Daniel Garber’s “Tanis” Returns To The Michener Art Museum For Limited Engagement Famous Painting On Loan From Philadelphia Museum Of Art For Remainder Of 2018 Daniel Garber’s universally celebrated painting “Tanis” will return to the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and remain on view at the Michener through Dec. 30. In 2011, Philadelphia-area philanthropists Marguerite and H. F. Gerry Lenfest presented “Tanis” as a gift to the Philadelphia Museum of Art with the stipulation that the painting be returned on loan to the Michener Art Museum for three months every three years. This year marks its second return under that agreement. Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest are longtime supporters of the Michener Art Museum, which is recognized for its world-class collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, many of them donated to the museum by the Lenfests, as well as its commitment to preserving and presenting the work of other Delaware Valley artists of all eras and creative disciplines. “We are thrilled to welcome ‘Tanis’ back to the Michener Art Museum,” said Barbara Donnelly Bentivoglio, interim executive director of the Michener Art Museum. “We, along with our visitors, marvel about the vast, timeless talents of Daniel Garber. Adding ‘Tanis’ to our galleries gives our visitors an even broader and deeper understanding of Garber’s remarkable legacy.” Four significant figural works by Daniel Garber will be on view at the Michener Art Museum this summer. Three of these works, “Tanis,” “Fanny,” and “Studio Wall,” will be visible to visitors from a single vantage point in the Hankin and Betz Gallery. “A Wooded Watershed,” a 22-by-12-foot mural, is on view in the museum’s Putman Smith Gallery. Daniel Garber (1880-1958) was a central figure in the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement and was one of the most significant and decorated artists of his generation. Born in Indiana, Garber moved east as a teenager to pursue his dream career as an artist. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Europe, Garber

A variety of fresh finds will be showcased at Madison Bouckville’s Big Field Show on Aug. 17, 18, and 19. In the rural country crossroads of upstate New York, between Syracuse and Hamilton, there is a gem of an antiques show, the Madison Bouckville Big Field, which will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 17, 18, and 19. It is where shoppers come to find freshto-the-market antiques. Steve Allman is in his fifth year running

settled down to painting in his home, Cuttalossa, in Lumberville, Pa. Garber’s style combines realism and fantasy, precise draftsmanship and decorative technique, emblazoning all in vibrant, shimmering colors. A landscape artist, Garber was best known for his paintings of Bucks County woods and quarries. To a greater extent than many of his New Hope colleagues, Garber also achieved recognition as a figure painter. A leading instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over 40 years, Garber influenced younger generations of painters as well. Among the Garber works in the Michener Art Museum’s permanent collection are the mural “A Wooded Watershed,” along with several paintings including “Up the Cutalossa” (1915), “April 30” (1953), and “Springtime in the Village” (1917). The Michener Art Museum’s permanent holdings include nine additional Garber paintings as well as 70 prints and drawings by the artist. An exhibition currently on view at the Michener Art Museum titled “American Moderns: The Legacy of Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest” showcases modernist work donated to the Michener Art Museum by the Lenfests. The Michener Art Museum is located at 138 South Pine St., Doylestown, Pa. For more information, readers may call 215-340-9800 or visit www.MichenerArtMuseum.org.

Peggy And David Rockefeller Collection Sale: A True American Success Story Wide Array Of Art And Decorative Accessories Sold Well At Nadeau’s Nadeau’s in Windsor, Conn., held a large sale for the Peggy and David Rockefeller estate on June 2. The auction featured a full spectrum of items from a number of the family’s residences and provided a tantalizing snapshot of their “everyday” lives and interests. A recent series of sales held by Christie’s in New York City for the Rockefellers totaled roughly $1 billion. At Nadeau’s, 102 items were sold between $1,000-$4,999; 10 items made $5,000-$9,999; and four realized over $10,000. Prices noted here

