Noel Barrett To Auction Flora Gill Jacobs’ Personal Collection Of Dollhouses And Miniatures isionary collector, author and founder of the revered Washington Dolls’ House & Toy Museum, Flora Gill Jacobs (1918-2006) was a potent and influential force in the hobby of dollhouse and miniature collecting. Her devotion to the famed Washington, D.C., museum that played host to the children of presidents and diplomats helped bolster the dollhouse and miniatures hobby during the last quarter of the 20th century. Inside the museum, which attracted some 20,000 visitors annually, were breathtaking displays of miniature residences, each one painstakingly decorated with luxe furnishings and tiny accessories. In 2004, Noel Barrett auctioned the museum’s collection under instruction from Mrs. Jacobs. Now, on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, collectors will have the opportunity to bid on the items Flora Gill Jacobs chose for her personal collection that was displayed in her elegant suburban residence. As before, Noel Barrett Auctions has been chosen to conduct the sale. “What is different about the April auction is that we’re selling the dollhouses and furnishings separately. At the museum sale, we left the dollhouses intact,” said Noel Barrett, owner of Noel Barrett Auctions. “We’ve organized it so

for such a small amount, most auctioneers would not be willing to piece this collection out. For instance, his loose vintage action figure collection would be stripped of its rare pieces and sold as one lot. The same would apply to the mid-grade comic book collection and the various video game collections as well. When all was said and done I estimate the full value of this collection to have an insurance value between $30,000 and $35,000 and a fair conservative resale value in the vicinity of about $25,000 to $28,000. When I discussed my appraisal and the reasoning behind it with him, he disagreed. I was used to dealing with individuals who have a tendency to over value their items all the time, but much to my surprise he thought it was worth much less! We spent well over an hour talking about how I came up with the assigned values I gave. Dumbfounded, he thanked me and told me he had no plans to sell at present time, but the collection would

and very few were ever bought new. This collection was special to my friend in that he was able to assemble almost all of it from flea market and yard sale finds. There was not one known auction purchase or eBay-bought item noted in the lot. He took pride in explaining to me that he assembled this collection with what he referred to as his “fun money.” He estimates that he never paid more than $20 for any of the items contained within his collection. Unfortunately, the process in which he accumulated these items also meant that having any kind of written record to document the cost of the collection was not readily available, and there were no written records detailing what any of the individual items cost. That being said, if he ever chose to sell this collection most of it would need to be sold on eBay or in lots to maximize the resale value. Only a few of the choice items would ever appeal to an auction gallery and since most of these items retailed

S688720

Recently I was asked to help itemize and appraise the value of a close friend’s collection of vintage toys, pop culture collectibles, and video games. As someone who has a lot of experience in this realm I agreed to assist in formulating an accurate value and assessment. Unlike the collection of an experienced collector-investor, my friend’s collection consisted of items that have as much sentimental value as they do financial value. The collection consisted of literally thousands of objects, as my friend tends to value quantity over quality where I tend to value quality over quantity. We each collect in different ways and for different reasons, but we both share a true love of the objects in question. Going into this I knew this appraisal would take quite a bit of time, and to be quite honest, I was not looking forward to it. Just as I expected, everything was unorganized and stored in a combination of plastic bins

and crushed cardboard boxes that had experienced moisture damage over the years of being haphazardly stored. At the risk of upsetting my friend’s wife, I was not happy with her insistence that the collection be stored only in the basement of their home. After all, this is what has led to a lot of collections becoming damaged and abandoned throughout the years. I calculate that the appraisal, documentation, and reorganization of the full collection took well over 20 hours of my time. Due to other commitments and the fact that both of us have demanding careers this process occurred over a one to two month period. Like most collections of this nature, the collection consisted of mostly common items in good to excellent condition with several rare items sprinkled in and the vast majority of items valued at well under $50 each. The most expensive item was valued at around $1,000. What makes this collection unique was that most of these items were not bought at the retail level

