SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Collectors Are Born, Not Made
Regular readers know that I often write about this subject, but I was having a couple of chats with some serious dealers about this subject over the last few days and decided it was time for another revisit. They were discussing the difficulties of dealing with folks who had purchased antiques as “investments” during the ‘90s and early 2000s and who were now furious that the items were not worth what they had paid for the pieces. “Antiques never go down, so you must
desk as it was too expensive for him originally and thus his wisdom was valueless for lack of capital. Yes, the desk that he loved had grown in value, although I suspect today that if it came on the market that it would be priced at a fraction of what it had sold for during the heady ‘90s. If you want an investment that has a more solid return, buy the P&G or Treasury Note and skip the antiques. For years the trade has been promoting the idea that antiques are a good investment and thus a great reason to get into collecting. While I think antiques CAN be a good investment, this should
not be the primary reason to buy. And, as an axiom, if you buy strictly as investment, you will almost always fall short. Why? Because the antiques market is very subjective. It is fickle about what is fashionable. Remember when Barbra Streisand created a market in Arts and Crafts, Oprah for Shaker items, and the City of Harrisburg for Civil War items? Those were momentary bubbles that people rode, but then they burst and prices reset back to normal. Similarly, and this one is particularly a bite for the “investor-collector,” is what happens when such individuals go to sell. It used to be,
and still is true to some extent today, that dealers will protect their clients by offering buybacks on items. That sounds great, although for legendary dealer Joseph Duveen it became a nightmare as he set increasingly high prices on things and then had to buy them back for that price in order to protect his reputation
as the best of the best. The other option is the auction route but that is not a sure-fire way for the investor to proceed. Why? Because collectors don’t want to fund a living collector’s habit but they get mighty sentimental over a dead one! Yup, unlike shares of stock that are traded back and forth without

have ripped me off,” was the cry reported to me by one brow-beaten dealer. I remember about 20 years ago being given a book on collecting antiques as an investment, and it was filled with tables showing that French furniture did better than American but that was still better than English, etc. I kept the book as a reminder of the silliness of the investorcollector who sees antiques like Proctor and Gamble (P&G) common stock or Treasury Notes. It also reminded me of a collector who I knew who bragged about how he “could” have purchased a famous American desk for little money and that his wise “investment” would have netted for him a huge “return.” The irony was that he actually never did own the

SHOWS & MARKETS
SHOWS & MARKETS a six year break, it was revived this year. The show featured over 20 vendors and Myers’ antique shop was open offering quality antiques, collectibles, jewelry, advertising items, and more. Feedback from attending showgoers was positive and all were pleased to see the event back and to be greeted by nice weather with partly sunny conditions and temperatures in the upper 70s. Showgoers were able to enjoy
lunch, provided by a local fire department as a fundraiser, while dining in elegant English-inspired gardens. For information or to participate next year, contact Dale Myers Antiques at 570-836-1582 or by email at myersant@ptd.net.
Tommy “Superman” Graves Wins The 2014 NJSSA Bid-Calling Championship president of the NJSSA. In the end, Graves was chosen the winner based on the applause from the crowd for each competitor. Graves is one of five auctioneers that work for Joe Bodnar. Once a month, Bodnar’s Auctions hosts a 5,000-lot sale at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center located at 97 Sunfield Ave. in the Raritan Center in Edison, N.J. Bodnar, a two-time winner of the NJSSA award in 2009 and 2012, also participated in the event, but did not compete. Graves started working for Bodnar five years ago, going out on house calls and the clean-outs of estates, helping to set up for the monthly auction and working as a runner during the sales. “I’ve been working five years for Joe. Before that I was a cook, bartender, cashier, a lot of stuff - whatever paid the bills,” said Graves. He became an auctioneer by chance. Bodnar had recently lost one of his auctioneers and needed to find a replacement. “We were in the truck, driving back from a pickup with Joe and the other guys and Joe threw out the question, ‘Any one of you guys ever thought about being an auctioneer?’ I didn’t say anything, because they all had worked for Joe longer. I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, but no one spoke up. So I did.” “Like I said, I’ve never been afraid of doing things in front of people. Being a bartender helped, but even as a young kid, I was in the drama club at school, so I’m comfortable with that,” said Graves. Graves noted that Bodnar was generous with his time
and advice. “He bought me a CD and taught me how to do (call). He gave me lots of tips and suggestions, than he put me up there and gave me a shot.” Graves said he was compelled to participate in the bid calling contest to support Operation Shoebox New Jersey. “I’ve gone every time we’ve had the contest, to go along and just be a part of it, whatever (I) can do to help, but I never expected to win. It was a nice surprise,” stated Graves. “What really helped, though, is that Joe wasn’t in the competition and I didn’t have to go up against him,” joked Graves. “I’m lucky he wasn’t competing because he’s really good, the best.” Bodnar, Graves and the other auctioneers will be working “Bodnar’s Marathon Auction,” an upcoming 14hour non-stop sale beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. There is a preview on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The sale will feature over 5,000 lots of quality antiques and collectibles from 60 estates, including a doctor’s home that was packed with mid-century Modern signed furniture and accessories. Another highlight is a collection of over 15 Victrolas and talking machines, as well as country primitives and accessories, from a local Lawrenceville estate. English and European antiques will also be offered, with Part I of a two-part sale of military diecast toys exceeding 500 lots. For further information, call 866-349-7378 or visit www.bodnarsauction.com.

