The auction’s top lot, “Journey Into Mystery #83” (Marvel, 1962), CGC NM 9.4 (white pages), was Thor’s first appearance and realized $191,200. Thanks to 14 lots that each drew a return of at least $100,000, the total sales at Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Auction held Nov. 16, 17, and 18 in Dallas, Texas, climbed to more than $8.75 million. “To have 14 books each realize more than $100,000 is extraordinary,” said Barry Sandoval, Heritage

Auctions Comics and Comic Art director of operations. “The performance of these lots shows that the demand is there for exceptional, high-end comics. Our bidders went after books of the highest quality and collectible value, and they got them.” Seventeen bidders made their pitch for the auction’s top lot, “Journey Into Mystery #83” (Marvel, 1962), CGC NM 9.4 (white pages), which was Thor’s first appearance. Heightened interest was perhaps fueled by the new film, “Thor: Ragnarok.” It realized $191,200. Considered the fourth-most valuable Silver Age Marvel comic, it is the second-highest grade of this issue ever offered through Heritage Auctions, thanks in part to its white pages. The origin and first appearance of Thor on the cover and in the interior were done by Jack Kirby; backup story art was done by Steve Ditko. Another lot that drew heavy bidder activity was “Detective Comics #33” (DC, 1939), CGC VF 8.0 (cream to off-white pages), which rose all the way to $167,300. Josh Gurley and his sister, Rachel Gurley Libby, are returning their Gurley Antiques Show brand to the Boston, Mass., suburbs with two shows this winter at the Boxborough Regency Hotel. The first will be on Sunday, Jan. 7, the second on Sunday, March 11. Another show will take place in November (date to be determined). “While we expect this to be a new show, with fresh ideas of what the antiques buyers are looking for today, we will continue with our emphasis on the Americana tradition,” explained Libby. She and her brother picked the site for their company’s successful history there and because the hall is big enough to hold over 60 dealers. Their reasoning is to tap into the vast Boston
metro market, within 45 minutes from this location, via I-495. Many dealers have already committed to these shows. Look for the hall to be filled with New England’s finest traditional Americana. The Gurley Boxborough Antiques Shows will be convenient for exhibitors, with same day set up, and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission will be $8. Free parking and good food service will be available at the hotel. For GPS directions, the Boxborough Regency Hotel is at 242 Adams Place, exit 28 off I-495 around Boston, Mass. To learn more, readers may call either Rachel at 207-396-4255 or Josh at 207-229-0403 or visit www.gurleyantiqueshows.com.

Those two categories accounted for more than half of the
Nov. 17 sale’s $596,000 total (including buyer’s premium). The top lot of the day was an extraordinary album containing photographs of Mormon elders, American Indians, Salt Lake City, stage stations, and more. The grouping was made up of approximately 130 CDVs and cabinet cards collected by the Bigland family of England while living in St. Louis and Ontario in the 1860s to 1890s and sold for $32,400. “The album provided a quintessential look at the American West in the late 1800s, but what really made this such a desirable piece of history was the rare look it provided at the early days of the Mormon church,” said Katie A French and Indian War manuscript Horstman, Cowan’s director of orderly book recorded by Capt. album contained rare topographical views of Salt Lake City as well as photographs of Mormon immigrants that we weren’t able to find records of anywhere else. It really was a stunning collection.” The American West was one of the preferred subject matters when it came to early photography. Other highlights included an album and archive documenting Rev. W.C. Roe’s mission to Fort Sill, featuring several photos of Geronimo and Quanah Parker, which sold for $16,800; a Carleton Watkins set of 32 Yosemite Valley photographs for $4,800; a quarter plate tintype of Jesse Gray, noted Indiana frontiersman, Indian fighter, and War of 1812 veteran for $4,500; and an Annie Oakley cabinet card by Wood for $4,500. Not surprisingly, Civil War
era photography was in high demand all day. The highlight of the group was a CDV album assembled by an abolitionist family that featured 110 images including slaves, views of Port Royal, S.C., and portraits of prominent abolitionists and Quakers. Identifications and content in the album point to the likelihood it was compiled during and soon after the Civil War by a member of the Parrish family, prominent Quakers in Philadelphia. The album sold for $19,200. “When I brought this album to the annual show of the Daguerreian Society, collectors were marveling over the unique subject matter of some of the photographs,” said Horstman. “I wasn’t at all surprised by the level of interest it drew.” Rounding out the early photography highlights was the personal

has many options for storing and displaying his or her favorite collection. My best advice is to think practical and plan long-term. You can set up a museum quality display in your own home for a lot less then you may think. This is a positive side effect of the antiques and collectibles marketplace going mainstream. So why not display it?

