New Galleries To Open At The Berks History Center T
he Berks History Center recently announced the Saturday, Nov. 14, public opening of two new galleries dedicated to Pennsylvania German folk art, Berks County clocks and furniture. Made possible through a generous bequest of 33 artifacts from the estate of noted
collector John J. Snyder Jr., the installation of the new galleries was directed by Lisa Minardi, an authority on Pennsylvania German decorative arts and assistant curator at Winterthur Museum. The Berks History Center is located in Reading, Pa., and was formerly known as the Historical Society of Berks County. Highlights of the new Pennsylvania German gallery will include two Berks County painted chests, one with a horse-and-rider design dated 1787 and the other an
Embroidery Artist chest made for Dietrich Gackley of Lower Heidelberg Township in 1798. Two paintings by noted Berks County Almshouse artist Charles Hofmann are included along with a saffron box by Joseph Lehn, a striking painted “Bucher” box made for Nicholas Keim of Berks County, a Peter Derr fat lamp, and a painted corner cupboard filled with spatterware. There is also a stunning lineup of tall clocks with elaborately inlaid or carved cases. The second gallery will feature Berks County clocks and furniture,
primarily from the Snyder collection. Alongside a flamboyant, fulllength portrait of noted Reading clockmaker Daniel Rose is one of his earliest known clock movements and two clocks made by his brother-in-law, Daniel Oyster. Another section explores the work of Reading cabinetmaker Daniel Rhein, who produced highly sophisticated inlaid Federal furniture that is often mistaken for
Philadelphia. Three clocks, a slant-front desk, and tall chest-ofdrawers from Rhein’s workshop are included in the display. An 8-by-11-foot model of (Continued on page 2)

“I try for the best, and it is a masterpiece,” said private collector Jerry Lauren of New York City, referring to an important seven-gallon stoneware cooler from Baltimore, Md., with rare incised eagle decoration which sold for a new world-record price of $438,000 at Crocker Farm’s auction in Sparks, Md., on Oct. 17. He was the buyer bidding by phone. The underbidder was dealer Kelly Kinzle bidding in the salesroom. “We think it is the best piece of stoneware to sell since 1991,” said Tony Zipp of Crocker Farm. In 1991, the iconic William Crolius inkstand sold at Sotheby’s for a then-record price. The inkstand has since been gifted to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The stoneware cooler with incised Federal eagle design was attributed to either Henry Remmey Sr. or Jr. and made in Baltimore between the years 1812 and 1829. The sale of the cooler is the highest bid ever recorded for American stoneware ($420,000). Crocker Farm charges a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

“The eagle is amazing. It supercedes anything. I search for 10s, and this is a 12,” said Lauren following the auction. Lauren is the creative director and executive vice president of men’s design at Ralph Lauren. It is a position he has held for 42 years.
A fresh-to-the-market item, the cooler was purchased by the consignor’s father in the early 1970s. It has large open handles with added segments in the center of each handle for added stability. The incised eagle design was an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States and, according to the Zipps, copied by the decorator from the reverse of coins in circulation at the time. Charles Sims’ “heraldic eagle” appeared on the back of most coins and depicts a spreadwing eagle facing left, toward the arrows, its head encircled by stars and clouds, its talons clutching olive branches and arrows with a shield across its chest. The majestic ovoid form stands 19.25 inches tall and had some minor chips to the stepped bunghole and a crack extending from the rim to the midsection. It also had some minor rim chips due to use and age. The deep cobalt was vivid and stood out in the design. “Its presence takes the air out of the room,” said a dealer at the sale. A wise man once said, “For every item there is a price.” There is no place where this statement has more meaning than that of an auction house. Recently, I consigned most of my vintage comic book collection to auction back in May of 2015.
Before this time, I had very little experience dealing with consignments to major auction houses. Unfortunately, this lament is all too common, and very few experts in the trade provide any advice or assistance in regards to selling one’s treasured collection via auction. I have always felt that this is an important topic of discussion and one that should be discussed much more often. As a result, my next several

