Casino Opponents Rally In Mineola Statement: Majority Must Stop Undermining Independence of County’s Inspector General

“A casino would bring problems, not solutions,” said Washington. “Problems that expose this diverse suburban community to addiction, sex trafficking, traffic congestion, crime, environmental discrimination and economic harm to local businesses.”

The bid to turn the Nassau HUB into a casino and entertainment complex has met with mixed reactions from local residents and businesses so far this year.

The Legislative Majority is refusing to re-appoint Nassau County Inspector General Jodi Franzese until 2024 at the earliest – inaction that will keep the fate of the office in flux for at least another nine months.

In response to this development, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) issued the following statement:

“With Nassau County’s disturbing history of corruption, it is unfathomable that anyone would think it is wise to undermine the Inspector General’s office, which was created for the sole purpose of preventing future scandals,” Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D –Freeport) said. “The Minority Caucus is not willing to accept the risk of a return to the waste, fraud, and abuse of the past. It is time to end the gamesmanship, reappoint the Inspector General, and fully commit to the independence of Nassau County’s public integrity watchdog.”
