The Estate Of J. Jefferson And Anne Weiler Miller Pook & Pook Auction Will Be Held On April 25 ook & Pook, Inc. is honored to present the collection of Anne and J. Jefferson Miller II of Baltimore, Md., for auction on Saturday, April 25. The auction will start at 10 a.m. Jefferson Miller was a leading figure in the antiques community and a preeminent Americana scholar. His collection reflects his passion and dedication to the field.
P
honed his collecting interests with what he described as “training in connoisseurship, history of style and decoration, understanding of materials, construction techniques, craftsmanship and, in short, an education in the material culture of 17th-19th century America.” He was hired by the Smithsonian Museum of History and Technology, now the Museum of
This carved and painted fish plaque of a pickerel, circa 1900, is inscribed verso “Pickerel Weight 4 lbs 14 oz Carved and Painted by James Crawford.”
Prior to working with decorative arts, Miller served as a radio carrier for the U.S. Army during World War II. After stints in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, he was wounded in Cologne, earning a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Following the war, Miller received a Bachelor of Arts from John Hopkins University and a law degree from the University of Maryland. He practiced law at Frank, Bernstein, Conway & Goldman in Baltimore for seven years before serving as an assistant U.S. attorney. After a period as a successful attorney, Miller made an abrupt career shift and accepted an American decorative arts fellowship at the Winterthur Museum, where he This Pennsylvania sgrafitto redware charger, dated 1805 and initialed “AU” for potter Andrew Uhler, will be sold April 25.

American History, as a curator of ceramics and glass. Also highly involved in the decorative arts community, Anne Miller joined Jeff as a member of the American Folk Art Society, and the two played founding roles in the American Ceramics Circle. Jeff Miller also directed the Maryland Historical Society from 1984 to 1988 and served on committees at the Homewood House at Johns Hopkins, the Hampton National Historic Site in Towson, and the Maryland Council for the Humanities. This dedication translated into several decorative arts books, catalogs, and articles that are valuable references to students and collectors. In addition to being a historian, Jeff Miller was also an active conservationist. He enjoyed natural pursuits including catch-andrelease fly fishing in Idaho, Colorado, and M i c h i g a n . Sporting influences are evident in the collection, which includes many carved and painted fish decoys and plaques in addition to a plethora of other finely-curated A m e r i c a n
decorative arts. The estate auction will feature two Berks County, Pa., carved and painted Carolina parrots by ‘’Schtockschnitzler’’ Simmons. Early Pennsylvania arts of all mediums play a dominant role in the Miller collection, and a strong group of Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery pitchers at the end of the auction stand out amidst a largely American field. Jeff Miller’s ceramic experience also furnishes this sale with exceptional redware, including a North Carolina slip-decorated dish, circa 1830, attributed to Solomon Loy of Alamance County. A Pennsylvania sgrafitto charger by Andrew Uhler and Snow Hill Society bowl incite further interest in redware offerings that are notable for their quality and quantity. Though the Millers are best known as collectors of American ironwork, the majority of which currently resides in the Winterthur Museum, Pook & Pook, Inc.’s auction will demonstrate the couple’s affinity for carved and painted Americana, particularly early boxes. A Lancaster County, Pa., painted poplar dresser box by the skilled “Compass Artist” will cross the block, as will a Lancaster painted pine “Weber” dresser box with a pristine green surface. Highlights will also include a New England basswood dome-lid box decorated with large tulips on an ivory painted ground. American painting also shines through the Millers’ art collection, which features several striking watercolors and examples of Pennsylvania fraktur. Two Jacob Maentel portraits complement fraktur birth certificates by Abraham Heebner, Martin Brechall and two examples by the Rev. Henry Young. American landscapes have a strong presence within the collection as well, with several scenes of Niagara Falls, Mount Vernon, Harper’s Ferry, and the Hudson and Harlem Rivers. An oil-oncanvas still life attributed to renowned artist Severin Roesen adds further interest and has been estimated at $10,000 to $20,000. Coming directly from the home of Anne and J. Jefferson This “Schtocksnitzler” Simmons (Berks County, Pa., active 1885-1910) carved and painted Carolina parrot retains its original polychrome surface and turned base.
This is a Severin Roesen (1815-1872) oil-on-canvas still life.

