Zoar Harvest Festival And Antiques Show Has Record Attendance Historic Village Celebrates 250th Anniversary
The Zoar Community Association’s dedicated volunteers maintain large community gardens in the village.
By Karl Pass The 44th annual Harvest Festival in the historic village of Zoar, in east-central Ohio, was held the weekend of July 29 and 30. Traditionally, the event is held the first weekend of August, but the Zoar Community Association moved the festival up one week in order to avoid falling on the same weekend as the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions in nearby Canton. The date change proved to be a wise one. The Hall of Fame stadium and facilities are 18 miles north of Zoar, and the annual induction ceremony grows bigger every year, drawing huge crowds that inflate hotel prices throughout the region. Many dealers stated they were able to get a less expensive rate this year as a result. This year marks the 250th anniverary of Zoar, founded in 1817

Frank Swala of Jefferson, Pa., asked $3,900 for the small size paint-decorated Somerset County, Pa., lift-top chest. It sold. The J. Reser, Cincinnati, Ohio, copper tea kettle was $850, and the paint-decorated dome-top box was $1,900. Swala had a good show. Among his sales was a pie safe and a Morgantown, W. Va., “people crock.”
An antique mail sleigh, included in the Pennsylvania State Museum’s “Common Canvas” exhibit in 2009 and deaccessioned by the PHMC, will be sold at the Hospice and Community Care Labor Day Auction. Held at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, Pa., the benefit auction will be a two-day event on Saturday, Sept. 2, and also Monday, Sept. 4. The sleigh was donated to this year’s sale and will come up for bid on Monday, Sept. 4. The mail sleigh, dating in the 1850s, was used to transport mail in New England and has been restored with yellow paint, working doors and door handles. It was was donated by a generous community member. They snap photographs at a staggering rate, and with nearly unlimited capacity on their memory cards, they have an insatiable appetite for pictures. So thinking about it, I wonder if the ease of taking photographs and making copies of

Now, perhaps he did not like the family name, but it’s hard to believe he could sell his patrimony so easily. I can sometimes understand why someone would sell possessions like a clock or a desk if they physically did not fit into a home or particular décor. A portrait, however, can live in a closet if someone really does not want to look at it. So, in thinking about this, I

consignment shops. Let me begin by saying that I am puzzled at a fundamental level why you would dispose of a family portrait. Not only is this part of your ancestry, but you are also the custodian of a long and proud legacy. It is that sense of responsibility for your family that would prompt one to not sell the portrait, but rather to put it in a closet. We talked at the lunch about what would make someone get rid of family portraits. He noted that he met a gentleman whose name was

that perhaps a family loses track of the identity in a painting, especially when a direct line dies out, I have seen sales where direct descendants allow the family to be sold, and I have wondered, why? The other week at lunch, I was talking to a professional colleague, who noted that he had been seeing a huge jump in the number of family portraits being offered as donations to museums. I, too, had noticed a large number of portraits coming onto the market of late, both at auction and in
images has cheapened it all. This sounds perhaps a bit harsh, and I take the criticism for it, but would also be curious as to whether there is a correlation between the selling of family images and the ease and cheapness in taking photographs. Whatever the answer, I really encourage people with family portraits to hold and honor them. Too many portraits end up out in the marketplace where the family name is lost and it becomes a portrait of an unknown man or woman by an unknown artist. Value is minimal, but to the family, they are priceless.

Bartmann jugs, sometimes c a l l e d Bellarmine jugs, are European stoneware pieces that were produced during the 16th and 17th centuries (and even later). They are so called because of their typical decorative detail – an applied molded bearded face lower on the neck of the jug, right above the shoulders. Bartmann decoration was used on jugs, pitchers, and bottles or flasks of all sizes. “Bartmann” means, quite literally, “bearded man” in German, and it was in Germany, particularly in the western area, in the Rhineland region around Cologne, that Bartmann pieces were manufactured. Molded decoration was the norm, but the bearded figure (also sometimes referred to as
the bearded mask or Bartmaske) was most commonly associated with Cologne. A bearded figure appears throughout Germanic folklore as a sort of wild man of the forest and is thought to be the inspiration for the stoneware Bartmann. Throughout the years of manufacture, the decoration styles would change – early ones often just have the molded face decoration, later they were sometimes decorated with medallions, sometimes with a coat of arms, sometimes the body of the vessel itself was decorated, sometimes it bore religious sentiments, but the face is a constant. These pieces are also sometimes referred to as Bellarmine (bell-AR-meen), which is believed to be a reference to Robert Bellarmine (1542 to 1621), a cardinal who vigorously opposed

