Frank Loveland Collection Offered “Many Brass Rings” At Bertoia’s $1.95M Spring Toy Break Auction T
here were smiles on many bidders’ faces as they departed Bertoia Auctions’ Spring Toy Break Auction on May 9th and 10th. “It was a terrific sale, and there was a great camaraderie throughout,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “As they headed out the door with their purchases, everybody was chattering about the toys and the prices they had sold for. They were saying, ‘You have to have another sale like that.’” It would be easier said than done to recreate a lineup rivaling Frank Loveland’s trains and trolleys, horse-drawn and bell toys from the late Harvey Funderwhite’s collection, and the numerous high-end European, automotive and early American toys from other consignors that bolstered the $1.95 million sale (all prices quoted include 18 percent buyer’s premium). “Some of the prices were eye-opening, approaching what some would call investment level,” Bertoia said. “The gross for the sale surpassed the total high estimate by 25 percent, which is remarkable.” The train category roared, with a circa 1904-08 Carlisle & Finch No. 45 locomotive with tender and passenger cars set

claiming top-lot status at $46,020. A boxed freight set by the same revered American manufacturer achieved $23,600. Fans of European trains joined the fray, competing with conviction over Marklin advertising boxcars, like the Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup car, $17,700, and a beautiful 1gauge Budweiser Beer car, $23,600. A Central Train Station was bid to $23,600, and the magical Marklin name even pushed the bidding on a small group of trackside accessories to $8,850. A Smith & White two-inch-gauge Electric Trolley from the Loveland collection required a hefty “fare” of $7,080. “I was not surprised about the trains’ strong performance because we had had so many phone calls prior to the sale,” said Bertoia. “The two-inch trains were the earliest ones made in America, and in that realm, demand definitely exceeds supply. There were many ‘brass rings’ in the Loveland collection, and there were people bidding on those trains who weren’t even The Marklin Central Station in yellow, orange train collectors; they were people who like to own rare things.” and green motif sold for $23,600. The Harvey Funderwhite horse-drawn cast-iron toy collection was the source of many superior examples entered in the sale, including a very rare Kyser & Rex Circus Wagon with articulated animals, $6,490, and a Wilkens Fire Chief Wagon, $5,605. A Gong Bell “Tramp” bell toy rolled off to a new owner for $2,142. A very scarce early American horsedrawn tin toy attributed to Althof Bergman had a revolving action and two figures that “walked” around an American flag. It more