crest adorned with three highrelief carvings of an eagle flanked by the busts of two stags, will be sold. An 18thcentury New England Queen Anne tiger maple tavern table and a rare Boston bentwood side chair by Samuel Gragg are other strong examples, as is a L a n c a s t e r County painted pine dower chest. Painted by the “Embroidery Artist” and dated 1785, the chest is decorated with three tulip panels on a blue ground above two ivory drawers.
This estate auction is a rare opportunity for bidders to own quality pieces from a smartlycurated collection. Jeff Miller once wrote, “Some day there will be a large and interesting auction. I would like to look down on it in order to know if my taste and judgment w5ill be justified by the marketplace.” As he predicted, that day is here. Gallery preview for this large and interesting event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from noon to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and a preview reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 24. The hour prior to the sale from 9 to 10 a.m. is also available for preview purposes. Interested bidders can register to bid on w w w . B i d square.com or in person with Pook & Pook, Inc. through their phone, absentee, or in-house bidding options. For further information, call 610-269-4040 or email info@pookand pook.com. The Boston bentwood side chair by Samuel Gragg (1772-1855) retains its original ivory surface with brown pinstriping and is stamped on the underside “S. Gragg Boston.”

Names Of Suspects In Daring Isabella Stewart Gardner Heist Revealed The Paintings Have Not Been Recovered year that they had identified who was responsible and have revealed details about the investigation over the years but declined to name names. Reissfelder, a career criminal, was only free to commit the notorious crime because he was cleared of a murder charge in 1982. His courtappointed lawyer was John Kerry, now Secretary of State. It would appear that John Kerry was involved incidentally and tangentially in the Gardner Museum heist. Kerry was appointed by the court to defend Reissfelder during his appeal, after the other man involved in the killing gave a death bed confession identifying another criminal as his accomplice. After Reissfelder was released, he and Kerry, then a candidate for lieutenant governor, went out for a celebratory beer, an occasion that made local newscasts. Before long, however, Reissfelder was back to his criminal ways, including the Gardner job.

Merlino arranged the now infamous heist (possibly at the behest of another, unknown party), in which Reissfelder and DiMuzio dressed as Boston police officers in order to trick the night watchmen into letting them in. Then, they took their time, stealing 13 artworks, including Rembrandt’s only seascape, “The Storm in the Sea of Galilee,” and Vermeer’s “The Concert.” Less than a year later, however, Reissfelder died from a drug overdose, and DiMuzio was murdered, possibly because Merlino discovered a planned coup he was leading. Merlino died in 2005 from diabetes. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Mass., is one of the most important art instiImage courtesy of tutions in the world. As reported by Sarah Cascone of artnet.com, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum may still be missing its beloved Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer paintings (although thanks to the Google Art Project, they can be viewed online), but the names of the perpetrators of the notorious crime have finally been released. As first reported by Breitbart News, citing sources within the FBI, the two robbers were George Reissfelder and Lenny DiMuzio, both of whom died within a year of the 1990 heist. The hunt for the paintings from the robbery continues. The two men belonged to the crew of local criminal Carmello Merlino, who was first mentioned in connection with the 25-year-old robbery back in 1992. Reissfelder and DiMuzio have also been suspects in the case for many years, but their role in the burglary is only now being confirmed. The FBI announced last

owner was a generalist who had rooms for primitives, kitchen items, tools, militaria, china/glass, books and paper. Thus, one could move from area to area, skipping those that are not of interest and spending lots of time digging in the areas where you might find something. Also, while others had clearly picked certain categories in the shop, there was plenty of overlap. For example, there were wrought iron kitchen implements in both the kitchen and tools areas and political items were mixed in

to unload the “treasures.” Sadly, the spouse is often shocked (and sometimes angry at the auctioneer) when the whopping prices on the items don’t materialize at the auction. It’s funny and sad to see the tagged $50 flat irons sell for $5 at such sales. So, I have to now admit that I stumbled upon an antiques barn down in Las Cruces, N.M., where the owner was motivated to sell, and the prices were great. Was there a ton of stuff there? You better believe it, but it was priced to move. The owner was retired military, and he enjoyed going to sales and buying for resale. For me, it was the chance to do something I had not done in years—dive into the shop and root around. My wife, who gets overwhelmed in all the clutter, stood back while I plowed ahead. It was a blast! Such shops are rare to find today, but when you do, they are the most fun. The