The sports memorabilia portion of the auction generated more than $47,000. Top items included an autographed Wilt Chamberlain basketball that went for a top bid of $825; a football signed by Penn State head coach James Franklin for $775; a Yogi Berra-signed baseball for $735; and a Johnny Bench-signed baseball bat, which sold for $500. There were a variety of “deals on wheels” up for bid, including two used cars, a motorcycle, a restored tractor, and for the second year, a new Amish carriage. This unique item trotted home with a lucky bidder for $9,600. The Camp Chimaqua Quilt, created by children who attended the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss overnight bereavement camp, was claimed for a heartwarming bid of $700. donated their time and energy, the artists and quilt makers who handmade and donated their unique pieces, and the thousands of attendees who come out to the auction each year and bid from their hearts.” Generosity is shown in many ways each year at the auction. One tradition that has continued since the auction began in 1984 is the auctioning of a special full sheet cake designed with the Hospice Labor Day Auction logo. The sheet cake comes up on the auction block and the bidding rapidly increases to hundreds of dollars. Bidders then turn the cake back to the auctioneer to sell again. A second and third bidder also pays hundreds of dollars and gives the cake back to auction off again. This year’s sheet cake raised a total of $2,775. “So many people bid on auction items as a way to say thank you for what this organization did for someone in their family,” said Knaub. “Thanks to their commitment, we are able to continue to provide quality, compassionate care to so many who are coping with the physical and emotional challenges of serious illness, end of life and loss.”

