Amsterdam Files For Bankruptcy, Seeks IDA Assistance

New Program Encourages Shopping Local

ort Washington was recently added to Discover Long Island’s Downtown Deals Mobile Travel Pass. This promotional program was created by Discover Long Island in partnership with the Nassau Industrial Development Agency (IDA) to offer travelers itinerary suggestions and exclusive discounts in an effort to help support local businesses.

Discover Long Island is an organization whose goal is to “further a destination’s thriving visitor economy.

The organization ensures Long Island’s coveted quality of life, thriving industries and dynamic destination offerings are promoted on a global level, furthering economic development and spurring visitation to this world-class destination.”

“The $6.3 billion hospitality industry has been the hardest hit industry in our region as a result of COVID-19 and the recovery of this industry is paramount to our small businesses and maintaining our quality of life,” Kristen Reynolds, President & CEO of Discover Long Island, said in a press release. “We are grateful to the Nassau IDA for their continued support of the mobile Downtown Deals Travel Pass and encourage residents and visitors to utilize this digitized platform to explore the charming downtown of Port Washington, along with all of the other vibrant downtowns that are the fabric of our community.”

The passport is only available for certain areas on Long Island and is free for all users. It provides more than 100 local businesses, so that residents or travelers can easily see what’s available in the area. To date, the passport is available for the following areas including Bay Shore, Farmingdale, Great Neck, Greenport, Huntington, Patchogue, Rockville Center and most recently Port Washington.

Sign-up for a Downtown Deals Travel Pass by visiting www.discoverlongisland.com/deals. A link is sent, which opens the passport and directs the user to add the button icon to their home screen. Once the user is ready to redeem their discount, they simply show their phone at the ticketing or checkout counter to access their deal.

Baxter Estates Mayor Elected First VP Of Nassau County Village Officials Association

t its June 24 annual meeting, the Nassau County Village Officials Association (NCVOA) elected Nora Haagenson, mayor of the Village of Baxter Estates, first vice president for 2021-22. The NCVOA represents 64 incorporated villages with more than 450,000 residents.

As first vice president, Mayor Haagenson will play a vital role in

establishing NCVOA policies and directing the organization’s efforts on behalf of village residents throughout Nassau County.

Amsterdam Files For Bankruptcy Protection, Seeks IDA Assistance

Richard Kessel, chairman of the NCIDA stated his concerns regarding the potential for a third bankruptcy in the future.

“We all recognize the need to keep this facility going to help the residents and employees—that’s a very critical thing,” Kessel said. “But this is a second bankruptcy for a company. There are some concerns that I have and that others have that in the end there will be a third bankruptcy going forward. I think it’s important that this board be provided with any analysis that was done that would show that this time things are going to work out—without those assurances, I cannot support this.”

Kessel asked Richard Dennett, an attorney from the Great Neck Plazabased Dennett Law Offices, PC, who spoke on behalf of the applicant, what other plans the nonprofit has in the event that the NCIDA does not approve the bonds.

“We did not look to another issuer of bonds,” Dennett said. “I don’t know if the plan survives in the event that there is no issuer of the bonds. We

“There has to be something that shows greater assurance that this is going to work,” Kessel said. “There ought to be a plan that we could see that would give us comfort that if we go forward and approve this that there is a likelihood of success.”

Thirty-three families are owed entrance-fee refunds in the amount of $20.3 million, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court filings stated. Kessel stated that those funds must be paid out in full as a condition of the bankruptcy case.

“I want some kind of assurance that all residents that are owed money are fully compensated for that as well,” Kessel said.

“All entrance-fee refund holders have to get paid in full, 100 percent, there is no negotiation on that,” Brooke Navarre, executive director of the Amsterdam at Harborside said in response. “We don’t want to be back here [because of a future bankruptcy].

It takes a toll on the community, and it takes a toll on our reputation. It’s not something we wanted to do.”

Navarre stated that The Amsterdam has created a “long-term plan that takes into consideration every variable,” and hopes to be able to share that information with the NCIDA board.

