Charles Dickens Handwritten Signed Quote From “A Christmas Carol” Brings $23,597 A Charles Dickens handwritten signed quotation from “A Christmas Carol” sold for $23,597 at Bostonbased RR Auction during its Fine Autographs and Artifacts Auction. The online sale began on Nov. 16 and concluded Dec. 5. The immensely desirable quotation on an off-white stationery sheet read, in full, “And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless us every one!’ Charles Dickens, Knebworth, Tuesday Eighteenth June, 1861,” housed with a handsome engraving of Dickens inside a red leather presentation folder, with attractive gilt text and design to cover and interior boards. Boasting bold handwriting and a crisp, neat signature, this handwritten quote captures the final line of Dickens’ classic 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol.” This is only the third autographed signed quotation RR Auction has offered from the great Victorian scribe and the first from what is perhaps his most enduring and celebrated work. Also up for auction was an Al Capone signed Christmas and New Year’s card that sold for $13,581. The front of the card features a serene artistic portrait of the Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus in a meadow that is signed and inscribed inside, “Your Dear Friend, Al Capone, Regards to Frank & Joe.”

Capone grew up in a Catholic family and had attended a strict Catholic school until the age of 14. After that, he seems to have had little to do with the church. Still, Capone was known to be especially charitable at Christmas, delivering boxes of candy, fruit baskets, turkeys, and gifts to students and teachers at local schools, in addition to dressing up as Santa Claus for family and friends. The notorious gangster’s autograph is scarce in any format, and this personal Christmas card offers a unique glimpse into his softer side. Continued on page 3

“The Gentleman and CabinetMaker’s Director.” To celebrate the 300th anniversary of Chippendale’s birth, this exhibition looks closely at how the unprecedented publication cemented Chippendale’s name as England’s most famous cabinetmaker and also endured to inspire furniture design up to the present day. Built around works in The Met collection, the exhibition combines the original preparatory drawings from the Chippendale workshop with a selection of British and American furniture inspired by Chippendale’s designs and aesthetic. The artist’s legacy is presented through representations in portrait painting and revival pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Chippendaleinspired chair, designed in 1984 by the architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, is one of the highlights. The exhibition is made possible in part by Richard Hampton Jenrette and David Bartsch and Joan Haffenreffer Bartsch. The Met’s quarterly Bulletin program is supported in part by the Lila Acheson Wallace Fund for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, established by the cofounder of Reader’s Digest. This Bulletin is made possible by the William Cullen Bryant Fellows of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics By Shawn Surmick When someone hears the term ancient artifacts, images of Indiana Jones embarking on a dangerous adventure in search of some lost relic are usually dancing in the forefront of that person’s mind. That said, the “Indiana Jones” movie franchise is credited with having a lasting impact on at least one columnist in the antiques and collectibles trade, as I have always lamented that without having been exposed to the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” movie at a very young age by my father, my entry into the antiques and collectibles world would have occurred much later. In fact, I place the entire “Indiana Jones” movie franchise well above the “Star Wars” movie franchise as having the most profound effect on both my youth and my upbringing. Sadly, the field of collecting ancient artifacts is not nearly as exciting as most of the adventures of Indiana Jones. Simply stated, the field of ancient artifacts covers the gamut of rare and coveted antiquities to prehistoric fossils and even Native American artifacts. It is the last category that I will be focusing on here, more specifically Native American arrowheads, but first, a brief history lesson is in order. Some of the first known Native American arrowheads were created thousands of years ago and were carved out of various materials such as flint, agate, jasper, and quartzite. They represent some of the earliest known remnants as to how our prehistoric ancestors lived. That said, collecting arrowheads is a somewhat esoteric hobby within the greater antiques and collectibles field. Over the