I have to confess that I stopped going into antique barn single-owner shops some years ago. Why? Well, what I seemed to see emerging was a pattern that these barns (or connected series of buildings) were operated by a single owner who ran them as “tribute collections” with correspondingly out-of-sight pricing. What I mean by “tribute
collections” is where you have a collector/dealer who has amassed a huge collection of items that they are loathe to part with, but their spouse will no longer allow the stuff to be kept inside. So, in order to keep peace, the collector/dealer takes over a barn and offers it for sale. The items are piled in as high and as deep as possible to create the aura that this is a veritable treasure chest rather than the accumulation of a hoarder. The flip side is that the owner usually is not motivated to sell these “treasures” so the prices are crazy expensive, and there is no room to negotiate. Unfortunately, just enough merchandise sells to novice collectors who think they have found a treasure chest in the barn that the dealer/collector is satisfied that it all works. Interestingly, I have often been to the estate sales of these barns after the owner/collector dies, and the surviving spouse can’t wait

The extravaganza attracts antiques aficionados from all along the eastern seaboard and mid-Atlantic regions. The show offers tremendous values. “Collectors find authentic pieces at fair prices. Why go to New York and spend more? said Stokes. One firsttime attendee from New York even told Stokes, “I have shopped antiques shows up and down the Atlantic Coast for years. You are too modest

came home. No cracks and great condition. Daughter Jane found a big cache of Mexican movie posters from the 1950s that were priced to sell at $5 each. Little daughter Mary got a Muppet Movie script book and was quite content. My best discovery: a New Mexican mule pack saddle dating from the first half of the 19th century with a lovely red wash on it. Pulled from the outside for $40, it was a real find and genuine piece of western American heritage. My moral in all of this is that while lots of these tribute antique barns still exist, there are amongst them some real treasure chests worth poking around in!

with the military. So, what did I find? Well, I reconnected with a teenage passion of mine: collecting wood planes. Beyond their wonderful tactile qualities, they also tend to be much older than folks believe, with the majority of the all-wood ones dating from the 19th century. At $15 a plane, that was a good price for marked examples. A German 19thcentury stoneware pitcher for $20 was another nice hit that

New York City about the great quality and pricing at your show. The Shenandoah Antiques Expo has a reputation for fine 18th and 19th century American and English period antiques. Stokes added, “We draw reputable dealers from Florida to Maine. It’s not just about the sale. They take time to share curatorial expertise with anybody who has a question. Show goers can also uncover a trove of jewelry, silver, glassware, primitives, rugs, and better collectibles such as doorstops, decorated stoneware, art, decoys, toys and Civil War memorabilia. Tastemakers of another sort snap up country Americana, such as early 19th-century painted furniture and midcentury modern pieces that tuck into eclectic interiors. “At the end of the day, the expo is sheer entertainment for anybody bitten by the antiques bug or somebody
looking for a fun weekend. SHOWS & MARKETS On a recent epidsode of PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow, a painting titled “Aiding a Comrade by American artist and sculptor Frederic Remington came in and was given a price tag even the owner couldn’t believe. “This piece, together with the letter, would be something that I would value at auction between $600,000 and $800,000, said appraiser Colleene Fesko. “Oh my goodness! I was hoping I would be wildly exuberant. I am, said the owner, Ty Dodge.
Dodge stated that the painting had been in his family for years, and one of the men depicted is his own great-grandfather, Army officer Lea Febiger. Febiger is believed to have been friends with Remington. He even wrote a letter describing the adventures they had together in the late 1800s. The letter itself was valued at $2,000. Dodge said he knew the nearly 120-year-old portrait by one of the most important Western artists of the century was worth a lot, but even he
was floored by just how valuable it turned out to be. “Frankly, I was pretty shocked. We had it appraised for insurance purposes back in the ’60s, and it was appraised at $7,500. It has been reported that Dodge recently donated the painting to the Birmingham Museum of Art, which has a collection of Remington bronze sculptures.