Kessel stated that the board needs to see a long-term plan before they move forward. The IDA Board unanimously voted to continue the discussion to a later meeting.

The NCIDA will hold their next meeting on July 22, at 6:30 p.m.

Crafting “Blankets Of Love” In North Hempstead Project Independence group donates blankets to those in need

T

he North Hempstead Project Independence “Blankets of Love” group is hard at work making and donating blankets to those in need. “Blankets of Love” was created by Project Independence members as a social group which allows senior residents in the community to come together and work in a

collaborative manner on meaningful and rewarding projects.

“I am always touched by the generosity of our residents and their talent for creating these works of art,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “Each of these blankets are created with care and love. We are thankful to be able to make these donations which

will benefit so many outstanding organizations.”

Recently the group donated items to: AHRC Nassau, For the Love of Pete’s Pantry, Nassau University Medical Center and the Mary Brennan Inn’s shelters.

In the past year alone, they have created 80 handmade items including blankets, baby blankets and baby hats. These items were donated to the Family and Children’s Association, SCO Family of Services,

the Melville Hospice Inn, North Hempstead’s Veterans Donation Drive, the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and Bethany House.

“Blankets of Love” currently meets on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. at Clinton G. Martin Park and is also available for virtual meetings via Zoom. For more information on the program, call 516-869-6311.

The Closing Of One Chapter Marks The Beginning Of A New One

Fifth grade students celebrate their moving up to middle school

O

n Monday, June 21, every corner of the Port Washington School District was filled to the brim with pride and celebration as fifth graders from Daly, Guggenheim, Sousa, Salem and Manorhaven elementary schools took the symbolic next steps that represented the end of their years in elementary school and the shift to middle school.

Teachers, staff and parents watched and cheered as students were praised for all their hard work this year and for all the years leading up to this milestone occasion.

“Our fifth graders have shown tremendous resilience in the face of such uncertain times and I, like the rest of the district and community, am continuously in awe of them,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Hynes, said. “Congratulations to all of our fifth graders on this moment in your lives. We wish you continued success as you begin this new chapter of your academic career.”

Each of the five elementary schools

hosted two or three outdoor moving up ceremonies to safely convene and celebrate the achievements of Port Washington’s fifth graders. Each school created a festive outdoor ceremony which included balloons in the respective school’s colors and banners that highlighted each school. Parents sat and enjoyed the day’s events as principals and other administrators spoke of their students’ accomplishments and the bright future that lay ahead for each of them. At the culmination of each ceremony, students received their moving up diplomas, a physical representation of their years of hard work and the continued dedication to their studies. This technicolor celebration is one that won’t soon be forgotten.

Port Resident Reappointed To Girl Scouts Of Nassau County’s Board Of Directors

irl Scouts of Nassau County recently elected its Board of Directors Officers, Board of Directors Members-at-Large and Board Development Committee for the 2021-23 term during its 56th Annual Meeting. Board Members include Lauren Summa, who was elected to serve as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Directors. The new board consists of life-long Girl Scouts, community leaders, nonprofit and corporative executives and many other board veterans. In her role, Summa will continue to serve the mission to provide leadership, innovation and constant support to the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Council.

“We are very grateful to have many of our past Board of Directors join us for another term and welcome aboard several new members who we believe will make wonderful additions,” Randell M. Bynum, CEO of Girl Scouts of Nassau County said. “This

outstanding group of professionals will be invaluable to our organization, as we continue to improve the lives of Girl Scouts in Nassau County.”

Summa is serving her second term as a member-at-large of the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. She was raised in Pittsburgh, PA, where she participated in Girl Scouts at a young age in a troop led by her mother. By Losing Her Life, She Saved Others Natalie Ciappa’s death leads to anti-opioid initiative, awareness

or Victor Ciappa of Massapequa and his wife Doreen, the death of their daughter Natalie at age 18 is always present.

