Kimberly K Auction LLC Sells Nearly 3,000 Lots For Daniel Bell Estate In Barto, Pa. Antique Tools, Signs, Cars, And Old Farm Equipment Just Some Of The Offerings Tucked back on a private road in rural Barto, Pa., Kimberly K. Auction LLC conducted three days of sales over a span of two weekends. The auction crew began digging and sorting through boxes and piles in mid-August to prepare. Auctioneer and owner Kim Douglass has been in the auction industry for almost 30 years and said, “These old collections are hard to come by today, and I was excited to be able to offer it for auction.” On Oct. 16, 17 and 24, she held the on-site live auction with an excited crowd in attendance. There were approximately 2,800 lots sold over the three days. “We had a lot of pre-auction excitement about the auction in general, not necessarily about any one or two particular items, but about the event’s overall offerings. I think many were excited about being able to safely attend a live auction again,” said Douglass. Since the pandemic, Kimberly K Auction LLC has been conducting online-only sales and doing well with them, yet believes live auctions are so much more exciting. The collections were from the estate of Daniel Bell and consisted of auto-related signs, early tools, plumb bobs, oyster cans, oil bottles and cans, scales of all types, coffee grinders and mills, spittoons, sausage

Just like everything else in 2020, Christmas will be different this year. The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., believes Christmas is a time of sharing, of giving, and a time with family, although the latter may be modified this year. The dealers started decorating for Christmas early, just after Halloween at the Emporium,
attempting to put a smile on shoppers’ faces. The courtyard entryway is already lit up. Each day, the dealers try to add more lights to display. This holiday season, the Emporium sales display case will contain items for train platforms, tree ornaments, and holiday decorations for the dining table. The special sales display case is located next to the front door, and each

By Michael J. McQuillen Heritage Auctions of Dallas, Texas, recently moved into a new headquarters to consolidate operations and make room for more volume in their auctions. Here, we will take a look at their political memorabilia auction #6221, which closed in September, with a review of many of the lots selling in the $4,000 and up range. Some minor foxing provided one lucky bidder with the chance to purchase a true rarity from the 1920s. A Herbert Hoover the “Clean Sweep” vacuum cleaner button was swept up at $4,250 (all prices realized include a 25-percent buyer’s premium and are rounded up to the nearest dollar). A James A. Garfield large campaign flag, 81-by-42 inches (overall) cotton flag with wear, flew high at $4,250. Selling for the same was a John F. Kennedy metal 1960 headquarters sign. The 21.75by-35-inch heavy painted metal sign was indeed likely used in the campaign headquarters. A George Washington “Eagle with Star” inaugural button, a choice example retaining the original shank, was secured at $4,750. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote was represented with a Woman’s Suffrage doublelength parade sash. The 4inch-tall sash brought $4,750. Selling a little higher was a George Washington “GW in Oval” inaugural button. The sharply struck example with the original shank realized $4,875. It required a cool $5,000 bid for one happy bidder to buy a Landon & Knox great play-onwords slogan jugate. It was a one-inch portrait with portraits of the 1936 Republicans superimposed on a sunflower. Yet another GW button, a George Washington “Dotted

of 1908. This 1.75 inch jugate sold for $9,375. A Woman’s Suffrage large graphic Votes For Women pennant, among the best designed felt pennants from the era, also brought $9,375. A $10,000 payment was needed for a Grant & Colfax bold, colorful 1868 cotton campaign banner. This image depicts a fierce eagle with a streamer in his mouth. More fabric, a Henry Clay ca. 1844 Nativist flag, previously unseen in the collecting community, 27.5-by-26.5 inches, cotton, used by an antiimmigrant group known as “Nativists” who rose to prominence in the 1844 campaign, sold for $12,500. A rare survivor, a Roosevelt & Garner jugate tire cover, 27.5-inch rain-proof tire cover with oblong portraits of the 1932 Democrats, rolled to $13,125. A Coolidge & Dawes key jugate rarity with terrific slogan 1.25-inch button featuring inclined oval portraits of the 1924 Republicans beneath a small shield was chased to a $13,750 selling price. The top selling pin-back button of the auction was a Roosevelt & Fairbanks “Roos-e-Field” jugate. There are several buttons that utilize the first syllable of TR’s last name, “Rose” and incorporate it into a rebus design. It sold for $18,750. Finally, the big money item from the sale in the political category was a Samuel Tilden portrait flag, 13.5-by-8.5-inch glazed cotton flag with portrait of the 1876 Democrat in the canton, surrounded by 39 stars. The stripes bear the inscription, “Tilden and Hendricks,” one of only two known Tilden portrait flags. When the dust settled, it had found a new home at $27,500. and Ives at very reasonable prices. There are plenty of books and guides to help you learn what to look for in buying. For me, my latest find was a copy of the assassination of Lincoln print that haunted my boyhood dreams. Peter Seibert, a native Pennsylvanian, grew up in the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as a museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Virginia, and Wyoming. He holds a Master of Arts in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interior design, and history.