years, the hobby has grown considerably, and the most sought-after artifacts are unlike most of the arrowheads that casual enthusiasts may have come into contact with through museum souvenir shops or through the possessions of a close relative who owned some specimens. Much like digging up antique bottles, arrowhead collecting was quite popular back when you could still discover lessthan-stellar specimens on plots of undeveloped land. I fondly remember my father sharing stories of his youth spent growing up around Hazleton, Pa., and him stumbling upon multiple broken arrowheads on the outskirts of undeveloped forest land. Today, thanks to the rise of better authentication techniques and well-versed experts within the trade, the history, certification, and grading of these treasures has advanced in ways never before thought possible. Now, respected auction houses deal in these fascinating treasures. In the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, a plethora of fake Native American arrowheads engulfed the secondary market. Some of these fakes and forgeries were so well made that they continue to baffle some experts in the trade to this day. Others were so badly made that even casual enthusiasts with no formal training can easily identify them. The field of Native American arrowhead collecting is an advanced area of study that no novice should undertake without enlisting the skills of multiple well-respected experts in the trade. Beginning collectors and novices who wish to spend significant amounts of money purchasing authentic artifacts should begin by reading and learning about the subject of not just Native American arrowheads, but also the
entire market for Native American artifacts in general. Most auction houses that cater to authentic Native American arrowheads tend to also specialize in the greater Native American artifact marketplace as well. One book that is a must-have to any up and coming arrowhead collector is the most recent edition of “The Official Overstreet Indian Arrowheads Identification and Price Guide.” The guide gives an unprecedented listing as to what makes certain arrowheads valuable and lists tips for identifying certain artifacts from different time periods. Another recent development that has greatly affected the marketplace for Native American artifacts is the advent of third-party certification and grading. Companies like IAGA, which is short for Indian Artifact Grading Authority, can help you not only identify and authenticate your treasures, but also grade them by condition of the overall specimen. This can help determine a fair value on the secondary market, as prices for even the most sought-after artifacts have been volatile over the years, while also breaking new records at high-profile auctions. There seems to be a lot of wealthy collectors chasing after the most coveted specimens on the market today, but would-be speculators should take note that the middle range and lower end of the market have not been affected by this same frenzy. Occasionally, well-vetted auction houses like Morphy Auctions will hold exclusive auctions that cater to Native American artifacts. It should be stated that even though these auctions are run by experts in the industry, collectors are still encouraged to do their own research on the items they may be interested

in obtaining. Unlike the field of antique bottle collecting or modern-day collecting mainstays like vintage “Star Wars” figures and toys, the hobby of collecting ancient artifacts is much more complex. A novice collector can easily spend decades studying some of the most stellar and valuable finds without even scratching the surface of what the overall market has to offer. Contrary to popular belief, most Native American arrowheads are not all that valuable, as some can be had for $1 to $40 each. Condition, age, and rarity are what separates a $40 arrowhead from a $500 arrowhead and a $10,000 arrowhead from a $500 one. The high-end markets of this trade are not for the casual enthusiast. In conclusion, I own several Native American arrowheads and find the pieces to be quite impressive. I should also state that I do not trust my own judgment when identifying and buying these kinds of pieces and always enlist the help of professionals to guide me in any purchases I choose to make. Should any readers decide to dabble in this exciting field of study, I strongly urge you to do the same.

Many outstanding pieces he amassed during his lifetime have been donated to major museums. Four items have remained in his family, until now, such as a Chester County, Pa., walnut spice chest, ca. 1755, with line and berry inlay (est. $20,000-$40,000); a Reading, Pa., Chippendale cherry tall case clock with floral carved tympanum and columns (est. $20,000-$30,000); a Soap Hollow paint-decorated poplar two-part Dutch cupboard, ca. 1870, retaining its original stencil decoration (est. $4,000$7,000); and a New England painted pine chair table, ca. 1750, with shoe feet (est. $4,000-$6,000). To follow is a collection of fine jewelry of 17 pieces of sculptural gold jewelry by local sculptor André Harvey. Harvey lived and worked in the Brandywine Valley. His works were inspired by his childhood in Chadds Ford, Pa. Each piece exhibits Harvey’s remarkably intricate detailing and have been specially cast, signed and numbered by the artist. Jade

