Yardley Community Centre’s 64th Annual Antiques Show Set For Jan. 12 And 13 FRIDAY DECEMBER 29, 2017 • VOL. 48, NO. 52

The Nimble Nicks Of Christmas Land By Roy Nuhn The Whitney publishing company founded by Civil War veteran George Whitney in his hometown of Worcester, Mass., has long been dear to the hearts of collectors everywhere because of its 19thcentury valentines. But Whitney has also gained admiration and respect for having made the Yuletide in the years before World War I a happier, more colorful holiday.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12 and 13, the Yardley Community Centre will host its 64th annual antiques show. Collectors and dealers are encouraged to shop Bucks County’s first show of the new year. The community center is located at 64 S. Main St. in the heart of the borough of Yardley, Pa. Among the keys to the longevity of this show are the

Beginning at the turn of the 20th century and continuing up to about 1920, the Whitney Company manufactured huge numbers of greeting cards, children’s books, souvenir postcards, paper toys and novelties of every description for Christmas. They were also involved with other holidays, including Halloween, Easter, and Valentine’s Day. But Christmas was the big selling season, just as it was, and still

Featured material among the 21 exhibiting dealers will include high style and country furnishings, primitives and early smalls, glassware, china, jewelry, books, dolls, toys, silver, textiles, and more. D’Amore Promotions will host its 750-booth D.C. Big Flea and Antiques Market at the Dulles Expo on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 6 and 7. This show will mark its 20th anniversary in the Washington, D.C., suburbs at this location, with every show a soldout event. In an interview this week, Joan Sides recalled how she took on the risk of high expenses, including rental and promotion for this show, to create the new venue for dealers that offers her trademark low rents and great attractions for the public so that they both would succeed. Her efforts were rewarded with

a soldout show, all the spaces filled with great merchandise, and crowds of patrons. Sides was overjoyed, and the dealers were thrilled with their results, so much so that they have remained faithful to the brand for the past 20 years in an ever-changing marketplace. The upcoming Jan. 6 and 7 show is again sold out, 750 booths strong. Admission costs only $10 for a twoday admission. Shoppers can expect to find a great selection of antiques and art, home décor, and collectibles. The Dulles Expo Center is located at 4320 Chantilly Shopping Continued on page 3

is, for most publishers. In the process of creating and marketing this huge output of merchandise for the nation’s five-and-dimes, department stores, variety shops, and other retail outlets, Whitney introduced a line of Nimble Nicks products. One of the earliest, if not the first, ensemble of characters especially created by a publisher for its paper novelties, the Nimble Nicks were Santa’s helpers. Others, Rose O’Neill’s Kewpies, Palmer Cox’s Brownies, and R.F. Outcault’s Buster Brown, among them, began as magazine illustrations, dolls, or comic strip heroes and heroines. The Nimble Nicks, cute little guys who loved a good time almost as much as they loved helping Santa make toys and get ready for his once-a-year Christmas Eve trip, were American originals. They came along a half-century after George Whitney had started his valentine business. During the heyday of the

These are inside pages of the storybook. picture postcard fad in the United States, from about 1904 to 1917, the Whitney Company was a major presence. They printed and sold several hundred designs for all holidays. So vast was its production that collectors even today still do not know for sure the entire story. Brightly colored, embossed Christmas postcards featuring cheery, pleasant children were issued in sets of six. The same artwork

was also used for other holiday novelties, including greeting cards, prints and soft bound juvenile books. Whitney’s Santa Claus illustrations, for instance, provided pictorials for Christmas greeting cards, paper toys and picture books. These showed Santa, often with children, unpacking his toys, reading wish lists, trudging through the snow, and placing gailywrapped packages under Christmas trees. And then there were the Nimble Nicks. On postcards and other paper goods and in storybooks, they were probably introduced about 1915 and stayed around until the early 1920s. Many Nimble Nicks souvenir postcards, at least two dozen of them, were printed, each in runs of tens to hundreds of thousands of copies. Countless other merchandise, including easel stand-ups, were also produced, as well as