1. Make your own. Both Lowe’s and Home Depot have a good selection of customizable do-it-yourself shelving. Sometimes it’s best to do your own thing. This is especially true if you want to show off a collection of different sized items. I have several friends who built customizable shelving into the walls of their homes with relative ease. I know one hardcore antique bottle collector who did this and then added front glass panels to the shelving to give it a unique museum quality appearance. The result was nothing short of brilliant, just as long as he doesn’t plan on moving any time soon. In conclusion, a collector

Kallax shelving units that start for under $50. These are a perfect sized space for 12-inch vinyl records. Record enthusiasts love them. I use these as well to store my own growing vinyl record collection. 3. Think like a retailer. Collectors wanting to show off their wares in retail quality glass display cases have several options. Surprisingly, this can be done for much less than you think. Store Supply Warehouse sells to the general public as well as retail businesses. You can find them online at www.storesupply.com, and they have retail quality glass display cases for as low as $167. Shipping is extra, and some assembly is required. That said, due to the generally high cost of shipping glass display cases, I would recommend going this route only if you are looking to buy two or more units to save on combined shipping costs. They also have a plethora of

Thanks, in part, to the internet, now is a great time to be a collector. Not only can collectors log on to the internet and take part in auctions from all around the world any hour of any day, but we can also share information and knowledge with the click of a mouse. In fact, never before in the history of the antiques and collectibles marketplace has so much information been so readily available. One of the top questions I get asked is how best to affordably display a collection. Luckily, buying shelving and display items doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Listed below are some of my top tips to help any collector or enthusiast proudly display any kind of collection without breaking the bank. 5. Check out Youtube and Pinterest for ideas. Some knowledgeable collectors have an online presence. This can be through sites like YouTube or Pinterest that allow enthusiasts to show off their interests and possessions. Pay close attention to videos and pictures showing their personal collections and how they are displayed. Simply using an internet search engine such as Google and typing in phrases like “PEZ collection” or “toy collection” is usually enough to get hundreds of search results. This allows you to see a multitude of ideas for your own display and storage options. 4. The answer is sometimes Swedish for common sense. Ikea is one of the best home furnishing concepts to come along in my lifetime. The Swedish company has sustained parabolic growth in the
last two decades, and as a result has come up with some incredible home organization and storage options. Some of these are subtly geared toward the hardcore collector. Here is a list of some of my favorites. First up is the ever popular Detolf glass cabinet. At $59, this is one option that collectors love. Ironically, the cabinet was actually first introduced to the market for the storage and display of wine glasses. The product became so popular among collectors that Ikea began to re-market it for other uses over the years. This glass display cabinet stands about 64 inches high, has four glass shelves, and is easy to assemble. It’s great for action figures, graded comic books, and almost any other small to medium sized collectible worth displaying. It is among the most popular glass display cabinets on the market today. If you watch a lot of collecting videos on YouTube or even one of the many reality television shows geared toward antiques and collectibles, then chances are you have already seen the Detolf glass cabinet. Another Ikea option that collectors love is Ikea’s Billy Bookshelves. These bookshelves are customizable and start at around $59 and go up in price from there. Some of the deluxe options feature optional closing glass doors and adjustable shelves. These are perfect for books, video games, action figures, and other small collectibles that can easily be arranged or stacked. I use these for my video game collection as well as books on antiques and collectibles. Ikea is also known for its excellent vinyl record storage options. Record collectors should be sure to check out the affordable cube-sized

Antiques & Auction News — December 22, 2017 - - 5
For many, the driving force in creating a plan for one’s collection (e.g. stuff) is to ensure that any family items stay in the family. You know, heirlooms, like Great Aunt Tilly’s wedding dress, and great-great-grandfather’s tool chest. How should those items be factored into a plan for your stuff? Your first task for planning for the sentimental stuff is to create a detailed inventory of it and include everything you know about it (who made it or used it, when, where, and how it was passed down to you, etc.). Getting all the facts down is extremely important! Anyone who has spent much time in the antiques business has seen objects with family histories that are sketchy, at best, and that is usually because no one ever documented the history. Simply passing the story down orally quickly turns into a game of telephone, and the next thing you know, you have a Wallace Nutting joint stool with a story of coming over on the Mayflower. As you compile this inventory, be realistic. If that Victorian washstand was purchased by your mother at an auction in 1965, then is it really important to your family? Focus on those objects that have been in the family for
generations or have important origins (made by a family member, wedding gift, you get the idea). Play the role of curator of your family’s history, and evaluate each item in terms of its role in telling the family story. Also, prioritize! If you are fortunate enough to have dozens and dozens of family antiques, list them in order of your perceived importance, from those that (according to you) absolutely must stay in the family (portraits of the first ancestors to come to America, for example) to those items that are less critical to your family story (a pressed glass vase that may or may not have been in your great-grandmother’s home). Perhaps your kids will be more responsive to your desire to keep heirlooms in the family if you don’t expect them to absorb half a house full of dusty stuff. Next, talk to your family and others likely to have an interest in your family heirlooms. Don’t assume everything will be wanted (or that no one will want anything). Use some salesmanship! Talk up the stories and the history. Certainly some in your family will express absolutely no interest in taking on the responsibility of ownership (no matter how small your list), but it’s also quite possible that through learning the stories of some of the objects someone’s

