Gifts of Love: Victorian Lockets, Bangles, & Brooches By Jane Clark ictorian jewelry is as complex in its symbolism, sentiment and design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society, and often her marital status and her sense of self. And is there a more classic piece of jewelry than a locket? Associated with the remembrance of someone special, it is a gift of love in the form of jewelry. The Victorians were sentimental, and wearing the image of a friend or loved one was a special thing in their lives. They were also family oriented, and what better item to pass down to their daughters and granddaughters than a locket. Future generations treasured them so much that many are still to be found today. Lockets are found in almost every jewelry catalogue no matter what the era. The size, styles and material from which they are made changed slightly with the fashions of the era, but their popularity continued from generation to generation. In the late Victorian era, wonderful sterling lockets were made in England, many in Birmingham, judging from the wide selection that we have had. There was a variety of motifs and designs, with some favorites being the sterling with gold overlay, the Japonesque designs and the buckle or garter motifs. The Comstock Lode in Nevada, USA, made sterling silver more plentiful, and the choice of sterling jewelry worn by Queen Victoria made it popular. The trade agreement between Japan and the United States caused a flurry of Japonesque design to be popular in art, furniture and jewelry. The lockets and collars were sold separately as well as in sets, which may be one reason it is harder to find a matched set today. Even more unusual is the locket, collar and bangle set in its own box. Like the lockets, bangles also came in a variety of styles. The widest I have seen so far was 7-1/4 inches wide, a wonderful gauntlet. Some are gilt sterling, but most are sterling or sterling with gold overlay. Ladies were smaller back then, so there are often hinged bangles in very small wrist sizes as well as standard sizes. Like the lockets, collars and bangles, brooches were often decorated with gold overlaid over sterling and hand etched designs. Some have glazed locket backs that can be used to house a photo or a lock of hair. Charming compliments to the lockets and hinged bangles, these are little treasures

Rare sterling silver gilded set with a locket, collar with matching hinged bangle, each with etched and applied flower and scroll designs and a lovely beaded edge, one of the only matching sets like this I have ever seen, circa 1880. The matching collar is 15 inches by 3/4 inch with a 2-inch Y and has a nice beaded center between each link; the locket has fittings inside for 2 photos and it is 2-1/4 inches by 1-5/8 inches; and the hinged bangle is 7 inches by 1 inch. This set is in such wonderful condition that it is almost as though it was never worn.
came in a wide variety of lengths, with the average being about 17 inches. The longest I have seen so far is 32 inches. They were joined by a pull-back circular catch called a spring ring, and if the collar had the Y-shaped drop, all three pieces would join on that ring. Often there are Sterling silver with rose gold and yellow gold gold overlay bangle with beaded edges, marked on the tongue “sterling silver,” tapered from 6-2/3 inches at the bottom up to 7-1/4 inches at the top by 2-5/8 inches wide.
hand-scratched Roman numerals inside the locket, but they do not seem to relate to size so it is uncertain what they do mean. I have heard one story that they were pawnbroker’s marks of some kind, but cannot document that. Some have the English sterling hallmarks and occasionally a maker’s mark as well, but certainly not all pieces are hallmarked. One of my favorite web sites for checking hallmarks is at h t t p : / / w w w. 9 2 5 - 1 0 0 0 . c o m . There you will find the hallmarks of England and many other countries.
The hinged bangles had sev- times) there were tiny landeral different types of scapes, scenes, butterflies (symbolic of resurrection) and insects, as well as the flowers and leaves. Other materials could be used along with silver, such as tiny seashells or agates. Novelty and natural themes were typical of the Victorian era, so while the flowers, ferns and leaves may be the most common motifs, others were also used. In the 1890s, women began to actively participate in sports, and tennis, golf, horseback riding and bicycling

closures. Many of these bangles have a variation on the vspring and box (also called tongue and groove) style closure. Most pins or brooches have a tube hinge and c-catch typical of the era. While some designs are just decorative, others had a symbolism typical of the Victorian era. And on pieces with gold overlay, check to see that the tiny overlaid pieces are still present. In addition to all the things to check on the lockets, do remember to check the bangles for tight easily operated closures. And, on all pieces, look for badly repaired fittings. These lockets are, by their nature, a bit difficult to take on and off the collar, but once you get the hang of how it’s done you will love them. Birmingham, England, was the center for so much Victorian era sterling work and jewelry making, so it is no wonder that many of these pieces are hallmarked for there. As I understand it, the charming fitted leather- and paper-covered jewelry boxes were also made there, and in the past few years they have become a collectible on their own. A full parure and the original box is an exciting find for sure! The Victorians were the first to have access to relatively inexpensive popular jewelry that could be afforded by the middle classes, the forerunner of what Coco Chanel would later call “costume jewelry”. Sterling was reasonably priced and therefore making whimsical unusual pieces didn’t require a large outlay or expense. More Than A Table This week’s item is a Continental two tier painted étagère of shaped oval form. It dates from the early 20th century. The molded upper tier has dancing maiden and seated figure of a man with a tankard, the larger lower tier painted with musical trophies and fitted with carrying handles. It’s on moulded cabriole supports. This decorative étagère appears to be of French or Austrian origin. It would have been very fashionable at the time of manufacture. The French term étagère is generally applied to small tables with two or more tiers for displaying objects or for serving food. Some have a removable tray to the upper tier with carrying handles, a wood gallery and plate glass base in order to see the decorated sur-