Fresh-To-Market Masterworks Define American Fine Art Auction At Heritage
George Wesley Bellows’ “Storm Sea,” done in 1913, will be offered in Heritage Auctions’ American Fine Art Sale to be held on May 2.
Forks, where he lived from 1929 on (est. $100,000+). In the Western Art arena, Catharine Carter Critcher’s most ambitious and accomplished work “Mother and Daughters,” 1936, will make its auction debut (est. $100,000). Undeniably, this fresh-to-the-market, extraordinary masterwork celebrates the abundance, hospitality, and promise of the artist’s New Mexico home. Similarly, Nicolai Fechin’s “Peasant Girl” is a superb example of the humanistic and expressionistic portraiture that distinguished him within the Taos art colony (est. $80,000+). The painting makes its auction debut at Heritage Auctions after
remaining in the same family for decades. Texan Johnie (Mrs. H.S.) Griffin, who summered in Ranchos de Taos, befriended Fechin’s wife, Alexandra (Tinka), and purchased the painting from Fechin. The auction features important examples of illustration, including Joseph Christian Leyendecker’s “Thanksgiving, 1628-1928:

300 Years Pilgrim and Football Player” (est. $100,000+). Created specifically for the Nov. 24, 1928, cover of The Saturday Evening Post, this work characterizes the artist’s iconic take on the 300th anniversary of the holiday. Exercising his trademark playful and fantastical style, Leyendecker renders the holiday’s past and present through the mythical meet-up of a stalwart Pilgrim and a battered but tough modern-day football player. Newell Convers Wyeth’s spectacular depiction of derring-do, “When He Was Fourteen, Michael Strogoff Had Killed His First Bear, Quite Alone, 1927” (est. $250,0000) and Dean Cornwell’s “Options,” The Saturday Evening Post story illustration, March 24, 1917 (est.$25,000+), rounds out a stellar group of Golden Age Illustration. G e o r g e Wesley Bellows’ turbulent and brooding “Storm Sea,” from 1913, a haunting homage to Winslow Homer that encapsulates Maine’s untamable spirit, could sell for $150,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Saturday, May 2, American Fine Art Auction. The auction will bring together a cavalcade of works by the country’s most revered painters. “This auction celebrates the history of American Art, with strong offerings by top artists in the category,” said Aviva Lehmann, director of American Art at Heritage Auctions. “From important Illustration to stellar Ash Can, Western and Modernist material, this auction typifies firstclass examples across the field.” John Marin’s iconic watercolor “Lighthouse, Stonington, Maine,” from 1921, stands as an important contribution to the artist’s body of work following his discovery of Maine’s rugged outcrops and churning sea (est. $100,000+). Rockwell Kent’s exquisite, luminous “Golden Fall,” circa 1955, depicts a Modernist view of the Adirondack Mountains from the artist’s farm, “Asgaard,” near Au Sable

American Impressionist and Ashcan Masterworks To Go On View at Smithsonian American Art Museum museum’s permanent collection to create a narrative around the excitement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in America, a “comingof-age” period in American art. Many of the works will be on public view for the first time. “We are deeply grateful to Thelma and Melvin Lenkin for lending such treasures to the museum, an exceptional enhancement to our galleries, to be enjoyed by all our spring and summer visitors,” said Elizabeth Broun, the Margaret and Terry Stent director of the museum. “Each of these 19 artworks is a premier example of these artists’ most
significant contributions to American art. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to exhibit them in concert with our own collection, where they help us to more fully tell the story of such a vital period in our nation’s artistic development,” said Broun. Chief Curator Virginia Mecklenburg and Curator Emeritus William Truettner, longtime distinguished scholars of American Art, selected the artworks borrowed from the Lenkin collection. Paintings by Bellows, Cassatt and Glackens have been featured at retrospectives of those artists, but many of the other
paintings have rarely, if ever, been displayed in public. The Lenkins began collecting more than 30 years ago, inspired to begin by the late Walter Hopps, then a curator at the museum. They have focused primarily on the Gilded Age, Impressionist and Ashcan generations before and after the turn of the 20th century. The installation is supported by the Raymond J. and Margaret Horowitz Foundation. Gilded Age expatriate artists such as Sargent and Cassatt pioneered impressionist styles abroad, challenging long-standing practices and