Caesars: A Renaissance Mystery,” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The complete set has not been seen together since the mid-19th century, when it was disassembled and dispersed, its constituent parts misidentified and mismatched. In addition, the elements of all 12 Tazze will be displayed in their original configuration, a unique opportunity for modern viewers to appreciate one of the most enigmatic monuments of the work of 16th-century goldsmiths. The exhibition is made possible by The Schroder Foundation, Selim K. Zilkha, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, Nina von Maltzahn, and an anonymous donor. It will run until March 11, 2018, in the Robert Lehman Wing, Gallery 955. “The Silver Caesars” will highlight the elegance and astonishing erudition of the Tazze, presenting them with a small selection of other works in silver and other media, including both ancient and Renaissance coins and medals and Renaissance prints, books, and paintings. The exhibition will consider such topics as 19th-century views of the Renaissance and Renaissance views of ancient Rome. Examples of 19th-century works that the Tazze inspired will be included. In addition to offering new insights into the Tazze and their history, the exhibition will explore the set’s famously mysterious reputation, engaging the visitor in tracing clues

The superb technical virtuosity of Renaissance silversmiths is nowhere more evident than in the magnificent set of 12 silver-gilt standing cups from the 16th century known collectively as the Aldobrandini Tazze. Each of the Tazze stands over a foot tall and features a shallow footed dish surmounted by a figure of one of the first 12 Caesars. On the intricately wrought interior of each dish appears four episodes from the life of the corresponding ruler, as recounted by the Roman historian Suetonius. Although the Tazze are among the finest and rarest examples of 16th-century European silverwork, little is known about their creation. The questions of when, where, why, for whom, and by whom these splendid luxury objects were made will be addressed in the exhibition, “The Silver

Veronese In Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored Paintings To Leave Italy For The First Time The Frick Collection is presenting a focused exhibition on two important Renaissance paintings by the celebrated artist Paolo Veronese (1528-88), “St. Jerome in the Wilderness” and “St. Agatha Visited in Prison by St. Peter.” While the paintings are known to scholars, their remote location in a church in Murano, an island in the lagoon of Venice known today for its glassmaking studios and shops, has made them difficult to study. “St. Jerome in the Wilderness” has been exhibited outside the church only once, in 1939, in the Paolo Veronese exhibition at Ca’ Giustinian, in Venice, while “St. Agatha Visited in Prison by St. Peter” has not left the church since being installed in the early 19th century. These two rarely seen canvases have left Italy for the first time since their creation, over
Paolo Veronese’s (1528-88) “St. Agatha Visited in Prison by St. Peter,” 1566–67, is an oil-on-canvas, from San Pietro Martire, Murano. returned to their original glory. “Veronese in Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored,” on view through March 11, 2018, will provide a unique opportunity for an international audience to discover these two masterpieces in the Frick’s unique setting. The exhibition is organized by the Frick’s Peter Jay Sharp chief curator Xavier F. Salomon, an eminent Veronese scholar (who wrote the accompanying catalogue), and Venetian Heritage. The Frick Collection is located at 1 E. 70th St. in New York City. To learn more, readers may call 212-547-0710.

What’s it worth? As an auctioneer, I believe in the auction method of selling. However, auction is not right for everyone or everything. Rare, highly desirable items and merchandise without condition issues are often good candidates for auction. Items that are common, less desirable, or have condition issues are often not auction worthy.
S992537
If you’re dealing with highend antiques and collectibles, you can negotiate better selling terms for your items. Certain high-end auction houses will even sell at “zero commission” just to get the consignment and then make their money off the buyer’s premium. But when selling normal merchandise, regardless of the auctioneer or your geographic location, there are three main things you need to know when selling at auction. 1. Commission. Every auctioneer is going to charge you a commission. It may be a flat or sliding scale commission, but you’re going to pay a commission. Assume 20 to 25 as a percentage.
2. Delivery fee. The auctioneer’s commission rarely includes free pickup. You’re responsible for getting the merchandise there. That’s easy for coins, jewelry, and small items but can get pricey for a house full of furniture. 3. Absolute auction. Most auctioneers will sell at “absolute auction,” which means no minimum or reserve. You may want $500 on your upholstered sofa; however, if the highest bid is only $10, then it’s gone at $10. So before deciding to go the auction route, run your numbers to estimate whether the expected sale price, less commission, delivery expense and risk, are worth rolling the dice at auction in your particular situation.
