Antique Trains, Toys, And Holiday Items Attract 4,000 Registered Bidders To Milestone Coveted 1932 Lionel Scenic Railway Store Display Sells For $12,000

This 1932 Lionel #177 Scenic Railway store display, 78-by-57 inches, all original, sold for $12,000. Early trains, German tin windups, cast-iron banks, and just about every other category of interest to today’s toy collectors were gathered under one roof in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, on April 14 for Milestone Auctions’ 826-lot Spring Spectacular sale. With all forms of bidding available, there was strong overseas competition, with internet

and phone participants from 10 countries. “What we offered was a very nice selection of the types of toys everyone likes. We cater to midlevel as well as advanced collectors,” said Milestone Auctions coowner Miles King. “There were around 4,000 registered bidders, with many from Europe and Japan. The international market for toys is pretty strong right now, in my opinion. Prices were very steady across the board.” The sale was flush with excellent trains, including boxed sets and accessories by Marklin, Bing, Ives and many other respected brands. A rare 1932 Lionel #177 Scenic Railway store display finished as top lot of the sale. All original and measuring 78-by-57 inches, it sped to $12,000 against an estimate of $10,000-$15,000. An American Flyer Presidential train reached $2,160. All prices quoted in this report included a 20 percent buyer’s premium. King noted that the train descriptions in the April 14 auction catalog were much more detailed Continued on page 3

The Hunterdon County Antiques Show and Sale will take place on Sunday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hunterdon County Fairgrounds. The county fairgrounds are in South County Park along Route 179 in Ringoes, N.J. For GPS, use 1207 Route 179, Lambertville, N.J., 08530. Jeffrey S. Evans and Associates will conduct their 19th annual spring auction of 18th- and 19th-century glass and lighting in two sessions on Friday, May 25, beginning at 1 p.m. EST and on Saturday, May 26, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST. The sale will feature part two of the renowned collection of the late Wagner Thielens of New York City. Thielens began collecting in the 1960s, focusing on early American pressed glass of the 1840 to 1860 period. Early in his collecting life, he and his partner, John, developed a close relationship with legendary dealers George Abraham and Gilbert May of Granville, Mass., and, over the years, Thielens acquired many of his most important pieces from them. Jeff and Beverley Evans had become good friends with Thielens over the years and made twice-yearly pilgrimages to the city to deliver purchases he had made from their auctions. “I first met Wagner about 20 years ago at a glass auction in Connecticut where I had driven overnight to buy a rare piece for my personal collection. Well, needless to say, Wagner outbid me, and I was crushed. After the sale, Beverley made me introduce myself and congratulate him on his purchase. It didn’t take long to realize we had met a kindred spirit and made a longtime friend,” said Jeff Evans. “Wagner lived in a highrise complex on the Upper East Side where the glass collection took up two apartments. His most prized possessions were displayed in his main residence on the 33rd floor, which had a spectacular view overlooking the East River. He had a ‘storage’ apartment on the sixth floor that was mainly floor-to-ceiling showcases for all the overflow.

There will be over 50 colored vases from the Thielens collection.

Extremely rare colored lacy covered salts and more than 30 colored covered egg cups/pomades will be sold from the Thielens collection.

Beverley and I are honored to handle the dispersal of the Thielens collection. It’s a bittersweet occasion, however, as another legendary glass collector has passed. the future of our country hung in the balance of a host of large and small battles. I debated and thought and then pushed the button. At one minute out, I was outbid. I jumped in again and got the medal at a price that, while not bargain, was reasonable considering what others might bring. All of us sometimes have to reach. In the short term, it is painful. I can recall those pushes when I reached to make a purchase (and then felt it again when something else came up), but I have found that those generally were worth it. Many years ago, I purchased a huge piece of silver in Adamstown on one Sunday. My friend, Ted Wiederseim, was probably pretty skeptical of the purchase, which for my credit card and me was at a limit. But

