from the collection in the past, having been a one-time advisor/agent for Esmerian. Who is Ralph Esmerian and why did this collection go to auction? Esmerian was a successful fourth generation dealer in rare antique jewels. He resided in Manhattan and collected various categories of American folk art beginning in the 1960s. He was also the former chairman emeritus of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City (AFAM). In 2010, he pled guilty to a three-count indictment of wire fraud, bankruptcy fraud, and concealment of assets. He is currently midway through serving a six-year prison sentence. The once-promised gift to AFAM, published in the 2001 book “American Radiance: The Ralph Esmerian Gift to the American Folk Art Museum,” included material ensconced in a scheme that involved the collection being doublepledged as collateral. He had taken out loans in the hundreds of millions associated with his retail jewelry business, with much of the collection as security. A negotiated agreement was met in the courts for AFAM to keep 53 items while 212 once-promised items were awarded by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court through a liquidation trustee in March of 2013 to be sold by Sotheby’s. The sale generated $10.5 million for his creditors, which included both Sotheby’s and Christie’s. “By and large, the museum did a very (Continued on page 2)

Robb was an accomplished shipcarver who created shop and cigar store figures.

Esmerian had added several objects over the intervening years. One such notable example was the portrait of hatter John Mays of Schaefferstown, Pa., in his The Punch figure by Charles Henkel (18421915) dated “1870” from Brattleboro, Vt., sold for $209,000 (est. $100,000$200,000). Punch was popular as a cigar store figure namely at the end of the 19th century. The character was well-known from Punch and Judy puppet shows. This interpretation is representational of the German tradition of Punch, which showcased a slimmer figure and a grinning facial expression.

A Pennsylvania watercolor portrait of Col. Isaac Hottenstein standing outside next to a cannon in full dress regalia, attributed to the unknown “Reading Artist,” sold just over low estimate for $12,500 (est. $12,000-$15,000) to dealer David Schorsch bidding by phone. “I bought it for stock,” said Schorsch. Hottenstein (1796-1875) was originally from Maxatawny (outside Kutztown, Berks County, Pa.). Three generations of Hottenstein men served in the Pennsylvania militia. The portrait had previously sold for $4,900 on Oct. 29, 1973, at the late James Pennypacker sale held by the Pennypacker firm. Their auction facility used to be on New Holland Road near Reading, Pa. A major sale, Walter Himmelreich served as a consultant. Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s and long before, the Pennypacker Auction Centre was where prominent collections of antiques were sold. Numerous important items of Pennsylvania decorative arts in the Esmerian collection at one point went under the gavel at Pennypackers.

no one is an expert in everything and the fear of turquoise jewelry can infect dealers as much as collectors. 4) If you are traveling in the Midwest or West and looking for older jewelry…go to pawn shops! So many collectors turn up their noses at this but that is where a lot of great jewelry is hiding. 5) Remember that

Angie’s Country Corner

and want to wear. Too many people will buy an old piece because it is old and thus they assume it is great. If it is old and ugly, that ain’t gonna change! Buy what you like and wear it! 3) Don’t be afraid to look in jewelry cases at antique malls for turquoise. I think many folks get intimidated by jewelry dealers in antique malls. Remember that

S820119

mined in all qualities and much of it is flooding the market. I think if I see one more strand of “free form” turquoise stones on the market that I shall scream into the night. Many of these are also reconstituted turquoise or not even turquoise. The latter is a particular problem with new materials as chrysocolla and other blue stones are being sold as turquoise. Anyhow, I tend to stay away from that stuff like the plague. So what do you do if you want to collect and wear turquoise jewelry? Here are my thoughts: 1) Buy in the East! Out here, good quality older jewelry is priced frightfully but back East it can be found at much better prices. In fact most of the dealers here buy in the East and bring it out here. 2) Buy what you like

