Bertoia’s Fall Festival Auction Slated For Sept. 19 And 20 Sale Will Include European And American Toys, Trains, Comic Characters And Premium-Quality Christmas Antiques
F
ew individuals like for summer to end, but there’s a silver lining for toy collectors when the sunny season turns a corner and heads into fall. It means that soon it will be time for Bertoia’s Annual Fall Festival Auction. This year the popular, widely diverse sale of antique and vintage toys, trains and holiday items will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, at B e r t o i a ’s spacious auction gallery in Vineland, N.J. Nearly 1,400 lots are being prepared for the colorful event, with an An Alps Twirly Whirly rocket ride, Japanese, is estimated at $500-$600.
exciting list of categories that includes cast-iron and tin, penny toys, lead boats, European trains and stations, paper-overwood and Fisher-Price toys. Almost 300 lots are dedicated to holiday collectibles, primarily for Christmas, with another 80 uncataloged box lots reserved as an This German belsnickle candy container, composition figure in fur robe, standing 12 inches tall, is estimated at $500-$600.
auction epilogue solely for bidders who are in attendance. “This is an entertaining A-to-Z toy sale that won’t disappoint,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “There’s a lot to see and bid on over the two-day period. We’ll be starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.” Friday’s session begins with a featured collection of 19th-century miniature lead boats by Issmayer, Heyde
and others. “I’ve never seen this many in one group, because they’re very hard to find. The consignor is an American who bought primarily in Europe. Many are of the same type seen in some of David Pressland’s books,” said Bertoia. There will also be many larger boats docked at Bertoia’s, including an elusive 23-inch Uebelacker riverboat and a very special craft by Rock & Graner, an example of which is also depicted in a Pressland reference. “When I asked David about it, he confirmed that it’s a tremendous find. If David says that, I’ll certainly take his word for it,” Bertoia said. American cast-iron vehicles include autos, trucks, ‘cycles, farm vehicles and fire engines. Featured highlights are an Arcade panel van, a Kilgore Stutzstyled auto and a very rare Hubley three-ton stake truck. Coveted Marklin productions lead the train section. Among the highlights from Germany’s premier toy brand will be a lithographed-tin Heinz Tomato Ketchup car, several one-gauge Pennsylvania Railroad passenger sets, and very nice one-gauge “windcutter.” Four Marklin stations are entered in the sale as well, including an especially nice Central Station. In addition, a globe-on-arc lamp and a few choice canopy accessories are included. For collectors of German toys who’d like to visit a very exclusive day spa, Bertoia’s invites them to dip a toe into a Marklin swimming pool similar to those seen at Europe’s luxury hotels of a century ago. completely railed, with simulated brickwork, and has a diving board and platform. While it is estimated at $6,000$8,000, Bertoia believes it could well exceed that price range. This circa-1900 Rock & Graner battleship, German, handpainted and 19 inches long, is estimated at $35,000-$45,000.
Highlights in the automotive section include a connoisseur’s piece, a very early (circa 1900-02) Carette steam-driven open car with a curious, primitive design, plus several

Carette taxis and limos. Also in the lineup are two Alfa Romeo P2 racers, one in red and the other in an even scarcer blue color, as well as a couple of Bluebird racers, including a very desirable lithographedtin 13-inch version with driver by SY Japan. Many other European toys will be up for bid, among them an outstanding boxed Ski Rolf by Lehmann, estimated at $8,000$10,000. “It’s all original and is the nicest one we’ve ever seen. It’s like new/old store stock,” Bertoia said. Also in the mix are more than 50 penny toys,