Tommy “Superman” Graves swooped in and blew away the competition at the New Jersey State Society of Auctioneers (NJSSA) Bid Calling championship at the TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J. The competition was held at the conclusion of the Somerset Patriots baseball game Sept. 7 and featured three auctioneers standing atop the first base dugout with bidders spread out in the box seats behind the dugout. The charity event raised $1,300 for Operation Shoebox New Jersey, a non-profit volunteer organization that ships personal care packages to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas. Autographed bats, hats, baseballs and limited edition prints were featured in the sale. True to form, “Superman” wore his trademark red, blue and yellow Superman shirt beneath his civilian clothes, in this case, a parrot green tie and gecko-green shirt. Out of respect for his superhero, he did wear a silver belt buckle with the “S” logo. “The first time I went to an auction I only had one suit and it was bright blue. It caught everyone’s eye, people focused on me and as an auctioneer you want to catch people’s attention,” said Graves, of New Brunswick, N.J. His wardrobe has since expanded, the brighter the better. His daily attire usually includes something having to do with Superman. Graves said “Smallville,” a television series broadcast between 2001-11 that chronicled the life of Clark Kent/Superman, is what inspired his admiration for the Superman character. “With all of his power, he just wants to do good and to help people,” explained Graves. “I’m motivated by that, doing what’s right. I liked that, and it seemed like something to aspire to. “You put on that Superman shirt, people expect you to live up to what he stands for and that’s something good to put on yourself. It makes me live up to be the best I can be.” In addition to Graves, auctioneers Bob Dan of Max Spann Auctions in Annandale, N.J., and Alfred Finocchiaro of Finocchiaro Auctions of Hightstown, N.J., did their best to entice bidders to buy. Finocchiaro was the champion bid caller in 2011, and Dan is the former
There was overwhelming community support at the Hospice & Community Care’s 30th Annual Labor Day Auction, resulting in a record breaking $470,000 raised for the Lancaster, Pa., nonprofit, to benefit patients and families in their care. The Labor Day Auction serves as the organization’s largest fundraising event, with funds supporting community members of all ages coping with serious illness, end of life and loss. The two-day event, held every year at the Lampeter Fairgrounds on the Saturday and Monday of Labor Day weekend, featured multiple simultaneous auctions, with new and used items, artwork, vacation packages, sports memorabilia, plants and garden supplies, used vehicles, and even an Amish carriage on the auction block. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the event, the organization held a special “Hospice Days of Care” auction, with a goal set to raise enough funds to pay for a total of 30 days of hospice care. The average cost to provide care for one patient for one day is $189. In 2013, Hospice & Community Care provided nearly $900,000 of charitable care to patients who did not have the resources to pay for the hospice and palliative care they needed. Far surpassing the goal of 30 days of care, generous auction bidders supported 84 days of care, providing $15,876 for charitable hospice care. “We are sincerely grateful for the overwhelming support we received at the Labor Day Auction,” said Steve Knaub, president and CEO of Hospice & Community Care. “With the entire health care industry feeling the impact of recent Medicare changes, community support that enables us to provide this charitable care is more important than ever. We continue to be amazed and humbled by our community’s continuing dedication to our hospice mission.” “Every one of the thousands of items that were up for bid was donated by businesses and individuals in our community,” continued Knaub. “The auction would not be possible without the generosity of these individuals, as well as our generous sponsors, the hundreds of volunteers who selflessly

knowledge or care as to who owned them, antique ownership has memory. Collectors remember who owned an item and that can affect the price. When I say that collectors are born, what I reference is that one either has the passion to acquire things or you don’t. And if you don’t, then it is probably best that you not get into collecting as an investment!

