Unique Collection Showcases Japanese Art Deco thoroughly Japanese expression of the first truly global design style – Art Deco – came into being in the 1920s and 30s, when the luxe and the low, the old and the new, and the East and the West were shaken and stirred into a unique cultural cocktail. This phenomenon is being considered by the Gallery at Japan Society in New York City in “Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945.” The exhibit brings together fine examples of the sophisticated craftsmanship and design one associates with Japan – in ceramics, lacquerware, glass, metalwork, jewelry, textiles, sculpture, painting, and lithography – contextualized by colorful ephemera and goods mass-produced for the modern home. Some 200 works are drawn from the Levenson Collection, the world’s finest private holding of Japanese art and design from the Art Deco period. The collection of Bob and Mary Levenson was built around a passion for the striking range of

Slowly, over time, additional pieces came to light that

objects that were created in Japan at the height of the Art Deco period. Mary Levenson reminisces about the genesis of the collection. “In 1980 a poster of the three-eyed goblin Mitsume Kozo triggered Bob’s imagination and sent him on a voyage of collecting Japanese art for more than three decades. Bob began collecting netsuke, the beautifully carved toggle that helps support an inro, originally a tobacco or medicine pouch, on a man’s obi, or kimono sash. Very shortly, he became enamored with additional aspects of Japanese culture, and this fascination spread to woodblock prints, cloisonné, and other wonders created by master Japanese craftsmen. The art

fueled his interest and were in turn added to the collection. Gradually Japanese art from the deco era began to lure other collectors in Japan and the West.” All bangs, bob, and bright red lips, the modern girl, or moga, is undoubtedly the star of the show. As the primary subject as well as the primary consumer of Art Deco design in Japan, the moga appears on a vast majority of the works featured in “Deco Japan.” “Beginning in the early 20th century, Japanese women began to enter the work world in force, as typists shop assistants, office

Egyptian art, Chinese antiquity, and horse racing. The intricate diamond shapes of a cloisonné vase, the dots and swirls animating a glass bowl, and the hint of a metal mechanical spring in the autumnal cattails of a bronze tea ceremony screen. These and other visual riffs suggest what enormous pleasure the artists of the period must have derived from their new and inventive manipulation of form and pattern. Near the beginning of the show, visitors encounter a man’s kimono with a skyscraper motif and a delicately lacquered silver and gold box with a leaping

Japanese painting lent itself to art deco streamlining. The taste for the exotic is evident in many of the 20 sculptures (okimono) on view in the exhibition. Here, exotic and mythological beasts like lions, bulls, unicorns, and dragons are realized in a variety of ways, from a massproduced powder blue ceramic bear to a pair of masterful silver and gold figures of paper cranes no larger than the palm of the hand! In sharp distinction to the café culture values illustrated in one of the most expressive works in the exhibit – a color woodblock of the modern girl with a cocktail in a café - a good number of the featured works convey a militant nationalism. A phoenix on the lid of a round container, a ferocious dragon cast in bronze, and a heron snatching a fish in its beak atop a lacquered box. These subjects would have been clearly understood as symbols of imperial prestige and the will to power that characterized the years preceding and d u r i n g World War II. “Deco Japan’s” last room features examples of luxury commodities and mass-produced goods conceived for the modern “culture house.” A pair of lacquered vases with leaping hares created in 1942, a cubist-like sake flask in the shape of an Akita dog from the 1930s, a decorative cabinet, carpets and an extraordinary bronze table clock with a rabbit punding rice-cake on the moon which reimages a medieval Japanese tale, bringing the show to a close with a perfect pairing of tradition and modernity. The catalogue that accompanies “Deco Japan” is published by Art Services International . SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Are Sales A Good Thing? Peter Swift Seibert

So often in the trade, the idea of having a sale is akin to going out of business. Yes, it is certainly true that for many, to offer items on sale is to suggest that they need quick cash because they are on the verge of closing. Yet, sales are an important part of the life cycle of antiques collecting. As dealers we buy, clean, polish and prepare items for sale. We put a markup on them that is fair and also takes into account our ability to offer a 10-20% discount to clients, while still making a profit. Then we put it out there, whether at a flea market or in a gallery and see what happens. We might advertise the piece or arrange flowers in it. We might hold it for a big show or simply get it into the booth the day after we buy it. The bottom line

remains that we are there to sell merchandise. So what happens when it does not sell? That is the tough one, because in buying antiques each of us puts forth a bit of our own personality. We intellectually a n d emotion-

ally understand what an object is, then purchase it, and then get it “out there.” We hope that others will find the same level of appreciation that we do hence why some dealers only sell special treasures to people they know will appreciate them. But what happens when it just sits there? Well, you can be like some who simply wait until the right buyer comes