Pook & Pook’s first auction of the New Year will be an important two-day Americana and International Auction with a spotlight on significant pieces of early American furniture. Session one will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, and session two at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 12. Over 700 lots are set to cross the block over the two-day sale, and bidders are welcome to bid in-house via absentee or phone bid, or online on bidsquare.com. Pook & Pook has received a great deal of high quality
antiques for this sale, with several pieces hitting the market for the first time in over half a century. Day one draws its strength from four singleowner collections, including exceptional antiques from Titus Geesey, a consignment of fine jewelry from a Delaware family, international items from the estate of Kenneth and Elizabeth Johnson, and New England furniture and antique firearms from the collection of Bruce and Edie Smart. Day two will be a mix of fine art, American and international antiques, and decorative arts from the estate of Charlene Sussel. Titus Geesey was an astute collector and personal secretary to Pierre S. DuPont. His name was well-known among Pennsylvania German collecting circles. He died in 1969.

The Eagles Soared At Rich Penn’s Three-Day Sale Case Eagle On Globe Diecut Porcelain Sign Brings $7,540 The Nov. 2, 3, and 4 Rich Penn auction in Waterloo, Iowa, had a record number of bidders from across the globe for a Penn sale. With nearly 40 countries represented, prices were strong across all categories. Selling over 300 noncataloged lots kicked off day one at noon. Those lots sold at 90 lots per hour. Day two and three were different. There were 700 lots sold the second day, and a Case eagle on globe sign took flight for top lot honors. The farm implement single-sided diecut porcelain sign in excellent condition sold for $7,540. Material sold that session consisted of soda fountain items and toys. Among them were strong Coca-Cola items, with an original condition Vendo 44 gas station Coke machine popping a selling price of $3,960. A Vendo 81D in great
condition brought $1,980. A double-sided porcelain CocaCola “Fountain Service” sign pulled in $3,600, while another Coca-Cola porcelain sign hit $2,700, and a Coca-Cola flange sign quickly coaxed up bidding to $1,925. All prices include the buyers’ premium. Other soda signs appealed to bidders as well. Several rare Whistle signs brought strong interest. A 1948 selfframed Whistle sign quickly snapped up a $2,475 top bid, while a larger example, but not in quite the same great condition, still chirped out a $2,088 selling price. A near mint 7up “Fresh Up” selfframed and embossed metal sign did indeed live up to its slogan, “It Likes You.” In fact, it
liked bidders so well, they stepped up the bidding to $2,227. Root Beer brought frothy interest as well. After a frenzy of internet bidding, a near mint Hires self-framed metal sign with large bottle graphics brought $2,400. Throughout the auction, toys were strong too. A rare Gendron “Spirit of St. Louis” pressed steel pedal airplane flew away in clear skies with a $2,750 bid in the cargo hold. An early (ca. 1930s) batteryoperated Bing sedan rolled away with a $3,190 bid in tow. A Dark Town Battery mechanical bank hit a line drive bid to bring home $1,920. The Buddy “L” collection offered, one of the largest to come to market in recent years, did well
throughout. A Buddy “L” Road Roller, Model 290, in restored condition, sold for $1,650. A trencher on treads brought $2,200, and a Model 208 Coach packed in a $2,320 bid. The TReproduction Buddy “L” toys did well too. A Tugboat No. 3000 chugged away pulling a $2,200 bid, and a second one went for $2,160. The soda fountain session had some intriguing items. An unusual cast-iron ice cream table, with swing-out seats, realized $3,000. The Eskimo Pie “Magic Cooler” with graphics and cast Eskimo feet attracted a selling price of $1,920. Syrup dispensers now seem to be making a good comeback from lower prices in recent years. A good original Ward’s Orange-Crush syrup dispenser, the color added version, sold for $1,680. The Ward’s was followed by a Fowler’s Cherry Smash dispenser; with some roughness on the bottom, it still pumped out a $1,650 selling price.
A toy Bing sedan with motor, very rare, no dents, motor in great working condition, gears excellent, two battery compartments very clean with no corrosion, attached steering cable intact, 100 percent original with driver, ca. 1932, sold for $3,190.
The Whistle soda fountain sign, selfframed embossed metal by T.W. Co.MI-14, dated 1948, in near mint condition, 30-by-26 inches, sold for $2,475.
A Case eagle on globe trade sign, handcarved wood, flat on back, originally mounted for use at a Case dealership in southern Indiana, early 1900s, 27 inches high, sold for This Dark Town Battery mechanical bank, manufactured by J.& E. Stevens, Feb. 2, 1875, cast-iron with original paint, with minor wear, sold for $1,920. $3,025.
This Coca-Cola “Drink Coca-Cola Ice Cold” double-sided metal flange sign, marked AM 8-51, mint condition, went for $1,925.
The Case farm implement eagle on globe single-sided diecut porcelain sign in excellent condition, 81 inches high, sold for $7,540. From the drug store to the gas station, more great pieces kept coming across the block. A porcelain single-sided Ford Authorized Service Station sign in very good condition pumped up a bid of $2,090. A double-sided metal flange Racine Tires sign, by Chas W. Shonk Co. and in new-oldstock condition, rolled up a top bid of $2,784. One of the petroliana pieces with the greatest graphics was a display cabinet for the Tire Saver Alligator Boot; the “Alligator” lithography was by “The American Art Works, Coshocton, OH.” The alligator snapped up a big bid of $3,740. Another tire-related piece with strong interest was a Firestone Tires reversepaint-on-glass light-up sign in metal can. It brought $1,740.
A Coca-Cola machine, Vendo V-81D, one of the most sought-after Coke machines, can vend many different sized bottles plus nine different brands. Embossed steel, produced in mid- to late 1950s, 60 inches high, it sold for $1,980. There were several Case implement pieces that brought bidder interest from across the country. mentioned earlier, but 27 inches high, brought $3,025. Coin-op collectors always have a range of machines to put their money in. The two top selling pieces were both Wurlitzer jukeboxes. A beautiful model 800, ca. 1941, in original working condition, played for $3,575. A newer model 1700, ca. 1954, also in great original working condition, went to a new home for $3,190. An early Seeburg model 8200, with an older restoration and also in working condition, sold for $1,920. A working condition figural carved Indian with a Mills slot machine rounded up a bid of $1,980, while a Rockola Sweepstakes trade stimulator sold at $1,680. An excellent Pulver Too Choos gum machine with the Yellow Kid figure dispensed a bid of $1,320. There were several examples of more unusual pieces