than doubled its high estimate to sell for $8,850. The perennial appeal of motorcycle toys was evidenced by the M & K (Germany) tinplate ‘cycle with well-dressed lady passenger in its sidecar, which sped across the auction block to a $10,620 finish. Far more diminutive, but no less charming, a 3.5-inch penny toy motorcycle with a rider in a long, hooded coat commanded $2,242 against an estimate of $300-$400. The largest parade set manufactured by Heyde, dating to around 1890-1900, was presented in its original box with three trays. In exceptional condition and missing only two pieces, the United States Army Set No. 1003 included 66 mounted horses, 29 parade figures, 42 soldiers, two caissons and cannons drawn by four horse teams. It rose to the occasion and exceeded its high estimate with a winning bid of $10,620. Notable among the paper litho on wood toys, a German flat-bottom Noah’s Ark with River Belle ferry boat, “Horace” locomotive and several carved animals combined to achieve $4,130, more than five times the lot’s high estimate. American automotive toys were led by a Buddy ‘L’ pressed-steel Trencher on treads, $6,490; an Arcade cast-iron Yellow Cab panel van, $7,080; and a Seven Brothers delivery truck, $2,655. A boxed Louis Marx G-Man Pursuit Car in bright primary colors put the pedal to the metal and didn’t skid to a halt till it had reached $2,006. A fine selection of cast-iron mechanical banks included three popular J. & E. Stevens productions: a Speaking Dog (red dress version), $4,130; a Darktown Battery, $5,310; and a Bad Accident, $7,080. A Wheel of Fortune still bank, cast iron with a japanned finish, was a fresh find that enticed bidders to a $2,655 finish. Other auction highlights included a dated 1865 presentation fire trumpet given to the Perseverance Hose Co. No. 5, $3,245 against an estimate of $500-$700; a Bradley & Hubbard Three Kittens on Books castiron figural doorstop, $1,888; and a 1920 Rice’s Seeds advertising poster measuring An advertisement for Jerome B. secret, somehow the word got out about the premier Max Berry collection of mechanical banks, penny toys, horse-drawn and bell toys that the company will be auctioning in November. “We had recently started to receive phone calls from people asking if the rumors were true and congratulating us on winning the right to sell the greatest toy collection to come to the marketplace since the Donald Kaufman collection,” said Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions. “We realized it was no longer a secret and decided just to acknowledge it with pride. It’s a magnificent collection and one that collectors are sure to be talking about all summer long.” For further information, call 856-6921881 or visit www.bertoiaauctions.com. Tom Miano, Founder Of Serious Toyz, Tapped To Head New Pop Culture Department For Morphy Auctions All Future Serious Toyz Auctions To Be Conducted Under Morphy’s Banner Morphy Auctions’ Antique and Vintage Toy division is in expansion mode yet again. Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, recently announced that Tom Miano of Serious Toyz has joined the Pennsylvania company’s team of specialists. Miano, whose new title is Pop Culture Expert, will be acquiring consignments and managing sales of vintage toys and pop-culture collectibles for Morphy’s, starting with a Saturday, Sept. 6, auction of character, postwar and space toys. “Tom’s auction house, Serious Toyz, is a favorite with collectors. They love it. In the 19 years that Tom has been the hands-on owner and operator of the company, he has built an outstanding reputation,” said Morphy. “He’s well liked by everyone in the industry, and consignors know they can depend on his knowledge and expertise. He will be a tremendous asset to our operation.” The addition of a dedicated pop culture department completes the timeline of toys and collectibles offered in specialty sales at Morphy’s, which is already a worldwide force in the auction of antique, prewar vintage, and postwar boomerera toys. Until now, the only toy classification at Morphy’s that didn’t have its own expert-led department was pop culture and collectibles, said Morphy. “Now, with Tom Miano and

Serious Toyz merging into Morphy’s, it adds the final link we have been missing. Even better, it eliminates the job of building a new department organically from the ground up. It has already been built and fine-tuned by Tom, who is the best in the business. He has many consignors and customers that we didn’t have on our books and vice versa. One side complements the other very nicely,” Morphy said. Miano, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, began his career as an advertising art director at Foote, Cone & Belding. He later held creative director positions at several other leading international

Philadelphia Museum Of Art Celebrates Reinstallation The Philadelphia Museum of Art celebrates the return of Thomas Eakins’s “The Gross Clinic” by making it the centerpiece of a new installation in its galleries of American art. As part of the co-ownership agreement with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the display of Eakins’s masterpiece, which was painted in 1876, rotates between the two institutions every several years. Now back at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this painting is on view in a new installation with other works of art from the collection that reflect the growing cosmopolitan spirit and ambition displayed by Eakins and his contemporaries during the last few decades of the nineteenth century. One of Eakins’s greatest achievements, “The Gross Clinic” can be seen together with the artist’s second major painting of a medical subject, “The Agnew Clinic” of 1889, on loan from the University of Pennsylvania. This installation is intended to evoke a time when galleries often displayed sculpture, decorative arts, and paintings hung “salon style” from floor to ceiling. In addition to works by Eakins, paintings by Philadelphians William Trost Richards and Thomas Moran are on view, shown alongside works by Philadelphia-trained artists who lived abroad such as Mary Cassatt and Henry O. Tanner. Other cosmopolitan artists such as John Singer Sargent and James Abbott McNeill Whistler are also included. Cassatt’s “On the Balcony,” Whistler’s “Purple and Rose: The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks,” and Sargent’s “Portrait of Frances Sherborne Ridley Watts” demonstrate the international spirit of American art in this period. The reinstallation also presents a number of works that were exhibited at World’s Fairs, including those held in Philadelphia in 1876, Chicago in 1893, and Paris in 1900. Prominent among these is the painting voted most popular by viewers at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, Thomas Hovenden’s “Breaking Home Ties,” which depicts a young man’s