Before Ciappa stepped up to the microphone at a June 22 press conference to announce a renewed push for Operation Natalia, the county’s anti-opioid initiative, County Executive Laura Curran had said, “Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of the overdose death of Natalie Ciappa. And I was speaking with Mr. Ciappa before and he said it always feels like it was yesterday.”

Regarding Natalie’s death in a Seaford garage turned party room on June 21, 2008, Ciappa said, “It could have been prevented—if we knew the signs. If we were aware that heroin was in Massapequa and all the Nassau and Suffolk towns.

Now we know. And I’d like to speak directly to the parents who have the perfect child.

Natalie was a perfect child.

You have to open your eyes, swallow hard. Get into their business. Look at their friends.

Look at their cell phone. Be invasive to save your kid’s life.

It’s that important.”

He added, “Thank God for Operation Natalie because we didn’t have this weapon then— and that’s why we lost her.”

With a nod to the police brass and officers assembled behind him, he said, “These guys are my heroes.”

Speaking directly to parents he asserted, ”You people have got to do the right things— you’re parents, not friends, of your children. God Bless you.”

Soon after their daughter’s death from a heroin overdose, the Ciappas began a personal odyssey to inform parents about the resurgent scourge of heroin. Once a drug associated with inner-cities and tortured artists and musicians, it had become easily available in the suburbs and found a whole new slew of consumers.

Operation Natalie was started in 2018, replacing an earlier program called Natalie’s Law, which was passed by both Nassau and Suffolk legislatures to create a website to map heroin possession and sales arrests.

Parents could then see where the “hot spots” were in their communities.

Under Operation Natalie, according to a press release, the county aims “to decrease both fatal and non-fatal overdoses and to provide pathways to recovery.” It will focus on providing targeted communities in “hot spots” with enforcement, treatment information and education, then returning two months later to provide information on the campaign. Among communities identified as places where opioid use/ sales are a concern include Farmingdale, East Meadow, Hicksville, Levittown and Massapequa.

Cops would do follow-up visits to homes where people

had overdosed and survived, offering additional help.

Dismal Numbers

Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder acknowledged Ciappa, stating, “Vic and I speak quite often. It’s tough on a parent and community when we lose somebody that young, so innocent, to this horrific drug called heroin.

And now with Fentanyl inside of it.”

The pandemic, the commissioner affirmed, had disrupted the successful campaign.

“We were winning the battle, We were reducing the numbers in ’17, ’18 and ’19. And then we got hit with COVID and we lost our way.

The numbers drove right up,” Ryder noted.

He added, “But we’re bringing that fight back. Our education, awareness, diversion, treatment and again the aftercare. Education and awareness. It went out. We couldn’t get to the communities, we couldn’t get to the schools. We’re bringing it back. Our enforcement side of it had slowed down, because again, our interaction with the public about

going out there aggressively and attacking in the war on heroin—that’s slowed down.”

Regarding the numbers, he said, “In 2017, we hit a high. 334 non-fatal and 50 fatal overdoses. We started Operation Natalie in March 2018, our numbers at the end of 2019 were 217 non-fatal and 44 fatal overdoses. That’s a 21 percent decrease from 2017 and a 15 percent decrease in the fatal from 2017.

As of today, in 2021, already my six-month non-fatal are closing in on the six-month from 2017. I’m at 281 non-fatal and 76 fatal overdoses.”

The highest figures come from the cohort between ages 21 and 30.

“Those are the people that are out of work, don’t have jobs to go to. Not going to school. Staying at home.

Getting into that depression again. So we’re going to be out there again reaching to family members,” Ryder said.

As far as enforcement, the commissioner stated, “In 2017 we made 766 heroin arrests.

In 2020, 294. The enforcement dropped, again because of COVID. The overdoses went up, so the product was still on the street.”

Similarly, Narcan applications, which revive victims of overdoses, went from 746 in 2017 to 300 so far this year.

The calls for Narcan should increase with overdoses spikes, he noted, but “we’re not getting the calls.”