upcoming articles will be devoted to this topic. When someone decides to part with their collection, they have many options for its ultimate disposal. The owner can simply decide to sell the items on their own terms, whether through an online auction or a collector specific Internet based forum. Over the years, these two options have proven to be very popular, and the latter option generally involves almost no fees paid by the seller. Unfortunately, these two options also have the most risk for the seller to encounter fraud and other issues that are generally avoided by going through a third party seller like a fullservice auction house. This is one reason why auction houses are popular for the sale of various art, antiques, and collectibles. Hopefully, should you decide to consign items to an auction house, the decision will be made at the best of times and not under any kind of financial distress, a physical illness, a time of grief, or due to a separation from a spouse, as these are some of the worse times to be forced to make a decision to sell any kind of item or collectible.

I am a strong proponent of the belief that collectors should try their best to liquidate assets of a collectible nature when they are alive and things are fairly stable. It is at these times that a seller is in the best possible frame of mind to ensure not only that they are making the best possible decision, but also that they can negotiate the best possible terms for their consignment.

William Bunch Auctions presented its annual Fall Fine and Decorative Arts sale with 1,000 plus lots spread over two days on Sept. 28 and 29. All prices reported are hammer and do not include buyer’s premiums. The first session featured 200 lots of fine art. Upcoming Pook & Pook Sales Set Pook & Pook Inc.’s cataloged International Auction will present an enticing collection of decorative objects from all over the world. Taking place Saturday, Oct. 31, at 9 a.m., the sale draws its strength from its artistic offerings in oil, wood, and
ceramics. Several noteworthy pieces of fine art will be sold, including a collection of miniature military portraits by British artist John Buncombe. Other noteworthy items include a French bronze, cloisonné, and
porcelain-mounted mantel clock with a miniature watercolor portrait ornamenting its jeweled pendulum. A large portrait of a woman and canaries by French artist Joseph-Désiré Court and an oil-on-canvas portrait of a horse and jockey in the manner of Thomas Spencer are additional highlights, as is a unique piece by Brazilian artist Juarez Machado. The International auction will also feature respected artists Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam, whose pioneering work in the Western Oriental Style helped lay the foundation for Vietnamese modern art. Their inspired blending of traditional Vietnamese art and French salon influences has incited worldwide appreciation. Pook & Pook Inc.’s Asian Here is a group shot of material from the online-only sale to be art offerings extend into held Nov. 2.

Several fine pieces of Chinese export porcelain will be sold, such as a famille rose covered soup tureen, ca. 1790, with boar’s head handles and a pair of Chinese Sancai glaze bowls. Moving from porcelain instruments to real ones, the International Sale includes a lovely 1914 Lyon & Healy gold concert harp, style 21, with its original packing crate, as well as three early Selmer saxophones and an assortment of mouthpieces. Corporation) and consisted of only quality key issues from the most sought-after titles in high grade condition, I knew I had a lot of power in negotiating the terms of my consignment. This is a distinction that must be made. Had I been consigning only one $1,000 item or an item that was not already third party graded and in demand, the terms of my consignment would be vastly different. The books I sold along with other consignments in the coin and currency realms (also already graded) were worth well over $60,000, and that was the low presale estimate. All the auction house
had to do was scan in each item, write a brief synopsis based on what was already stated on the third party holder, and promote the items as agreed upon by the terms provided. There were no unnecessary disputes over condition and no need to research any of the items for provenance or authenticity. This is one reason why when investors ask me what area of collectibles is best to deal in for potential profit I always recommend any item that can easily be certified by a third party grading company. The benefits to how these items are treated at specialty auction houses that cater to them is nothing

