Toy Buyers Who Liked Part One Will Love Part Two Of The Max Berry Toy And Bank Collection The March 27 And 28 Sale At Bertoia’s Will Include Tremendously Rare Antique Mechanical Banks

n describing what awaits bidders on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, when Bertoia Auctions presents part two of Washington attorney Max N. Berry’s antique toy and bank collection, gallery associate and auction coordinator Rich Bertoia offered an analogy from the motion-picture world. “When they do a sequel in Hollywood, it’s never as good as the original, but the follow-up to part one of Max’s collection, which we auctioned last November, will be a blockbuster,” he said. The auction of just over 500 lots is devoted exclusively to selections from Berry’s extraordinary lifetime assemblage of rare mechanical banks, early American tin and horsedrawn toys, as well as an enviable subcollection of bell toys and penny toys. Additionally, the lineup will be peppered with other toys that captured Berry’s fancy

over the years, like handpainted German tin toys, a Mickey Mouse Hurdy Gurdy and other comic character rarities. “If it appealed to Max, he bought it, but it had to be something really special for that to happen,” said Bertoia. Almost 200 mechanical banks are entered in the March event, many of which come with provenance from legendary bank collections. Some are of a caliber so high they don’t show up at auction more than once in 20 or so years. “This will be one of those very unusual sales where even advanced collectors can find some of those near-apocryphal banks that have eluded them for so long,” said Bertoia. A top highlight is a Stevens mechanical bank depicting an AfricanAmerican and a watermelon, one

of only three known to either Bertoia’s or the experts who were called in to assess and catalog the collection (Oliver Clark, Russ Harrington and Mike Caffarella). The bank was formerly held in the Stan Sax collection and will be auctioned with a $225,000$300,000 estimate. Another high-profile bank is Berry’s Jerome Secor Freedman’s Bank, which has a rich trail of provenance, starting with its purchase in 1939 from dealers in Mexico. The buyer,
Company president and CEO Edwin H. Mosler Jr. After Mosler, the bank’s next owner was Stanley P. Sax, whose collection was auctioned by Bertoia’s in 1998. It was at that auction that Max Berry acquired the bank, and it instantly became one of his most treasured possessions. It is cataloged in the March 27 and 28 auction with a presale estimate of $150,000-$200,000. All existing receipts and other written provenance will convey with the bank. Other top-notch cast-iron banks set to cross the auction block include a Santa-themed Zig-Zag bank, a possibly unique survivor of cast-iron, tin and cloth that Bertoia described as having “a very clever action. A red-version Mikado bank is expected to sell for upward of $75,000, while an Organ Grinder and Bear, possibly the only extant example with a movable arm on the grinder, is estimated at $10,000$12,000. Three extremely desirable banks made of lead are found in the Berry collection, including two designed by Charles A. Bailey: A Chinaman in Rowboat, estimate $80,000-$90,000 and a Cat and Mouse in beautiful condition. A third lead rarity, patented in 1905 but of unknown manufacture, is the Blacksmith bank. It will be offered together with a 1940 photo of its designer, Ohioan Fred Plattner, then age 80, seated and holding the bank. An array of wonderful tin banks includes an Empire Cinema, $15,000-$20,000; a colorful, handpainted William Weeden Ding Dong Bell, $60,000-$75,000; and two more Saalheimer & Strauss Mickey Mouse banks that complete the coveted four-bank series that was introduced during last November’s sale. Horse-drawn cast-iron toys include several variations of Spyder Phaetons, by Hubley and Kenton, respectively, that typify luxury auto travel of the early 20th century. The selection also includes an elegant Pratt & Letchworth Barouche, $10,000-$12,000; a fleet of Hubley Circus wagons and bandwagons; a Kyser & Rex Cage Wagon with a bear, lion and other animal figures, $8,000-$10,000; and a very rare Kenton Uncle Sam nodder horse-drawn toy, $6,000$8,000. A 28-inch-long Pratt & Letchworth Caisson drawn by four horses is the only example known to Bertoia’s. “It’s in jaw-dropping condition,” said Bertoia. “We expect it to sell above $50,000.” Max Berry’s fondness for American cast-iron bell toys was always common knowledge amongst collectors. “His is one of the most complete collections of its type, and it includes a number of toys with amusing themes,” said Bertoia. The collection’s early A m e r i c a n

