Chessboard Made From Wood From The Titanic Sells For $16,385 At Philip Weiss Auctions’ Sale A

chessboard made from actual wood retrieved from the wreckage of the legendary ocean liner RMS Titanic sold for $16,385 at an auction held July 23 by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. The chessboard was the top earner in an auction that saw around 700 lots change hands and grossed $200,000. The chessboard was crafted by William Parker, a carpenter aboard the Minia, one of the ships that was sent out to recover bodies from the doomed Titanic, which went down after striking an iceberg in April 1912.

A first-edition copy of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea,” signed and inscribed by the author, sold for $3,220.

Parker retrieved wooden debris, as well as victims, and he used the wood to fashion several pieces, including the 18-by-18-inch mahogany, oak and pine chessboard. For years, the chessboard was displayed at the Manitoba Museum of the Titanic in Canada. It came with a provenance report dated 2001 and prepared by Steven Smith, historian curator of Titanic Concepts Inc. Along with ocean liner memorabilia, the auction also featured historical items, militaria, vintage posters, rare books, and rock ‘n’ roll and aviation collectibles, among other categories. About 60 people attended the auction live, while 700 or so others registered to bid online via Proxibid.com and Invaluable.com. Many phone and absentee bids were also recorded. The following are additional highlights. All prices include a 13 percent buyer’s premium. The second top lot was a block of 15 unused tickets to the Beatles’ last concert performance in the United States at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Calif., in 1966. The consignor was someone who dated a relative of Tom Donahue, the show’s producer. He gave the tickets away, as the show did not sell out. Donhaue’s business card was also included in the lot, which sold for $12,000. A portfolio by Walter Schnackenberg titled “Ballett und Pantomime,” designed by Schnackenberg, published by Georg Muller Verlag and printed in Munich, Germany, with 15 of the volume’s 22 plates depicting ballet figures and costumes, one of 850, brought $3,450. A Civil War grouping pertaining to Company E, 15th Regiment, the New Jersey Volunteers, sold for $2,825. The archive, originally gathered by Union Capt. John H. Vandeveer, included an 8-by-9-inch photo of the unit in the field at rest, with each member identified below the image, and Vandeveer’s Tiffany sword and scabbard. Vandeveer died from battle wounds in September 1864. An original British World War I poster titled “God Save the King,” produced in 1915 by England’s Publicity Department, measuring 19.25-by-29.25-inches, changed

An archive of material pertaining to the English children’s book illustrator and writer Kate Greenaway (born Catherine Greenaway, 1846-1901), collected between 1883 and 1887 and including almanacs, calendars and a handwritten note, all housed in a custom binder, rose to $1,920. Her first book “Under the Window” (1879), a volume of children’s verses, was a bestseller. U.S. Antique Shows Announces Incredible Success At July’s New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show The Company Reports Highest Attendance In Recorded History U.S. Antique Shows reported a three percent increase in overall attendance for the New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show. The four-day event, which was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion on July 25 to 28, also achieved the highest attendance in recorded history on both July 27 and July 28. “We’re thrilled that the New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show was a huge success! The show floor was filled with serious buyers and many of the clientele were new, first time attendees to the show,” said Dan Darby, Emerald Expositions vice president and U.S. Antique Shows general manager. “Our dealers have shared with us that many of their best pieces sold at excellent prices.” For a seventh year, the

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics Is Auction Etiquette A Dying Art Form? Having missed most of the preview period I was on my own when it came to judging what to buy. Most of my attention was focused on the extreme lack of etiquette demonstrated by bidders my own age. I find this issue becoming a major problem at less organized auctions that occur outside of well-known auction galleries. During the auction one such bidder decided the best way to attract the auctioneerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention was to scream in a rather obnoxious manner the word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yo!,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; which seemed eerily similar to the now infamous â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yuuupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; shouted by Dave Hester of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Storage Warsâ&#x20AC;? fame. Another bidder assumed that screaming while banging his chair was an excellent way to not only bid but also attempt to intimidate other bidders. Sorry to say both strategies only work if your competition is solely

focused on whom is bidding rather than the auction at hand. Since I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know any of these individuals, I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care what tactics were employed. My own strategy at most auctions is to calmly sit towards the front on an end row and proceed to look straight ahead or down at my ever present Internet-abled iPad. Not only does this allow me to focus solely on the auction and the items in question, but it also serves as a necessary and much needed distraction so I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even bother to notice who I am bidding against. This is extremely helpful at higher end auctions, which I attend on a regular basis and where I encounter the same group of bidders time and time again. Much to my own dismay, this particular auction had several other bidders who employed worse tactics than