I was, at the very least, able to ensure that the items were sorted and packed much better than before, but had to ask who he had the collection insured with. As suspected, the collection was not insured at all. It is unfortunate but this is a common theme that is occurring at an alarming rate among younger collectors. A lot of my generation (Generation X and younger) seem to view their collections in financial terms, but very few actually have them insured. Registration forms for the convention and cost details, as well as membership benefits and details, are available on the Association website at www.acna.us or from the ACNA office, 800-287-7127 (where the phone is always answered by a live person). The event will close on Tuesday evening with a dinner, followed by the always popular auction. The ACNA asks everyone to bring an antique and/or collectible to be donated for the auction (a receipt will be provided for tax purposes). The ACNA chose the dates and the location of Austin due to its close proximity to the world renowned 20+ antique shows in Round Top, Texas. For those dealers who have never had a chance to check out the Round Top shows, this is a way they can make one trip and enjoy two worthwhile events. The ACNA was formed in 1991 as the Antiques & Collectibles Dealer Association and has evolved to the ACNA to provide personalized services for shop owners, mall owners, show promoters and private collectors, as well as all levels of dealers. The association offers an array of services/benefit programs to its members, including its most popular benefit - property and liability insurance coverage for shop owners, mall owners, mall dealers, show dealers, auctioneers, estate sale dealers, show promoters, and individual collectors. They also have educational seminars, a

estate was still in probate. It resurfaced at an auction house in Alexandria, Va., in 2012, with the story that it had been found at a flea market in West Virginia. In January 2014, a federal judge granted ownership of the Renoir painting back to the museum. Details about the theft and where the painting was for 60 years remain a mystery. The BMA is located at 10 Art Museum Drive at North Charles and 31st streets, three miles north of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in the neighborhood of Charles Village. Also on view is an oil sketch by Georges Seurat that May purchased from the same gallery on the same day as the Renoir painting and a selfportrait by Edgar Degas that was acquired by the BMA with funds received from the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and Saidie May’s bequest following the claim of the Renoir’s theft. Examples of May’s own artwork and that of her companion and fellow artist Alfred Jensen are presented as well. Renoir’s “On The Shore Of The Seine” is a 5.5-by-9inch oil-on-linen painting created by Renoir in about 1879 featuring the bright colors and expressive brushwork that exemplify the artist’s high Impressionist style and technique during that period. The small painting was purchased by Saidie May and her second husband, Herbert May, from the Parisian art

g a l l e r y Bernheim-Jeune in November 1925. The couple installed the work in their New York apartment. Following the couple’s divorce, May retained the painting and later gave it to the BMA on long-term loan in 1937. May died in the spring of 1951, bequeathing her entire collection to the BMA. The painting was stolen from an exhibition in the galleries in November of 1951, while her

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is pleased to announce that PierreAuguste Renoir’s painting “On the Shore of the Seine” (circa 1879) will return to public view in a special exhibition on view Sunday, March 30, to Sunday, July 20. “The Renoir Returns” exhibit reunites the diminutive painting that was stolen 63 years ago with more than 20 artworks from the extraordinary collection of Saidie May. This visionary Baltimore, Md., collector purchased the Renoir in 1925 and gave the BMA masterworks by Juan Gris, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, and others that will be featured in the exhibition along with archival documents. “We are thrilled to welcome this charming painting back to the museum, to reintroduce it to the people of Baltimore, and to reunite it with the many masterpieces from Saidie May’s collection,” said BMA director Doreen Bolger. “As we celebrate the BMA’s 100th anniversary this year, we are particularly excited to honor May’s legacy as one of the BMA’s most generous donors.” Other highlights of the two-gallery exhibition organized by senior curator of European Painting and Sculpture Katy Rothkopf include masterworks such as Piet Mondrian’s “Composition V” (1927), Paul Klee’s “Traveling Circus”

A book titled “Peter Montelius: Teacher and Printer, Printer and Teacher,” featuring broadsides and printed materials of Peter Montelius (17911859), is now available. Peter Montelius is known for printing a variety of German-language broadsides, many of which have graphic images. He taught and printed in Reamstown, Lancaster County, Pa., from about 1810 to 1813 and again from 1818 to 1823, after which time he moved to Union County until 1830 and then to Northumberland County, where he lived the remainder of his life.