One was a copy of Adventure Comics #40 (first appearance of the character Sandman, considered a rare book). It went for $25,990 (against a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$40,000). The other was a copy of Action Comics #23, the first appearance of Lex Luthor (Superman’s nemesis). The example, estimated at $5,000-$10,000,

our new facility,” said Weiss (the company was displaced from its previous gallery in Oceanside because of Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012). “Aside from the Batmans and other comics, which obviously did well, we were excited to handle such a fine selection of fresh merchandise from so many great consignors.” In all, around 700 lots came under the gavel in an auction that grossed more than $800,000. About 65 people attended the sale in person, while many more participated online through Proxibid.com. Phone bidding was also quite brisk (especially because of all the snow), and a good number of absentee bids were also fielded. “It was an all-around great sale,” said Weiss. The following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include a 13 percent buyer’s premium. An original animation concept painting for the 1959 film “Sleeping Beauty,” drawn by the noted Disney artist Eyvind Earle, changed hands for $9,605. The piece was in fine condition. comic was the top lot of the auction. It wasn’t a new auction record for a copy of Batman #1, but it was a record for the comic graded at 7.5. And considering it was only estimated to bring $100,000-$150,000 to begin with, the final hammer price came as a pleasant surprise. “It sold to two men in the room who were delighted to have scored such a rare comic in any condition,” stated Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. The two buyers turned out to be Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo, the owners of Metropolis Collectibles, a firm that made the news last year when they paid the most ever for a comic book: $3.2 million, for a CGC-certified 9.0 copy of Action Comics #1 (the first comic book appearance of Superman). The men expressed confidence that the value of the Batman #1 will only escalate. By contrast, a copy of Batman #2, from summer 1940, was also offered, with a far superior grade of 9.2 out of 10. But because it was #2, not #1, it was considered less desirable, it brought $39,550 (within the pre-sale estimate

One final note as well: spend some time on your own family history when it comes to the Civil War. For years, I knew that my grandfather had been very proud of two relatives who fought in the war. So this past year, I spent some time using the myriad of online resources that are out there to research my Civil War ancestors. What I discovered profoundly changed my view on the war and particularly on Gettysburg. Two of my distant relatives, who did not know each other, were together probably less than a mile apart on July 1, 1863. Both survived the battle, although one later died at Andersonville, but the realization to me was that had things been different, then my life and my upbringing would have been vastly different. History is about identity. It is about who and what we are. It does not repeat itself, but it defines who we are today.

back in 1963 when one can really argue that the modern fascination with the Civil War began. Or perhaps it was the making of the modern movie “Gettysburg where Ted Turner brought to life the battle for a whole new generation of history buffs. I still remember judging a local contest for National History Day (a great program, by the way) when “Gettysburg came out. Man, I saw more exhibits, papers and presentations on the battle than you can imagine. The end result, however, was an excitement about history that stills lives today. Over the last several years, we have been celebrating the 150th anniversary of the war. In 2013, we had the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. This year, it is the anniversary of the end of the war and the death of Lincoln. Many celebrations are being planned, and I would really encourage readers to become involved.

This year, 2015, marks the end of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary celebration. As a fellow lover of history, even if you are not a Civil War buff, one cannot help but appreciate the significance of this anniversary. The Civil War was one of the defining moments in American history and one that is so important for us to remember. Having grown up in Southcentral Pennsylvania, for me the story of the Civil War was encapsulated in the Battle of Gettysburg. The events of that hot July in 1863 would forever change the course of our national identity. Gettysburg is about the
defeat of the Southern Army and the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. It’s also about the magnificent language of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. As an aside, try and find a child and take them to the National Cemetery at Gettysburg and have them read, out load, the Gettysburg Address. I promise that you will find it a compelling moment! Gettysburg is also about the events that happened there in the subsequent 150 years. It is the reunions of blue and gray soldiers during the late 19th century when Reconciliation began to heal the wounds of the war. It was also about the Pennsylvania National Guard training there in the early 1900s to try and understand and recreate the battle (long before the modern re-enactors). And finally, it is about the lessons of today in remembering the causes and results of that war. Then there is the story of the 100th anniversary celebration