Exposition of 1900. Kathleen Foster, the Robert L. McNeil Jr. senior curator of American Art, said, “We are delighted to place “The Gross Clinic,” for the first time, in the midst of the great collection of American paintings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This renovation of our largest gallery devoted to his collection allows us to suggest the grandeur of the public exhibitions of this era. These international exhibitions gave artists the opportunity to learn from one another, gain a reputation, and attract patrons. A surprising number of objects from our collection were prize-winners in these salons and expositions, and so it is exciting to reconstruct this network and to illustrate the kind of environment in which “The Gross Clinic” was initially presented and judged.” The early exhibition history of each object—in Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Paris, and other cities— is noted on the labels in the gallery, and supplementary interpretive material is available on the museum’s website, thanks to the support of the Mellon Foundation. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 26th Street. For additional information, call 215-763-8100 or visit www.philamuseum.org. farewell to his family as he sets out to seek his fortune. When Philadelphia hosted the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, the fair drew 10 million visitors. Eakins seized this opportunity to submit a new painting, ambitious both in size and subject matter, depicting a surgery led by the renowned Dr. Samuel Gross. The painting’s intense realism famously upset the fine arts judges. Years later, at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Eakins’s two medical paintings were displayed together and he was awarded a medal for these achievements. In addition to depicting American themes, the works of art in these galleries reflect the international exchange of artistic ideas and their relationship to national ambition. The influence of Chinese and Japanese art is evident in Whistler’s paintings, the Herter Brothers’ elegant wardrobe, Rookwood’s innovative ceramics, and John La Farge’s spectacular stained glass panel “Spring.” A PanAmerican theme is highlighted by the work of Mexican painter José Maria Velasco, whose panoramic “Valley of Oaxaca” was also shown at the Chicago Fair. Velasco’s painting shares a pride in national landscape with Thomas Moran’s monumental “Grand Canyon of the Colorado River.” The widespread fascination with themes of exploration and the American West can be seen in both paintings and the decorative arts—as, for example, in a punch bowl, tray, and ladle designed by Joseph Heinrichs that features motifs of arrowheads, antlers, and American Indian figures. Other superb examples of the decorative arts of this period are prize-winning pieces from the 1876 Centennial, such as a cut glass decanter set by the Dorflinger Glass Company and an ornate cabinet by Giuseppe Ferrari. Represented also is a massive desk by Philadelphia’s most inventive architect of this era, Frank Furness, reminiscent of his design for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, which opened in the same year as the Centennial, and Louis Comfort Tiffany’s distinctive favrile glass, much admired at the Paris Universal

advertising agencies, including McCann-Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, and Ogilvy & Mather. In 1995, Miano decided to leave the corporate world in order to pursue his long-held dream of establishing an auction company focused exclusively on toys, collectibles and pop culture memorabilia. “Starting up and building Serious Toyz into what it is today was a learning process from day one,” Miano said. “In the beginning, my wife, Patti, and I did everything manually, with sheets of paper taped to our kitchen wall. Every time a bid would come in over the phone, we’d add it to the sheet of paper for that particular auction item. Of course, over the years our methods became a lot more sophisticated, but it’s nothing compared to the amazing operation Dan has in place at Morphy’s. The first time I visited his gallery, it was like finding the Promised Land. I feel very privileged to have been asked to join his team.” Morphy Auctions’ strength in technology and social media is a natural fit for the Serious Toy demographic, Miano said. “To reach a global audience, the company utilizes four Internet live-bidding platforms, including its own, Morphy Live. They’re ideally positioned to interact with pop culture collectors worldwide.” Miano is currently organizing toy consignments for Morphy’s Sept. 6 auction, which was previously advertised as Serious Toyz Auction #56. SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Eastern Odyssey
These past few weeks, I headed back East for a combination family visit for my wife and a bit of antiquing. It was my first trip back in two years, and it gave me a chance to see the market with a fresh set of eyes. When I left Pennsylvania, my sense was that the market was still in free-fall with the bottom not quite there and many dealers leaving the business. Today, my assessment is that the market probably has bottomed, although many good dealers have and continue to leave the market. Prices are all over and much is really dependent upon how far you are willing to travel for antiques. My trip began with some
Mary (5) get to pick something out in antique malls where we spend time. This not only teaches them that antiques are fun but starts them on their own collections as well. What did I pass on? Lots of Indian jewelry that was of middling quality and high prices. Native American items tend to be either outrageously priced or dirt-cheap. Not much inbetween. I would argue it’s because most generalist dealers don’t see much of it and so they use the Internet to price. Problem is that an Internet photograph, or any image, rarely shows the qualitative difference between good, great and average pieces. In this case, I think too many Western pickers hitting the midwestern antiques malls have driven up all the jewelry prices, regardless of their quality. Next issue, the odyssey returns to Pennsylvania.

