The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton and his brother, John W. Fenton, in an old glass factory building in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The Fenton Company was one of the oldest and the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States. The brothers started by painting decorations on glass blanks made by other glass manufacturers. Unable to get the blanks they needed, they decided
to produce their own glass by opening a new factory in Williamstown, W.Va. In 1908, John Fenton decided to leave the company and founded the Millersburg Glass Company in Millersburg, Ohio. Frank Fenton, designer and decorator from 1905 to 1920, was influenced by two other glass companies, Tiffany and Steuben, but the many different colors of glass are

It was mounted to the front of the bike and ridden in an Independence Day parade, said Kit Carter from Louisville, Ky., who priced it at $450. The U.S. flag had the 47th and 48th stars added in 1912 when Arizona and New Mexico were admitted to the Union.

produced perfume bottles made in French opalescent glass with the hobnail pattern. In 1939, Fenton started selling hobnail items in milk glass. Hobnail milk glass would become the top-selling line and allow the Fenton company to expand. Over the next 30 years, the Fenton Art Glass Company continued to expand, despite a large number of glass factories closing down.
Starting in 1970, Fenton added their logo to the bottom of its “Original Formula” Carnival glass pieces to distinguish them from its older Carnival glass pieces. By 1974, Fenton was putting their logo on all pieces they made. On May 24, 2012, the Fenton Art Glass Company announced the sale of selected assets to the Fenton Gift Shops Inc. Thus, the Fenton name will continue to produce types of art glass. From the middle of July to the middle of August, the sales display case at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium will be filled with vintage Fenton Art Glass, all for sale at reasonable prices. The Emporium is located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J., and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursday. Happy antiquing!

Collector Anecdotes And Antics There’s A Good Chance Your Beanie Babies Are Still Worthless By Shawn Surmick For those of you who were fortunate enough to miss out on the rise of the Beanie Baby speculative bubble that graced the mid-1990s, a short recap is in order. Back in 1991, a relatively small and unknown plush novelty manufacturer by the name of Ty Incorporated created a unique line of bean-filled soft toys that went by adorable names. The toys were inexpensive to make and small enough to be easily held in a child’s hand. By 1993, the first line of what would become known as Beanie Babies would enter the marketplace for the very first time. Sales were slow at first, but little by little, demand for the small plush toys grew, and Ty Incorporated took full advantage of the growing trend by allocating production runs and ensuring that some toys would only be available for a limited time. By 1996, the craze swept America, and a speculative but steady secondary market was formed, with Ty Incorporated reeling in massive profits. Several resellers appeared on the scene at a time when the internet was at its infancy, and they were reselling Beanie Babies that had a retail price of around $5 to $6 each for $30 to $50 a piece. Collectibles expert and commenter Harry Rinker
attempted to caution his readers about the growing fad, but sadly his warnings fell on deaf ears, as would-be speculators only saw gold. By the year 2000, the public and fly-by-night collectors grew tired of the fad, and Beanie Babies that were once selling for $50 to $100 or more were plummeting in value. With no new collectors to sell to, the Beanie Baby craze died a painful death and remains one of the most often cited lessons that knowledgeable collectors like to share. Contrary to popular belief, new modern era Beanie Babies are still being sold by Ty Incorporated. They just lack the sought-after speculative craze that catapulted Beanie Babies to renowned success in the mid-1990s, but make no mistake, they are still out there. Fast forward to today, and speculation still drives a lot of the greater collectibles trade. While Beanie Babies are no longer en vogue, things like modern-era toys, licensed Lego products, and video games all fall victim to speculative bubbles from time to time. The overall collectibles marketplace does appear, at first glance, to move in predictable cycles. Some items from my own youth are now being fully desired by fellow collectors who grew up during that same era. The vintage “Star Wars toys, the Nintendo games, and even first-edition Pokemon cards are all highly sought after on the secondary
market in 2018. It is this drive to stay ahead of the supposed curve that is causing some speculators, and even hardcore collectors, to attempt to predict what is going to be in demand next. This is where caution and logic are strongly urged to be placed above emotion and nostalgia. Unfortunately, most speculators use emotion and nostalgia to attempt to justify logic. This reverse thinking is a recipe for disaster. You cannot attempt to justify the investment potential of an item just because you have a strong emotional attachment to it. The collectibles marketplace just does not work that way. Imagine my surprise then, while casually surfing through YouTube one evening, I came across several questionable videos surrounding the supposed increase for demand in Beanie Babies that is supposedly happening now. Each of these videos had thousands of views and showcased current listings from eBay on what recent Beanie Babies had just sold. Upon closer inspection, however, it would appear that the listings used to justify the increased demand for these Beanie Babies were not sold at all. They were simply active listings on eBay with outrageous asking prices. To be fair, there are a handful of early Beanie Babies that DO have value on the secondary market. One such example is Peanut the Royal Blue Elephant. Peanut’s
first release was in a royal dark blue color of which only 500 are known to be created. When Ty realized that the fabric color of Peanut was supposed to be light blue instead of dark blue, they quickly changed it, and, as a result, the 500 known releases now sell for an estimated $500 or more on the secondary market. There are several other valuable examples as well, but would-be speculators should know that almost all of the Beanie Babies ever produced now have a value less than their original retail price back in the 1990s. Don’t believe me? Just check out your local garage sale, then go online and search eBay sold listings (with sold being the key word here). The information provided in YouTube videos like this is both unfortunate and misleading. Since ad revenue is generated for its content creators by the amount of views a video on YouTube gets, YouTube is becoming a haven for unethical marketers who create videos with no truthful content, simply as a means to increase viewership and make money. Sadly, this practice is not just limited to Beanie Babies. Collectors of video games, vintage and modernera toys, Lego, and “Magic: The Gathering products all need to realize that some of the videos currently being shared on YouTube and other social media sites are nothing more than unethical marketers
taking advantage of a much too gullible public. In an upcoming article, I will recommend my top YouTubers devoted to the collectibles trade who have my utmost respect. I always urge readers to use caution when taking any kind of advice on speculation, especially in the antiques and collectibles trade. In conclusion, there is no justifiable reason to ever believe that the glut of overproduced Beanie Babies that still occupy the basements, attics, flea markets, bedrooms, and dumpsters of America will ever have any more value than they did in the mid- to late-1990s. And should that day ever come