SHOWS & MARKETS Pook & Pook To Hold An International Auction Spring Three-Auction Run Will Begin On March 28 that created the impetus for his expansion into European pewter. On the antique show circuit from 1982 onwards, his expertise in European pewter allowed him to carve out a niche market as America’s specialist in European pewter. After identifying the makers and locations of his acquisitions, he wrote letters to European museums to fill in the gaps of his pewter knowledge. Fogel devoted years to researching, identifying, and documenting hundreds of European pewter items that were previously unidentified. After decades of hunting, collecting, and dealing, Fogel has decided to part with the most significant items of his personal collection. The collection includes examples from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, and England. A German Gothic pewter libation cup, circa 1450, boasts zoomorphic embellishments surrounding the base (est. $3,000-$4,000). The auction features the European pewter collection of Allan Fogel, a selection of European antiques, and hundreds of Asian objects. Over 150 pieces of European pewter will get the International Auction started. Pewter was wildly popular in Europe starting around the Middle Ages and remained so until it was replaced by porcelain. While no longer popular as a vessel for food, pewter continues to retain a unique decorative quality that appeals to both collectors and designers alike. All of the European pewter offered on March 28 is from the collection of Allan Fogel of Silver Spring, Md. The acquisition of two 19thcentury pewter mugs began Fogel’s collection over 40 years ago. While British pewter is simple and understated, it was the enchanting European variety

French and are sought after by corkscrew collectors. As the corkscrew collector will usually outbid the general silver collector, many of these pieces are gravitating to the specialist corkscrew auctions conducted by Collector Corkscrews.com. The 18th century Dutch sheathed pieces are always in demand. They tend to have detailed figural designs and often incorporate a smoking function such as a pipe tamper or pricker. The handle may be a stylized lion or fish. The English silver pieces from the same period tend to be simpler in design and perhaps more elegant. An example is the Georgian silver folding bow corkscrew hallmarked for London 1784. The most typical English silver piece of this era is the “T” style sheathed pocket corkscrew marked Samuel Pemberton with an ivory handle. An example sold at a previous sale for $1,262. The 18th century English silver pieces may be combined with some other function valued by the travelling gentleman. These English combination items are of high quality but were plain and functional rather than decorative and usually unmarked. In recent Collector Corkscrews.com auctions, there have been several silver nutmeg graters with a nutmeg housed in the corkscrew hanAn 18th-century The Dutch farmer with two dle. horses corkscrew sold for unmarked English nutmeg grater sold in the previous $2,370.

While collectible corkscrews are typically functional items made of wood, steel or brass, they can be decorative and made of more valuable materials, such as gold, ivory or, most often, silver. The best silver pieces typically date from the 18th or early 19th centuries and are smaller “pocket” corkscrews that were used by travelling gentlemen or for desk display. The travelling corkscrew was usually protected by a sheath and often folded. This protected both the corkscrew’s delicate “worm” from damage and the carrier from injury. While the handle, shaft and sheath may be silver, the working corkscrew itself will be still made of hardened steel. Such silver pieces are typically Dutch, English or sometimes

otherworldly equivalent of “911.” The connection of a particular saint to a particular cause often proves a headscratcher. Take Clare of Assisi. Clare is the patron saint of television, but her existence predated TV by centuries. The rationale: one Christmas Eve, a bedridden Clare was forced to miss Midnight Mass. Thanks to divine intervention, however, she saw and heard the entire service, just as if she were in actual physical attendance. And no station breaks, either. Now, you’d think a patron saint would be an easy thing to remember. But just to make life simpler, threedimensional forget-me-nots were devised in the form of religious figurines. Generally fashioned of ceramic and particularly popular during the mid-20th century, these figurines kept favorite saints close at hand, and close to the heart. In the world of religious figurines, Saint Francis of Assisi easily wins his halo. During the 1940s and ’50s,

In the litany of heavenly helpers, Magnus is listed as the patron saint of “Caterpillars, protection against.” Skiers have a patron saint (Bernard of Montjoux); So do skaters (Lidwina). And the patron saint of swans is Hugh of Lincoln (who knew swans even needed a patron saint?). From “A” (“Abdominal pains:” Saint Erasmus) to “Z” (“Zoos:” Saint Francis of Assisi, pretty much a given), there are patron saints for practically every activity and malady imaginable. particularly well-designed piece is the 1888 U.S. patented roundlet of Leroy Fairchild with an ingenious closure mechanism and high quality machining in a range of patterns. A Fairchild “pineapple” pattern recently sold for $500. While silver is the usual medium for decorative corkscrews, at the top of the market a gold piece will occasionally appear and command very high prices. Two gold and agate pieces in a recent sale, both probably French
and early 19th century, reveal a marked contrast in style. One is much more elaborate and expensive than the other. (One with detailed gold cagework sold for $21,000 and one with a gold sheath and faceted agate handle brought $5,500.) CollectorCorkscrews.com, operating since 2008 by volunteer corkscrew collectors, has sold over 7,000 corkscrews for around $5 million. The next online auction sale opens Friday, April 17. personal, but culturally divergent level, are the religious figurines known as Santos. These handcrafted wooden depictions of saints originated in Spain, making their way westward with the colonization of the New World. Far from home, early Spanish settlers in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines called on innate talents to create statuettes destined to grace homes and churches. The most readily available Santos figurines are mannequins, carved in full. There are also Santos busts; Santos cages (an attached metal cage below the carved bust