including some colorful autos, an early airplane and a few articulated types. A comprehensive array of comic character toys, many of them boxed and of Japanese manufacture runs the gamut of radio, TV and newspaper comic strip characters. Ten Popeye variations, numerous character bands, an army of Marx toys, and many Mickey Mouse and other Disney toys (including celluloid) will be ready to perform and amuse. Saturday’s session will start with more than 100 pressed-steel vehicles. The centerpiece is a fine fleet of trucks and pedal cars, and although they are from a prestigious collection, all will be sold without reserve. All of the top brands are represented, including Buddy L, Keystone and Sturditoy. A few are old store stock and retain their original boxes. The pedal car selection includes both early, all-original examples and other vehicles that have been restored to perfection. “All levels of buyer will be satisfied,” Rich Bertoia assured. Next up will be die-cast toys, mostly by Smith-Miller. Some genuine rarities have been spotted in the grouping, including a red-painted wood prototype truck made right after World War II. It is an extremely well designed item with a futuristic look. Even though an artist’s rendering of the finished toy appeared in S m i t h Miller’s sales catalog, the toy never actually saw production, making the companydocumented prototype even more desirable to collectors. The last of the wonderful paper-on-wood toys consigned to Bertoia’s by the late Dr. Frank Loveland will be auctioned on day two of the sale. This section is replete with wood trains and Noah’s Ark lots from the Loveland collection and others. Of special note is an ark from Dr.
Loveland’s collection that is a “transitional” toy. Intact, it is an ark, but when the top is removed, it takes on the form of a train. Two toys The Chein Popeye overhead puncher, circa 1930s, lithographed tin with celluloid punching bag, is estimated at $800$1,000.
for the price of one. Other toy highlights include a collection of Erzgebirge toys, both of hand-painted wood and paper on wood; a General Grant clockwork “smoker” toy; and approximately 50 Fisher-Price toys, including some of the company’s earliest designs. One look at the outstanding collection of early Atlantic City tourist souvenirs and there’s no question as to where the hit HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” drew its inspiration. In addition to picture postcards and photos, the collection includes ceramic dishes, etched ruby glass, cups, saltwater taffy boxes, and even a spittoon (Continued on page 2)

In late 1980 Mattel was looking to possibly purchase the rights to produce a toy line based on “Conan the Barbarian, but fate would intervene. In a bold move Mattel decided it would be best to produce a toy line from the ground up rather than use an existing concept. This was quite risky as most of the successful action figures at the time were all

Mattel was looking for a property where they would control all exclusive rights, much like their own popular Barbie and Hot Wheels franchises. The very first entry of the “Masters of the Universe toy line appeared in 1981 when the line was launched in a unique 5.5 inch scale, much larger than the 3.75 inch Star Wars figures. In 1981 “Star Wars was already well on its way to establishing itself as one of the most popular film franchises in history. The 1983 theatrical release of “The Return of the Jedi would solidify this fact. With merchandising and licensing agreements already in place, the Star Wars franchise would become one of the most lucrative licensing properties ever. Kenner Toys
established itself as one of the most popular toy companies after securing the full rights to produce and distribute toys and action figures based on the series. This left competitors looking for other options in which to compete with the juggernaut that Kenner Toys had become. One such company was Mattel, who had mass market success with the Hot Wheels and Barbie toy lines that monopolized much of the market for both boys and girls. Mattel was looking for a new property that would not only expand its sales, but

the “Masters of the Universe Eternia play set. While both are worth several hundred dollars complete in their original boxes, if you happen to have them factory-sealed you have something worth several thousands of dollars, and their prices have been soaring on the secondary marketplace due to the sets being prominently featured on realitybased television shows like “Toy Hunter. However, the most valuable and hardest to find pieces on the market today involve any of the international releases that were not available in the United States.

By 1983 having a successful toy line also meant having a successful cartoon series and the “Masters of the Universe series was no exception. It featured one of the most popular weekly cartoon series ever created. The series would last until 1985, but the popularity of the toy line would continue and by 1987 a full live action movie was released. Unfortunately, by this time interest in the series had waned in the United States. Ironically, the series gained a large core following overseas and when Mattel ceased production of the line in the United States, retail sales in Europe continued. This has caused a lot of frustration for toy collectors, as a lot of the exclusive action figures that were only released in the European market are very hard to find. As more figures were ultimately released, the packaging changed to showcase the new figures currently available. However, even late release figures kept new and sealed carry a lot of value, as the “Masters of the Universe toy line was not hoarded in masse when compared to popular toy lines like Star Wars. Aside from the factorysealed action figures, the two most popular play sets released were the original Castle Grayskull play set and