include the company’s buyer’s premium. The Rockefeller family name, world-class art, and philanthropy are practically synonymous. The family were avid art and antiques collectors of countless styles and periods and among the nation’s leaders in philanthropic endeavors. Good things came in threes at this sale with a trio of hand-signed bullfighting themed aquatints by Pablo Picasso. Each was estimated at $5,000-$10,000, was part of an original set of 12 copies, was #3 of 12, and had its original collection of Nelson A. Rockefeller and collection of David Rockefeller labels on verso. The first, lot #350, was titled “Muerte Del Toro” (Death of the Bull) and made $20,740. The second, lot #351, was titled “El Matador Brinda La Muerte Del Toro” (The The sculpture “Toro” by H. Peraza Matador Brings the Death of realized $2,750. the Bull), and sold for $14,400. And the third was lot #352, titled “El Torero Sale En Hombros de los Aficionados” (Bullfighter Exits On Amateur Shoulders), which realized $15,600. Also catching bidders’

Outstanding bronzes depicting animals were also heavy metal favorites in this sale. Lot #109, Humberto Peraza’s signed “Toro” statue of a bull on the run, sold for

$2,750, over 13 times its low estimate. And lot #153, Philip Grausman’s signed and numbered grasshopper statue, leapt to $7,200 on its $500$1,000 estimate. This statue was one of many insectthemed decorative items featured in this sale. The Rockefeller family is also known for its deep and longstanding commitment to Asia and, in turn, Asian arts. This involvement started as far back as in the mid-1860s. Examples of Japanese and Chinese porcelains, pottery, jade, and paintings that graced the walls, shelves, and bookcases of various Rockefeller The bronze “Grasshopper” by P. homes were well represented in this sale. Furniture, furnishings, and rugs were also key categories

in this sale, with tables, chairs, tables, and display cases from many eras and genres on offer. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Collecting Native American Items

Having lived and worked in the American Southwest, I have a real passion for Native American antiques. It is something that I loved before I moved there and have continued to pursue since leaving. The subject is one that is not for the faint of heart, not because there are abundant fakes, but rather because so little is known about many of

American work is clear and obvious. Despite collectors who want only pure Indian items, the reality is that most 19th, 20th and 21st century items reflect outside influences. Condition and quality of design/construction are important. Being broken and damaged is pretty fatal to the piece. Irregular lines and design are not naïve but rather poor quality. Spend the time to understand those differences. Surface is all important. What I reference here is the aesthetic among western collectors that jewelry, textiles, and beadwork all need to have a surface that reflects the age of the piece. Washing Indian blankets, unless done by the most skilled conservator,

almost always ruins the item. Native jewelry polished within an inch of its life also sucks the value out of the piece. This is a case where crusty and old is a sign of originality. The Southwest is not necessarily the place to buy fresh old Native American items. People forget that tourists were the original buyers of many of these pieces, and they brought them home whether to the Midwest, East or Pacific coast. Those are the places to find the great treasures. Buy what you like, but learn about it as well. I collect Native American clothing, and it is a difficult subject to say the least. I spend much more time studying it rather than buying it.

the pieces. One can buy all the reference books, go to the museum exhibits, and visit a lot of galleries and still feel they have barely scratched the surface. When I worked out West, the museum that I ran had a large collection of Native American items, and it was a real treat to be able to study them closely. The lessons that I learned have profoundly changed how I make decisions for my own collection today. Age is nearly impossible to determine for many Native American items. I am not referencing pre-1880 items, but rather the 1880 to 1980 period when styles became so blended. The influence of Hispanic and Anglo designs upon Native

He holds an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interiPeter Seibert, a native or design, and history.