It All Began With Dolls And Wedding Cake Toppers By Kathleen Mullelly “When I received a new doll in my youth, my older sisters would always take it from me,” Dolores Marinello recalls. “Having given birth to two sons and no daughter, my passion for dolls began, and my collection grew quickly”.
“And there,” she recalls, “was the most gorgeous wedding cake topper - a bride and groom hovered over by a tiny cupid and surrounded by elaborate swirls, leaves and flowers (circa 1890). I cleaned the dome and put it back in place, leaving the bride and groom inside.” When asked why she collects

father, who refinished furniture for a living, told her, “Don’t buy new furniture, buy old, it’s made with real wood.” So the couple began to shop at antique shows, estate sales, yard sales, flea markets and auctions. While raising their two sons, Dolores was a bookkeeper and Sal worked as a draftsman. After early retire-
ment, Sal and Dolores decided to open their own shop in Rutherford, in 1985. Sal collected walking sticks, and with Dolores’ knowledge of dolls, wedding memorabilia and antiques, their shop was very successful for six years. Unfortunately the building that housed the shop was sold, and the new owners (Continued on page 11)

While shopping at an estate sale, Dolores purchased an old glass dome covered in grit and dust that was perfect for a small doll in her collection. Returning to her Rutherford, New Jersey, home Dolores lifted the dirt encrusted dome from its base.

doubled the rent, forcing Sal and Dolores to close their antique shop. Seven years ago Sal and Dolores moved to Columbus, New Jersey, and found the Historic Burlington Antique and Art Emporium. After shopping at the Emporium for a few years, they decided to go back into the antiques business. For the last three years Sal and Dolores have sold toys, Christmas items, dolls, swords, elegant glassware and, yes, even wedding memorabilia. Dolores stated, “I buy what I like, keep it for a while, and then I can sell it.” Traditionally, June is known as the month of weddings. Visit the Burlington Antique Emporium, located at 424 High Street, Burlington City, New Jersey, and you might also experience that feeling of romance that Dolores has every time she sees a wedding cake doll. Some of her extensive collections is on display during the month of June. The Historic Burlington Antique and Art Emporium are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The

Hunt Achieves Record Pricing For Williams Collection The highly anticipated live auction offering Ted Williams personal collection concluded on Saturday April 28th, live at Fenway Park in Boston, with historic results. Legions of Red Sox and baseball fans in general previewed the nearly 800 lots during the week preceding the auction which culminated with the live sale on Saturday. A full crowd filed into the State Street Pavilion overlooking the field at the 100-year-old stadium on Saturday morning to compete for the amazing selection of artifacts from Ted Williams’ personal collection. Ted Williams’ daughter Claudia Williams welcomed the participants with some
opening remarks and from that point on the bidding action was frenzied throughout the day, inclusive of record achieving pricing in numerous categories. “The prices attained today, across the board, were simply astounding. While the materials in the collection are certainly deserving of record pricing it is my opinion that the results are more likely attributable to the iconic status of Ted Williams. No category in the auction better
illustrated Ted Williams’ $230,000 against a pre sale importance to this country estimate of $50,000 to than his military items which $100,000. Another piece achieved outstanding prices realized. If there was any doubt as to the strength of the sports memorabilia market and specifically Ted Williams items those doubts were categorically erased with this offering.” remarked David Hunt, President of Hunt Auctions. Items from all aspects of
Williams’ life and career were offered including numerous significant examples from each category. Appropriately leading the way were several important personal award pieces to include his 1949 Most Valuable Player award plaque which ended at $299,000 (estimate $150,000 to $250,000), 1957 AL Batting Championship silver bat $195,500 ( e s t i m a t e $100,000 to $200,000), and his 1957 Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat crown which ended at a record price for its type of
within the collection that captured national media attention was the Babe Ruth autographed baseball signed, “To my Pal Ted Williams from Babe Ruth”. The ball began with online bidding at around $70,000 and rapidly escalated between competing room and telephone clientele hammering down at a record price of $195,500. While Ted Williams baseball materials appropriately focused attention there was also notable interest in the items which related to his military service during World War II and the Korean War. Many of the military related items were being displayed for the first time publicly with several drawing significant pricing highlighted
by a pair of handwritten flight logs each bearing numerous signatures from Williams. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees purchased the logs for a price of $35,600 and indicated that there were plans to send them to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to be displayed. “Thank you to all the fans of my dad. It is humbling to see the passion that fans still feel for my father after all these years. I am hopeful that his belongings have made their way to good homes and that the new owners will display them with a true sense of pride and enjoy
them as much as my dad and my family did. I am honored with the success, and happy that it allows me the chance to share a portion of the proceeds with the Jimmy Fund, a cause so close to m y f a t h e r ’s heart for such a l o n g time,” said Ted Williams’ d a u g h t e r, C l a u d i a Williams. An elite grouping of third party consignment items celebrating the history of Boston baseball in the 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park were also offered, with superb results. Highlights included the April 20, 1912, Fenway Park first pitch baseball selling at $172,500, 1903 World Series program at Boston at $138,000, and a 1955 Ted Williams professional model road jersey which brought $126,500. Additional highlight items included: • 1954 Ted Williams Boston Red Sox professional model home jersey - $80,500 • Ted Williams Hall of Fame induction ring -
$109,250 • Ted Williams’ 1960 AllStar Game professional
model baseball bat - $80,500 • Ted Williams professional model bat with provenance from Bobby Doerr $52,900 • Ted Williams Custom Made Winchester Model 21 Side-by-Side Shotgun $33,350
Elite Third Party consignments included: • An Incredible .400 Hitters Club autographed baseball - $63,250 • Richard Hoblitzell Boston Red Sox road uniform circa 1914-1918 - $57,500 (Continued on page 18)