Several months ago I attended an estate auction at the home of an individual who unfortunately passed on well before his time. Due to my hectic schedule it had been several years since I had attended a sale of this manner. While the most recent auction I had attended of this sort focused around a collector who had amassed a valuable collection of classic home video games and systems, this particular auction was more eclectic and had everything from antique furniture, vintage advertising, and various toys and games produced up until the new millennium. It was evident that this individual was a collector, as most of the toys and games

were factory-sealed, with the bulk of the collection produced in the 1970s and 1980s. These were the toys of my youth and the sole reason I was attending. Much to my surprise and even with little fanfare, the auction garnered a fairly warm response with about 40 to 50 bidders in attendance. Like a lot of smaller estate auctions, there was no Internet bidding. Either you were present or you did not bid. These kinds of auctions can often yield items selling for a fraction of their full worth, and as a result, I would venture to say that close to half of the bidders in attendance were buying for the purpose of reselling. Unfortunately, as the auction progressed I was not focused on when my chosen lots would come up for bid or who my competition was and what they would be perusing.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics the fine art of auction bidding on their own. Society and our own culture sometimes has a tendency to mislead the uninitiated about how auctions truly work, as everyone remembers at least one sitcom sketch that shows an uninitiated bidder who accidently bids on a priceless piece of art just by mistakenly scratching their nose at the wrong time. It is sad to say that some of those outside the world of live auctions truly think that what the media and entertainment industries portray somehow equates to reality at such events. What else can explain the fact that a multitude of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Storage Warsâ&#x20AC;? viewers who also attend auctions on a regular basis now employ Hesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infamous â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yuuupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; when bidding? Not surprisingly I am encountering this annoying bidding tactic more and more. Life, it seems, has started to mimic art in more ways than one. In conclusion auction etiquette appears to be a dying art form. The glut of reality television shows that now focus on antiques and collectibles is overwhelming. Unfortunately, a lot of these shows are anything but reality and not only show the antiques and collectibles trade in bad form, but also show that basic respect is a dying art form as well. In an upcoming article I plan to explore the impact that reality television has had on the antiques and collectibles trade. Until that time I thank you for reading!

just screaming or beating on a chair. In a vain attempt to override a competing bid one bidder attempted to shout the word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;No!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; when anyone else tried to bid against him. This tactic eventually caught the attention of the auctioneer who nearly came to a full stop several times throughout the auction to confirm if the original bidder was in fact bidding under all the shouting. Needless to say the auctioneer did not seem too happy, but failed to note his discontent out loud. Above all the distractions and failed tactics used by this group of bidders none were worse than the individual who pointed in the direction of his competition in an angry manner after they bid against him. Unfortunately, this same bidder was interested in several lots that I was after so this meant both me and one other competing bidder were consistently being pointed and screamed at. Out of the 16 lots I bid on, I won at least 12 against this particular bidder. All of these items sold for well below their perceived value should they have been sold online or consigned to a high-end auction house. Perhaps it was a lack of monetary funds that caused this bidder to resort to intimidation in order to attempt to win his chosen lots? That is a question that only the bidder himself can answer. Sadly, bidding at an auction is a skill that is not normally taught in school or common social groups. As a result bidders have to learn

Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions in Vineland, N.J., recently announced that her company has been chosen to auction the antique toy and bank collection of distinguished Washington, D.C., attorney and longtime collector/scholar Max Berry. The first in a series of two, possibly three, auctions devoted to the Berry collection will be held at Bertoia’s gallery on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15. Over 500 antique banks, cast-iron horse-drawn toys, early American tin and cast-iron bell toys will cross the auction block. “We are thrilled that Max chose us to auction his toys. It’s such an honor for us,” said Bertoia. “Our family has been friends with Max for many years, going back to the great friendship he had with my husband, Bill (the late William S. Bertoia, cofounder of Bertoia Auctions).” The Max Berry collection is regarded as one of the most important antique toy and bank collections in existence. “Few collections are on par with Max’s,” Bertoia said. “In terms of rarity and historical significance, it ranks among the very best collections of the past 30 to 40 years.” Although the lineup of toys for November’s debut sessions is still being finalized, Bertoia singled out two exciting early American rarities that definitely will be