rivaling their French counterparts. After 1900, artists on this side of the Atlantic such as Bellows, Glackens, Sloan and Shinn also abandoned traditional studio techniques to portray New York City’s bustling streets and slice-of-life views of parks, shops, bridges and entertainment halls. Together these artists revolutionized American art, liberating it from academic structures to become a dynamic mirror of life as “The American Century” was beginning. The earliest artworks on loan date to the mid-1870s, when America’s Centennial led to a self-conscious assessment of the country’s cultural achievements and a new ambition for robust artistic expression. Mary Cassatt’s tribute to her mother “Portrait of a Lady (The Artist’s Mother Reading ‘Le Figaro’)” (1877-78) is a forceful portrait of strongwilled resolve, rivaling James McNeill Whistler’s earlier portrait of his mother, titled “Arrangement in Grey and Black” (1871). Cassatt’s portrait is among the most powerful displays of painting technique in her entire oeuvre. The exotic flora and fauna depicted in Martin Johnson Heade’s “White Brazilian Orchid” (circa 1870) and “Yellow Orchid and Two Hummingbirds” (circa 187585) signal a new American taste for decorative subjects of elegance and preciousness. John La Farge’s “Roses in a
Shallow Bowl” (1879) conveys the refined aestheticism to which Americans aspired during the Gilded Age. Works by artists such as Bellows and Sloan, painted near the turn of the century, focused on urban subjects such as immigrant children, construction, shoppers, new wealth, and the see-and-beseen aspect of city life. These painters embraced a changing world and depicted Americans plunging headlong into the future. Two of Bellows’ paintings, “River Rats” (1906) and “Noon” (1908) are emblematic of the artist’s affection for the gritty realities of New York’s rapidly developing neighborhoods and their inhabitants. Scrappy-looking children dive off a makeshift dock into the East River near a hillside cleared for tenement construction in “River Rats.” In “Noon,” a team of workhorses pulls a wagon loaded with barrels beneath an elevated train as stylishly dressed ladies scurry through the industrial site, showing New York in the

was certainly exemplified in January at the Beinfeld Las Vegas Antique Arms Show. In addition to Julia’s displaying in the Antique Arms room, Julia’s also exhibited in a large special room adjacent to the entrance where they housed and displayed examples from various important collections for their upcoming auction. One such collection featured was, of course, Elmer Keith’s. Consistently over The rare and important factory engraved gold and silver Colt SAA exhibited at the 1876 World’s Fair sold for $333,500.
the three-day span of the show, there was a steady stream of viewers that had come to look at, handle and reminisce about Keith. Such was the reputation of Keith, and because of this, it was fully anticipated that his guns would generate a great deal of interest far beyond the normal price range of similar examples. One of the first guns up was the most famous of all of Elmer Keith’s handguns, a customized Colt SA Army revolver referred to as “The Last Word” in handguns. Bearing SN #5, beautifully engraved and custom designed by Mr. Keith and Harold Croft, it came to the auction block with a presale estimate of $30,000-$50,000. After a furious bidding battle, it sold for $80,500. Gun after gun after gun carrying an Elmer Keith pedigree brought high and sometimes tremendous prices, all of which were testaments to the man’s stature. A pair of Smith & Wesson hand ejector First Model (triple lock target revolvers with holster rig) because of their association with Keith was conservatively estimated at $6,000-$10,000 but blew through the high estimate to bring nearly $40,000. Keith was a renowned big game hunter, and his collection included many double rifles that accompanied him (Continued on page 17)

James D. Julia Auctioneers conducted an extraordinary firearms auction grossing over $16 million. Immediately preceding their sale on March 12 to 14, the adjacent Poulin Auction Company conducted a firearms auction totaling nearly $5 million, making the total take for firearms in Fairfield, Maine, during that one week period approximately $21 million. Julia’s continues, as they have for many years, to be the seller of many of the most high-end and expensive guns each year. This sale offered approximately 450 lots that realized $10,000 or more, 55 lots that realized $50,000 or more, and 11 lots that realized $100,000 or more. In addition, they continue to handle the greater number of high-end and frequently iconic collections in the firearms auction world today. This sale included at least a dozen important private collections. In the annals of firearms history of the 20th century, probably one of the most famous and prolific gun writers, scholars, and big game hunters of his time was Elmer Keith. He was also a firearms innovator and sometimes referred to as “the Father of the Magnum.” Keith and his writings were legendary. This