illustrated books. Nimble Nicks may well have been the world’s first companions for Santa Claus. Others, like Rudolph and Frosty, came along much later. Each delightful Nimble Nick was a playful little imp whose greatest thrill in life was wearing a tiny Santa Claus suit. Their charm has endured well over the years, and many collectors today are in love with them. They lived in a fantasy place called Christmas Land, where snow remained yearround. At first, they are usually mistaken for fairies, elves or pixies. However, a closer examination reveals the chubby fellows, and gals (there’s one of them), to be no more than children who never grow up. They are taller and larger than the various mythical forest creatures they are often confused with, and they are perfectly proportioned. Each

Nick has blonde hair and one curl at the top of his forehead that peaks out from under the red hood. The hair, diminutive size, and Santa Claus outfits are their trademarks, forever tagging them as Nimble Nicks. The Nicks dwelled in cute tiny houses that did not even reach a regular person’s knee, and they drove around Christmas Land in kiddie-cars (so the illustrated storybooks tell us). Also at party time, out came the “funny little chairs” upon which the little fellows sat while eating their favorite treat, turkey stew. When not helping Santa Claus, the Nicks enjoyed life to the hilt. One of their greatest pleasures was to bunch up as many of themselves as possible, as close as they could, onto giant sleds and go cascading down giant snow-covered hills. Another activity enjoyed by all was incessant snowball fighting. Whitney published its

many different designs of the Nimble Nicks in vivid red coloring. These, like the firm’s other Christmas merchandise, were sold in the nation’s stores, particularly Woolworth’s, well into the late 1920s and early 1930s, though the actual printing of them had stopped years before, around 1925. Several books aimed at young people between the ages of 3 and 10 were printed by Whitney detailing the adventures of the Nimble Nicks. These were usually diecut, 6-by-9 inches in size, and averaged about 12 illustrated pages. Today, such books are very rare. Whitney also marketed a paper novelty product line known as easel stand-ups. The top half of the design was a die-cut and popped out of its perforations when folded backward and clipped with a tab. The card could then stand up, and part of the illustration was freestanding. About a half-dozen Nimble Nicks designs were printed in this format. The greeting card company that once flourished under the guiding hand of George C. Whitney has been gone now for well over a half-century, but collectors continue to be intrigued and passionate about the valentines, postcards and books the firm published in its 80-year lifetime. To these collectors, nothing is more treasured today than the ephemera associated with the Nimble Nicks, Santa’s helpers up north in a place called Christmas Land.

So, I think all of us have a favorite dealer or co-op or shop that we hope no one knows about. It is often the dealer who has the great combination of both an eye for stuff and pricing that is not crazy. When we lived in New Mexico, there was an antiques co-op in Albuquerque where we would often visit. The vast majority of the booths were pretty bad (expensive and not

fewer items, but more likely, others had discovered our secret. Similarly, I have a favorite dealer on eBay. He or she handles wonderful treasures. I began bidding and buying almost everything that was offered. The quality was excellent, and few people seemed to know what they had. By the third set of postings, everyone

very good items), but there was one that had great stuff. The dealer had a great eye for things and did not price the material at a retail level. They clearly were able to purchase items very inexpensively. We figured the dealer patronized a lot of yard sales on the nearby Indian reservations. We loved that dealer, and it was always our first stop when we got to town. Unlike other favorite dealers, this one never changed pricing. Everything was always priced the same, and whether big or small, new or old, important or common, it was one of three prices. By the time we left New Mexico, others had discovered the dealer, and we found fewer and fewer items. Perhaps the dealer was finding

years—great pottery, cool ceramics, and wonderful primitives, priced to sell. I love dealers who price things to move. No private museum here, but rather wonderful items ready to move. This time, the booth was empty. Others had discovered my secret. I have no really great advice for all of us who have favorite dealers, except to encourage you to patronize them. My mentor in college, Dr. Irwin Richman, always told me that you regretted the ones you did not buy. This is sage advice and very true. Find