Ryder also observed that the department’s “Too Good

for Drugs” program, given in 48 of 56 school districts, was also cut back significantly thanks to COVID, as many schools were closed to in-person learning or did not allow outside visitors.

Curran announced that each precinct would add a problem-oriented policing (POP) officer, bringing the total to four.

According to Ryder, “The POP cops are out there working with the community, working with our narcotics guys, and trying to get the message out there and educate the public.”

The press conference also featured a demonstration starring “Moose,” a K-9 with handler Robert Cohen, who sniffed out a container of cocaine.

“As you know, marijuana has been legalized in the state of New York,” Ryder said. “That’s a problem for us—our dogs were trained to sniff marijuana. Now our dogs are working on sniffing just cocaine and heroin.”

“I’m grateful for the work of this wonderful police department and our district attorney’s office and all of our treatment providers and [others], who are in this fight together,” Curran said. “To make sure we are saving our young people, saving anyone who has fallen into the clutches through no fault of their own. We all have family who have been affected by this. Loved ones who have been affected by this. But this doesn’t mean we are going to accept it. We’re going to do everything we can to save more people.”

She added, “I want to thank Mr. Ciappa for being here today. I know it’s not easy to talk about this. But he has taken his experience and with a lot of courage and bravery has—I have no doubt—saved lives. So I want to thank him for that.”

Celebrating The Survivors Holocaust survivors gather for refreshments, dancing and conversation

ivia Horovitz was only six years old when she was a prisoner of Auschwitz concentration camp and had lost 28 people in her family.

“Only my parents came back and my mother’s two sisters,” Horovitz said. “I miss my family so much. I don’t remember their faces, but I remember they were still alive for sure. My grandmother was tall and skinny and I miss her so much. I saw her every week.”

Horovitz said she could never forget what she went through, layered by the fact that she had to escape from her home country, Hungary, during the revolution against Soviet-imposed policies in 1956.

“I left everything in Hungary,” Horovitz said. “My father left the house, the business and everything because after we had the concentration camps, the Russians came in and they took everything. For 10 years they were there. I was free, but not free.”

“It’s not easy, my life,” Horovitz added.

Horovitz moved to the United States in 1957 after escaping to Austria.

“I have aunts here so we could come right away,” Horovitz said. “I did not have to wait too much in Austria because my aunt sent the affidavit for us. I married in Austria. That was a funny thing because they said you could not go if you’re engaged. So we got married.”

Decades later, Horovitz would find herself at the Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview on June 24 with approximately 50 other survivors and their families for the first annual event to commemorate Holocaust Survivors Day, a day to remember and celebrate survivors world-wide.

“I’m so happy to be here because it’s been a long time since we could all get together,” Horovitz of North Bellmore said. “It’s so nice to see the people.”

Holocaust Survivor Day was founded in honor of

Auschwitz survivor Marian Turski, a noted historian and journalist. Because his birthday, June 26, falls on Shabbat, Holocaust Survivor Day was observed on June 24. The day was intended to be a time of joy and celebration for Holocaust survivors rather than a day for condemnation of the Nazis.

“We wanted to get them together to enjoy each other’s company, not to bring them together and have to have them sit and talk about the past all the time,” Rick Lewis, the chief executive officer at MidIsland Y JCC and Suffolk Y JCC, said. “We wanted to bring them together to talk about each other, their success. A lot of times people don’t ask them what they did today, how many children they have, how many grandchildren, what they do for a living.”

And talk the survivors did, over a pretzel and hummus appetizer, ice cream provided by Mister Softee and coffees and pastries. Teenagers volunteered as the waiters and waitresses that day, including Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School student Jordan Riccuiti.

“I feel that it’s really important to hold events like

these,” Riccuiti said. “It’s important that we learn about [the Holocaust] and respect these people who have been through such hard things in the past... It’s just so nice to see them be together. I heard people talking about good times together and building friendships, it’s just the greatest thing to see.”

Not only did the survivors talk, they danced.

