An Important Steuben Vase Shines In Garth’s July Sale n July 24 and 25, Garth’s hosted a two-day auction of Asian art, fine and vintage jewelry, iconic 20thcentury design, and European furniture and decorative arts. Over 1,000 lots crossed the block inside Garth’s historic barn located in Delaware, Ohio. Amelia Jeffers, president of Garth’s Auctions, commented on the flurry of Internet activity, “There was tremendous Internet activity on the entire auction. Conservative estimates (using analytics that track our website and catalogs on just two of the five websites on which we post our auctions) put online lot views in the neighborhood of 400,000. Online bidders represented over $430,000 in bidding power. We work hard on the social media and digital catalog side of the business. We have tried to develop the same kind of cultish following there as Garth’s has always enjoyed from our “person-to-person” clients. It is paying off. The average visitor to our website views 18 pages and stays on the site for almost 10 minutes, exceedingly long when marketers talk about 60 second attention spans.” The shining star of the sale was an engraved Steuben vase by Fernand Legar, which sold after competitive bidding to a phone bidder for $78,000. The vase came to Garth’s from a private collector in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and was originally purchased in 1940 directly from Steuben on Fifth Avenue. The vase descended through the family until this sale. “Garth’s works aggressively to engage technology to our advantage when marketing the auctions, there is still nothing like a good old

fashioned phone call. It’s that personal touch, which Garth’s is known for, that has a lot to do with the big price on the Steuben vase. Garth’s has always been known as a warm, friendly, and helpful place, and nothing about that is going to change. It is who we are,” said Jeff Jeffers, CEO of Garth’s. Silver glittered over the course of the two-day sale as well. An early 20th-century three-piece silver tea set brought $ 3 , 2 4 0 against a presale estimate of $200-$400. A pair of Regency candlesticks, marked for Sheffield, 1822-3, and John Green and Company crossed the block for $1,560, while a silver tea and coffee service from Tuttle Silversmiths, Boston, Mass., in the Paul Revere pattern, brought $2,520. including a teapot, a pair of tazzas, and additional accessories sold for $4,500. Other notable lots from the Asian art session included a jade belt hook from the first half of the 19th century, which sold for $5,400. The piece was made of white and green jade with a delicately carved dragon and hydra and mounted on inlaid satinwood. An archer’s ring, also in white jade, tripled it’s high estimate and sold for $2,520. A pale green and white two-piece jade buckle also sparked bidder’s interest and sold for $1,320. Green continued to be in favor as the auctioneer moved into the fine and vintage jewelry session later the same day. An American, 20th-century square emerald cut ring sold for $12,000. Chairs continued to stay in high demand throughout the session and after some aggressive bidding, a pair of Elizabeth lounge chairs by I.B. Kofod-Larsen for Christensen & Larsen sold for $17,400 to a phone bidder. A pair of blue vinyl swan chairs by This pair of candlesticks sold for $4,200. noted that a lot of these toys were initially collected and hoarded by enthusiasts and speculators alike. As a result, most collectors are only looking for brand new factory sealed action figures and play sets. Many collectors are attempting to establish a set of the first original ten action figures that appeared on store shelves back in 1988. These include the following 10 characters and are simply known solely as 10-backs due to the amount of characters prominently displayed on the back of each action figure’s packaging: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter, Shredder, Foot Soldier, April O’Neil, Bebop, and Rocksteady.

decided to purchase the full rights to the franchise directly from Mirage Studios. Today the series is still going strong and is back to being a much more kid friendly series. It would seem that there is just no stopping the enduring popularity of everyone’s favorite “heroes in a half shell. Even as I write this article a new live action movie starring Megan Fox is set to be released into theaters. The nation-wide release date was August 8. With the popularity of toy collecting in full force, it should come as no surprise that the original Playmates line of toys is quickly becoming one of the most coveted toy series on the collector’s market today. In May of 1984 an independent comic book publisher by the name of Mirage Studios released a highly original comic book series with little fanfare. The first issue of the series was done completely in black and white and released in extremely limited quantities. As word of the new concept spread among comic book enthusiasts, demand increased and the series continued. Over the course of several months, the series had established a hardcore following of fans and by 1987 a licensing agreement was reached with Playmates Toys to release action figures and play sets along with a weekly animated television show based on the series. As a result of these efforts, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would go on to become one of the most successful licensing properties in comic book history. By 1990 the first live action major motion picture was released

