Gordon S. Converse Marches Forth With Tuesday, March 4, Auction In New Facility Gordon S. Converse & Company will march forth into the new year with a sale to be held on Tuesday, March 4th, in its new gallery located at 57 W. Lancaster Ave. in Malvern, Pa., situated between Routes 29 and 401

and not far from the People’s Light & Theater Company, where the firm had been holding auctions fairly regularly for the past several years. “We’ll be occupying around 4,500 square feet of space or about half of a spacious warehouse building that we actually occupied years ago,” said Gordon Converse.”We moved out before the new owner renovated the interior. It only recently became available again.” Converse snapped it up quickly, as the space is well on its way to serving as a fullservice auction gallery, with generous seating for previews and sales. The inaugural event will feature more than 300 lots of furniture pieces

(both antique and modern), fine art, clocks and watches, a selection of lamps, decorative accessories, and Asian arts. “We have many larger items that are suitable for a gallery sale,” Converse said, and he mentioned a French armoire probably from Normandy that is more than likely the biggest piece in the auction. He added, “There are also many items of interest to people who live in the immediate area, traditional antiques for mostly conservative people. It will be a good sale.” Furniture will include some very desirable Modern design pieces, such as a pair of wire chairs by Herman Miller with upholstered seat pads in blue and a “Space Station” coffee table with a fitted kidney-shaped glass top (64-by-33-inches) and a welded steel component base. Some antique furniture will also be sold, as will Asian furniture (mainly chairs and tables). Timepieces will feature two 18th-century English pocket watches, including a London watch in a sterling pair case, engraved-signed (John) Wood, with an inner case that’s hallmarked London, 1767. The parts are intact, including the fusee and chain. Also sold will be an early 19th-century New England banjo clock, 32.5

inches tall, with wood turned finial and brass side arms. The fine arts category will have much to offer, beginning with an oil portrait by William Barraud (18101850), titled “Gypsy and Fairy” and depicting the two Charles spaniel dogs of England’s Lord Methuen. The work is signed and dated. Barraud’s work was exhibited at the Royal Academy over 50 times. Veering from British royal dogs to American “Dumpster Diving,” a lifesized sculpture made from found objects by the noted Philadelphia sculptor Leo Sewell (b. 1945), titled “Seated Man,” will be offered. Sewell is a member of the so-called “Dumpster Divers,” whose artwork is fashioned from everyday objects of plastic, metal and wood. Sewell’s creations can be seen in over 40 museums. Also sold will be a 50-by42-inch abstract interpretation of the seasons by Anne E. Lisette Boysen, a Philadelphia

artist who passed away in 2011 and whose artwork was featured prominently in a prior Converse auction in November 2012. The painting, titled “Seasons Deux,” is from Ms. Boysen’s music series. Her art is in many corporate and private collections. Other expected top lots slated to cross the auction block include a carved marble bust of Augustus Caesar wearing cuirass armor, 32 inches in height and mounted

on a round marble base; an imposing ceramic lion, about 42 inches long, showing a reclining lion with polychrome glaze; and a 79-inchtall marble and bronze fountain, comprising a massive round variegated marble tub supporting a cast bronze putti statue that supports another bronze casting of putti. For further information, call 610-722-9004 or visit www.Auctionsat Converse.com.

I still remember, but sadly have since lost, the wonderful Chessie calendar of the porter pulling the covers up over the sleeping cat in a Pullman car. Corny…sure…but a piece of nostalgia that still haunts me. Oh, an interesting sidelight to all of this: numerous collectors who are looking for high quality paintings of trains have approached me over the years. Boy…they are hard to find. Anyone care to offer some ideas why? Not talking amateur or folk art works but professionally trained artist works showing trains.

It’s really fascinating how long after the consolidation, reconstitution, and disappearance of America’s great train lines, there is still incredible loyalty to specific lines. In my family, we are Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) folks. For me it was going to bed as a wee boy to the sound of the Broadway Limited coming into Harrisburg. Daughter Jane loves the PRR because it not only is about her hometown, but she also thinks that the china, silver and décor is pretty cool. Out here in the West, the loyalty is to the old Santa Fe (Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe - ATSF). Yes, the Union Pacific and Denver and Rio Grande have their followers but the ATSF is still where folks’ hearts lie. As a

the maker but rather in the back stamp. That little inked mark on the reverse that would say “Made for the PRR” or some variant thereof. For a collector, that means the piece was made for the PRR as opposed to being a production piece that may have been railroad used or possibly used by a local hotel, etc. Another interesting area is the calendar prints produced by the railroads and distributed to their customers. Here it’s a case not only of railroad loyalty but also artist collectibility. For the PRR collector, it is unlikely that you will ever find a real Grif Teller painting, so the prints are your best way to connect to railroad art. Here in New Mexico, there are the ATSF calendars featuring art produced by E.I. Couse of Taos. You can find original Couse paintings but the prices are often fairly high so the calendars are as close as most will get. Again, the irony is that the calendars were made and distributed by the railroads in large quantities and yet the prices have always been

sometime collector of train china, silver and décor, it does fascinate me how the market really bears this out. I bought some wonderful Union Pacific Railroad china recently at prices that were quite reasonable and conversely have been blown out of the water on basic patterns of the Santa Fe. It’s the company loyalty that is still so strong. Daughter Jane is certainly that way. She likes the Santa Fe and their fabled Super Chief, but her heart and collecting passion rests with the PRR. As someone who is relatively new to train memorabilia, it is as big a minefield in some respects as Chinese prints or high grade U.S. coins. The irony is that much of the train china and memorabilia was produced by large commercial/industrial firms in significant quantities. Thus, there are huge numbers of pieces on the market. So how come two identical pieces of commercial Pennsylvania Railroad china have dramatically different prices? Well, the answer is not in the design or shape or even necessarily

Rare 1974 Aluminum Penny Discovered An aluminum 1974-D penny, said to be one of only a few in existence and one of only 10 minted in Denver, Colo., was stored in a desk drawer for 30 years by a man who had inherited his father’s coin collection. When the man moved from Denver to California last year, he decided to sell the collection to a coin shop. The owner of the shop identified the aluminum penny as rare and estimated its value at $250,000. The plan is to auction the penny in April (Heritage Auctions of Dallas, Texas, will handle the sale), with the dealer and owner splitting the profit. Stories of these pennies have circulated for years. A few aluminum pennies minted in Philadelphia in 1974 were shown to members of Congress and others for approval, but the plan to circulate aluminum pennies

Some say the pennies probably would be considered government property and could be seized by the Secret Service. One of the pennies is in the Smithsonian’s collection. The 1974 aluminum penny is not to be confused with the 1943 zinc-coated steel penny made to save copper during World War II.