Once the music started playing, Mid Island Y JCC staff got the party started by bringing survivors up to dance with them. Among those dancing, laughing and enjoying the Thursday afternoon was Susan Konstantyn.

“It’s a great occasion,” said Konstantyn, who is married to Alex Konstantyn, a survivor from Poland.

“He went through a lot, so it’s a wonderful thing to have survivors join together in celebration.”

Getting together in person is much better than being on the phone or over Zoom, she added.

Sarah Grace Foundation Raises $4,800 In Virtual 5K 3.1-mile run honors organization namesake who would have been 31

he Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. recently hosted its first ever virtual 5K race this spring, raising $4,800 to continue providing important programs and services for children and families affected by pediatric cancer. Given the fact the goal of the Hicksville-based nonprofit organization is to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and provide comfort and support to families of children suffering from cancer, achieving this mission statement became that much more challenging in the midst of a pandemic.

“With what happened with COVID-19 in the past year, we’ve had to get pretty creative with our fundraising,” Foundation President Matthew Weippert said. “We’ve had to go virtual with many of our fundraisers and regroup.”

The “Hugs for Sarah 2021 Virtual 5K” drew nearly 100 participants from all across the country showing their support. Locally, 20 participants came from the robotics team at Hicksville High School all walked the event together. All racers were encouraged to share photos from their own virtual 5k on social media with the hashtag #HugsForSarah5k and everyone received a personalized race bib and finishers medal.

“This certainly shows that in the almost 19 years we have been spreading Sarah’s story and supporting these wonderful children, word has traveled across the country about the good works being done in Sarah’s name,” Weippert said.

Matthew and Marissa Weippert lost their then 12-year-old daughter to ninemonth battle with Acute Lympoblastic Leukemia in November 2002. Out of the ashes of that tremendous loss came the Sarah Grace Foundation For

Children With Cancer. The significance of the Hugs for Sarah 2021 Virtual 5K race is that the distance equates to 3.1 miles and this year the organization’s namesake would have turned 31 years old on March 31. All proceeds from the race will support the programs and activities of this all-volunteer organization. Core programs include The Escape Hatch, Gabe’s Chemo Duck, The Bead Program, Sarah Grace’s Book Angels and holiday toy distributions.

The Foundation also provides financial aid for families, including meals, transportation, household expenses and funeral expenses. The foundation raises roughly $50,000 annually and is constantly stretching out these funds to directly help between 100 to 125 families every year. And that doesn’t factor in the hundreds of toys and Halloweenrelated goodie bags sent out to all the area hospitals on Long Island and in New York City. Weippert was pleased with how this first-time event went.

“We’re thrilled with how successful the event was and with how much fun people had sharing their photos online,” Weippert said. “The results have inspired us to hopefully continue events like these as we continue our mission to support children with cancer.”

t approximately 7:10 p.m. on June 25, the Wantagh FD received a call for a jet ski accident, with two people in the water at Seaman’s Creek in the vicinity of the first bridge on the Wantagh Parkway. Rescues 3 and 5, Marine One and the dive team responded. Third Assistant Chief Bill Stevens was first to arrive at the area of the first bridge and civilians in the area alerted him to the area east of the Wantagh Parkway. Chief Stevens reported that the person on the jet ski was already removed from the water and was being transported to the Wantagh Park Boat Ramp by a private vessel. Chief of Department Ken Kelly redirected to Wantagh Park and ordered Rescue 5 to respond to the Park and Rescue 3 and Marine One to continue their response to the location of the accident as there was still the possibility of one person in the water. As units were responding to both locations, Chief Stevens determined there was only one victim, a 28-year-old female, and Chief Kelly directed all units to Wantagh Park.

Additional units on the scene included Rescue 1 and Ladder 1, the United States Coast Guard, Nassau County Police Marine Unit and Town of Hempstead Bay Constable. All Marine Units conducted a coordinated search of the water until it was confirmed there was only one victim.