that not only attracted toy enthusiasts, but also the original copyright holders of the “Conan the Barbarian series, who attempted to sue Mattel for copyright infringement. Mattel would prove not only victorious in the lawsuit, but also victorious at capturing the hearts and minds of a new generation of toy buyers. With the Star Wars property dying due to a lack of demand, the new “Masters of the Universe theme was launched at the right time. While Kenner Toys (now a part of Hasbro) quietly discontinued the original Star Wars toy line to focus on a new G.I. Joe toy line, Mattel had managed to capture the majority of Star Wars enthusiasts thirsty for something new. Sales soared and Mattel quickly released new characters and play sets to go along with the new series.

Both the Laser Light HeMan and the Laser Light Skeletor action figures in factory-sealed condition will bring several thousands of dollars each. Even if loose and complete, these two figures are highly sought after. Towards the tail end of the line, Mattel also released two 12-inch figures packaged inside an oversized box. These were also released for the international market only,
and there were two figures done in this fashion: Tytus and Megator. Both pieces are in a lot of demand and highly sought after. These are extremely hard to find and can command upwards of $3,000 to $5,000 each on the secondary market in factorysealed condition. The “Masters of the Universe toy line was one of the most popular toy series released in the 1980s. Unfortunately, Mattel has

Bracelets, brooches, and other forms are grouped together and in chronological order. Advanced collectors and appraisers will find this a complete and quick-reference tool, while novices will enjoy learning this fascinating field through the many illustrated identification tips. struggled to keep the brand relevant, and the series hasn’t aged as well as G.I. Joe, The Transformers, or Star Wars. The series was recently rereleased as part of a directto-consumer marketing campaign that catered to adult consumers. Mattel also has released several action figures exclusively to Toys-RUs stores in various packaging assortments. This limited distribution has meant that the series has been kept out
of the mainstream and future generations have not been exposed to the line when compared to other popular toy series from the same era. Will this affect the future collectability of the series? Only time will tell but if you ask anyone who grew up in the 1980s, the “Masters of the Universe still ranks as one of the most popular series of that era!

from the museum’s own permanent collection, and a number will be on display for the first time. These posters help to tell the story of the massive human efforts put forth during these 20th-century global conflicts. Originally displayed in public locations such as post offices, train stations, city halls, schools, and businesses, these war posters and, perhaps more importantly, the messages they communicated, were found everywhere throughout the United States. The impressive selection of posters explores themes of recruitment of men into the armed services; funding of the wars through bonds and other methods; efforts on the home front, such as conservation and work ethic, which contributed to victory; campaigns by service organizations such as the Salvation Army, YMCA and Boy Scouts; and the role of women in the war effort. Many of the posters are American, but examples from Canada, France, Great Britain and other ally nations will also be featured. Artists such as J. C. Leyendecker, James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy, Edward Penfield, Francis Luis Mora, Jessie Wilcox Smith, and Norman Rockwell, among others, are included in this exhibition. The Reading Public Museum is supported in part by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is located at 500 Museum Road in Reading, Pa. Admission per day is $10 for adults (age 18-64) and $6 for children/seniors/college students (w/ID). Admission is free of charge for members

Wizard Of Oz Production Concept Paintings Bring $45,625 At Heritage Auctions A pair of rare, pre-production concept paintings from the 1939 MGM classic “The Wizard of Oz,” used to craft two of the movie’s most beloved scenes, sold for a combined $45,625 in Heritage Auction’s $1.2+ million Entertainment & Music Memorabilia
Signature Auction on Aug. 23 in Beverly Hills, Calif. The 600-lot auction also featured a Lansky Bros. leather coat worn and owned by Elvis Presley, which sold for $35,000, more than eight times its estimate. “The Wizard of Oz has a large and devoted collecting
base, but these two paintings could stand alone as wonderful works of fine art,” said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment & music memorabilia at Heritage. “This auction was everything we want for our clients: uncommon memorabilia and passionate bidders.” Among the unusual items crossing the block was a Harley Davidson motorcycle, previously owned by Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx of the glam metal band Mötley Crüe, which sold for $32,500. The 1976 FLH was customized for Sixx by the lead mechanic of the infamous Hell’s Angels. A Gibson Double Neck Guitar owned and played by Jimmy Page and Mötley Crüe’s Mick Mars and John Coabi surpassed its estimate to end at $27,500. A large selection of

memorabilia from famous musicians included Presley’s 1956 twice-signed contract with the William Morris Agency, a contract that would quickly transition Elvis to The King of Rock and Roll. It saw interest from eight bidders before ending at $30,000.