&

along. That’s okay if you don’t have much overhead and can afford to wait. In my opinion, it’s not a good way to deal. Sitting on something forever so that your clients come to regard it as an identifier for you is a bad idea. Do you really want to be remembered for the Dutch cupboard that you take to every show, hoping it will move. Do you want to be known for that overpriced toy train that you move from antique mall to antique mall? The trade knows, and remembers, and moving things from place to place does not help. I remember a nowdeceased dealer who would offer an item that he could not sell through an auction house, with the understanding that it would have a high reserve. Then when it did not sell, he took it up the road and put it

Consequently the impressed seal mark gives us no clues to its origins. From the nature of the clay used it seems probable that the flask was produced in one of the numerous studios that sprang up in Seto, near to Nagoya in Aichi Province. We valued it at $100 to $150.

This week we valued a Japanese Studio Pottery Tokkuri or Sake Flask. It’s of typical tapered baluster form, the whole covered in a celadon green glaze, and decorated to one side with a cherry blossom and maple leaf incised and highlighted in contrasting enamels. The mouth has an overglaze-red key-fret band, and the base has an impressed four character seal. It was made in the 1920s-1930s. In the early decades of the twentieth century the organized, commercial ceramic industry began to fragment and from it sprang innumerable individual craftsmen potters who gained their inspiration both from the traditional wares of Japan and the “novelty” of the Arts and Crafts

in another auction, with the same high reserve, and waited for it to sell. When it did not sell, he took it home and started moving it around coops and shows. Still, it did not sell. Finally it sold - when he died and the collection

shopping adventures with her mother, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, pearls, emeralds, and aquamarines all caught Chrissy’s eye. She began educating herself about jewelry from the Victorian era to the Art Deco period. After collecting for a few years, she

came up as an unreserved sale. A sad story. Having a sale is not a bad thing. It frees up cash to acquire new merchandise. More importantly, it clears the brain about what you have. Why didn’t it sell originally? Objectively stepping back and asking that question often provides useful infor-

mation about buying for the future. Finally, from a collector’s perspective, a dealer who has sales is one to watch. I want to be there when the prize export tea set goes on special. I will follow his web site, check out his booth, and be there ready to buy. Why? Because everyone likes a sale! 150 Q u Dealeality rs

industry. Today, these vases belong to four museums, including the Newark Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Trenton Museum Society (Ellarslie), and New Jersey State Museum. The example at Ellarslie was rediscovered and acquired only recently. (For more information on this vase, check out www.ellarslie.org/about/new s/vase.htm). In the 1930s, the company saw commercial advantage in making artwares again when it produced Art Deco-style vases and novelties along with its other products. The Symposium includes four speakers. David Conradsen, Curator of Decorative Arts & Design at the Saint Louis Art Museum,

will survey art ceramics shown at the St. Louis Fair in 1904. Collector Bob Cunningham will examine the history of the four vases. After lunch in the New Jersey State Museum galleries, which will give visitors an opportunity to look at the famous Trenton Vase, Ulysses Dietz, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Newark Museum, will discuss the exhibition history of Newark’s big vase from the time it entered the collection in the 1950s, exploring the nature of ceramic art as interpreted by one of the nation’s leading art museums. To finish the program, Tom Rago, author of Collector’s Guide to Trenton Potteries (Schiffer, 2001), will talk about the art wares produced in the 1930s and 1940s. A reception following the formal talks will

be held at Ellarslie, the Trenton City Museum, where this museum’s large vase is on view. The symposium is open to the public. The registration fee is $35 if paid by April 13. Members of the Potteries of Trenton Society, the Friends of the NJ State Museum, and the Trenton Museum Society may attend for $30, if paid in advance. Everyone who pays at the door will be charged $40. Registration includes all lectures, lunch, and the Ellarslie reception. A mail-in registration form may be downloaded and printed from POTS website: www.potteriesoftrenton.org; or interested parties may contact POTS President Patty Madrigal at (609) 695-0122 or president@potteriesoftrentonsociety.org.
