Memorial Park, across from City Hall, was the setting, which was filled with over 50 antique dealers and artisans to greet the large crowds that came through out the day. Chris Glinton and Paul Daugevelo of Ros-Al Antiques and Events were the sponsors of the event, with stores in Carbondale, Forest City, and Hawley, Pa. “Our expectations were met, and our concept of multi-events happening simultaneously all day long is a great draw to the public.
Crocker Farm Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Blockbuster Auction A rare five-gallon stoneware churn with four slip-decorated marching Civil War soldiers sold for $402,500 at Crocker Farm’s 10th anniversary auction on July 19. The Zipps of Crocker Farm, a Maryland-based auction company specializing in American stoneware and redware, sold the unique churn, likely from Fort Edward, N.Y., as the first lot in their 507-lot sale. The buyer was New York City collector Jerry Lauren bidding by phone. Jerry Lauren is the older brother of Ralph Lauren and

executive vice president of the fashion empire the Ralph Lauren Corporation. He is a well-known collector of American folk art including weathervanes, decoys, and stoneware. The underbidder was also a collector bidding on the phone. The hammer price of $350,000 was the highest hammer price for American stoneware at auction (Crocker Farm charges a 15 percent buyer’s premium). The Absalom Stedman ovoid jug with spread-wing eagle decoration, which sold for $402,900 on May 5, 2012, at Pook & Pook, is still the highest priced piece of stoneware sold at auction including buyer’s premium. The circa-1865 churn is 15.5 inches tall and was estimated at $25,000-$35,000. It was consigned by a small East Coast museum that “wishes to remain anonymous,” according to Tony Zipp. It was purchased in the 1930s and donated to the institution sometime in the 1960s. The museum is undergoing a building project, which was the reason given to why it was consigned. For additional information, visit www.crocker farm.com.

While every generation is influenced by pop culture, the widespread impact of HG/TV and similar networks and shows has influenced collecting. Lets talk about these in a little more detail. At the Millicent Rogers Museum, we see people who want to purchase jewelry all the time. The difference is that Boomers assume that they are getting a good deal while Gen X and Millenials will pull out a smartphone and do their research on the spot. How do

This is the next article about my first trip back East to the antiques markets of Pennsylvania. In the former articles, I looked at the mega-malls of Ohio and some old favorites in central Pennsylvania. As I noted in my last column, the market still seems to be in flux, with prices varying, often extremely, based around geography. I postulated that it was because of the irregular economic recovery and that the dealers who now dominate the trade are pricing to sell antiques. Let me expand upon this. For years, I have seen dealers set-up displays at flea markets, antique malls and even in their own shops where they “offer” parts of their collections for sale. What one first notices is that the prices are
antiques and have terrible taste.” Hmmm….sounds like “why can’t they be like we are, perfect in every way, what’s the matter with kids today?” The differences between Boomers and Gen X and Millenials are very fundamental. I would argue that a couple of those differences are: 1) The use of technology. Gen X and Millenials use technology to price shop for everything. 2) A different sense of nostalgia. Gen X and Millenials grew up in vastly complex and different family situations. As a result, their

double, triple and quadruple what they should be. Second, if they do decide to talk to you, what you will find is that they have been told to set-up and sell stuff by a spouse who is tired of the collection dominating the house. So, they price it high in the hopes that no one will buy anything and if someone does buy…then a high price then justifies getting rid of the item. These “museum dealers” dominated a lot of malls and flea markets for years. Now, many are gone and we are seeing prices shaking out as their influence wanes. I spent some time talking to some friends who are dealers down in Shrewsbury, Pa. The issues that they raised with me were how to target new audiences. Its clear the market is struggling with the decline of the Baby Boomers as the major buying force in the trade. What does that mean for the future of collecting? Well, let me begin by saying that I get frustrated…okay, let’s be honest…really angry at the folks who say that young people “don’t know anything about

many common interests in addition to toys,” said Hathazy. “I’ve been a Morphy’s customer, so I’ve seen that side of his operation and, on the other hand, I’ve worked with Dan at other business levels over the past 10 years, so I know how he conducts himself. His word is his bond, and he has a strong entrepreneurial spirit. That’s one of the reasons I’ve joined Morphy Auctions. I know Dan will invest that passion, and his well-proven way of

When I started school in 1969, I was unique as the product of divorced parents. When I graduated high school in 1983, 55 percent of our class was living with one parent. This is significant as to how we view antiques and particularly the nostalgia for the past. Living with multiple parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles has meant that there are few common points of familiarity. The annual connection to grandma’s house for Christmas each year (and the antiques associated with it) may not exist if there are four sets of grandparents (assuming remarriages). These two factors have been significant in the changing face of antiques. However, the impact of popular culture decorating shows may be the biggest factor in the changing face of collecting. Next issue, we talk about that topic!