Fooled By Fakes
By Anita Stratos
Spurious Sterling Silver Marks themselves. During the 18th century, for example, a larger English piece would mostly likely have its hallmarks sort of randomly scattered or spread, whereas a smaller piece would have them more in line. If you find a larger 18th century piece with close-set marks in a straight line, you may be looking at a “reassigned” base that’s been cut from one piece and soldered on another. Further investigation would be needed to authenticate a large piece with such marks. The presence of hallmarks also doesn’t prove that an item is original and wasn’t reproduced by casting. Forgers create a cast of hallmarks from an original piece, then use it to make a forgery. When identical hallmarks or entire items are cast multiple times, their hallmarks have the exact same positioning, since they’re all copies of one original. Up through the middle of the 18th century, hallmarks were applied by hand, so no two pieces would have their hallmarks in exactly the same positions. Cast marks also aren’t as crisp or clean as those created by punches (some are downright illegible), which is the biggest clue. Numerous experts have stated that silver napkin rings are among the vintage/antique items most often reproduced through casting. However, some forgers have been known to make their own punches so the hallmarks have the correct appearance. One clue to this is a lighter silver color, or lack of patina, immediately surrounding the hallmark. When hallmarks are punched, they have sharp edges which
are softened during the final polishing process. Because of this, forgers need to remove the sharp edges. This process removes the patina from the silver around the new hallmarks. Also watch for evidence of complete hallmark replacement, because some 18th-century American silver is more valuable than its English counterparts, some fraudsters remove the English hallmarks and replace them with American marks. Sometimes authentic hallmarks appear on incorrect pieces, which is just as illegal as fake hallmarks. This happens when forgers cut the section of a sterling item with hallmarks and solder it onto a newer piece or a less valuable old piece that may or may not be sterling silver. This is easily done on a piece with a foot or pedestal. The foot is removed, the cut piece is soldered into place and the foot is reattached, covering the soldered edges. This creates an extra layer. It can be difficult to recognize this type of deceit, but there are a couple of things you can look for. If there is a “ghost mark” inside the base of the piece made by the original mark, make sure it matches the mark you see on the outside in every way. A missing ghost mark can also be a clue, but those are sometimes removed during the final finishing, so it’s just one consideration in authentication. An outstanding website, www.925-1000.com, the “Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks, and Makers’ Marks,” reprinted an article from 1899 about spurious marks found on sterling
pieces. In this article are representations of fake marks and descriptions of the pieces on which they were found. They were discovered and seized by The Goldsmith’s Company in London. This is an extremely valuable reference for any collector of English silver. Next month, we’ll explore another type of silver fraud, alterations. Two photos are via Wikipedia, one property of author. At a Glance: Signs of a forged hallmark: 1. Incorrect placement of hallmarks. 2. Multiple pieces with identical hallmark placement/appearance.
3. Second hallmarked “disc” between foot and body. 4. Lighter color around hallmarks may indicate a more recent addition and buffing. 5. Date hallmark and duty mark are from different periods. 6. Stretched hallmarks indicate reshaping. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a
few: Association of Small Collectors of Antique Silver (http://www.ascasonline.org); A Small Collection of Antique Silver and Objects Vertu (http://www.silvercollection.it) [This is not actually a “small collection,” there are over 1,000 pages of images); “Miller’s Antique Marks” by Judith Miller; “English Silver Hall-Marks” by Judith Banister; and “American Silversmiths and Their Marks (1650-1850)” by Stephen G. PUBLIC AUCTION

So you’re at an auction or an antique shop and you see a gorgeous 18th-century silver teapot that you just have to add to your collection. You turn it over and it has a series of English hallmarks. Is your authentication process complete? Not by a longshot. Hallmarks alone aren’t proof of authenticity. An item or series of hallmarks may be cast or the entire piece may be an altered item, that is, transformed from one type of item into another. We’ll deal with altered silver next month, for now we’ll just focus on hallmark issues. Hallmarks are the first thing most of us check. First we need to keep in mind that while some forged hallmarks are modern, others were put on a century or so ago, so they will show the right type of wear. Therefore, the look of the hallmark isn’t a reliable method of authentication. You may find a forged piece that’s missing one of the hallmarks, like the date letter. Of course, this isn’t always the case, but it’s something to watch for, especially in early flatware examples. Check carefully, though, in case the mark was lightly struck or is in an area prone to heavier wear, it could just be very worn and hard to see. Another key is that the marks should belong together. Date marks and maker’s mark need to match up (a date mark for a maker no longer in business during that year or prior to the maker’s existence is an obvious giveaway). A maker’s mark should have the correct city mark, etc. The placement and positioning of the hallmarks can be as important as the marks