when 40- to 50-year-olds are clamoring for vintage beanfilled plush toys of yesteryear, I can assure you that there will be quite enough of them to go around to ensure that no major price increases will be reported for almost all of them. So don’t believe the hype. “Vintage Beanie Babies are not making a return to the collectibles marketplace anytime soon. Until next time, thanks for reading! Shawn Surmick has been an avid collector since the age of 12. He currently resides in his hometown of Boyertown, Pa., and is a passionate collector of antiques and collectibles. Historical And Sporting Gun Collectors Vie For Treasures At Milestone’s Premier Firearms And Militaria Auction Rare Model 1819 J. Hall Breech-Loading Flintlock Rifle Made By Harper’s Ferry Armory Sold For $4,560 On May 26, Milestone Auctions in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, auctioned an 872-lot selection of outstanding antique and vintage firearms and military memorabilia. Spanning several centuries, the varied array of historical guns included many rare and unusual examples made by noted gunsmiths, including one produced at the Harper’s Ferry Armory. “Our team made a concerted effort to put together an auction whose contents were fresh to the market and with price points that allowed everyone to participate. There were many obscure guns for the advanced collector and hundreds of other high-quality firearms that were affordable even to those on a limited budget,” said Milestone Auctions co-owner Miles King. More than 4,000 people registered to bid in the sale, and there was just as much interest in 20th-century material as there was in the coveted centuries-old guns of the Revolutionary War era. Nazi German lots, in particular,
were eagerly pursued by the many World War II collectors who took part, according to King. A Knight’s Cross Certificate awarded to Helmut Naumann, dated June 2, 1941, was handlettered and illuminated on genuine parchment. Signed by Adolf Hitler and presented in a formal red leather case embossed with a gold-leaf Reichs Eagle, it finished its bidding run at $9,000. An early World War II German Gewehr G41 sniper rifle reached $5,520, while a pair of Hitler Youth shoes, mint and unused in the original box, realized $1,170. All prices reported are inclusive of a 20-percent buyer’s premium. A pre-WWII personal flag of General Suzuki Soroku, who served as Japan’s Chief of Army from 1926-30, sold for $3,360 against an estimate of $2,500-$4,500. Another Japanese relic, an Arisaka Type 99 7.7 x 58mm rifle with monopod, sold for $1,020. The U.S. representation spanned wars from the 18th through 20th centuries. A rare

