigns and outsiders seeking nomination would have been familiar to the voter during the contentious election of 1916. More contentious than 2016? You decide.