So, the other day I was checking out an online auction while I was waiting for my wife, who was completing some paperwork. Having lots of collections, it is rare for me not to find something that I like while browsing, and surely there were many enticing lots that I was moderately interested in. The save function let me set a number of them aside for future study. However, as I went to the current auction part of the website, I spotted a couple of items that really

established until 1905 and not authorized by the War Department until 1907. Some estimate that only about 7,000 were ever claimed by veterans, as most were long gone by the time the word got out that it was available. The ones that were issued were numbered, and with some research, one can trace that number to a specific soldier. What popped up online was one of those attributed medals. It was one of those moments for all collectors whether in a shop or at a sale where you have to decide how far you reach. For me, it would limit my purchases for a while down the road, and that meant more time cutting the grass and less collecting. But it was something that I had coveted for a long time. A physical and tangible tie to those days between 1861 and ’65 when

caught my interest. As a collector, and I am betting like many of you, I often read a book or see a movie about some topic in history and automatically get interested in the subject. The Civil War is one of those subjects that continues to catch my attention. Having spent some time on Ancestry.com looking up my family and doing the DNA test, I had found several family members (more collateral than direct) who had served in the war. So my interest was piqued enough to re-read “The Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara and then to re-watch “Gettysburg.” So, I was primed for the discovery online of a numbered and thus attributed Civil War campaign medal. The Civil War campaign medal is not well-known today. Why? Because it was not

the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as a museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Virginia. He holds an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decoPeter Seibert, a native rative arts, interior design, Pennsylvanian, grew up in and history. 10 years later when we moved to New Mexico and I needed some quick cash, the price more than made up for the push. So I encourage you to follow that gut instinct and make the push for that choice piece. As a friend said to me many years ago, you only regret the ones that you do not buy.

“Upholstery CSI: Reading The Evidence” New Exhibit Is Inspired By Landmark Book On The Subject By Renowned Conservator Leroy Graves This easy chair from Newport, R.I., ca. 1780, mahogany, maple, and birch, was a museum purchase, 1930-410.

century fabrics and revealed the original upholstery foundation and portions of the original show cloth. He attached reproduction wool show cloth and silk tape over the original damaged fabrics using nonintrusive conservation techniques in order to return the couch as close as possible to its original appearance. While the original bolster survived, evidence for the lost cushion was discovered in the soiling pattern on the back of the couch: the bolster and cushion protected an area of the back keeping it cleaner than the surrounding fabric. Another object that is full of information about the artisans who made and altered it as well as the family that used it over the centuries to be highlighted in the exhibition is a mid-18th-century easy chair made in Eastern Virginia. Over the past 250 years, this chair was reupholstered at least seven times, often with new fabrics placed over the earlier ones. (Its original show material was costly silk woven in blue and cream. Subsequent layers include red worsted wool and silk, several 19thcentury printed cottons and even a reproduction red and

white stripe similar to one sold by Colonial Williamsburg.) A rare object like this one enables curators (and soon museum-goers) to learn about the textiles, upholstery techniques and choices craftsmen and families made over the years. For upholstery conservators, reading the evidence never ceases to amaze, and visitors to Upholstery CSI will have the opportunity to learn why. Although he has worked for more than 30 years in Colonial Williamsburg’s furniture conservation lab, Leroy Graves says, “There is always something exciting and new coming into the lab that I haven’t seen before. It’s marvelous. When I look at the evidence on a piece of furniture, I think about the original ‘upholder’ [the term for an 18th-century upholsterer] and wonder: What was he thinking when he did his work? Who was his client? You find shortcuts in the upholstery and wonder if the person was qualified to do upholstery or what was he taught? His client might have preferred edges or contours or a profile that the furniture’s frame was not meant to accommodate and that’s why a piece was upholstered the way it was. You have to know what you’re looking at to be able to read the evidence.” An extraordinary ca. 1765 easy chair frame attributed to the Anthony Hay cabinet shop in Williamsburg will also be featured in Upholstery CSI, and it has a lot to tell experts and exhibition visitors alike. If it could talk, it would say, “I had stuffed rolls on my seat rail, crest rail and wings and a down-filled cushion on my seat. My show cloth was leather, probably black, ornamented with brass nails. My lack of tacking rails gave my