I really do encourage you to go out and study, embrace and maybe buy a Native American antique. If you are not comfortable with buying an old piece, then consider a new example of Native American art. There are many incredibly talented contemporary Native American artists whose work is definitely an antique of the future.

in America and abroad, inspiring generations for the last 75 years.” “Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt and the Four Freedoms” includes a range of artwork in addition to Rockwell’s celebrated images of the Four Freedoms. These include paintings, illustrations, prints and more by both Rockwell and a broad range of his contemporaries, from J.C. Leyendecker and Mead Schaeffer to Arthur Szyk, Ben Shahn and Dorothea Lange, among others. The era is brought to life through a number of channels, including historical documents, photographs, videos, interactive digital displays, immersive settings and artifacts. “The exhibition will show how Rockwell’s aspirational paintings shifted American attitudes towards engagement in World War II in defense of the free world and, ultimately, helped to make the case for universal human rights,” said Norman Rockwell Museum director Laurie Norton Moffatt. “In highlighting Rockwell’s and his generation’s response to the call for unity in support of these fundamental freedoms, the exhibition resonates powerfully with our own time.” To date, the 2018 exhibition tour comprises The New-York Historical Society, New York, N.Y. This sale offered collectors a few golden opportunities to purchase jewelry and other personal items from the Rockefeller estate. Lot #2, a pair of Cartier 18-carat cufflinks decorated with red and black enamel tops, sold for $2,000. And lot #5a, a sterling silver match safe, inscribed “DR The White House,” made $445. This exciting and highly anticipated sale rounded out with robust selections of crystal and barware, tableware, books, souvenirs, linens, and other “routine” household items. And, like most auctions, it also offered up some notable bargains for a number of savvy, or lucky, bidders. Lot #55, a large, signed Steuben footed bowl inscribed with the initials “DR,” found a new home at $191 (est. $200-$400). And lot #301, a large, framed and signed c-print photograph from the early 2000s by Michael Wesely capturing MoMA’s expansion and renovation, made $2,520 on its

$4,000-$8,000 estimate. “It was an honor and privilege to offer part of the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection through our Connecticut gallery. We had no idea how much global interest it would generate and are thrilled with the results. I’m not surprised that the Picasso trio rose to the top of this sale, given how the recent sale of other Picasso works in New York has again put this artist in the spotlight. It is also astounding to me how many items made five or ten times their estimates. This only validates the status of the Rockefeller family, and their unmatched contributions to American culture, business, and politics,” stated Ed Nadeau, president of Nadeau’s Auction Gallery. Uh-oh. It’s almost bedtime on a school night, and you just remembered that your book report on “Moby Dick” is due tomorrow, and you haven’t written it, or even read the book. In fact, you don’t even have the book. It’s still in your school locker. Worst of all, your seventh-grade English teacher is a real dragon lady. With her, “I forgot” won’t cut it. What to do? Wait a minute, where’s that stuff Grandma sent for your birthday? Those Classics Illustrated comic books she called an “introduction to great literature,” meant to take your mind off Superman. Ah, there they are, way back in the closet. Let’s see, “Captains Courageous,” “Silas Marner,” “Ivanhoe,” there it is,

“Moby Dick.” Crisis averted. This time, anyway. For young procrastinators of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, Classics Illustrated (CI) comics, with their easy-toskim-through condensations of popular novels, often saved the day. These “Cliff’s Notes” for the pre-college set offered up the gist of their stories in easy-to-digest sound bites, complete with pictures. And, while usually not the first choice of those spinning the drug store comic book rack, there’s no denying that Classics Illustrated comics had their own unique appeal. The brainchild of publisher Albert Kanter, CI came into being in 1941 as Classic Comics. The first issue was “The Three Musketeers.” By 1948, the now-renamed Classics Illustrated was 48 pages and a bargain at just 10 cents an issue. Book reports aside, Classics Illustrated had plenty to offer those willing to temporarily forsake their favorite superheroes. The colorful artwork, by some of the era’s most accomplished commercial illustrators, focused on each story’s adventurous moments, now and then quite graphically. (Dr. Frederic Wertham’s 1954 diatribe against comic books, “The Seduction of the Innocent,” specifically singled out CI’s lurid retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). But for the most part, Classics Illustrated were comic books Grandma could feel comfortable giving (and reading). Each issue’s “extras” included a bio of the author, plus one-page essays on related topics. For “The First Men in the Moon” by H.G. Wells, it was “Celestial Streaks.” Unlike other comic books, there were few ads, except for CI-related paraphernalia and promos for the magazine’s sister publication, Classics Illustrated Junior, which featured “best loved stories from