Pair Of Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Vases Sells For $1.2 Million At Doyle New York’s Asian Works Of Art Auction Doyle New York’s Asian Works of Art auction on Sept. 15 attracted strong competition from an international audience of bidders participating in the salesroom, on the telephones, and live on the Internet. The sale offered over 350 lots, showcasing the arts of China, Japan and Southeast Asia from the Neolithic Period through the 20th century. Offerings included porcelain, jades, scholars’ objects, furniture, bronzes, screens and paintings. Highlighting the sale was a pair of 19th-century Chinese Famille Rose glazed porcelain covered vases that achieved a stunning $1,205,000, shattering the
pre-sale estimate of $10,000-$15,000. Measuring 16 inches in height and bearing the Qianlong seal mark, the vases were decorated with blossoming branches on a turquoise ground. Chinese jades in the sale featured a pair of 19th-century white jade chrysanthemumshape bowls from the collection of Jerome M. and Rhoda S. Fischer. Measuring 6.0875 inches in diameter, the bowls

soared past their estimate of $30,000-$50,000, fetching a surprising $100,000. From the same collection was a pair of 18thcentury light celadon jade cups, 4.5 inches in diameter, that sold for $56,250, well over their estimate of $25,000-$35,000. The selection of Chinese scholars’ objects was highlighted by a Qing Dynasty agarwood sceptre measuring 17.5 inches in length. Elaborately carved as a fruiting gourd vine and in very good condition, the sceptre achieved a stunning $81,250, many times its estimate of $15,000-$25,000. Chinese furniture also performed very strongly at the auction. A large zitan table estimated at $30,000-$50,000 fetched $93,750, a pair of 19th/20th-century huanghuali horseshoe back armchairs estimated at $4,000-$6,000 sold for a surprising $56,250, and an 18th/19th-century hanghuali side table estimated at $3,000-$5,000 achieved an equally impressive $40,625. With competitive bidding, the sale totaled $3,311,438, more than doubling its estimate of $1,048,600-$1,597,100, with 79 percent sold by lot and 94 percent by value. Since 1937, The Silver Shop in Princeton, N.J., has catered to a selective clientele that included not only blue-blooded Princetonians but also celebrities, politicians and design luminaries from around the world. America’s oldest retail silver specialist in continuous operation, The Silver Shop was the sort of quietly elite establishment where, in its earlier days, one might bump into Sir Laurence Olivier, Albert Einstein or members of the Guggenheim family browsing the upscale wares. Later, it became a favored gift emporium for numerous New Jersey governors, as well as tastemakers like Frank Gehry, Martha Stewart and Michael Graves. The Silver Shop also welcomed among its high-profile guests Bruce Springsteen, who would purchase gifts for his mother, and Brooke Shields, who actually lived above the shop while a student at Princeton. After 77 years and four devoted owners, The Silver Shop has now closed its hallowed doors in tree-lined Palmer Square, and its entire contents, including its custom-made mirrored showcases, are being sent to auction. Material Culture of Philadelphia has been chosen to handle the dispersal of goods and fixtures, which it

Other outstanding photographs in The Art Institute’s collection include two works by Edward Weston: an awe-inspiring vista “Dunes, Oceano,” 1936, estimated at $70,000-90,000, printed no later than 1951 and depicting a favored landscape of the artist, and the majestic “Nude,” 1936, estimated at $40,000-60,000, printed circa 1953 by Brett Weston. The auction will also feature Irving Penn’s timelessly elegant “Mermaid Dress (Rochas),” Lisa FonssagrivesPenn, 1950, estimated at $80,000-120,000, an homage to his beloved wife and muse; Lewis Wickes Hine’s “Sadie, a Cotton Mill Spinner,” from Lancaster, S.C., in 1908, estimated at $60,000-80,000, a superb example of Hine’s groundbreaking work on underage laborers in America, a body of work that subsequently led to Federal regulation; André Kertész’s “Untitled (Distortion #167),” 1933, estimated at $30,000-40,000, depicting a quintessentially Modernist configuration of the human form; Ansel Adams’s “Moonrise,” in Hernandez, N.M., 1941, estimated at $30,000-50,000, illustrating the celebrated American photographer’s love for the American West; and Walker Evans’ “Sidewalk and