A helicopter from the Nassau County Police Department was requested to expedite transfer to the hospital. As the helicopter was responding, the patient was stabilized and removed from the boat.

Police personnel at the scene assisted by securing a landing zone adjacent to the boat ramp and the patient was transferred to the helicopter and transported to Nassau University Medical Center.

All units were secure in 30 minutes and there were no injuries reported.

The Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary school students recently celebrated Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American Flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this patriotic symbol.

At each of the schools, students wore patriotic colors and attire decorated with flags. The students also congregated outside to sing patriotic songs and to take time to honor the American flag. Local Student Takes His Best Shot To Help Others We Invite You to Auction!

ared Ohebshalom describes his Smile Shot challenge as “like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but a step further”.

Ohebshalom is a 17-year-old varsity athlete with a dream to one day become a dentist. As a student at Great Neck North High School, when Ohebshalom isn’t playing basketball, soccer, or lacrosse, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Throughout Ohebshalom’s time playing sports, he noticed something, “Whenever you hit a shot in any sport…you smile after.” Smiling is a universal expression that connects everyone, no matter their differences.

Some of the most genuine smiles come after accomplishing something great, like hitting a game-winning three-pointer in basketball. Millions of children and adults across the world, however, are unable to show such joy.

For those suffering with a cleft palate, smiling may feel impossible. Many people born with cleft palates struggle with bullying and social isolation due to their appearance, and many newborns with this condition do not survive or are abandoned.

Ohebshalom first heard of Operation Smile through his parents. Operation Smile is a nonprofit organization that partners with local health care providers in more than 30 impoverished countries in order to provide free surgical treatment to people with cleft palates. Many of these people are not able to afford or otherwise are unable to get the care they need. Operation Smile also provides continued care to their patients after the procedure, including dental work and speech therapy. What really impacted Ohebshalom and caused him to want to help were stories of children in developing countries who were abandoned by their parents due to their condition.

“Through Operation Smile you’re changing a kid’s life,” Ohebshalom said.

These surgeries give children the chance to live a normal, happy life again. After hearing of this, Ohebshalom looked for a way to bring his love for sports and his desire to help children born with cleft palates together, and came up with what he called the Smile Shot Challenge.

“It’s very simple,” Ohebshalom said.

“All you have to do is go out, take your best shot and nominate three of your friends.”

which one of his friends spent almost an hour and a half trying to record the perfect shot for his challenge.

“We wanted to make it special,” he explained. “You don’t have to be the best. You just have to have the desire to help someone out, which I believe a lot of people in this world have, especially on Long Island”.

Ohebshalom has personally done the challenge, as well as his coach and many of his friends. Now, Ohebshalom is hoping that the challenge will spread throughout Long Island and beyond.

Ohebshalom called on his friends, family and community members to participate in the challenge, encouraging them to post their best shot and their smile afterward to his Instagram page, which currently has approximately 30 posts. He says his goal is to get kids and parents involved to spread the challenge and drum up more support for Operation Smile.

On his Instagram page, @smileshot_ challenge, Ohebshalom has shared the link for a GoFundMe campaign he created to raise money for Operation Smile. So far, the campaign has raised almost $600 and Ohebshalom hopes that the number will continue to grow.

“It’s actually saving lives,” Ohebshalom said about the donations.

“It doesn’t have to be a huge contribution; every dollar counts.”

A child can receive the life changing surgery they need for as little as $250.

The Smile Shot Challenge provides a quick and fun way to spread awareness and raise money for children with cleft palates in impoverished countries.

June 23, 1898, marks pivotal time in Port’s history with debut of a new steam train line

There was a time in Port Washington’s illustrious history when horse drawn wagons outnumbered automobiles and the term “traffic lights” didn’t exist. The same time in our historical past when the early residents of Port Washington had no other choice to travel via stagecoach to NYC than to travel to nearby Great Neck to hop a train to Hunter’s Point in Long Island City and then ferry across the East River to the 34th St. Manhattan ferry terminal.

A

long, hard commute, indeed.