upholsterer a headache!” All of this information remains in the frame today; by reading its structural and nail evidence, conservators and curators can tell how a chair was originally upholstered: what techniques the upholsterer used, what type of upholstery profile he created with those techniques and what show material covered the chair. “Upholstery CSI: Reading the Evidence” is made possible through a gift from Don and Elaine Bogus. To coincide with the exhibition, special programs are planned including “Reading the Evidence,” a discussion of 18th-century upholstery with Ms. Chicirda and Mr. This side chair from England, ca. 1700, ash, Graves, on Tuesday, leather, linen, straw, iron and brass, was a June 26, at 5:30 p.m. In museum purchase, 1954-990. this fascinating presentation, Chicirda will provide an overview on 18th- These tours are also included century upholstery and in Art Museums admission upholstery techniques. tickets. A book signing of The Art Museums of Colonial Graves’ book, “Early Seating Williamsburg. Upholstery: Reading the Evidence,” will take place following the discussion. Also planned are weekly “Focus on Furniture” tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. Museum visitors will be guided on indepth tours of the Art Museums’ 18th-century furniture galleries, which include rare examples of tables, chests and desks and conclude by highlighting the upholstered furniture feaLeroy Graves tured in “Upholstery CSI.”

A rare post-war French release double grande poster from “Casablanca” soared to $143,400, helping Heritage Auctions’ Movie Posters Auction reach $1,958,775 in total sales on April 7 and 8. A film that was made with the hope of creating a successful war drama only to evolve into a beloved classic was represented in the “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1947) first post-war French release double grande ($143,400) and was one of just two known to exist. It featured artwork believed to have been done by Hervé Morvan, the popular 20th-century poster artist. “This auction contained a variety of desirable posters for collectors of all tastes,” said vintage posters director Grey Smith. “The ‘Casablanca’ poster is a beautiful poster that drew the attention of our

“Diane Arbus: A Box Of Ten Photographs” On View At The Smithsonian American Art Museum Exhibition Examines A Rare Portfolio Presented In Its Entirety For The First Time completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held. The exhibition traces the history of “A box of ten photographs” between 1969 and 1973. The story is a crucial one because it was the portfolio that established the foundation for Arbus’s posthumous career, ushering in photography’s acceptance into the realm of “serious” art. Philip Leider, then editor-in-chief of “Artforum” and a photography skeptic, admitted after an encounter with Arbus and the portfolio, “With Diane Arbus, one could find oneself interested in photography or not, but one could no longer…deny its status as art…What changed everything was the portfolio itself,” said Leider. In May 1971, she was the first photographer to be featured in “Artforum,” which also showcased her work on its cover. “The portfolio was central to the pioneering transition Arbus was making away from magazine photography,” said Jacob. “She took seriously her centrality to that transition within the larger field of photography and saw the portfolio as a means of achieving a level of financial stability and of artistic identity that magazine work had never afforded her.” In June 1972, the portfolio was sent to Venice, Italy, where, in another breakthrough, Arbus was the first photographer included in a Biennale, at that time the premiere international showcase for contemporary artists. There, Hilton Kramer, writing for the New York Times, declared the portfolio a sensation. Its story coincides with that of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, for it was this museum, then known as the National Collection of Fine Arts, that organized the American contribution to the Biennale. “By including Arbus and the portfolio in the 1972 Biennale, the Smithsonian American Art Museum played an important early role in Arbus’s legacy,” said Jacob. “Much has followed in essays, books and exhibitions that interpret and expand her oeuvre, but only “A box of ten photographs” was completed by Arbus herself, and it alone offers an unmediated selfreflection on her work.” In addition to the portfolio itself, the exhibition and accompanying catalog present new and compelling scholarship, adding detail to the period between Arbus’ death and her 1972 posthumous

During this important period, Jacob establishes, it was “A box of ten photographs” that conveyed the essence of Diane Arbus to the world. About the Artist Having started her career as a studio photographer with her husband, Allan Arbus, Diane Arbus quit the studio in 1956 and later studied with Lisette Model at the New School in New York City. She became a magazine photographer, working on assignment for high-profile periodicals including Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar. In 1963, she was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship for a project that focused on American customs. The Guggenheim was among the most prestigious of fellowships available to artists, including photographers, making it an important source of financial and artistic support for those like Arbus who sought to break free from the strictures of magazine photography. Her later work was emotionally complex and explored subject matter outside of the mainstream, such as portraits of individuals whose professional, personal or