The native woods used for carved Santos of the 19th and early 20th centuries were not chosen for their durability; they were simply what was handy to local artisans. Paints were a mix of minerals and vegetable dyes, reapplied over the years as the initial coats faded. With the passage of time, wood has split, and paint has chipped. expanded. But even a delimbed, surface-ravaged Santos figurine of this era is a valuable commodity; examples fetch at least several hundred dollars at auction. From past to present, generations have called on the message of strength personal religious objects represent. During World War I, soldiers even used spent bullet casings as repositories for the tiniest of tiny religious figurines. They did so for inspiration for comfort, and for remembrance. The next time you’re at a yard sale and find yourself face-to-face with a flock of vintage religious figurines, why not pick out a favorite? Maybe a patron saint. How about that St. Magnus of Fussen? I hear he’s pretty handy around caterpillars. Donald-Brian Johnson is the co-author of numerous Schiffer books on design and collectibles, including “Postwar Pop,” a collection of his columns. Consignments Wanted For Our Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - June 2015 Touted as one of Julia’s finest fall toy, doll & advertising auctions in recent memory, the auction had all the makings for a blockbuster right from the start. Drawn fresh from three major collections, combined with select pieces from individuals from all over the United States, it was a nonstop parade of quality, condition, rarity, and diversity. With estimates that were realistic and conservative, bidders were treated to one spectacular piece after another. Combined with Julia’s expansive marketing program, their reputation for honest and fair dealing, and some of the finest catalogs in the industry, the results were phenomenal, setting a few world auction records along the way. When the final hammer fell, Julia’s tallied over $1.4 Million, nearly a half million dollars over the total presale estimate of approximately $935,000. We are now accepting quality consignments for our spring 2015 toy, doll & advertising auction. Whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us for a free consultation. described in the auction catalog as being of a type considered “one of the crown jewels in every U.S. martial collection,” said Bushing. Such firearms were made under special order from 1875 to 1885, and only for commissioned officers. “That Springfield rifle had never been fired. It ‘walked’ into a Chicago police supply shop, and after I found out about it, I drove to Chicago to check it over and make sure it was legit,” said Bushing. “It turned out to be the finest and earliest of its type in private hands. It was made during the second month of production.” The gun surpassed its high estimate at Morphy’s to sell for $13,200. Lot 898, a rare Sharps New Model 1859, was one of 2,000 such rifles issued in 1862 to Hiram Berdan’s 1st and 2nd Regiments of the U.S. Sharpshooters. Ely of Massachusetts, and Lot 275, a never-fired Model 1877 Lightning, also known as a “Shop Keeper” or “Sheriff’s Model.” Each of the guns realized $8,400. Commenting on the latter gun, Bushing said he believes the price paid for it at Morphy’s was “a world auction record for a blue Colt Lightning not associated with a famous person,” adding, “It was a ‘plain Jane’ gun that was shipped to Denver in 1886, when that part of the country was still the Wild West. It sat in a drawer for a hundred years, which explains its remarkable condition.” Bushing said the current market for antique, vintage and collectible guns is “on fire…Guns generate more
“I always reply that they’re associated with war, and American history is defined by wars, going all the way back. Even people who are opposed to guns can still appreciate their history and artistry. When I show people the beautiful workmanship, how even the insides of some guns are engraved like a Swiss watch, they understand. Guns are regarded as heirlooms. People may go through their house and get rid of clothing and furniture, but they’ll keep their guns to pass on to the next generation. Many collectors look for guns that they remember their fathers or grandfathers had,” said Bushing. Morphy’s next Firearms Auction is scheduled for Saturday, May 23.