But in the year 1866, political feuds thwarted efforts to extend the Great Neck railway into Port and it wasn’t for another three decades in Port’s history that residents celebrated the inauguration of train service from Port Washington to Manhattan. That pivotal date in history—June 23, 1898, permanently transformed Port Washington’s reputation as a farming and fishing “village” into a thriving commuter suburb of NYC. On Wednesday, June 23, the present-day Long Island Railroad station on Main Street was the scene of a memorable tribute to the date in history that literally put Port Washington on the map and attracted thousands of new residents like flies to fly paper, eager to settle into new homes, raise families and seamlessly commute to NYC for their jobs.

Port’s Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society (CNPHS) proudly placed a commemorative plaque on the exterior wall of the train station, a permanent reminder of the most important date in Port’s history.

“I am proud to be here on this date when the first train arrived at our town in 1898,” Chris Bain, a Schreiber graduate and President of

the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society said to those who came to celebrate. Bain pointed out that the engineer who drove that first train into the village in 1898 was William H. Graven and introduced his grandson, Peter Gravson, who still lives in Port today.

“Our mission at the CNPHS is one of education, particularly about our shared local history and the ways in which people lived and worked over the centuries,” Bain said. “We encourage our residents to participate in our robust lecture series and historic walking tours. We also mount serious exhibitions at the Sands-Willets house every two years and just launched a brandnew walking tour of the Mill Pond Historic District.”

Henry Thomas Dodge made a surprise and delightful visit from the afterlife at the commemorative event, wowing all with his tales of that date on June 23, 1898, when he and his family was one of 1,400 residents of Port Washington.

“I was born here in Port Washington in 1850 in our family’s historic home on Harbor Rd, a home we lived in for many generations since 1721,” the proud landowner and original founding families of Port

Washington said. He stood proud that day, noting that the Dodge house and its outbuildings have been listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places since

1986. The home is also a designated landmark of the Town of North Hempstead’s Historic Landmark Preservation Commission.

Some anecdotal information from history: • The first LIRR train station in Point, in Long Island City. Travel to Port was built as a wood-framed and from Manhattan still required structure with wood siding. It was a ferry ride across the East River to remodeled with brick facing in the 34th street ferry dock. Looking for activities that are fun and safe this summer? Look no further than Port Washington with great outdoor activities and restaurants.

f you prefer water activities, you can fish or boat off North Hempstead Beach Park. Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding are among the other amenities offered. The park also offers recreational activities such as shuffleboard, basketball, volleyball, as well as other sport fields. You can even enjoy a nice picnic with the barbeques provided or take the kids to the playground. Permits are required for use of the fields and picnic areas and there is a daily park visit fee of $15

cash and $10 credit.

If you are looking to save some cash and want to experience a free but fun activity, you can hike through the Leeds Pond Preserve or the Manorhaven Preserve.

Both spots offer a great place to enjoy nature while getting in some much-needed exercise after being cooped up last summer from the pandemic. Leeds Pond Preserve looks over the Manhasset Bay and is home to the Science Museum of Long Island, which offers great

educational opportunities for children.

You are bound to find some great seafood places on the North Shore including Louie’s Grille and Liquors.

This place dates back to 1905 and has amazing cuisine such as lobster rolls and fish tacos, as well as a great cocktail menu which includes coconut mojitos and Louie’s Arnold Palmer.

Louie’s also provides great entertainment with live bands every week and a great view of Manhasset Bay with dock seating.

There are also some great vegetarian options in Port Washington like the hummus plates and falafel at Bosphorus Café Grille. This Turkish restaurant offers delicious

Mediterranean food, and you can enjoy it inside or outdoors.

Port Thai Place also has some yummy plates like the vegetarian pad woon-sen and the vegetarian tofu green curry fried rice.

Although Port Thai Place does not offer outdoor seating like Bosphorus Café Grille, it is located on Main Street which has an amazing outdoor festival every Thursday night in the summer.