S798096

I have often written about Turquoise jewelry, as it is a subject that many find complex and troubling. One of the things that I decry in our world today is the abundance of cheap knock-offs that frankly scare people away from collecting. You know what I mean! The basket market has crashed and burned because of the abundance of cheap offshore baskets that are being sold everywhere. Similarly, the double edged whammy of both cheap overseas turquoise and reconstituted stones in the country has scared so many people away from buying fine Indian jewelry. So, I wanna spend a little time talking about it all and hopefully inspiring you to not only begin or grow your own collection but to wear it proudly. The fascination with southwestern Turquoise jewelry has been around for a long time. We can look back to the early 20th century (you know…a hundred years ago!) and see traders commissioning works from Indian artists

ready to go. Okay, so the abundance of all these techniques has made much of the contemporary jewelry suspect to people. Particularly since the abundance of these manipulated pieces means that every gas station, five and dime and jeweler in the southwest is selling turquoise jewelry. Should that dissuade you from buying? No! Particularly if you are looking for older pieces which is where I think the value remains. Not to disparage contemporary Indian turquoise jewelry makers by a long shot. The good ones know that all the bad turquoise is harming them and they are very concerned about how all the export work cheapens their own work. The other issue that we see with contemporary turquoise jewelry is the use of stones from Persia (Iran) and India. This turquoise is being

to be resold back East. The Gene Autry/John Wayne era brought about another fascination with turquoise jewelry. Then the influence of Fred Harvey and the Super Chief train connected more people. Then Fort Apache, Gunsmoke and Bonanza did it again. Then Ralph Lauren in the 1970s promoting jeans and turquoise. Truly, it has had its ebbs and flows but it has always been there. The challenge is that much of the best grade turquoise is long gone. Many of the mines were played out in the 1950s and today the high cost and regulation required to operate turquoise mines means that stocks continue to diminish. The hot practice now is to buy old pieces with perhaps crude settings and pull them apart to get the stones…much the way that diamonds are handled. The lack of good quality turquoise meant that stonecutters had to look to new resources including reconstituted turquoise made up of dust and fragments held together with a bonding agent. Then there are artificially dyed pieces where washed out colors suddenly can be converted into bright blue pieces. Then there is the chalky turquoise that cannot be cut into anything unless resin is introduced to it and then it is

much of the oldest jewelry is unmarked so learn the subject and don’t rely upon signatures as your only test of quality. 6) Look for pieces that have been altered. This sounds so counterintuitive for collectors but it is very true. When concha belts go out of style, Indian artists will rework the individual conchas into pins (my wife has a killer example of this that came from eBay for next to no money). 7) And if you are looking for the hot tip-buy Zuni. I am sucker for the high quality needlepoint and petit point (even finer work) that the Zuni do. It is often undervalued and I think it is a great buy! 8) Look in dealer boxes

where they are selling “Mexican jewelry.” Much Indian jewelry is confused with Mexican and so you can find some real bargains. 9) Remember a piece of jewelry is only as old as its most recent original element. Thus a buckle with an 1889 Morgan silver dollar cannot be older than 1889 but it could have been made yesterday! 10) With many Indian jewelry dealers, don’t be afraid to trade! Here in the West, trading jewelry is a long-established business practice. Take in what you don’t want and get something you do want. Most jewelry dealers are happy to do such trades. Helps them move stock along!

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is hosting an exhibition, titled “Sophie Calle: Last Seen,â€? which will showcase the French artist through Monday, March 3, in the Hostetter Gallery. “Sophie Calle: Last Seenâ€? will include Calle’s 1991 Gardner-inspired work on display for the first time at the Gardner and in Massachusetts, as well as new related work created in 2012. The 14 photographic and text based works in the show consist of two distinct series. The first, created in 1991, titled “Last Seen‌,â€? is a series of photographs and texts created shortly after the 1990 theft during which 13 objects were stolen from the Gardner. The second series, titled “What Do You See?,â€? includes new work that

Calle made in 2012 while at the museum revisiting her earlier concept. In 1990, during an exhibition of Calle’s work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, Calle was interviewed for a Parkett magazine article by Sheena Wagstaff. At Calle’s request the interview took place at the Gardner in front of Jan Vermeer’s 1658–60 painting “The Concert, one of Calle’s favorite paintings. Later that March, the painting became one of the 13 works stolen from the museum. Wagstaff later jokingly hinted that perhaps Calle was responsible for the theft. This suggestion spurred Calle to consider creating a project focused on the Gardner’s stolen works. (Continued on page 6)