Dining By Design: Nature Displayed On The Dinner Table A Dazzling Display Of Dining Design Inspired By The Natural World On View At Winterthur

The centerpiece-grand platt menage, sweetmeat or pickle stand, by an unknown maker, 1775-90, is earthenware, and was a museum purchase with funds provided by the Henry Francis du Pont Collectors Circle, 2000.5.

Viewers will be introduced to some of the ways in which consumers purchased their dinnerware. For centuries, the famous Dutch and British East India Companies controlled much of the world’s trade, including household goods such as dinnerware in exotic new materials and forms. As time passed and a broader range of affordable choices became available, some consumers special-ordered wares for the table or made design choices using factory pattern books. A dramatic tureenpyramid in this section will hint at the range of decorative patterns that were available. Nearby, a stunning display of dishes will help viewers consider some of the many ways to acquire food. A tureen in the form of a boar’s head (complete with arrows!) and another shaped like a cooked goose will help illustrate the theme of hunting. In the fishing section, a silver sea turtle tureen will swim serenely near a dish in the form of a bucket of codfish. A hen-andchicks shape vessel will help illustrate the availability of meats from domestic animals, and dishes in the forms of melons and cauliflower will

A visual feast of flora and fauna awaits visitors to “Dining by Design: Nature Displayed on the Dinner Table,” on view at Winterthur until Jan. 6, 2019. This major exhibition takes a fresh look at the history of dining and dinnerware from the 1600s onward and celebrates how hosts and hostesses have brought the natural world into their dining rooms. Everything from painted butterflies and hand-modeled flowers to tureens in the shapes of the foods served in them are on view, set among a fascinating range of ceramic and silver tableware. “While many things have changed in our world, the love of nature-inspired motifs as part of the dining experience continues from the past to today,” said Leslie Grigsby, senior curator of ceramics and glass and curator of the exhibition. “Foods were drawn from the bounty of nature, and dishes were created in the shapes of animals, birds, fruit and flowers or bore designs after such inspirations. In addition to their beauty, some patterns had special meaning and many provide clues to the original owner’s background or social status.”

Middle Eastern And Mediterranean Landscapes By Renowned Hartford Artist Frederic Church On Display “Frederic Church: A Painter’s Pilgrimage” On View At Wadsworth Atheneum The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is presenting “Frederic Church: A Painter’s Pilgrimage,” bringing together approximately 50 of the celebrated Hudson River School painter’s compositions of sacred terrain in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Frederic Edwin Church (18261900) was born in Hartford, Conn., and had deep ties to the Wadsworth Atheneum, which maintains significant holdings of his early landscapes. Organized by Kenneth J. Myers, curator of American art at the Detroit Institute of Arts, “Frederic Church: A Painter’s Pilgrimage” explores the enduring appeal of pilgrimage through a lesserknown body of work resulting from the artist’s journey to powerful sites of spiritual and historical significance in the late 1860s. The exhibition is on view through Sunday, Aug. 26. A leading painter of 19thcentury America, Frederic Church was the most popular and financially successful painter in the United States during his lifetime. As a young artist Church’s first formal training was facilitated by Atheneum founder Daniel Wadsworth, who arranged for Church’s apprenticeship with painter Thomas Cole, the father of the Hudson River School. As he further established his career, Church traveled to remote places to