Potter & Potter Auctions’ Gambling Memorabilia Event Is A Royal Flush Signature Event Featuring The Bob Rosenberger Collection Of Books, Apparatus, And Ephemera Scores Nearly $390,000 Collectors hit the jackpot at Potter & Potter’s Gambling Memorabilia Sale on May 19. When the frenzied bidding finally came to an end, 31 lots realized between $1,000$1,999; 37 lots realized between $2,000-$9,999; and three lots exceeded the fivefigure mark. Prices noted include a 20-percent buyer’s premium. Enthusiasts from the four corners of the globe took notice of this sale’s phenomenal collection of antique gambling books. The odds-on favorite for the auction’s top sale was Lot #151, Alfred
Trumble’s “Faro Exposed” or “The Gambler and His Prey, Being a Complete Explanation of the Famous Game, Its Origin and Development, and How Its Skins Are Worked,” did not disappoint. This rare 1882 publication dealing with the subject of advantage play sold for $24,000, a possible new auction record for a book on gambling. Collectors also anted up to Lot #126, F.R. Ritter’s “Advantage Card Playing and Draw Poker.” This book from 1905, featuring the first photograph of a Jacob’s Ladder-style holdout ever printed, Ritter’s 20 rules for playing poker, and images of cards marked with “blockout” work, more than doubled its low estimate to sell for $14,400. This exciting auction also featured a number of additional best sellers in its book category. Lot #7, John Blackbridge’s 1875 “The Complete Poker Player,” realized $2,640. And Lot #139, an original, first-edition copy of R.A. Smith’s “Poker to Win” from 1925, made $1,800. The book included a treatise on card sharping, including false shuffles, false deals, cons, tricks, and other sleight-ofhand poker dodges. Collectors didn’t keep things close to the vest in regards to the spectacular dice, cards, and chips on offer through this sale. Lot #455, a crooked dice making jig with a The Will & Finck brass sleeve holdout pair of dice, rolled to $1,140 on its $100-$200 estimate. Good sold for $12,000.
things came in threes with Lot #467, a trio of scrimshawed ivory mustang dice that more than tripled the high estimate to sell for $1,560. Lot #325, a deck of Steamboat No. 1999 playing cards, made $660 on a $100-$200 estimate. This exceptional deck, which was made by the Dorrity Card Manufacturing Company of New York, featured a very rare joker. You can bet your bottom dollar that this auction presented a breathtaking array of gambling accessories and devices. Lot #254, an adjustable brass card edge notcher with a turned wooden handle, was estimated at $1,200-$2,000 and sold for $5,760. This circa 1890 tool was used to prepare cards for four-pin dealing boxes. And lot #260, a Shiner ring and instruction sheet, ran circles around its $100-$200 estimate to realize $1,320. This reflective piece of jewelry was used to read cards as they were dealt off the top of the deck. Will & Finck’s cheating devices, game accessories, and company ephemera remain the “gold standard” amongst gambling memorabilia collectors today. All eyes were on Lot #249, a circa 1880 Jacob’s Ladder style brass sleeve holdout mounted on a porcelain display hand. Estimated at $3,000-$5,000, it quadrupled its low estimate to realize $12,000. Lot #262, a particularly petite, circa 1880 ivory handled brass card trimmer in its original wooden packing crate, was estimated
The book “Advantage Card Playing and Draw Poker,” published in 1905, sold for $14,400.
“Faro Exposed” or “The Gambler and His Prey” is a rare book, published in 1882, and realized $24,000. at $3,000-$4,000 but shuffled its way to $9,600. And Lot #207, a Will & Finck gambling catalog in its original mailing envelope and a small archive of related company ephemera from 1894, sold for $6,000. It was the only known original Will & Finck gambling supply catalog in private hands. The Gambling Memorabilia Sale came full circle with museum-quality selections of photos, coin-op machines, and other rarities. Lot #488, a circa 1880 traveling roulette wheel in a wooden crate, spun to $7,200, more than seven times its low estimate. The clock was
ticking on Lot #297, a photograph of crowd at a casino in Goldfield, Nev., on Oct. 1, 1910, at midnight. It sold for $1,020. And what made the subject matter of this black and white moment so appealing? Gambling became illegal in the state of Nevada after midnight that day. And finally, bidders took aim at Lot #497, a gambler’s palm pistol with pearl grips that made $9,600, more than twice its high estimate. It was made by the Chicago Fire Arms Co. in 1893 and was accompanied by its original box, a box of 50 cartridges, and three manufacturer’s
parts sheets with prices. “Strong participation in all categories made for a spirited, lively, and profitable auction on Saturday. Highlights included cheating books, including the $24,000 sale of ‘Faro Exposed,’ possibly a record for a book on gambling at auction, as well as gambling devices, poker chips, and rare playing cards. Uncommon trade catalogs also fared well. This was our most successful gambling memorabilia sale to date,” stated Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions. A trio of extraordinary flags and banners sparked a flurry of competitive bidding, boosting the final total from Heritage Auctions’ David and Janice Frent Collection of Presidential and Political Americana, Part Three Auction on June 2 and 3, to $1,152,076, exceeding the pre-auction estimate by nearly 20 percent. This auction was the third presented in the last year by Heritage Auctions featuring portions of the Frent collection. Each has exceeded its pre-auction estimate, and the three have produced a combined total of $3,274,023. Additional portions of the Frent collection are scheduled to be included in at least four more auctions. “Helping to put together the Frent collection has been one of the highlights of my career,” said Heritage Auctions’ Americana Auctions director Tom Slater. “What they have been able to assemble is nothing short of extraordinary, which is why so many of the lots in this auction were pursued so vigorously.”

This single-owner sale will feature unique and diverse examples spanning every stage of firearms development from early matchlocks to the closing days of World War II. A collection of this scope and quality is unlike any other offered in the United States in recent memory. “This collection truly is the stuff dreams are made of, said Jack Lewis, Cowan’s director of firearms and militaria. “It’s the culmination of a half a century of work by one of the great connoisseurs of the collecting world. The auction features historically significant pieces from every century of American history. The absence of a serial number or any indication that a number had ever been inscribed on the weapon suggests that this rifle is the first M1 rifle ever produced by Winchester. From the 18th century comes a trio of British Nock naval volley guns in all three variations. “I don’t know that all three variations of a Nock gun have ever been offered in a single auction, said Lewis. “They rarely come to auction on this side of the Atlantic, so when one comes up at auction lately, it’s been fetching five figures, even in rough condition.