selling on both days. Saturday’s example was the Van Berkel’s Original, ca. 1912, meat slicer. It appeared to be complete, but untested. It still sliced up a nice thick bid of $2,040. A vintage movie camera from the Feerless Camera Co., Hollywood, Calif., likely just a movie prop, captured $4,500 on day three. “This was such a fun auction, with huge variety of
great Buddy ‘L’ toys. And there are more coming in our spring auction in April! It made me think of all the kids that must have been wild with excitement on Christmas morning. Versailles Continued from page 8
Destination Versailles. In 1682, Louis XIV removed the seat of government from Paris to Versailles (Pierre Denis Martin the Younger. View of the Château de Versailles from the Parade Grounds, 1722). Louis XIV had to create a new invitation-only retreat. This was Marly, a small nearby estate. As he passed by, hopeful courtiers would murmur, “Sire, Marly.” There were always more requests than places. The guest list was published before each stay. Message received. Everyone had to submit. That included diplomats, who received explicit status signals at Versailles. Access to the Cabinet du Conseil, which was the room where the king met with his advisers, was controlled by an enfilade of double doors opening, or not opening, as the case may be. Both doors would fly open on the approach of an ambassador, but a mere envoyé extraordinaire would have to make his way through a succession of single doors. The synchronization depended on a cadre of observant and dexterous stage hands, in effect. Some diplomatic missions entered into palace lore. Most famous is the Siamese embassy of 1686. Exceptionally, it took place in the Hall of Mirrors instead of the king’s bedroom and was attended by 1,500 spectators. The Siamese kowtowed to the Sun King with a series of deep agile bows and prostrated themselves at his feet. They remained on their knees for the rest of the audience. It was a spectacular pageant and became a working model for similar events, including the Persian delegation, which arrived in 1715, shortly before
Never alone. The king was surrounded by courtiers from lever to coucher (Etienne Allegrain. Promenade of Louis XIV in Front of the North Parterre, ca. 1688).
Louis XIV’s death. Innovations on that occasion included placing the spectators on risers and encouraging the ladies to wear jewels in their hair, so that they would be refracted by the sunlight, which, in turn, would be reflected in the mirrors. Not everyone was impressed. Some resented the resistance (or obliviousness) of non-Europeans to standing and speaking according to precedence. This was what made the Persian ambassador “as disgraceful as his wretched suite and miserable presents” in the words of the waspish Saint-Simon. They were also exempt from making the round of Parisian tailors before presenting themselves to the king. Native dress had a strategic use. When Benjamin Franklin visited Versailles as a subject of R028407