lost interest in the prints. Then when we moved Virginia, I spotted a C&I print of the Battle of Williamsburg. A significant but little-known battle of the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, the battle was fought literally yards from the front door of my house. I frequently walked my dogs on the trails where the fighting occurred, and so when I saw the print, I knew that I had to have it. From there, the rest is a rekindled history. I started to collect prints by Currier and Ives again and was amazed how inexpensive many of them were. Like lusterware and brass candlesticks, they were the antiques of the past. In the 1970s, this was the hallmark of a formal Colonial interior. Everyone had to have them. And one can still find lots of fake candlesticks, luster pitchers and Currier and Ives prints that were created during this time period (and thankfully by modern standards, they are so poor that they are easy to discern). Today, one can find really wonderful images by Currier
R066445
I am sure that several collectors of Currier and Ives will take umbrage at me saying they are forgotten classics of the antiques world, but, that being said, I remember walking into Betty Smith’s antiques shop in Hummelstown, Pa., and seeing C&I prints for $700 or more back in the early 1980s. Today, those same prints can be found for often under $100, a casualty of changing times and tastes in the antiques market. The images produced by Currier and Ives spanned the 19th century and covered topics ranging from art to history to ethnicity to comedy to tragedy. They were the television of their time insofar as the topics they explored were among the most popular of their era. Looking at period photographs of the 19th century, it is easy to pick them out hanging on parlor walls. My introduction to C&I
prints began when I was working at Fort Hunter Mansion, north of Harrisburg, Pa. Hanging on the stairs to the second floor was a collection of historic prints. I recall one image of the assassination of Lincoln that was so graphic that it gave me nightmares. It was as powerful an image in the 1980s for me as it was when first introduced in 1865. Fast forward to a visit to Antiques World on the Gettysburg Pike outside of Harrisburg. There my mother bought me a Currier and Ives print of Jeremy Cross’ Masonic Chart. While I sold that piece years later, I would dearly love to come across another. It was my first C&I print. Mom also told me that my dad had owned many C&I prints, so I assumed the love for them came from nature as much as nurture. Over the years, I watched C&I prints rise and fall in price. The Tomb of Washington came home with me one day for $20, which I was very proud to have found. Over the years, however, I

Festivities will feature exciting new celebrations that include a spectacular outdoor 3D light show, Jazz and Wine nights, a Santa Tram, holiday crafts for kids, s’mores around the fire, holiday floral workshops, live ice sculpture carvings, and more. A new magical outdoor light show unlike any other will be one of the seasonal highlights. The Winterthur house serves as the backdrop for a du Pont family Christmas story told through 3D images, video, lights, and sounds in a unique holiday experience created by PaintScaping, a world leader in 3D projection mapping. The show will run every 15 minutes between 5:15 and 8:45 p.m. from Dec. 1 to 12. After the show, experience the “Home for the Holidaysâ€? tour of the beautifully decorated house. Displays include a Victorian tree of the kind young Harry and his sister Louise enjoyed in the 1890s, as well as the large tree he decorated for his own family in the 1930s. As always, the rooms will be enhanced with the floral displays that were so essential to du Pont’s decorating, and visitors will see trees inspired by the beauty of the Winterthur garden, including the magnificent Dried-Flower Tree majestically arrayed in the Conservatory amid abundant blooming plants. New this year, enjoy wandering outdoors from the greenhouses to Oak Hill to discover exquisite exterior dĂŠcor designed by Winterthur’s horticulturists and floral designers, including a cascade of holiday splendor that enhances the water features of the Glade Garden and whimsical delights in Enchanted Woods. Special events and programs include a ride on the

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Nov. 12, 13, and 14 Premier Americana Auction was a landmark event and produced robust prices, along with a few surprises, in multiple categories. The three-day format consisted of 1,908 lots from across the country, much of which was fresh to the market and, in a number of cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. Bidding was intense throughout each day, with thousands of registered bidders participating by phone and online in competition with a socially distanced gallery crowd. Session one featured a wide selection of 18th and 19th century glass and lighting, comprising free-blown, pattern-molded, and pillarmolded wares; bottles and flasks; a fine collection of colored pressed flint glass including many rare vases and candlesticks; whale oil and fluid lamps; early kerosene lighting, including cut overlays; a large selection of

