Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques To Host The Art Of Antique And Artisan Show On Oct. 1 And 2 Mechanical Ninth Annual Event Will Take Place At Lebanon Valley Expo Center The “open air” ninth annual Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques Antique and Artisan Show will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1 and 2, at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center complex,80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, Pa. Show hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for day one and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. day two. Gas up the truck, get some seasonal garb, fluff up a fancy hat and stroll among the best pickers to come together at one unique antique and artisan event. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, attendees are asked to wear a touch of pink. Many vendors will be selling pink items, with proceeds going to Wellspan Sechler Family Cancer Center in Lebanon, Pa. This fall show is hosted by the owners of Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques, Diane Gibble and Troy Tranquillo. The two started the show 15 years ago in the backyard of their shop in Bethel, Pa., with just a few tents full of great vendors and eager shoppers who came dressed in witch hats and costumes to celebrate the fall event. Each year, the show grew bigger and better, and with that came bigger and better venues. This will be the third year that they have brought their show to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center. Vendors will be provided with larger booths to allow more room for social distancing and, when possible, empty spaces will be provided between vendors to allow dealers and guests more room. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front entrance and other points throughout the show. All facility overhead doors (and there are many) will be open to transform the facility into an “open air event,” so please dress accordingly. The show will go on rain or shine. What makes this fall antique and artisan show so successful? Well, it’s the talented vendors, of course. And this year’s line-up of quality vendors will not disappoint. The slogan, “Bring a truck,” isn’t a joke. Shoppers will need one to haul off their goods. The show will once again welcome Jill Peterson. She is the owner of Frontera Roots, where she showcases her personal line of organic clothing and jewelry. Shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase her creative wares. To learn more, visit wwwFronteraRoots.com. It all started with some rag balls, and now Alechia’s House of Country has grown into several successful businesses. Alechia’s House will make a welcome return to the show. Her business in Northeastern

Mechanical banks were invented in the middle of the 19th century to encourage children to save money. When many hear the word “mechanical,” they think of an engine of some sort, but these banks have no engines. Instead, they rely on gravity or someone using a handle or lever to make them move. Many mechanical banks depicted someone or something historical and were usually made of castiron. They were handpainted in one of several factories and were sold for mere pennies. The rarest banks in good condition can fetch hundreds of thousands at auctions. The highest priced banks have Continued on page 4

Primitives, and Cabin in the Woods. Many well-known talented artisans will be on-site, including Bobbi’s Addictive Accessories, Krisnick, Wooly Rugger, Shelly Broughton, The Mud Room, and others. Chatty Monks Brewing Company of Reading, Pa., named a Top 50 Brew Pub Nationwide and Top 10 in the Northeast, will be on-site, offering a variety of seasonal brews. There are many dealers who bring traditional antiques to the show as well. No event is complete without great food, and there will be a variety of delicious foods to choose from, including the in-house food vendor, Roberts, a native of Lebanon County. Top it all off with a Harrisburg Farm Show Milkshake made by ELCO Future Farmers of America (FFA). Back by popular demand are two talented ladies promoting two well-known paint companies and providing DIY painting demos. This year they will offer hands-on workshops. Be sure to stop by and work beside two of the best painting instructors in the region. Collector Chats with Peter S. Seibert This Week: Shipwreck Finds

By Peter Seibert A few weeks ago, I was running through some offerings from an online antique seller and came across a selection of wares from the famed Nanking cargo. The ceramics all had little labels on the bottom from the landmark Christie’s sale back in 1982. The collection that was sold was a true time capsule of Asian export wares produced for the western market. They were made prior to the 1752 sinking of the ship Geldermalsen when the cargo was lost. I remember when that sale was held and thinking how really wonderful it would be to own something from the wreck. Prices were high, and even though there were many big dealer lots, I never saw any of the items reoffered until now. What surprised me now is how reasonable many of the pieces were. Granted, the market has changed a lot in the subsequent decades when it comes to interest in ceramics; however, I was truly surprised to see not only on this dealer’s

website but others how much material was currently available. Interestingly as well, I noted that the prices from U.K. dealers were generally double or triple those for similar items in the U.S. or Canada. My guess is that collecting ceramics of this type has a greater following in the U.K. than in the United States. After digging around to remember the details of the Nanking sale, I started to find references to a host of other shipwrecks yielding Asian export ceramics. This included the Tek Sing, which sank in 1822, with more than 350,000 ceramic vessels recovered. And the Hoi An Hoard that contained one of the largest collections of 15th-century Vietnamese ceramics ever found anywhere. In both of these cases, museums were given quantities of items for permanent exhibition with the remainder being offered at auction. I find the shipwreck cargoes fascinating not only because of their obvious novelty factor but because they are a snapshot of a particular moment in ceramic history. To see the range of the materials brought up reveals what the tastes were of the period. I noted in some subsequent descriptions of the wreck cargoes that writers talked about the poor quality and generic ceramics that made up the bulk of the cargo. Hello! That is exactly what makes these cargoes so fascinating as they reveal what people actually used rather than the cabinet