and the absence of intrusive security. They were classy. My only critique is that the coops were originally set up as showcase malls and so there are an abundance of glass cases filled with smalls. I will say that the collapse of the market in 2008 and the subsequent loss of dealers means that many of the cases are now being used by dealers with inexpensive merchandise. I find this frustrating, as it is often not worth the trouble to find someone to let you into the case when you are only interested in a $5 item. I would encourage the malls to unlock the cases and let folks dig in them. Sales would go up for sure. So what did we find? Some nice late studio 20thcentury ceramics and Native American and Hispanic textiles. Both daughters also found something. The latter is always an important thing in our family as both Jane (14) and

of the mega antiques malls in Ohio. I had heard and visited some of these places but never spent a protracted amount of time there. I assumed that I would see lots of Victoriana for sale there, as that was what the Midwest was famous for in the antiques world. What I found was actually an abundance of 20th-century modern pieces in tremendous ranges of quality and pricing. I would say that if you are looking for good Moderne design items in furniture, lighting and other areas that are reasonable, then the Midwest is the place to look. The flip side is that art pottery is pretty highly priced, particularly things like the Rookwood and other early 20th-century art potteries. Nice to see, but pricey to buy. The malls were well run, and I was impressed by things like wagons for hauling the kids through, porters to help you load your car

A rare, handsome men’s Longines wristwatch, originally purchased around the time of World War II and descended in the same Buffalo, N.Y., family ever since, sold for $50,600 at an Advertising, Scientific and Art Auction held May 31 by Cottone Auctions. The sale took place in the firm’s gallery located at 120 Court St. in Geneseo, N.Y. “I’m not sure if this was a new auction record for a men’s Longines watch, but if not I’m sure it came close,” remarked Matt Cottone of Cottone Auctions. The watch, a Model 13 ZN, was a
stainless steel chronograph wristwatch, with two-toned silver dial. Features included a concentric stopwatch, second and minute counter, twobutton start-and-stop reset and a stainless steel case. “This auction was wedged in between two fine art sales, which are typically bigger events, but we were thrilled with the interest in what was a wide variety of merchandise in the many diverse categories,” said Cottone. “The Longines watch, especially, came as a real pleasant surprise. We assigned it a presale estimate of $3,000$5,000, but I guess we forgot to add another zero there.” Around 200 people attended the auction in person, while another 1,000 registered to bid online through LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Telephone and absentee (or left) bids also numbered “in the hundreds, combined,” Cottone
The top lot of the auction was this rare men’s Longines wristwatch from the 1940s. It sold for $50,600.

That’s a real successful sellthrough, I’d say.” The following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include a 15 percent buyer’s premium. The second top lot of the auction was a Chelsea “Wardroom” This oil-on-canvas painting by clock in good running Alexander Levy (1881-1947), titled order, made by the “Bringing Home the Logs,” sold for American Ship Building $6,000. James Christian Seagreaves Pottery Sells At Conestoga Conestoga Auction Company of Manheim, Pa., sold a large assortment of James (Jim) Christian Seagreaves (JCS) pottery on May 30 at their two-day multi-consignor catalog sale. Most of day one was devoted to contemporary folk art, much of it JCS pottery. Jim Seagreaves (19131997) was a revivalist potter from Breiningsville, Pa. He worked as a machinist for much of his life. Making pottery was his second career upon retirement in 1976, although he began potting prior to that. Seagreaves was known for his characteristic blending of styles that incorporated motifs and forms used by traditional Pennsylvania German potters and also that of modern 1950s ceramic art. He was especially known for press molding figural birds and using bold, brightly colored glazes. However, Seagreaves was also prolific on the wheel, where he turned mugs,
bowls, and fat lamps, among other forms. When he died in 1997 the vast majority of his molds were destroyed to prevent reproductions. Seagreaves was known for his use of locally dug clay. Early in his career he had a source in Albany Township, Berks County, near Kempton, Pa. Presentday potter Jeff Dietrich of Kempton owns and often uses Jim Seagreaves’ boxed wheel. On early work, Seagreaves used the initials “JS.” Upon finding out an early potter signed work with the same initials, he soon changed and signed the full “JCS” on the underside of his work. Some work is signed “VAS” by his wife, Verna A. Seagreaves, who also did folk art-inspired paintings. The market today for JCS pottery is quite divergent. Given recent auction prices realized, examples of common forms have cooled from the heyday of the 1990s, yet uncommon examples have escaluated in price. Much of the JCS pottery sold at Conestoga brought modest