ringside for Life Magazine. The bout was quite literally the most star-studded event in Big Apple sports history.” Ali dominated the early rounds with deft footwork and a pumping jab. Frazier stalked the elusive former Champ, looking to uncork the devastating left hook that had spelled doom for many of his earlier victims. Slowly the tide began to turn as the fight wore on, Frazier’s sledgehammer blows exposing the “ring rust” on the former Champion. Ali continued to paw at Frazier’s face but the answers came with far more punishing authority and, in the late rounds, it was evident that only a knockout could salvage the night for the Louisville Lip. “It was Ali that nearly ended up getting knocked out in the fifteenth round at 2:34,”
said Ivy. “It was the exclamation point to Frazier’s dominating victory. All three judges declared Frazier the victor, setting the stage for the 1974 rematch at MSG (Madison Square Garden) and the historic finale to the trilogy at Manila in 1975.” These gloves, according to Heritage specialists, are the most significant boxing gloves to reach the auction block since those worn by Ali to claim his first World Championship from Sonny Liston in 1964 drew a final bid of $836,500 in a Heritage auction in New York City. Like those gloves, these derive from the personal collection of Ali’s renowned trainer Angelo Dundee. This first professional loss for Muhammad Ali gave birth to the narrative that the former Champion was now a “has-been” who should have remained in exile from the sport, setting the stage for what may be his most celebrated victory against the heavily-favored George Foreman in Zaire. Though Ali would publicly decry the loss, he privately acknowledged the legitimacy of Frazier’s victory, setting a course for his own redefinition from an arrogant invincible to resilient three-time Champion of the World. “In order to be a threetime World Champion, Ali had to lose twice,” said Ivy. “This was the fight that steeled his resolve and set him firmly on the path to becoming the Greatest of All Time and one of the most beloved athletes of any sport or any nation in history.” For additional information, visit www.HA.com.

Muhammad Ali Fight-Worn Gloves From 1971 “Fight of the Century” A g a i n s t J o e F r a z i e r T o C o m e T o A u c ti o n The gloves that Muhammad Ali wore in his 1971 Championship bout against Joe Frazier, the first of three fights between the two giants of pugilism, which would culminate in the legendary “Thrilla in Manila,” will cross the auction block on Thursday, July 31, in Heritage Auctions’ Sports Collectibles Platinum Night auction at The House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio. “This match was billed as ‘The Fight of the Century,’ and, despite the fact that Ali lost, it more than lived up to its billing,” said Chris Ivy. “It was a controversial fight at a controversial time in America and the bout took on distinctly political and cultural overtones. These gloves are more than sports memorabilia; they’re artifacts of early1970s American Pop Culture.” At the time, both fighters owned a legitimate claim to the Heavyweight Championship of the World, though only Frazier held the title officially. Ali’s reign, which had begun in 1964 when he had beaten Sonny Liston, ended because of his refusal to enter the Vietnam draft. He became the most polarizing figure in American sports, fueling an antipathy within a segment of the American populace unseen since the reign of Jack Johnson. The country was polarized around the match: those who supported the Vietnam War and the failing cause of racial segregation vs. the anti-war crowd and those who favored the Civil Rights movement. “To top it off, each

The Memories Are Free And Priceless One Woman’s Account Of Her First Auction And The Connection Antiques Can Foster By Jamie Mitchell
Mary Hughes was one of my many “grandmothers” when I was growing up. I loved exploring her big Victorian home, and I especially loved racing down the dark secret staircase that curved wildly from the upstairs back bedroom to the brightly lit kitchen. That staircase was just dark enough to be scary, so I had to be careful not to throw open the door in my haste because it would bump into the round ornate kitchen table that didn’t quite tuck into the alcove. Magically, that table always held a plate of cookies right around snack time. My family’s backyard abutted hers and there were countless times when I raced across the yard, anxious to sit in Mary’s cozy kitchen, to munch on cookies and to share my adventures of the day with her. I took Mary’s passing hard, but I took her estate sale even harder. I guess I was maybe eight years old, and I was angry at all these strangers trampling around in Mary’s garden, the grass flattened under their heavy feet as they pawed over Mary’s things. Her chenille bedspread was carelessly tossed in a dirty box on the ground. Her cast iron skillet left chips on her “everyday” china as it was weighed by one

pierce carved back rocker, laminated, made of walnut with gold upholstery. The other is a walnut laminated pierce carved back rococo arm chair. Also sold will be a walnut Victorian three-piece bedroom suite, featuring a sizable bed (9 feet 2 inches tall), a dresser and wash stand. The Walter Place auction in July was a huge success, both on site and online. Sold were most of the contents of the spectacular antebellum mansion home that was completed in 1859 and used as a Union Army camp and officers’ quarters during the Civil War. During the Union occupation the grounds became a sea of tents. At one time Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his family lived there. The top lot of that auction was an oil painting by Britishborn American artist Hamilton Hamilton (18471928). The 49-by-45-inch painting was done around 1900 and depicted the artist’s two daughters in a garden. It sold to a New York art collector for $47,150. Also, an oilon-canvas of a lady in a Tudor