Although most of Montelius’ print work was created in Northumberland County, it was during his experimental years while in Reamstown where his broadsides show the most variety and charm. His works suggest he was printing for classroom instruction rather than as a commercial printer. Consequently, most editions of his broadsides are rare, for the numbers he printed of any single edition were limited. The 241-page softcover “Peter Montelius: Teacher and Printer, Printer and Teacher” illustrates in black

and white 88 examples of Montelius broadsides or broadsides that according to oral tradition have been attributed to him or show his influence in design. Also included are seven broadsides printed by Peter’s sons, Timothy and Marcus. “Peter Montelius: Teacher and Printer, Printer and Teacher,” authored by Patricia Earnest Suter, is available from Russell D. Earnest Associates, P.O. Box 1132, Clayton, DE 19938. The cost per book is $39.95, plus $5 shipping. Readers are invited to visit www.earnestarchives

A 10-acre farmette in Lancaster County, Pa., located across from Sight & Sound Theatres, will be sold at auction on Saturday, April 12. Property owners Elvin and Jane Siegrist bought the property in 1962 and are now downsizing to a smaller property. Part of the original log house was built in the 1730s. The log beams are exposed in the living room, giving the home a historic, yet warm appeal. A barn and other outbuildings are included in the sale. The property borders the Pequea Creek and features fenced pastures most recently used for grazing sheep. In addition to the property, the Siegrists will be auc-

tioneering off a 52-year collection of antiques and farm implements, including three John Deere tractors and a 1928 Reo sedan car. Miller & Siegrist Auctioneers, which began 36 years ago as a partnership between Alvin Miller and Elvin Siegrist will be conducting the auction. The auction company is now a second generation family business. Rhonda Nissley (Elvin’s daughter) and Mike Miller (Alvin’s son) are running the business, which offers professional auction services for real estate and estates. Prints, Paintings And Sculptures By Early African-American Artists Set Auction Records At Swann Galleries On February 13, Swann Galleries conducted an auction devoted to works by AfricanAmerican artists active in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Titled “Shadows Uplifted,” the auction featured paintings, sculptures, drawings and fine prints by artists who emerged from the shadows of academic and genre painting and defined a new visual culture during the Harlem Renaissance and WPA eras. The top lot in the sale was William H. Johnson’s “On a John Brown Flight,” a circa 1942-45 color pochoir and screenprint that brought $81,250, which was a record for any print by the artist at auction. Also setting records were Joseph Delaney’s “Harlem, Sunday Morning,” oil-on-board, 1942, which achieved an artist record price of $40,000 and Dox Thrash’s

“Wandering Boy,” watercolor, circa 1940s, a record for a watercolor by this artist known for his prints, selling for $13,750. Bringing $70,000 was “Coal Breakers,” Hughie LeeSmith’s first known socialrealist oil painting, a rare example of his work from the late 1930s and one of his earliest paintings to come to auction. Two female artists who had works appearing at auction for the first time were Warwick, R.I., artist Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, whose “Untitled (Head)” wood sculpture, circa early 1930s, sold for

$35,000, and Pauline Powell Burns, a granddaughter of a slave from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello who became an accomplished painter. Burns’ “Violets,” oil-on-cardstock, circa 1890, sold for $13,750. Other significant works by women were Beulah Ecton Woodard’s “African Woman,”

glazed terra cotta, circa 193738, $18,750, and Augusta Savage’s best-known work, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in white metal with copper patina, circa 1939, which sold for $23,750. Another sculpture of note was William E. Artis’ “Michael (Head of a Boy),” cast bronze, circa 1950, which sold for $25,000. Moving into the modern

era were two pieces by Chicago artist Eldzier Cortor: “Tête-à-Tête,” oil-on-canvas, 1934, which brought $35,000, and “Untitled (Nude Seated on a Bed),” pen, ink, pastel and wash, circa 1948, $27,500; as well as James A. Porter’s well-known “SelfPortrait,” oil-on-canvas, circa 1935, $18,750; Hale Woodruff’s “Portrait of a Girl,” oil-on-board, circa

1935-40, $27,500; Palmer Hayden’s “Colorado Honky Tonk,” oil-on-canvas, circa 1940-49, $20,000; and Norman Lewis’s “Untitled (Abstract Composition),” oilon-panel, 1947, $20,000. Swann Galleries, Inc., is located at 104 E. 25th St. in New York. For additional information, visit www.swann galleries.com.