foster conversation around the destruction and urgent need for preservation of cultural heritage sites in the 21st century.” The impact of Church’s Middle Eastern travels is readily apparent at Olana, the elaborate home and studio he designed on a 250-acre estate in Hudson, N.Y. Now a historic property, Olana’s prominent features include towers and block masonry, fanciful windows and porches and Middle Eastern motifs executed in colored brick, wood, slate, ceramic tile and stenciling; select sketches by Church in preparation for Olana will feature in the exhibition. A selection of objects chosen for the Hartford exhibition from the Wadsworth Atheneum’s collection ranges from antiquities to 19th-century sculpture and costume, evidencing the history of pilgrimages to the Holy Land and bringing to life the deep American interest in connecting to this part of the world. An illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition. Exhibition Support This exhibition has been organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts. Generous

compares numerous studies completed during Church’s expeditions with his final major paintings, offering insight into his artistic process. Whereas Church’s American-themed canvases, including depictions of Niagara Falls and the coast of Maine, captured the sublime in nature, his views of holy sites concentrated on human history. Church paid homage to the sacred grounds and ancient past through an emphasis on architectural ruins, broken columns, arches and tumbled walls. “These historic views are especially compelling and relevant now,” says Monroe. “It is a chance to

Railroad Lanterns Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos In the dark of 19th century nights, railroad lanterns allowed railroad workers to signal each other for any number of things, like telling the engineer to speed up or slow down or to back up or move ahead. Stories are told of catastrophes that were averted through the use of lantern signals, and no doubt a good number of those tales are true. While signal flags could be used during daylight hours, they couldn’t be seen after dark, nor could voices be heard calling out over the noise of the train or train stations. Railroad lanterns were an efficient and effective way to communicate necessary information; today they offer a glimpse of bygone times before GPS and technology took over. Authentic old railroad

with modern fake railroad tags in order to increase their value from $10 or less to hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the buyer’s perception of its rarity and collectability. Another trick involving old lanterns is fakers who take apart an antique lantern, emboss a railroad’s name into the metal (especially a rarer name), then solder the parts back together. Look for uneven lettering, smaller letters, new solder, gaps, or overall sloppy workmanship. It’s also important to know the types of railroad lanterns made by the supposed manufacturer whose name appears on the lantern, as well as being able to recognize barn, wagon, and traffic lanterns, as well as antique headlight lamps, all of which are sometimes misrepresented as railroad items. Some other general things to watch out for include brass or copper

Reproduction glass lantern globes have been appearing on the market for some time now, and some are complete with the name of the railroad embossed into the glass. Most of these are believed to be imported from India. Sometimes you’ll find a barn lamp with a replaced globe that bears the markings of a railroad; these appear to be etched when viewed online, but many are actually decals that can’t be detected until you see them in person. Some other things to watch for are glass that’s too thin or too thick, of the wrong color, clear glass with a bluish tinge when viewed at an angle, and wellsanded rims. W.T. lanterns have attracted collectors and even interior designers for many years. With this level of interest, it’s no wonder there are fakes and reproductions in this intriguing field. Many reproductions are made with no intention of fooling buyers, but some resellers artificially age these lanterns, which can be purchased for $40 or less when new, and misrepresent them to unsuspecting buyers as original antiques, selling them for hundreds of dollars. One manufacturer of these reproductions is Tallin Mfg. Co., which produced the “Tallin Mfg. Co. No. 20 Reflector Lantern” in the 1980s in India. This repro has totally fake patent dates “stamped into the vertical air tube” (lanternnet.com); the lanterns are copies of the authentic C.T. Ham Mfg. Co. #20 Reflector Lantern. They also have frosted white globes, which no authentic antique lanterns had in their time. Have you seen any Central Union and Pacific Railroad lanterns around? If you have, you’ve seen a total fabrication of a railroad lantern. Not only is this fake, not a true copy of any authentic American lantern, but there never was a Central Union and Pacific Railroad in existence. There was a Central Pacific Railroad and a Union Pacific Railroad, but the two names were never merged as one single railroad. This brass lantern with faked patina is a “copy of a European copy of a Dietz Junior” (lanternnet.com) and was made in India or China. This fake model has also been seen with Wells Fargo Co. tags. Some authentic old lanterns have been equipped