and two sequels quickly followed. Both the original Playmates toy line and the weekly cartoon series would last until 1996. What started as a simple independent comic book series had become a pop culture phenomenon. Unfortunately, by 1997 the original toy line was quietly discontinued along with the original animated television series. Luckily, this absence would be short lived. A live action television series debuted in 1997 but only lasted about one year. It was at this time that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles disappeared from television once again, only to reborn and brought back to life in 2003 with a much darker approach that more closely resembled the original comic book. This brave new entry to the series would last until 2009. It was at this time that the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seemed to be destined to exist solely in comic book form. Luckily, sometime in 2012 fate would intervene. In a surprise move Nickelodeon

mark of the Wan Li period on the base, which ran from 1573 through 1619. The bowl itself is decorated in a very deep blue color, which is quite rare for its production time frame. Both the inside and outside are finely painted with happy children playing games in a garden. The motif is quite joyful and endearing. The quality of the illustration resembles fine calligraphy. This work was discovered through the company’s

Asian Arts and a regular on PBS’ “Antiques Roadshowâ€? since 1996, “This amazing bowl caught my eye from the moment it was presented to me for review. There are so many factors that really put it in a class by itself, including its size, cobalt blue decoration, important mark, and condition, among others. And, of course, its beautiful and timeless motif of children at play is universally appealing. This item is in the top five of any Mingera item I have ever handled‌ and that is saying a lot given my four decades in the business.â€? James D. Julia is headquartered in Fairfield, Maine. ownership, their stewardship of the home and respect for the island’s history was exemplary. The Nantucket Preservation Trust established the “John A. and Katherine S. Lodge Stewardship Award,” annually recognizing an individual, organization or owner of historic property demon-

strating a high degree of commitment to the preservation of historic structures and Nantucket. According to Mr. and Mrs. Lodge’s wishes, proceeds from the sale of the house and its contents will be donated to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, The Nantucket Conservation Foundation and

Turtles” line would be complete without referencing the original comic book that started it all. Those who were lucky enough to buy a copy of the first printing of the first issue of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” published by Mirage Studios may be sitting on a small fortune. Released in extremely limited quantities, a certified copy in near mint condition can easily sell for $4,000 or more! It should be noted that this price is for the first printing only, as subsequent printings are worth a lot less and do exist en masse. Collectors should be very cautious when buying ungraded copies of this book as forgeries exist as well. In conclusion, the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise is a true American success story.

Created by two rather unknown comic book artists at the time (Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird), the franchise shows just how a having a unique concept and a lot of luck can translate into mass market appeal. Today both the comic book series and the original toy line are being sought by collectors and enthusiasts alike, and since the franchise has been reintroduced to a whole new generation of fans, one can only assume that its appeal will continue long after my generation has passed on. Much like the infamous tag line that appeared during the commercial break during the original animated series, I am truly confident that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be back after these messages.” You can count on it!

Anecdotes And Antics (Continued from page 3)

Aside from these first 10 characters several rarities exist that were released towards the end of the original series. One of the most elusive characters to obtain is Scratch the Cat that can be seen selling on eBay for close to $800 to $1,000 when graded and encapsulated in near mint or better condition by AFA (Action Figure Authority). This hard-to-find figure was short packed, meaning that its production run was not as high as most other figures in the series.