Hennage, 1990-290. popularity within a decade or two, the overall case form continued to be produced in England and America for much longer. This clock is part of a recent bequest to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation by longtime supporters and premiere American decorative arts collectors Joseph H. and June S. Hennage. Another tall case clock featured in the exhibition was made by William Claggett, a London-born clockmaker who immigrated first to Boston and then to Newport, R.I., between 1714 and 1716. He produced both square and arched dial clocks during his 30-year career in Newport. While this example was made ca. 1740, its case was made ca. 1765, suggesting that the owner later upgraded the case to reflect newer fashions. The clock’s arched dial provided space for specialized features in addition to the basic time and date. The small chapter ring in the arch includes the time of high tides in Roman numerals and the lunar calendar in Arabic numerals. The moon face within that ring revolves to represent the phases of the moon. Knowing the time of high tide and, therefore, when ships might sail was important to the people of a major seaport such as Newport. With the arrival of arched dials such as this example, mid18th-century cases evolved to include arched tops. Concave and convex carved shells, like those on this clock case, also decorate many pieces of Rhode Island furniture produced during the mid- to late18th century. Southern tall case clocks reflected a variety of regional and international influences. One of the clocks to be seen in Keeping Time is from Virginia’s Shenandoah County. It was made in 1800 and

(gears) for the movement, engraved or painted decoration on the dial, or produced decorative inlaid wooden elements or painted ornament on the clock cases. The style and design of both the clock movements and cases changed over time with innovations, evolving fashions, and regional preferences. Organized in sections on clock movements, dials, Southern tall case clocks, plain vs. fancy design and table clocks, “Keeping Time: Tall Case Clocks” offers an encyclopedic survey on the topic. “Much like today’s watches and clocks, 18th- and 19thcentury tall case clocks, including those highlighted in this exhibition, followed national and regional trends in fashionable style and design,” said Colonial Williamsburg’s curator of furniture, Tara Chicirda. “These clocks were also customized with specialized mechanical features. Akin to the apps on today’s smart watches and cell phones, tall case clocks often incorporated extra applications, including those to tell the time of local high tides, the phases of the moon, or day of the month. Some allowed the owner to silence or mute the chime. Clocks with examples of each of these mechanisms will be shown in ‘Keeping Time.’” Among the highlights of “Keeping Time” is a tall case clock by clockmaker Thomas Planner of London, ca. 1700. The case is veneered with a small-scale foliate marquetry, known by some in the period as filigree. At the end of the 17th century, European cabinetmakers often used veneers of different colored wood to create fashionable scrollwork floral marquetry patterns like this English example inspired by Italian design. The square brass dial, the stepped (or “sarcophagus” shaped) hood and the filigree marquetry of this clock case were considered the height of fashion in London at the time. Although it is common today for most people to own a personal timepiece, in centuries past it was not so. Marking time to the exact minute was a new innovation during the late 17th century, and the development of the tall case clock helped to make that possible. Until the early 19th century, only the wealthy could afford these expensive timepieces. Average people had little need for the precision these devices provided, relying instead on the location of the sun in the sky, sundials or public clocks to know the hour. As society became more dependent on time regulation, clocks became more necessary, and innovations made them more attainable. How these timepieces evolved, were made and used will be explored in “Keeping Time: Tall Case Clocks,” a new exhibition of more than 20 tall case clocks from different regions spanning more than a century of timekeeping. The exhibit opened on Nov. 14 in the Iris and Mark Coblitz Gallery at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the newly expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, and will remain on view through Dec. 31, 2022. “Colonial Williamsburg is unique in the nation in collecting, studying and exhibiting decorative arts from all parts of early America,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle Humelsine chief curator and vice president for museums, preservation and historic resources. “This exhibition will feature clocks from New England, the Middle Atlantic and the American South, as well as examples from England.” Tall case clocks are weight-driven movements regulated by pendulums and housed in tall wooden cases. They were the products of two distinct trades: the clockmaker who put together the mechanical movement and the cabinetmaker (or joiner) who made the wooden case. Tall Case Clocks Continued from page 8
rosettes and animal figures, such as the leaping stag and the bird, are common motifs on German-American fraktur (illuminated manuscripts), pottery and painted furniture from Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. The construction of the clock with its numerous wooden pegs suggests it likely was also made by a craftsman of Germanic extraction in the Valley. Spitler painted the date “1800 and his initials, “J.Sp, on the clock’s trunk door along with “No 2, likely noting this as the second clock that he painted. Not all tall case clocks were elaborate, but even plain
styles could be handsome, as exemplified by a clock that will be on view at the Art Museums for the first time. Made between 1819 and 1829 by Elijah Warner of Lexington, Ky., the clock case relies for its design success on figured cherry and mahogany and a well-proportioned form rather than more costly inlaid or carved elements. This streamlined, classical appearance became popular in coastal American cities during the 1820s and spread west with the movement of goods and people. While this clock case is relatively plain, the dial, made by entrepreneur clockmaker Luman Watson of Cincinnati, Ohio, is quite ornate with its neoclassical urn, flowers and delicate gilt filigree. Watson’s name appears on the dial, but other artisans, including an unidentified clockmaker with the initials “I.S. and likely a specialist dial painter, crafted the mechanism. “Keeping Time: Tall Case Clocks is generously funded by Mark and Iris Coblitz.