physical attributes deviated from what was considered normal or acceptable in Arbus’ time and photographs that frankly captured sexuality or revealed underlying currents of domestic tension and dysfunction. At the time of her death, Arbus was already a growing influence on the field of photography but not widely

known to the larger public. Diane Arbus (1923-71) was one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century. “Diane Arbus: A box of ten photographs” forges new ground as the first exhibition to focus on the portfolio Arbus was working on at the end of her life. This heretofore missing piece from her biography was as important to her evolving artistic identity as it was to the broader public recognition of photography as a fine-art practice. Central to the transition Arbus was making away from magazine work at the time of her death, the portfolio bridges a lifetime of modest recognition with a posthumous career of extraordinary acclaim. “Diane Arbus: A box of ten photographs” is on view until Jan. 21, 2019, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM). The exhibition is organized by John Jacob, the McEvoy Family curator for photography. The museum is the only venue for the exhibition. “This exhibition sheds new light on a crucial and often overlooked stage in Arbus’ career, as well as on a transformational moment in the history of contemporary photography,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “The museum was an early champion of photography as an important art form reflecting the American experience. We’re proud of the role that SAAM played in bringing the work of Diane Arbus to wider recognition in the 1970s and are pleased to present ‘A box of ten photographs’ in its entirety to a new generation.” In late 1969, Arbus began to work on a portfolio. At the time of her death in 1971, she had completed the printing for eight known sets of a planned edition of 50 of “A box of ten photographs,” as she titled it, only four of which she sold during her lifetime. Two were purchased by photographer Richard Avedon, another by artist Jasper Johns. A fourth was purchased by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper’s Bazaar. For Feitler, Arbus added an 11th photograph, “A woman with her baby monkey N.J. 1971.” This is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on “A box of ten photographs,” using the set that Arbus assembled specially for Feitler. It was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1986, and it is the only one of the portfolios

“World [sic] Fair 1933.” (You can find lots of these knives in online auctions selling for up to $200.) Disneyana experts say neither Mickey Mouse, nor any other Disney image, was used on any items from the 1933 World’s Fair. It should be noted that Mickey Mouse’s image was put on pocket knives made by the Imperial Knife Company in the 1930s, but these were not marked World’s Fair. Another fake Disney knife marks the opening of Disneyland in 1955. This is a total fantasy item of modern production. Lapel/hat pin trading and collecting is a popular hobby, and there’s no shortage of Disneyana in this category. There’s also no shortage of fakes, especially in limited-edition pins. Because fakers want to churn out as many pins as possible at as low a cost as possible, the quality of the pins can suffer. Look for misspellings (on the pin itself and on its card, if it has one), off-center or illegible maker’s marks, and rough or sharp edges. Multiple small indentations in the paint are another giveaway of poor workmanship and not up to Disney standards. One of the most famous fake Disney items is a brass belt buckle signed “Tiffany Studio, New York” with the date 1933, Mickey’s five-year anniversary. The buckle depicts Minnie Mouse looking through a telescope at a Mickey-shaped star in the sky. In fact, these belt buckles were made in England in the 1960s70s and were not authorized by Disney. They were being sold for hundreds of dollars by the scammer who made them until U.S. Customs caught him, but he’d written a book legitimizing his creations under the name Percy Seibert. Despite the fact that this is a fantasy piece (never made by Disney or Tiffany), it still holds a value of around $100 just because of its notoriety. On a more dangerous note, Britain’s Daily Mail reported that back in 2015, fake figures from the Disney movies “Maleficent” and “Frozen” contained toxic levels of phthalates (18 times the legal limit), a plastic softener that disrupts hormones in children and leads to lifethreatening conditions later in life. This occurred in the shopping season leading up to Christmas, when the market is hot for such items. This illustrates why it’s safer to buy from trusted, reputable sources, where only legitimate products are sold. In an unusual and more extreme case in April 2018, fake wax Disney figurines (along with legitimate ceramic-type figurines) were confiscated by the DEA and Homeland Security. Inside these figurines of such characters as Pluto, Tigger and Donald Duck, which were coming into the U.S. from