Scratch the Cat is highly sought after and many collectors think that the figure is quite undervalued even at current market levels. Aside from the standard action figures offered by Playmates, several play sets graced store shelves as well. If you happen to have the Technodrome or Sewer Play Set in factory-sealed condition, you have a true rarity valued at over several thousand dollars each. As with most vintage toy lines, the more expensive vehicles and play sets were not hoarded en masse. No mention of the enduring popularity of the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja

LABOR DAY MON., SEPT. 1, 8 A.M. AT AMOS HERR PARK

For centuries, instruction in needlework was an important part of women’s education. Both plain sewing and fancy embroidery are skills that take considerable time and effort to acquire, and as a result, many women took great pride in their work. Women might use their skill to earn a living through teaching or sewing, to create objects of beauty for themselves and for others, or to embellish clothing and household furnishings. An upcoming exhibition, titled “The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament,” will showcase the evolution of needlework and the prominent role it played in women’s lives during the 17th through 19th centuries.

It opens with the diligence and skill required to learn and excel at needlework and delves into the various applications of the skill, with sections on diligence, profit, pleasure, and ornament. The exhibition features stunning visual examples. The show will run from Saturday, Aug. 23, to Sunday, July 5, 2015, in the East Gallery at Winterthur. Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is located at 5105 Kennett Pike in Winterthur, Del. A needlework conference will be held at Winterthur on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 25. spark creativity,” said Dee Dee. The NYC Big Flea Market will not only appeal to decorators, fashionistas, and collectors, but it will also appeal to the foodie crowd. The west side of Manhattan is known for its emphasis on quality food, as the Food Network and other key establishments are located in Chelsea and The Meat Packing District. Organizers have brought on board Nick Korbee, formerly of the Manhattan hot spot Smith & Mills, as head chef and creator of the food and beverage build out for the show. Korbee is considered to be one of the best new chefs in New York. “It is so important that we have excellent food for dealers and customers shopping the show. People deserve this. They can make a day of the show and will not have to go searching around Manhattan for lunch or an early dinner,” said Korbee. “We are creating a farm-totable sit down restaurant, as well as a number of chic bars and quick grab-and-go locations, to keep everyone satisfied and add to the excitement of the show itself.” If you are young and curious about decorating your space, interested in authentic fashion, a collector, or a foodie, this is the place to go. Show hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28. Pier 94 is located at the West Side Highway and 54th Street (711 12th Ave.) in New York City. Admission will be $10 for both days, free of charge to those under the age of 12. For further information, call 757-961-3988 or visit www.TheBigFleaMarket.com.

unique accent pieces from The Big Flea Market for less than what it would cost at Ikea. “Our young customers are tired of the mass-produced cookie cutter look that was so popular in the late 90s. And, they are finding that these pieces that were so affordable and necessary in decorating their first home or studio apartment just can’t take the wear and tear of daily living. Now, they are shopping shows for the kind of furniture that says ‘I have personal style’; furniture that not only makes a statement, but is so finely crafted that it has lasted and will last for years to come. Quality counts, as does the pure aesthetic beauty of antique furnishings from many different areas.” “Young people in their 20s and 30s certainly don’t have unlimited budgets. But, they will spring for a distinctive piece such as a sleek mid-century cocktail table to mix with their eclectic simplicity,” noted an organizer. The NYC Big Flea Market has all of the hot decorating trends from industrial, Shabby Chic, elegant and formal, and warm and rustic, to sleek Moderne. Decorators are finding that this new breed of flea market that D’Amore has pioneered is the perfect place to uncover such pieces at prices that are affordable. For the fashionistas of the city, the vintage clothing and accessories at this show are a must see. Everything from vintage Chanel, Dior, Hermes, and others to 18thcentury inspiration pieces will be there. “We have many well-known designers and visual display directors come to our shows for inspiration. There is a new audience for antiques out there, it’s young, it’s active, it’s fashionable and it’s buying! This new generation of buyers, however, is looking for value

for their dollar, in short a good deal, and they are responding to the “greenness of the past.” This new trend most definitely came from the young hipsters and tastemakers of cities like Paris, London, and yes, Manhattan. and a Gun Wa’s Chinese Remedy bottle, the smaller of the two sizes made, 8.25 inches tall, yellow amber in color and graded well at 9.7, went to a determined bidder for $1,792. A pair of J. H. Cutter Old Bourbon (A. P. Hotaling & Co., Portland, Ore., Sole Agents) Western flask pints were fought over by eager bidders. Both were the earliest of the five known variants. One was deep amber in color, circa 187377 and loaded with whittle, graded 9.6, sold for $2,464. The other was more desirable because of its rare greenish amber Here is a Cyrus Noble Pure Rye metal advertisement sign with original frame, 30-by-24inches, graded a 9 overall, which sold for $8,400.