of state depended not on sharpshooters in shades, but an adherence to ceremony and politeness. Magnanimity was part of the program. Louis XVI had the visitor who broke the expensive porcelain vase reassured that the loss was no matter. So, too, was graciousness, in listening to ambiguous praise of the perpetual work in progress that was Versailles. The sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini got off a real zinger. Speaking to Louis XIV, he said “Sire, up to now, I thought your majesty was great in great things, now I recognize that he is wondrously great even in the little things.” An absolute monarch had to put up with a lot. For example, total strangers were free to wander around his living quarters in his absence. Open to all were the Grands Appartements, or the reception rooms, comprising salons, antechamber, and bedchamber. The private apartment required special permission. In some cases, the king had just left. There were “those slight traits of disorder that shewed he lived in it,” wrote one Englishman during Louis XVI’s reign. The same went for the other royal apartments. There was always someone around to act as docent and guard. While the lever and coucher were off limits, the public could watch the royal family dine in public. The Grand Couvert always drew a crowd. Another place where visitors could count on seeing the king was the Hall of Mirrors, where he passed daily on his way to attend Mass. For many, though, the sight of their own reflection would have been just as amazing. “All those who walked could see themselves at full length,” wrote one Englishman. An excursion to Versailles was a little like one of those avant-garde plays where the audience gets invited on to the stage. The theatrical dimension was reinforced by the practice of charging a lower off-season rate for public transportation from Paris when the king was not in residence. Once Versailles became the official permanent palace,
Versailles Continued from page 14
George III, he followed conventional fashion, down to the sword and powdered wig. When he came back to seek support for the American Revolution, he came in the costume of a backwoodsman. It was a successful performance, and he got what he came for. Getting the outsider’s perspective on Versailles is a challenge. The catalog draws heavily for anecdotes on courtiers’ diaries and memoirs. In the case of nonWestern visitors, it’s pretty much impossible. Take the Siamese embassy, which has been turned inside out by
Native dress. Most visitors had to make the round of Parisian tailors before presenting themselves at Versailles, but non-Westerners could make a lasting impression by showing up in native dress (Jacques André Joseph Aved. Memhed Said Efendi, Ambassador of the Sublime Porte, 1742).
scholars. Nonetheless recorded opinions of the Siamese themselves are few. Inferences are sometimes possible. The king of Morocco was so amazed by his ambassador’s account of what he’d seen at Versailles that he was inspired to seed his own Bourbon dynasty by offering (unsuccessfully) to marry one of Louis XIV’s illegitimate daughters. Lost forever are the “Indian peace medals” because the Native American chiefs they were bestowed upon prized them so much they took them to the grave. The version struck for an Ivory Coast prince is lost too, as is all knowledge of what happened to the prince. Meetings with foreign rulers were tricky. The problems of precedence, who stood on whose right, and who entered the room first could be obviated if the visiting ruler came incognito. This involved assuming a lower rank, which made it possible to dispense with the ceremony and protocol. Still, these dialed-down events radiated importance. In some ways, they were the ultimate Versailles experience because they required a deep grasp of the inner workings. Hint, the assumed title referred to a place in the traveler’s domain.
