It will be the final onsite sale for the late Lester Breininger of Robesonia, Berks County, Pa., and signaled the near end of a long chapter with the well-known collection and property. “The Breininger family has said that it [the property] has served the family well, but it will find a new owner today,” said John Hess from the podium at noon on Sept. 24. Named after iron industry magnate George Taylor, the 22-room Victorian era house built in 1886, along with roughly 3.7 acres directly behind the property, changed hands when John Hess sold the real estate to

neighbor and antiques dealer Greg Kramer for $244,000. “It’s a fabulous place and obviously a lot of house,” said Kramer. He explained the decision had a lot to due based on price, which many people in attendance agreed seemed like a value buy; however, considerable resources are needed for both upgrades and general maintenance. “It is uncertain what will happen. I may turn it over to a friend,” said Kramer. Over the past four years, the family has made

The outbuildings are in need of attention, and there are upgrades that should be addressed inside. “A Mennonite family may have interest as well,” furthered Kramer. When Lester and Barbara were first married, they rented an apartment in Taylor Mansion. By 1976, they were able to own the entire property and were well on their way to filling it. The couple raised three children there and held 42 years of Porch Shows on the property. The field and old furnace master’s office across from Taylor Mansion is a seperate parcel and was not included. For over a century, the building has served as the Patriotic Order Sons of America (P.O.S. of A.) lodge. Collector Anecdotes And Antics A Look At The Other Side Of The Coin: The Possible Demise Of Numismatics Paper money. Love it or hate it, paper money is a living part of our nation’s history. First introduced in the United States by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1690, the history of any fiat currency is usually a controversial one. Collectors of paper money know this all too well. As a collectible, it trails behind coins due to the simple fact that a lot of coins contain an intrinsic value due to the precious metals they are composed of. As a result, paper money collectors have always ranked a distant second behind coin collectors in the world of numismatics. Personally, I always liked the bright colors and artistic quality of classic U.S. currency more than the simplistic designs of most of our nation’s coinage. When third party grading became an accepted practice in the field of paper money collecting, I started to build a slow but steady collection of high grade uncirculated notes, and I have yet to regret a single purchase - even for the items I thought I may have overpaid to obtain (emotion can be quite costly in the collectibles trade). When I sold off part of my
vintage comic book collection in 2015, I also consigned a portion of my high grade coin and currency collection to sweeten the deal. The auction house I chose to consign to was Heritage Auctions. Heritage Auctions did the best to promote my items, and given tight competition in a buyer’s market, I was still able to carve out a small profit on the few choice numismatic items I sold. All the items in my coin and currency collections were and are third party graded in MS-63 or better. Most items were in the coveted MS-65 to MS-66 condition range. Unfortunately, almost the entire numismatic market is currently under a lot of stress. Aside from bullion buyers, most higher end collectors are not paying big premiums for key date and easily obtainable items. The currency market has been hit the hardest since the financial crisis due to the fact that most numismatic collectors would rather shell out money for a classic gold coin than tie their money up in a classic U.S. bank note, regardless of how aesthetically appealing or hard to find the note may be. Long-term dealers are reporting a buyer’s market in the paper money field that is affecting both the casual
secondary marketplace and even the high-end marketplace often thought to be immune from most downturns. Unless the item is extremely rare, popular, or in high grade as well as in high demand, prices are no better today than they were in 2008. In fact, prices on high grade common notes and series like the beloved large size 1918 one-dollar Federal Reserve Note series have dropped across the board. Even gold certificates from the 1920s have experienced a downturn of sorts, with most buyers more interested in Saint Gaudens gold eagle coins in a similar price range. It is very difficult to sell a high grade certified gold certificate when for almost the same price a savvy buyer can score a high grade gold coin from the same era. Sad to say, but the greater coin collecting market is not fairing much better when you remove the buyers looking for bullion-related coins and precious metals. The hobby of numismatics has often been populated by older, typically more conservative consumers. With each passing year, the market seems to be getting smaller and smaller. Younger collectors under the age of 45 are not entering the numismatic field quickly
enough to replace these dwindling numbers. As a result, there are a lot of great deals on the secondary market if you know where to look. Just don’t expect to get coins with a high precious metal content below their intrinsic values. Most precious metal investors regularly monitor and cross invest in the numismatic field as well to ensure they have maximum diversification. I have commented on the slow demise of the numismatic field in the past. While the market for collectible U.S. coins has always gone through relatively predictable and expected peaks and valleys, it is the market for paper money that most concerns me. Few collectors are entering this field, and with prices consistently being depressed due to a lack of demand, a lot of could-be enthusiasts are on the sidelines and not spending any kind of big money. Today’s collectors are also investors, and the thought of spending a significant sum on an item that may be sold at a loss scares a lot of would-be collectors. This in turn is affecting the market as more and more high grade material sells for bargain prices at auction or sits in dealer inventories waiting to be reduced even further. With only a limited amount of