but directly to the people of Great Britain, the document attempts to persuade the British to concede liberty to the colonies while at the same time having the colonies remain within the protective embrace of the British Empire. His tone is both pacific and aggressive. The letter begins with acknowledgement of “the tender ties which bind us to each other” and “the glorious achievements of our common ancestors,” and is followed by a list of complaints about the infringement of colonists’ rights and a description of oppression exercised against colonists in Boston: “That once populous, flourishing, commercial Town is now Garrisoned by an army sent not to protect, but to enslave its inhabitants.” The manuscript joins an unusually rich set of resources at New-York Historical for the study of the pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary period, including the papers of Robert R. Livingston himself. The New-York Historical Society will complement the display of the Livingston manuscript with

Early Snow White Production Cel From Disney’s First Feature-Length Animated Film Up For Auction A very early original preliminary production cel featuring Snow White from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is featured in an auction this month devoted entirely to animation art. The sale is being held by Massachusetts-based RR Auction. The Snow White cel was created circa 1935 and shows the character wearing a long pink dress with a blue bow in her hair. This rarity is on a full animation cel, complete with peg holes and a cel

number at the bottom right, not to be mistaken for a color model. The image measures 2.25-by-5-inches, with overall dimensions of 12.25-by9.75-inches. “Snow White and the Seven Dwards” was the first full-length cel animated feature film and the earliest in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. By the summer of 1936, friction had heightened between animators over the portrayal of Snow White as

more of a sophisticated young temptress, one that did not match the charming innocence that Disney required. “Walt Disney changed this design of the princess because he felt it was too ‘cartoony’ too risqué and reminiscent of Betty Boop - to be used for final production in a more serious film,” said Bobby Livingston, executive VP at RR Auction. “This considerable redesigning would result in the most perfect embodiment of the fairy-tale feminine ideal of purity and innocence that

More than 100 years of Hollywood rarities, from Brad Pitt’s leather coat from “Legends of the Fall” to a rare, alternate ending script from “Gone With The Wind,” spotlights Heritage Auctions’ Saturday, Aug. 23, Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction in Beverly Hills, Calif. The auction is a trove of behind-the-scenes treasures from the most beloved motion pictures ever made, including two pre-production concept paintings from “The Wizard of Oz,” one which depicts an early character concept for The Scarecrow and another which shows Dorothy on the Yellow Brick Road with two Munchkins. “We have many wonderful lots in this auction,” said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage. “This sale has costumes, documents, star autographs, and other Hollywood-related items that would be the cornerstone of any collection.” Collectors have a rare opportunity to own a piece of history from one of the 20th century’s best films, “Casablanca,” as a wicker chair from Rick’s Cafe Americain, in which Humphrey Bogart demands to hear “As Time Goes By,” crosses the block. In addition to the leather jacket worn by Pitt in his breakout role, a selection of important screen-worn costumes includes a jacket worn by Jack Nicholson in the 1974 Paramount neo-noir “Chinatown,” the role that garnered him an Academy Award nomination for leading actor. A 1989 oil painting signed (Continued on page 19)

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Morphy’s Coin-op & Advertising Auction Is Scheduled For Aug. 22 To 24 “This is our strongest sale so far this year,” remarked Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, summarizing the 2,165 lots in his company’s three-day Coin-op & Advertising Sale to be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 22, 23, and 24. “There’s such a tremendous selection of signs, soda fountain and other advertising, not to mention premier coin-op and gambling items, (that) we decided to make it a big three-day event. The quality across the board is tremendous, and we know collectors are going to be more than pleased.” The Aug. 22 session will open with more than 100 tobacciana lots. The big winner in the category could very well be Lot 40, a handsome charger advertising Alcazar Cigars and depicting “America’s Winningest Horse.” Measuring 17 inches