A Consignment Sale Of A Different Kind Event To Offer Nuts, Bolts, And More Consignment sales of clothing and supplies for infants and children have become big business in recent years. After attending one such event, Boni Henry had the idea to host a similar event but with a more rugged theme. Thus, three years ago, the Nuts ‘n’ Bolts consignment sale was first held at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, located 4 miles east of Quarryville, Pa., on Route 372. The fourth annual event will be held at the church on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the event of heavy snow, the sale will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20. Coffee and snacks will be available free of charge during the sale. Community members may drop off items at the church between 5 and 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12. Folks with a large number of items may reserve entire tables for their goods. Consignors do not have to be at their tables during the sale. They may return to the church at 1 p.m. on Jan. 13 to collect their unsold items, or they may donate their items to the church. While the specific merchandise will be unknown until Jan. 12, Henry suggested that general categories will include tools, fishing and hunting gear, building supplies, construction

materials, landscaping equipment, handmade crafts and pine furniture, antiques, and vintage jewelry and décor. “This is an opportunity for you who wish to sell some of the stuff you find in your garages, basements, shops, sheds, and attics,” said Henry. “I’ve gotten rid of some stuff,” added her husband, Dan Henry. This year, Henry is focusing on antiques and vintage jewelry, and she has invited professional vendors to participate. That addition to the sale was suggested at the inaugural event, and now is the time to make it happen, she said. The sale will be held in MOPC’s fellowship hall, and there will be room for at least 20 vendor tables. Folks who would like to reserve a table may call Boni at 717-808-4534 or Dan at 717-381-9947. The church will retain a portion of the proceeds from the consignment sale, and the funds will be put toward the annual mission trip to Tamshiyacu, Peru. Dan’s brother, David Henry, is an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City, Mo., and he has led a trip to Tamshiyacu regularly for a number of years. The groups work with Medical Mission, Inc. and the Amazon Mission Fellowship to provide primary medical care, medications to eradicate parasites, water

purifying systems, public health education, and fellowship to members of a local church and its surrounding community. Typically, the group hosts a vacation Bible school for the area children and provides labor and construction expertise for projects at the church and at the school it operates. One of the goals for the 2018 trip is to work on a church elder’s house. “My brother was there in November and found out it needs extensive repair,” said Dan, relating that the house had sustained significant water damage. “We’re always looking for people to go with us,” added Boni. from the history of travel and exploration, early science and medicine to classic literature, modern first editions, and children’s and illustrated books. Items range from a few dollars to six figures. “Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ has captured the imagination of readers and artists for 200 years and has spawned a complete genre of literature, movies and pop culture,” said Michael R. Thompson, Book Fair co-chair of the Southern California Chapter of the ABAA. “We hope the myriad expressions of the Frankenstein story in this exhibition will excite Book Fair visitors about the possibilities of collecting in subject areas that interest them. With hundreds of top booksellers across the country and around the world, the Book Fair affords boundless opportunities for both the experienced and new collector to unleash their passions.”

“The 2018 edition of the Book Fair will have an especially strong international flavor, as many of the foreign dealers assembled for the ILAB Congress in Pasadena the preceding week will stay on to exhibit,” said Book Fair co-chair Jennifer Johnson. “We are particularly excited to welcome a group of Japanese dealers, who are exhibiting at our Book Fair for the first time.” This weekend extravaganza of rare and beautiful books will also include talks and seminars, including a session on the basics of collecting. Discovery Day on Sunday lets attendees present three items to experts for free examination. Designed with the budding collector in mind, Book Fair Finds is a program in which dealers spotlight items priced at $100 or less. The Book Fair will take place at the Pasadena Convention Center at 300 E. Green St., Pasadena, Calif. Tickets on Friday will be $25 for three-day admission. Proceeds from Friday tickets benefit and offer free admission to the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens during the month of February. Tickets on Saturday or Sunday will be $15 and include return entry and free admission to the Huntington during the fair. For more information, call 800-454-6401 or visit www.cabookfair.com.