pieces that have come down to the present day. It is a true window into the world of what people used in a very narrow time slot. Collecting ceramics remains in my mind one of the still undervalued areas in the antiques world. I remember in the heady days of the 1980s and ’90s when outrageous prices were paid for the most basic of items. Today, while the best always brings the best prices, the overall pricing remains down. Certainly, this is true when looking at both the availability and pricing for the shipwreck cargoes. I have seen very high prices being sought for truly major examples of shipwreck china, but I also have seen incredibly reasonable pricing out there for lesser examples. While we are all taught to push our limits on what we can afford, I would argue that an assembled tea set from shipwreck cargoes, which can be done very reasonably, would be a great investment for the future. So dig around and take a look at these really cool treasures.

The bank featured in one of the photos shows a sitting man who depicts William “Boss” Tweed, the politician who ran Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine of 19th century New York city and state. He was eventually put in prison for graft and corruption, along with others. The weight of the coin makes Tweed’s arm lower and deposits the penny into a slot. Another example of a mechanical bank is the H.L. Judd company dog on a turntable, featured in the second photo. Place the coin in the dog’s mouth and turn the crank, and watch the dog march into the house to deposit the penny. This bank is from the late 1800s. For those lucky enough to find a version of the Boss Tweed bank in good condition and with the intact original white and orange paint, it could be a treasure worth thousands. Madison Bouckville Continued from page 1

Week, in these two small villages of Central New York, gathered on Aug. 16, about 1,500 exhibiting dealers setting out their collections on a score of fields and front yards awaiting the many thousands of shoppers for the official dates of the show, Tuesday through Sunday, Aug. 17 to 22. Weather on Monday was balmy and bright, so shoppers knowing there was no admission on any field arrived in droves. Sales began that afternoon while the exhibitors were trying to unload and set up their areas. Selling was so hectic shoppers were taking pieces off the trucks, trailers and vans to buy. One gentleman was looking at several 19th century quilts at the Out Front Show Field. As he put one down, another shopper picked it up wanting to buy it. The first fellow then had to commit to buying it on the spot while holding another piece for consideration. He bought the second one as well. Shopping and selling continued at a good pace all week in spite of daily rain. “The rain didn’t deter customers at all throughout the week. The only problem was keeping the parking areas navigable because many of them turned to mud. To cope with that we had to truck in gravel in the low places, but even so we had great crowds, and many dealers said sales were terrific,” said Jim Dutcher. Bob and Cheri Charboneau, Honeoye Falls, N.Y., were having a very good time at Cider House all week.

On that Monday while setting up their space, Bob was doing the heavy lifting while Cheri sold numerous pieces, he said. Their offerings included 19thcentury furniture from New York state and quilts. D’s and Do’s Antiques, Weedsport, N.Y., was also selling well, including several early tall cupboards as well as later furniture. Possibly a J. W. Fiske weathervane from the Hudson Valley was offered by Westerlo, N.Y., dealers Susan and Dennis Francher. Madison Bouckville Week is considered by many shoppers as the place to find fresh antiques and collectibles. Bob Hassfeld, Ocean Port, N.J., had just that setup: simple, no frills tables loaded with his “finds,” including hundreds of antique tools, decoys, fishing tackle and more. From Chittenango, N.Y., Len Purdy brought two Whizzers, Schwinn bicycles from the late 1940s which were modified with the addition of small gasoline engines, making them into motor bikes. Oak and maple furniture is popular here, as much of it was built locally. Dan Almerinder of Rochester, N.Y.,

antiquesandauctionnews.net was selling his inventory, store architectural and engiwhich was for the most part neering plans. Today, they restored or refinished. Very often sell to art galleries, he large drawer cabinets in his said. booth were originally made to The variety at these fields

is vast. For example Tom and Dorine Nagy, Chelsea Hill Antiques of Hampton, Conn., used a large tent with portable walls. Their exhibit at the Out Front Show Field was filled with furniture from as far back as Tudor and forward to Georgian and Victorian eras, and fine art as well. East Expo, another of the fields, has tents filled with early American country antiques. Dan Freeburg was selling furniture and accessories found near his Wilcox, Pa. home. He sold a large blue milk painted stepback hutch, ca. 1800, a mustard painted dry sink, a mustardcolored bucket bench, along

with some of his stoneware and redware. Bill and Kay Puchstein were exhibiting in a double space at East Expo. Kay reported great sales with furniture, including a hired man’s bed, a lazy susan table, baskets, stoneware, textiles including quilts, and some novelties. Next year will be celebrated as the 50th anniversary of this event with special promotions. Information is available at www.MadisonBouckville.com.