said that time is both an enemy and a friend. Unfortunately, the field of numismatics is learning this all too quickly. There is still plenty of time to reverse this trend, and in the end, it is time that will tell the story of our nation’s financial history. Until next time, happy collecting!

disposable income, a collector has to make smart choices about what to collect for the long term. The book’s laminated cover features a sepia toned photo image of a rare stereopticon view of East Main Street looking east from the roof of the Mt. Vernon Inn located on the southeast corner of the square. The view, which dates from 1867, is the oldest known photographic image of the town and features the Ephrata Mt. Springs Hotel perched on the hillside overlooking the town in the background. In the historical society’s earlier publications, is has been its practice to publish early photographs of the town accompanied by the street address and a brief description of the site. Realizing a change in demographics within the Ephrata community, the format of this book has deviated from those previously published. In most instances, multiple photographs are included, that show the building or location during the late 19th or early 20th centuries accompanied by a view of the same building or location during the last half of the 20th century or the 21st century. This comparison concept enables the reader to see the building or site as it once appeared along with its more recent or current appearance.

Pennsylvania antiquing community. The ADABC held its first antique show in 1952 and was charted as a non-profit in 1954. The group has always maintained a set of by-laws and set the standard for ethical behavior for those in the trade. The organization has promoted a number of antique shows in a variety of venues in the Reading area. In the past, shows were held at Goodwill Ballroom, Abe Lincoln Hotel, Reading Motor Inn, Stokesay Castle, River Edge, The Sheraton, Scottish Rite Temple and Leesport Farmer’s Market. Three years ago, in an effort to
improve and update the show, the committee decided to move to the Kempton Community Center. The location was chosen to better reach the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey showgoers, as well as neighboring counties. The small town of Kempton is located in a special part of northern Berks County in Albany Township not far from I-78. It is north of Kutztown and close to popular destinations such as Hawk Mountain, Long Trout Winery, Crystal Cave, Deitsch Eck restaurant, Yuengling Brewery, and Cabela’s, just to name a few spots.

Rare early American texts with rocksolid provenance led Heritage Auctions’ $1.2-plus million Rare Books Auction on Sept. 15, as a copy of “The Federalist, previously owned by New York Post founder Samuel Boyd, sold for $175,000. The auction came in at 134 percent above expectations and had a sell-through rate of 97 percent. “Our selection of rare Americana and modern literature were particularly strong in this auction, said James Gannon, director of Rare Books at Heritage. “We saw intense bidding that pushed many first editions well beyond our expectations. An influential copy of Joseph Smith’s “The Book of Mormon, owned and annotated by press foreman Pomeroy Tucker, sold for $100,000 against a $70,000 estimate. Ironically, Tucker would move on from his printing career to become a journalist and New York politician, and he later penned “Origin, Rise, and Progress of Mormonism, a book arguing that Smith was dishonest. by Robeson of the Manada Furnace sold for $650. A sandstone 11-by-4-feet trough sold for $8,000. It had been moved offsite for the purpose of selling the property but for many years was used behind the pottery shop. It was made by Benjamin Sebastian at age 17 in nearby Host. Lester bought it from a descendant in the mid20th century. He made two copies in 1966 with his initials and that date. The two copies sold for $140. “Visiting Taylor Mansion and the Breiningers for the first time, I believe in 1969, affirmed everything I loved about local history and my culture, said friend of the family and local artist Barbara Strawser. For many of those in attendance, this final sale was a fun, nostaglic event and marked the end of what has been a five-year saga. A few things, namely early LB redware and