National Milk Glass Collectors To Hold 27th Annual Convention On Sept. 25 To 27 The National Milk Glass Collectors Society (NMGCS) will hold their 27th annual convention on Thursday, Sept. 25, to Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich. The society was founded in 1987 for the purpose of promoting knowledge, interest, enjoyment and collecting of opaque glass commonly known as milk glass. Today the society has several hundred members throughout the United States and various foreign countries. The convention will start on Thursday with early registration and pickup of this year’s commemorative piece, a green and white slag turtle on a 5-inch base. The mold for this piece is among many original molds owned by the society. An original commemorative piece has been produced by the society every year since 1988. Several pieces from past years are still available for purchase. The hospitality room will also be open every evening and at other times during the convention. Eventgoers should also plan to visit the Henry Ford museum, which is only a few blocks away from the hotel. On Friday, the convention will open in earnest with registrations. A short

business meeting will be conducted with a welcome for new members. An interesting presentation and “show and tell” session with several pieces of unknown origin will round out the morning. The afternoon will be devoted to the annual auction of over 300 pieces of milk glass and related items conducted by Col. Ed Khulman, who has been the NMGCS auctioneer since the first convention in 1988. Saturday morning will open with the dealers room featuring several wellknown, experienced and knowledgeable professional dealers in milk glass. A presentation about the history and products of the Challinor, Taylor and Co. will be offered by Brad Gougeon, a collector and historian of the manufacturers of milk glass. The convention will close on Saturday evening with a banquet and entertainment for members and guests. The sitters are identified on the reverse as David Weld (1734-1821) and Sarah Weld (1737-1817), married in 1756. Research located Weld as a lifelong Roxbury, Suffolk County, resident and revealed Sarah’s maiden name as Davis. The estimate is $3,000-$6,000. The real firepower in the genre is lent by the section of the Von Norden collection dedicated to machine guns. It is clearly the finest and most significant offering of World War II German machine guns ever before offered. This is made especially apparent when viewing Lot 1465, an outstanding FG42 paratrooper rifle with the much coveted ZF4 sniper scope and original mount. Another fine example resides in Lot 1470, the Haenel manufactured Mkb.42(H) assault rifle with the even rarer original sheet metal sniper scope mount and ZF41/1 sniper scope. It is the only known MKb.42(H) in private hands! Though the StG-44 with its captivating and scant encountered experimental Krummlauf curved barrel and optical sighting device in Lot 1469 will also attract many a curious enthusiast. The selection of luxury sporting arms reads like a phone book of “Who’s who” of the genre including Holland & Holland, John Dickson, Purdey, Wesley Richards, Perazzi, Churchill, Krieghoff, Boss, A.H. Fox, Merkel, and other prestigious manufacturers. These cased wonders of strong wood, engraved steel, inlaid precious metals, and the highest craftsmanship would be just as at home in a fine watch store as in the assemblage of this auction. RIAC has been steadily increasing its role as

a purveyor of fine arms and never has it been more apparent than this auction. Arguably, the most remarkable of these pieces, in Lot 1399, is an A.H. Fox master engraved and gold inlaid shotgun dual signed by two of the century’s most talented master engravers, Rudolph Kornbrath and William Gough, who were working for Colt at the time. The engraving on this shotgun and its extra barrel are breathtaking. Where else could one see a 4.75-inch-long panel scene of a Native American huntress, gold inlaid bands, a casehardened frame, staggering floral and vine engraving, numerous gold inlaid animals and floral accents, and still not view half of the ornamentations on the gun? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the finest gold inlaid American shotguns signed by two renowned master engravers. With all the finery and opulence of the A.H. Fox, perhaps the most extravagant of the sporting arms is the magnificent cased pair of Westley Richards droplock hammerless shotguns, chambered in .410 bore in lot 3335. This lavish set is smothered in a full coverage of platinum, gold, and silver inlays depicting flitting hummingbirds, delicate lilies, and floating feathers. The use of precious metals as the primary medium of decoration on this gun doesn’t cease on the receiver. The gold is also used for the serial number and to wash many parts of the frame such as surfaces of the locking blocks, both triggers, internal components of the drop locks, and even the four snap caps.