Disney and his colleagues had produced the first three animated shorts featuring Mickey Mouse in 1928. The first two were silent films, “The Gallopin’ Gaucho” and “Plane Crazy,” for which Disney couldn’t interest a distributor, but when sound came in, he added sound and music to “Steamboat Willie.” Walt personally gave Mickey his first voice, and the cartoon was a huge success. Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy were then developed in 1929 and introduced in the cartoon “Silly Symphonies.” Taking that $300 may have been one of the smartest marketing moves in Disney’s young career, giving birth to the concept of merchandising cartoon characters. However, Roy and Walt’s initial reason for putting their characters on merchandise wasn’t to make a quick buck, it was to protect the characters as their company’s property. This was in reaction to an earlier partnership that resulted in Walt’s original character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit being stolen. That merchandising groundwork expanded and led to the huge field of Disneyana collectibles we know today. From Mickey Mouse phones and Disney-themed games to character lunch boxes and lapel/hat pins, there’s almost no type of collectible that Disneyana hasn’t embraced. All are adorable, charming and desirable, but not all are authentic Disney. Take, for example, Disney collectibles purporting to be from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. There are a few renditions of a Mickey Mouse pocket knife, including one marked USA and another marked Taylor Cutlery. The pocket knife marked USA, with a red and black Mickey, was actually produced in the 1970s and can have some natural signs of age that tend to fool collectors. The knife stamped with Taylor Cutlery is an even later fake and may have a smaller second blade marked China; on this knife, Mickey’s image is black. Both knives are marked

It’s a little-known fact outside of Disneyana collectors and historians that the first Disney collectible came about as an advertising idea because then cash-strapped Walt Disney and his brother, Roy, needed money. The story, told by Walt and confirmed by Roy before Walt’s death in 1966, states that on a business trip to New York in 1929, “a fellow kept hanging around my hotel waving $300 at me and saying that he wanted to put the mouse on the paper tablets children use in school,” (as reported on the website, The Walt Disney Family Museum, www.waltdisney.org).

Pair Of French 18th-Century Louis XV Giltwood Chairs Bring $225,000 Two-Day Nye & Company Sale Was Held March 14 And 15 A pair of French 18th-century Louis XV giltwood fauteuils à la reine chairs sold for $225,000 at an Estate Treasures Auction held March 14 and 15 by Nye & Company Auctioneers, online and in the firm’s showroom in Bloomfield, N.J. “The unexpected discovery of the fauteuils in a New York City collection was a pleasant surprise, since much of what came from that group was primarily decorative,” said John Nye, president of Nye & Company Auctioneers. “They were, however, of the highest quality, and generated inquiries from all over the world as the word spread. The competition was intense.” The chairs, originally part of a suite of at least six, were made in France, circa 1755-60, by Jean Gourdin, after designs attributed to Nicolas and Dominique Pineau. One was stamped “Pere Gourdin,” and both had a handwritten label “89/4.” Two pair from the original suite sold at Christie’s in 2001.

An 18th-century gilded silver Russian icon, titled “Christ the Pantocrator,” sold for $5,300. “Attendance and interest was robust and heavier than usual from both the trade and private sector,” said Nye, which he attributed in part to the interest in the fauteuils. “There was a strong international presence in this sale. People flew over from Europe just to participate and bid on the pair of fauteuils.” Overall, the auction performed well and continued to show a strengthening market for traditional decorative arts. In addition to the lively crowd in the room, about 1,100 bids were placed via the online bidding platform LiveAuctioneers.com, and 2,300 more were placed

military presence just 100 miles away from the American coast. The map is marked “Secret” in the lower left and upper right corners. A two-page key, dated “October 27, 1962,” summarizes the Soviet military buildup in Cuba, listing sites, enumerating number of launchers and missiles, and completion status. Accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance, in part, “This ‘victory map’ was given about twenty years ago by Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. During a meeting at his office, McNamara described the pressure President John Kennedy was under from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to order an attack on Soviet targets in Cuba. McNamara said the president pored over this map before deciding to delay the attack. When Kennedy presented the map to McNamara, he called it the ‘victory map.’ During a meeting with McNamara, he said this was the only time he ever heard Kennedy say anything that sounded like gloating about how the crisis ended.” In the annals of the Cold War, no event is more talked about and debated than the