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Glistening Glory: Collectible Cased Glass By Donald-Brian Johnson
“Bend me, shape me, any way you want me. . . Glass. While it is being formed, you can bend it and you can shape it. You can mold, slump, fuse, or crackle it. Pressed glass? Check. Blown glass? That’s on the list, too. Plus, there’s sculpted glass, engraved glass, woven glass, and, of course, cut glass. And then there’s cased glass. The “look of cased glass can easily be captured in the mind’s eye. Contrasting layers of varied glass colors, (often cranberry and white, cobalt and white, or either
with clear), are fused together. Patterns in the exterior layer are “cut to the inner layer, revealing the color variance beneath. But, in keeping with the Victorian taste for embellishment, the gloss goes even further. Often, the pieces include gold detailing on the exterior layer, enameled illustrations (usually floral), and, in especially elaborate designs, dangling clear arrowhead prisms, faceted to catch the light. The interior layer of cased glass is, in effect, encased in the exterior, both layers of equal thickness. The process is repeated for any additional layers. Cutaways in the outer cased glass layer expose the inner contrast. The cutaways, achieved through grinding, are often repeated geometric
or nature motifs, their edges defined with gold striping. Although sometimes referred to as “cameos, that term is not really technically accurate. A “cameo is the raised portion remaining after a surface glass layer, often opaque white, has been hand-carved, acid-etched, or “cut with the use of mechanical grinding wheel. In the strictest glassblower’s definition of cased glass, a piece of one color has already been fashioned, and the new

The Barbizon School painters were greatly influenced by the Romantic movement, producing works inspired by the powerful forces of nature. Surprisingly, despite his pivotal role in French art and his profound impact on the development of landscape painting, Rousseau has never before been the subject of a mono-
graphic exhibition. Comprising 70 works from private and public collections, including those of the Morgan Library & Museum, this exhibition will consider the artist’s wideranging achievements as a draftsman and his particular approach to the open-air oil sketch. It will trace Rousseau’s path to Barbizon, from his early oil sketches in the Ile-de-France to his mature works in the Auvergne, Normandy, and Fontainebleau forest, assessing the impact of the Dutch masters on the artist’s landscape imagery. Rousseau’s works, some bucolic and evocative of a simpler, pre-industrial age, others brooding, moody, and redolent with lingering vestiges of Romanticism or testaments to the haunting majesty of the natural world, are both appealing and instructive. Collectively, this selection chronicles Rousseau’s artistic

blowing a new glass layer within an original completed layer. In both cases, the layers are then fused together. Among the most popular manifestations of cased glass: decanters, tumblers, goblets, cruets, bowls, plates, vases, epergnes, dresser boxes, perfume bottles, and even pendants. Most imposing are “mantel lustres,” (also known as “spill vases”), oversize open-top vases adorned with prisms. The upper-class Victorian drawing room was chock-ablock with “stuff.” Ornate velvet settees and loveseats jostled for floor space, as did tables crowded with curios of every shape, size, and provenance. Amidst all the decorative clutter, cased glass, a festival of larger-than-life ornamentation, seemed right at home. More thought is required for the placement of cased glass in the modern living

Common throughout Bohemia from the early 1800s onward, cased glass made its way to France in the 1820s, and to England by the mid-1800s. The terms “overlay glass” and “cased glass” are often used interchangeably, and there’s really no contradiction in the eventual outcome. Technically, however, “overlay” refers to layering glass of different colors during the glassblowing process, resulting in the cased effect. “Casing,” as noted, refers to