Company in the Fourth Regiment second Brigade and seventh Division of the militia of this Commonwealth comprehending the County of Worcester.” This may be Captain Elijah Putnam (17611825), who fought in the Revolution and had been born in Salem Village. If so, his great-grandfather could have been Thomas Putnam of witch trials fame. Locally, it is believed that Elijah Putnam moved to Tioga County, Pa., and is buried

“Sophie Calle: Last Seen” (Continued from page 5)

While standing in front of the empty spaces on the museum walls where works were once hung, Calle asked curators, guards, conservators, and other museum staff members what they remembered of the missing pieces. Calle used text from the interviews and the photographic images to create a visual meditation on absence and memory, as well as a reflection on the emotional power works of art hold on their viewers.

In 2012, the Gardner invited Calle to revisit her “Last Seen…” project, which had never been viewed in Boston. Since Calle’s 1991 work in the museum, the empty frames that once held the absent works had been reinstalled in the galleries, literally framing the emptiness. In creating her new project, “What Do You See?,” Calle once again questioned people in the museum’s Dutch Room, but this time she did not mention the missing paintings to

there. Again, more research is welcomed. The appointment, with seal and Hancock’s famous signature with usual flourish, is offered at $7,500. Early Owego is honored to be able to share these important historical documents with our friends and colleagues. Since opening on Valentine’s Day in 2013, Early Owego has doubled in size and scope, now presenting 21,000 square feet of space

dedicated to the offerings of over 90 dealers in antiques and collectibles of many kinds. She asked each viewer to respond to what they saw before them. “Last Seen…” was first shown at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh in 1991. Since then, it has been presented, in its entirety or in abridged form, at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Dartmouth College’s Hood Museum in Hanover, N.H.; Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Netherlands; the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland; the

A special mid-day treat, both days, will be an appearance by Dr. Crispus Rumex, local herbalist and “Snake Oil” salesman, who will offer potions and elixers aimed at warding off the glum of winter. those single-owner sales were held by Sotheby’s. A number of objects also came from the Himmelreich sales in the 1970s through Pennypacker’s. Walter Himmelreich was a wellknown dealer/collector in Lancaster County, Pa., who handled Pennsylvania German folk art. He had four sales at Pennypacker’s in 1958, 1971, 1973, and 1976. In next week’s issue there will be continued coverage of this sale with a report concentrating on the Pennsylvania German side of the collection, including the fraktur, redware, and Jacob Maentel portraits. There will also be a brief overview of the other Americana Week sales. To recap, huge prices were achieved by a select number of private collectors. It was an extraordinary high profile collection from a high profile astute collector whom, in the end, happened to have fallen from his own “Visual Grace.” The captions tell more of the story from this important sale. The Ralph O. Esmerian Sale Antiques Show, which was going on at the same time, thought there was some carry over effect following the sale, reporting increased business at the show. According to one spectating collector, “Some very rare items were fought over by a select handful of individuals, each with a net worth of over a billion dollars. Also, some very nice things brought prices in line with what you would expect them to bring or less than what they previously sold for.” The Esmerian collection was formed slowly over decades. He cherry picked select iconic objects and had the resources to do it. Many items came from major sales, and he paid record prices. A number of the fraktur came from the Garbisch sales, held in 1974, through Sotheby’s. Carvings and redware came from the Wetzel sale in 1980 and also the Deyerle sale in 1995. Some highlights also came from the Fine sale in 1987. There were items from the well-known Hodgson and Wichman sales as well. All of

Two important revolutionary-era documents will take center stage as the Early Owego Antique Center celebrates its first anniversary. On display and for sale will be a diploma declaring William Barret of Virginia a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, signed by General George Washington and General Henry Knox at Mount Vernon on March 1st, 1787. It is believed that this is Captain William Barret (1756-1815) of Louisa and/or Frederick counties, Va. If so, he served in the regiment of the 3rd Continental (Virginia) Dragoons under the leadership of Colonel George Baylor. It is believed that his father, Chiswell Barret, served as a Captain as well. We hope this exhibition might spur more research into this fascinating family. Note, too, that 1787 was the year of the drafting of our Constitution and the founding of Owego, N.Y., as a settlement. The diploma is to be offered at $10,000. Also, an appointment of Elijah Putnam to the militia of Massachusetts, boldly