There is also some speculation that they were used to hold charms, with the faces (which grew increasingly fantastical and grotesque during the decades of production) warding off evil spirits and that they helped spread the association and tradition that would lead to the more dramatic face jugs like those produced in America centuries later. Doing so prevented railroads from refusing to haul mail, The “eagle style” RMS badge design was approved in 1899. and mail transportation by train paralleled the rail network growth throughout the mid- to late-1800s. Although there are conflicting claims of the first successful enroute distribution in the United States that marked the beginning of this new era of mail transportation, it is a fact that the Railway Mail Service (RMS) was established in 1864 as a section of the Post Office Department. Railway Postal Clerks (RPC) sorted mail in specially-equipped Railway Post Office (RPO) cars. Prior to 1879, RPCs were
1879 Postal Laws and Regulations (PL&R), Section 711, “Uniform for Railway Mail Employees” makes an indirect reference: “The Postmaster-General is satisfied that the adoption of a uniform for the railway mail service has been productive of great good to the service by elevating its tone and inspiring a feeling of manly pride in the
corps, which has greatly increased its efficiency. While the law [Act of March 3, 1879, section 1, 20 Stat., p. 357] forbids him to require any uniform to be worn other than a cap or badge, and no distinction can be made between those who wear the entire uniform and those who do not, he believes that the interests of the service will be promoted and the safety of the mails increased if all the employees, of their own free will and accord, continue to wear the entire uniform formerly required-a uniform which any man should be proud to wear in view of the honorable record which the railway mail service of the United States has made since its organization.” This note does not appear in the next revision of the PL&R, issued in 1887. Domed coat- and vest-size, gold-finish buttons with “POD” in the center and “Railway Mail Service” around the border exist, but no complete pre-1879 uniform is known. Following 1879, PL&R Section 711 only requires the
RPC to wear a cap bearing the letters “RMS” in silver, surrounded by a gold wreath. This design may have been adopted prior to 1879, as a part of the full uniform mentioned above. The cap was “regulation navy” which was dark navy blue in

The 1898-99 Annual Report of the Postmaster General states that the new badges were in use throughout the service by June 1899. The Daily Bulletin Number 5916, July 24, 1899, describes the “eagle badge” design. These badges have a central oval with “POST
OFFICE DEPARTMENT” along the top border, “RAILWAY MAIL SERVICE” along the bottom border, and an interlocking “U S” in the center among a field of 13 stars. Above the oval is an eagle, and olive branches with a serial number appear below the oval. These badges are made of un-plated nickel silver, nickel-plated brass, or nickel-plated steel. No known examples exist of the “RMS”-inwreath on either cap style. RPCs complained that it was difficult to keep the cap clean while working long hours in un-air conditioned cars close behind steam locomotives during summer months. In the winter, RPCs reported that the cap was equally unsuitable because it failed to keep their heads warm in the drafty, poorly heated RPOs. A meeting of RMS division superintendents was held in November 1897. A recommendation was made at this meeting to abandon the cap and only require a RPC to wear a badge while on duty. This recommendation was approved by the general superintendent of the RMS and the second assistant postmaster general. A

Fake And Fantasy Slave Tags Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos Historical pieces from a dark aspect of American history, authentic slave artifacts, are equally sought after by museums and collectors. Tangible reminders of a long era of human servitude in this country as well as a testament to the strength of the human spirit, slaves were considered to be a “work force” - with any outside wages going directly to their owners - engaging in labor of all types, from heavy field work to duties inside a household. As slavery-related items can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, the fakes, fantasies and reproductions proliferate in the collecting world.
Among the most faked type of artifact is slave tags. The skill level and ability of slaves to do their work well played a large part in determining their value, and slaveholders in some areas capitalized on those abilities. Early in the 18th century, the local authorities in some cities controlled contracts for slavery, whereby slaves could be hired out, under written contract, by themselves or their owner to others needing the slaves’ skilled labor. However, in Charleston, S.C., and Charleston Neck, no such documentation was required; instead, slave tags were required to be worn by all slaves hired to anyone outside of their holder’s plantation. Tags weren’t worn by
slaves who only worked on a specific plantation and were never hired out. The earliest tags were made circa 1790, but these were Free Slave tags, and only a few are known to exist. Authentic slave tags are typically dug or handed down in families and were made between 1800 and 1865. Anything dated before or after those years is a fantasy piece. The history of slaves for hire is important in the quest to identify authentic slave tags because it instantly tells the buyer or bidder that any supposedly real slave tag marked with any location other than Charleston or Charleston Neck is a fantasy piece. According to Rich Hartzog, longtime collector of slave tags and other exonumia, as well as a dealer and recognized expert, a fantasy slave tag is one that would never have existed; it may have markings indicating it is from outside of Charleston or Charleston Neck or may contain wording related to slavery. On the other hand, a fake is a piece that would be crafted to closely resemble authentic tags with similar die-struck markings and artificial aging. Not all sellers have or take the time to research whether their items are real, so it’s truly up to buyers to do their own research before buying; whether through an auction, flea market or antiques shop, the rule is “buyer beware.” Plenty of fake slave tags have been sold or auctioned off at prices that clearly show that the buyers believed them to be authentic. One such wellknown piece was represented as a rare early American slave tag - it was oval with markings on both sides, engraved with the name of a plantation and its crops, the slave’s first name and occupation, “Mississippi,” and an engraving of shackles and chains on one side. This fantasy piece sold for $1,100, when in fact it