Results In From Art, Press, And The Morgan Library And Museum To Exhibit Masterpieces From Oxford Illustrated Books Sale At Swann Galleries On May 8, Swann Mellon University’s Kresge of Miniatures,” compiled by University’s Famed Bodleian Library Galleries conducted a two- Theatre, signed, 1983, which C.G. Williamson, printed on Exhibition Titled “Marks Of Genius: Treasures From The Bodleian Library” Runs Until Sept. 14 The Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford holds one of the greatest collections of books and manuscripts in the world. “Marks of Genius: Treasures from the Bodleian Library,” on view at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City until Sunday, Sept. 14, celebrates more than 2,000 years of the creative genius of authors, composers, artists, scientists, and philosophers preserved in the library’s rich holdings. The exhibition includes items from cultures the world over and ranges from a papyrus fragment of a seventh-century B.C. Sappho poem to a copy of Magna Carta dating to 1217 to key works by novelist Jane Austen. The idea of genius has always been difficult to define and its usefulness has at times been challenged. Nevertheless, the belief in its existence, as a kind of yardstick with which to measure the historical value of human achievement, has informed the building of the collections of the Bodleian and the Morgan Library & Museum. “Marks of Genius” speaks to the many forms the idea can take, highlighting not only the creativity of the conventional “solitary genius,” but also
important innovations undertaken as collaborative efforts. At the heart of the exhibition of almost 60 objects is the notion of genius as being broadly infused across all human endeavors.
The Bodleian Library was founded in 1602 by Sir Thomas Bodley, a diplomat under Queen Elizabeth I, to serve the University of Oxford and the international “republic of the learned.” In 1610 Bodley arranged an agreement with the Stationer’s Company that allowed the library to receive copies “of all new books.” This marks the beginning of the legal deposit and today the institution remains entitled to a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Its
cornerstone holdings include opulent medieval manuscripts, such as the fourteenth-century Romance of Alexander, a 1623 “copyright copy” of the Shakespeare First Folio, and part of Jane Austen’s unpublished novel, “The Watsons,” one of the author’s few existing manuscripts, of which the Morgan owns the other part. “The Bodleian and the Morgan have a long history of cooperation and we are delighted to present this exceptional selection of objects from its collection,” said William M. Griswold, director of the Morgan. “True genius is a rare and extraordinary thing. The works in this show underscore the fact that genius knows no boundaries of time, place, or culture.” Richard Ovenden, the Bodleian’s librarian, said, “The genius of libraries has been the preservation of the records of human civilization. The Bodleian is proud to partner with the Morgan to bring some of the greatest of these records to New York to share with the public through our Marks of Genius show.” The Morgan Library & Museum is located at 225 Madison Ave., at 36th St. in New York City. part auction of Art, Press and Illustrated Books that featured the Edward Gorey collection of Samuel Speigel. Speigel’s collection included some of the most elusive Gorey works and attracted attention from many new bidders. Christine von der Linn, Swann Galleries’ Art Books specialist, said, “The exhibition for this auction was among the best attended we’ve had, and nearly every lot found a buyer. The Gorey collection brought excited new bidders to Swann, and his posters, original artwork and ephemera became the runaway hits of the day.” Indeed, the top Gorey lots were hand-drawn illustrations, one used in the advertisements for “Amphigorey the Musical,” pen and ink,