Two New Exhibits At The Mercer Museum

S829766

DELAWARE

In an era spanning the early twentieth century, through Depression-ridden times and a dust bowl, one form of revelry thrived, the circus. Now visitors to the Mercer Museum’s new exhibition, “Step Right Up! Behind the Scenes of the Circus Big Top, 1890-1965,” on view through Sunday, March 16, will get to explore another side of this thrilling spectacle and a history fraught with intrigue and majesty. In addition to “Step Right Up!,” the Mercer Museum will also open the hands-on exhibit, “Playing Together: Games.” The exhibit, developed by the Children’s Museum of Memphis, Tenn., invites visitors off all ages to play a multitude of games

that span generations and cultures. “Playing Together: Games” will run until Sunday, May 11. As one of America’s oldest theatrical traditions, the circus started as a European transplant in the late 1700s and was perfected in the United States by the likes of John Bill Ricketts and P.T. Barnum. By 1900, there were more than 100 circuses crisscrossing the country. The romanticized imagery, backstage stories, costumes and photographs featured in “Step Right Up!” reveal both the fantasy and reality of circus life, exploring the illusions that played to the imaginations of so many. The Mercer Museum, once the site for many circuses that visited Doylestown, will supplement

the exhibit with its own collection of Bucks County circus posters dating from the 1950s to the 1970s. To accompany the “Step Right Up!” exhibit, the Mercer Museum is collaborating with the Philadelphia School of the Circus Arts and with the exhibit’s curator, Timothy Noel Tegge. The Philadelphia School of the Circus Arts will perform their “Circus Aerialist Demonstrations” on Sundays: Feb. 2, 16 and March 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. The school will also host a “Circus Arts Workshop for Adults” on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and a “Circus Arts Workshop for Kids” on Saturday, March 15, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The presentation (Continued on page 15)

to be held Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, in New Hope, Pa. The sale of contents from Jacobs’ world-famous Washington Dolls’ House & Toy Museum in 2004 was a landmark event. The upcoming auction of the private collection Jacobs displayed in her home is expected to attract just as much attention. Most of Jacobs’ prized personal collection was featured in the book “The Small World of Antique Dolls’ Houses - Six Decades of Collecting,” one of five reference books she authored. Jacobs died in 2006 at the age of 87. “It is a tremendous honor for us to be auctioning such an important collection. Mrs. Jacobs was an internationally respected authority on antique dollhouses and singlehandedly defined the hobby for two generations of collectors,” said Noel Barrett. Additional auction details will be available soon at Noel Barrett’s website, www.noelbarrett.com.

Mercer Museum (Continued from page 7)

“The Circus - Past, Present and Future” takes place on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. All programs require registration except the Circus Aerialist Demonstrations. To register for the programs, call 215-348-9461. “Step Right Up! Behind the Scenes of the Circus Big Top, 1890-1965,” is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of the Mid-America Arts Alliance, and is generously sponsored by the Bucks County Foundation, Philadelphia School of the Circus Arts, and Eric Geoffrey. “Playing Together: Games” is divided into game categories of strategy, math, coordination and physical skills, and racing to the finish. The focal point of the exhibit is an oversized chessboard with giant game pieces. In one area, visitors invent their own games using various playing pieces, game boards and timers. “Senet” is one of the earliest racing games,

dating back over 3,000 years. It was discovered in the tombs of Egyptian pharohs and carved into roof tiles of ancient temples. The Mercer Museum will supplement the Games exhibit with a display of original board games from the 1800s to the 1900s from the Judy and Bud Newman collection. “Playing Together: Games” is generously sponsored by Judy and Bud Newman and Susan E. Kane. “Playing Together: Games” was created by the Children’s Museum of Memphis, a private, non-profit organization. The Mercer Museum is located at Pine Street and Scout Way in Doylestown, Pa.