backs. The 1898-99 Annual Report of the Postmaster General states that 8,388 RPCs were employed in 15 divisions. A ledger at the National Archives records the initial assignment of the “Eagle” style badge issued to divisions in 1899. The First Division received badge numbers 1 through 700. These initial 9,000 badges were made by American Railway Supply, based upon small hallmark plates soldered to the rear of the badges in this series. No information is available about the orders for badge numbers 9001 through 14815. However, C. G. Braxmar Co. in New York was contracted to make eagle badges 14816-17541. It is unknown how these serial numbers were allocated to the existing divisions, all of which experienced growth of RPCs. During the first decade of the 20th century, the Post Office Department sought cost reduction in operations, supplies, and wages. This seems to explain a decision to purchase a plain, oval-style badge in 1908. A sample was submitted by American Railway Supply Co., N.Y., numbered 17542. One thousand oval badges were ordered, numbered 18542 to 19541, on Dec. 21, 1908. This style is inscribed “POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT” along the top border of the oval and “RAILWAY MAIL SERVICE” along the bottom border. “U.S. MAIL” in large letters and a serial number occupy the center of oval. These badges are made of un-plated nickel silver with a pin back. Many examples are without hallmarks on the back, while others are marked for

American Railway Supply. There was apparently a second order soon thereafter, since known examples of oval badges range from 17—- to 24—-. Number 24654 may have been the highest number in the oval series. Corresponding to the growth in routes and RPCs, four new RMS Divisions were added just before World War I. It is not known what serial number range was assigned to the Twelfth Division, but the newlyformed Thirteenth Division received badge number 24619 and above. No information is available about badge assignments in the Fourteenth or Fifteenth divisions. However, a hypothesis is that clerks in the former divisions from which these were formed kept their badges, and consequently the divisions formed after 1912 had a mixture of legacy badges plus some unknown quantities of new badges to cover RPC growth plus attrition of badges due to loss or damage. The Second Division was noted to have stopped using oval badges in 1918. However, oval-style badges were not necessarily withdrawn from service when badge designs changed back to the eagle-style around 1918. “Oval style” RMS badges were issued to temporary (usually Christmas season) Terminal employees as recently as the 1950s in North Carolina and perhaps elsewhere. New eagle-style badge orders following World War I were placed with C. G. Braxmar, or N. C. Walter & Sons, both of New York City. The serial numbers on new badges continued to run sequentially for badges made through 1949. The highest RMS serial number produced is not known, but 65—- has been Continued on page 15

The “eagle style” PTS badge was made after 1949. identification badges began to displace metal badges within the Post Office Department. clerks likewise used these badges as official U.S.P.O.D. identification. These clerks were at: 1) Transfer offices located at major rail junctions, to supervise the transfer of mail between RPOs and the loading/unloading of storage mail cars on trains. 2) Street car Railway Post Offices under RMS jurisdiction, to sort mail within these miniature RPOs on the streets of several major cities. 3) Terminals created after 1913, to handle the distribution of parcel post as well as unworked mail received at the end points of RPO routes. 4) Air Mail Field distribution facilities established after 1928, to handle the receipt, in-transit sorting, and dispatch to air mail flights. 5) Highway Post Offices established after 1941, to perform en route distribution on highways. The only known instance that badges were withdrawn when a new design appeared was after the PTS went out of existence and postal employees were issued plastic photo identification cards with clips that were worn as badges. However, clerks often retained the metal badges and wore them with pride. Many clerks on the final run on the New York & Washington RPO in 1977 sported these “eagle style” badges as an appropriate close to both an era and a tradition.