Dunton’s work. One of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915, Dunton was best known for painting the untamed West before it disappeared. His paintings have sold for as much as $800,000, and a similar painting of mule deer sold in 2007 in Idaho for more than $400,000. A painting titled “Women in the Marketplace” by Diego Rivera will be estimated at
buyer and the next. I cried and begged my father to buy everything. “Please Daddy,” I sobbed, “Don’t let Mary go!” The bang of the auctioneer’s gavel rang like another shot to my heart as those random strangers carried Mary away from me piece by piece. Now, I am one of those strangers. At a recent auction, a copper-plated frame and baby shoes complete with the smiling baby’s christening portrait came on the block. Mary had one of those on the mantle in her parlor. She was so proud of preserving her daughter this way, I would catch her stroking the shoes and looking at the portrait with such love and longing it was as if she were trying to wish her daughter back in time. Sitting at that auction, I thought of bidding on those copper-plated baby shoes to bring a bit of Mary home. Luckily, someone else bid and I was brought back to the reality of the auction. Could you image what would happen if we bought every item that stirred a memory in us? Memories like this are one of the reasons I spend my days in the company of other collectors and dealers searching for the perfect piece to add to our shop or collection. The psychic payment of reliving our best memories is… well.. priceless. dress by Ramsay Reinagle (1785-1862) sold for $5,750. From the furniture category, a mahogany period Southern hunt board with tapered legs and four drawers, still with the original pulls and made prior to the Civil War around 1840, sold for $12,650. Also, a Victorian walnut rococo corner cabinet étagère, made circa 1850 and with a marble top and a beautiful carving on the door, impressive at 84 inches tall, topped out at $4,600. A palatial gold Victorian pier mirror with marble base and ornate grape leaf and cherub frame, made around 1850 and brought from St. Louis to Walter Place in 1903, monumental in size at 16 feet 3 inches tall by 53 inches wide, realized $10,350, and an over-the-mantle mirror with an Egyptian Victorian pharaoh’s face crown, 6 feet 11 inches by 6 feet 3 inches, coasted to $4,830. Some of the antiques sold out of Walter Place were original to the residence and hadn’t been sold or moved since 1859. This outstanding group of more than 70 tennis images from a private Australian collection offers a wide variety of vintage advertisements and covers more than a century. There are works by the biggest names in design, remarkable ads for famous tournaments by unknown artists and posters that depict fashionable athletes in their finest tennis gear. Examples include Ludwig Hohlwein’s stylish image of a coffee drinker with his racket tucked under one arm for Kaffee Hag, Munich, 1913 (estimate $15,000 to $20,000); Roger Broders’ colorful circa 1930 tourism image for Monte-Carlo, which depicts a bird’s eye view of tennis courts along the Mediterranean coast and glamorous country club members ($15,000 to $20,000); Tom Purvis’ horizontal-format poster for Harrogate, with the tag “The British Spa,” London, 1930 ($6,000 to $9,000); and Louis C. Kalff’s Nationale Lawn,
A poster with the famous British slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On,” by an unknown designer, 1939, is estimated at $12,000 to $18,000.
Tennis Kampioenschappen, Delft, 1922 ($5,000 to $7,500). Sporting images of another variety featured in the sale are auto-racing posters, the finest of which are by Geo Ham, including his Monaco/5ème Grand Prix Automobile, 1933, for the formula one motor race through the streets of Monte Carlo ($10,000 to $15,000) and Monaco, 1936, which depicts the battle between the Germans and the Italians in the race ($6,000 to $9,000). This summer marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and although Swann Galleries has been featuring World War posters as a regular part of their August auctions since 2003, this year is special. Among the more than 75 posters from World War I is the most well-known poster of all time, James Montgomery Flagg’s “I Want You,” New York, 1917 ($7,000 to $10,000); the rare and horrifying “Destroy This Mad Brute” by H.R. Hopps, circa 1917, ($15,000 to $20,000); as well as British, French, Canadian and even Australian images from the Great War. The Second World War is also well-represented with war bond promotions, anti-Nazi images and what has sparked in recent years countless imitations, the British crown and enduring slogan, “Keep Calm and Carry On,” done by an unknown designer in 1939. This poster is only the second example in the 30-by-20-inch size to come to auction ($12,000 to $18,000). Tempting warm-weather images include several examples by Roger Broders, such as Antibes, circa 1928 ($8,000 to $12,000); Agay, 1928 ($4,000 to $6,000); La Plage De Calvi, Corse, 1928 ($8,000 to $12,000); and Sur la Cote d’Azur, circa 1931 ($7,000 to $10,000); as well as Michel Bouchaud’s “La Plage De Monte Carlo,” 1929 ($5,000 to $7,500) and Leonetto Cappiello’s “Nice,” 1927 ($4,000 to $6,000).
This “National Tennis Week” poster by an unknown designer is estimated at $700 to $1,000.
A trio of posters promoting Buffalo Bill are also among the sale highlights. Paul Frenzeny’s image of a young Buffalo Bill, “The Scout from 1888,” shows him with a smoking rifle and brown hair ($4,000 to $6,000), while two posters by unknown artists depict the showman as we’re used to seeing him. Col. W.F. Cody/”Buffalo Bill,” 1908, is a classic image with him astride his horse and doffing his