handles and floral sprays.
Collector Anecdotes And Antics (Continued from page 3)
Most of the best regional and international auction houses have a standard agreement of terms that govern how they handle most consignments. A lot of these consignment rates can be extremely monetarily beneficial to the auction house and downright disappointing to the actual consignor. Combined with the fact that higher end auction houses also charge the buyer a buyer’s premium of around 20 percent, most auction houses have profitable terms for themselves. I personally do not find it acceptable to consign my
items to any auction house that wants to charge me a consignment rate of 20 or 25 percent and then charge the buyer of my goods an additional 15 or 20 percent on top of that. Even in the best case scenario, the auction house would be making 35 percent off of the sale of my items, and that is 35 percent less I could be getting if I sold the items privately or through another venue. On the flip side of that proverbial coin, I also recognize that each item being offered is unique, and the auction house does have a lot of work to ensure my items get the highest bids possible within the market I
am selling. Therefore, before anyone takes issue with the amount of commission rates charged by most auction houses, it must be understood that all consignments are, in fact, unique and have to be handled as such. It is in this misunderstanding where most collectors fail to grasp an important distinction that has to be made. To use myself as an example, when I sold most of my vintage comic book collection, I consulted with a lot of dealers, associates, and fellow auction houses. Since my collection was already third party graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty
short of astounding, as most are treated more like commodities than that of collectibles. This is especially appealing if a seller is looking for a quick sale or a cash advance based on the presale estimate of the collection. In my next article, I will examine what terms should be deemed acceptable to any collector looking at consigning a major collection to an auction house. I will also discuss the various pitfalls a consignor can encounter and what should be accepted for smaller or lower valued items and collectibles. Until that time, I thank you for reading!

very fine- condition with a small piece missing at one corner brought a whopping $15,535 at auction. The poster’s garish graphics are outstanding, no doubt contributing to its value. The movie’s insert poster (14-by-36-inches) also boasts of some great graphics. “Jeepers! The Creepers are after Bud & Lou!” proclaims the poster’s come-on. One restored example in fine-very fine condition realized a top bid of $7,768 at auction. The rarest poster for the film may well be the huge 24 sheet (9-by-20-feet), which was issued for billboard-type display. Not many of these survived, with one example
in fine- condition selling at auction for $11,500. That’s a lot of poster at 20 feet in length, so whoever purchased it must have had the room to display it. Lobby cards (11-by-14inches), which were prominently displayed in theater lobbies to promote the film, are also in big demand. A complete eight-card set in graded CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) very fine-near mint condition brought $6,573 at auction. Foreign movie posters for “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” are also in demand. In the United Kingdom, the film was released in 1948 under the curious title “Abbott &
Costello Meet the Ghosts.” The standard British quad poster (30-by-40-inches) is a dandy, with one restored example bringing a top bid of $7,170 at auction. Interestingly, “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” didn’t hit Japanese shores until six years after the American release, debuting in that Asian country on Dec. 15, 1954. A professionally restored Japanese B2 poster (20-by-29-inches) in finevery fine condition on linen sold at auction for $2,390. Glenn Strange as the Frankenstein monster dominates the poster’s rich graphics, with Lugosi’s Count Dracula curiously absent. Other posters can also be
found for foreign releases of “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” under a variety of alternate titles. They include the following countries, with original release date indicated in parentheses: Sweden (Aug. 26, 1948), Australia (Nov. 25, 1948), France (Nov. 24, 1949), Italy (April 4, 1950), Spain (April 8, 1950), Denmark (Nov. 6, 1950), Hong Kong (June 21, 1951) and West Germany (Aug. 22, 1958). By most accounts “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” was a pleasure to film. Off camera, Bela Lugosi, who was paid $15,000 for his role as Dracula, engaged in piethrowing contests with Bud
and Lou and fellow horror performers Chaney and Strange. And when Strange tripped over a cable and broke his ankle, it was Chaney who expertly stepped in, donning the bulky latex headpiece devised by Chris Mueller and playing the Frankenstein monster in one scene until Strange could return to the set and finish the picture wearing an ankle cast. “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” is definitely a fun picture, a pleasurable film to watch, and one that is still highly treasured by both fans and collectors today. Chesley Bonestell Paintings Highlight Philip Weiss Auction An archive of nine original oilon-board paintings by Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986), the artist whose designs and illustrations were a major influence on science fiction art and earned him the nickname the “Father of Modern Space Art,” recently sold for a combined $135,000 at auction. The sale was held Sept. 10 by Philip Weiss Auctions in the firm’s Lynbrook, N.Y., gallery. As an early pioneer creator of astronomical art, Bonestell was so influential he actually helped inspire the American space program. He was awarded a medal by the British Interplanetary Society and has a place in the International Space Hall of Fame and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. A crater on Mars was named after him, as was an asteroid
(the asteroid 3129 Bonestell). Bonestell’s paintings are prized by collectors and institutions such as the National Air and Space Museum and the National Collection of Fine Arts. His classic work “Titan,” an image of Saturn seen from its giant moon of the same name, has been called “the painting that launched a thousand careers.” Among his admirers was the German rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun. Four of the nine paintings in the auction did particularly well. All appeared in the July 1947 issue of “Coronet Magazine.” The work titled “Chicago at the Temperature of Melting Lead Due to Solar Disturbance or Orbit Disruption” brought $35,650, while the painting titled “New York Has Been Struck by a Meteor, Perhaps a Thousand Feet or So in Diameter, etc.” (1946) sold for $29,325. A third painting, “A White Dwarf Star Has Approached Near Enough to Nine original oil-on-board paintings by Chesley A Green Bay Packers sweater owned and worn by the late Allow its Powerful Gravitational Pull Bonestell (1888-1986), including this one shown, Packers coaching legend Vince Lombardi sold for $17,250. When the calendar turns to November, one holiday comes to mind, Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving day is a national holiday of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated with family, friends, one great meal, and, sometimes, even shopping. The pumpkin is an important part of that meal. There is pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cheesecake, and, of course, pumpkin pie. In honor of the pumpkin, the Burlington Antique and Art Emporium promotion for October and November will be “pick a pumpkin.” With a purchase, a customer can pick a small pumpkin containing a dealer discount, gift certificate, or tasty treat. Emporium dealer Robert Weidner has also decorated the display case with antique and vintage Halloween items for sale. The Emporium is a 14,000-square-foot building housing 65 dealers always restocking their inventory. Located at 424 High St. in

Antiques & Auction News — October 30, 2015 - - 19
Pattern Glass Auction Results Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates served up a 1,629-lot auction as well as a meeting of the Early American Pattern Glass Society on Sept. 26. The top lot of the auction was a colorless, cut Tulip and Sawtooth pattern highstandard open compote, circa 1850, which sold for $6,325 against a $400-$600 estimate. Recently discovered in Maine, two determined bidders in the room recognized the rarity of the cut version of this particular pattern, driving it to a record price for a piece of cut early American pattern glass.
An important Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. Horn of Plenty/Comet pattern honey-dish/casket with undertray, made circa 184555, realized $5,462.50. This dish had a distinguished provenance, having resided in a variety of important collections. A whiskey tumbler in the same pattern, rendered in cobalt blue, sold for $2,645. A rarity in any color, the blue body has a gem-like quality. The huge sale included a large collection of ruby-stained glass objects. The highest-priced offering in that field was an Americo-Bohemian footed tumbler
engraved with an American view of “New Orleans.” The waterfront city was rendered in a panoramic scene on the tumbler front. Probably made in Bohemia, circa 1840-60, this mid-Victorian vessel sold for $4887.50, easily topping its $1,000-$1,500 estimate. The Americo-Bohemian rubystained footed tumbler engraved with a panoramic view of New Orleans, 5.5-inches high, circa 1850, sold for $4,887.50. A Jumbo figural covered fruit bowl, circa 1883, sold for $4,600.
Glass objects molded in the form of animals are ever-popular with collectors. A large frosted colorless covered fruit bowl in the form of Jumbo the elephant, with a howdah on his back forming the cover finial, probably made at the Aetna Glass & Mfg. of Bellaire, Ohio, circa 1883, sold for a hefty $4,600, nearly four times the pre-sale estimate. A covered dish in the shape of a steer’s head, in opaque white, by Challinor, Taylor & Co., circa 1885-93, sold for $2,300. The entire auction catalogue with prices realized is available at www.jeffreysevans.com.