So, if you decide to check out their vegetarian menu, definitely go on a Thursday to experience some great outdoor fun after your meal.

Growing Up In Port Washington: A Student’s Perspective

T

he unique and exceptional qualities that Port Washington offers its residents and visitors is a privilege that is sometimes easy to take for granted. It was on a recent walk along Main Street, after my last final exam, that my mind was finally free to focus on the fact that I would be a senior at Schreiber next year and most likely leaving Port Washington for college after that.

I began to reflect on my childhood memories and realized that Port Washington has played a large role in who I am and how I define myself. I am a proud Port resident and love so many of the facets of Port Washington life.

Port Washington’s physical beauty is unquestionable. Young families transitioning away from city life have flocked to our community for generations. As a real estate broker, my mom and her business partner say that a main attraction has been Port Washington’s beautiful landscape as well as the daily views of the Long Island Sound.

After 23 years closure, Andy's Pizza and Restaurant is open once again, to the thrill of the people of Port Washington. Three generations of the Bellini family have run the restaurant since it first opened in 1959 at 195 Manorhaven Blvd. in Port Washington. Proudly using the same recipe and quality ingredients, Andy's has customers coming from all over to get a taste.

ndy Bellini and Lori Bellini originally ran the restaurant from 1985-97. Now, Andy and his wife Nina Bellini own and run the restaurant with the help of Andy’s two daughters, Ashley and Alex. Since they recently opened back on May 10 of this year, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with old and new customers coming in. Some people even drive from the city just to grab an authentic slice from Andy.

Andy doesn’t cut corners with his ingredients. He uses whole milk cheese, which is sliced instead of shredded for that amazing pull-affect that everyone loves. Customers say that Andy’s homemade sauce tastes exactly like it

did 23 years ago. Andy tells them his running joke, “Yeah, I just took it out of the freezer for you.”

After Andy’s parents retired in 1997, Andy thought he would shut the place down for good, but said that he “got bored,” in a joking manner.

People will come in with stories about sharing a slice of Andy’s pizza on their first date, or tell the story about the night of Sept. 15, 1997, when the restaurant closed. A local of Port Washington, Jimmy Flemming said that he’s been a customer since 1959.

Andy’s Pizzeria treated him and others like family and would even invite him over on holidays.

What makes Andy’s Pizzeria different from most restaurants nowadays is this community feel. When you come in for a slice, you know Andy’s going to be making your pizza. Twentythree years ago, you could see the little Bellini sisters helping dad cook the pies, and now you will see Andy’s grandchildren in the cabinets.

There’s a face and a family to the name of the restaurant.

“The biggest takeaways about Dad is, cooking for people and being with family and if you can open a

restaurant and have both of those things, then he’s happy,” Ashley said.

What’s up next for Andy’s Pizzeria?

Once Andy gets his liquor license, he will start selling pitchers of beer for families and friends to enjoy alongside their pizza either inside or outdoors in “the yard” as locals call it.

“I think that’s what makes us unique,” Ashley said. “No other restaurant in town has that.”

Port Washington’s physical beauty is undeniable and enhances my life every day.

Port Washington also offers an amazing opportunity to learn about and interact with the local ecology. Whether exploring the trails of the Sands Point Preserve, fishing at the town dock or taking a walk on one of the many beaches, the opportunities to observe aviary and marine life are endless. Seeing the countless boats docked at the marinas as I drive by on my way to school each morning relaxes me. In the summer months, I can be found on a boat ride with my friends, paddle boarding or fishing at the town dock. Life by the water is always fun. Port’s close proximity to New York City means that town is filled with busy, fast-walking and talking New Yorkers but I believe that those of us who have chosen to make Port our home are also great at sitting back, relaxing and casting our reels. Sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?

Diversity is the quality that I personally love the most about Port Washington. This is what I think makes

Port the best place to live and grow up in. In this context, diversity means cultures, races, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds and political views.

Although we have all chosen to live here, our differences are what makes Port multidimensional. Living in Port Washington means attending school with students who are the same and different from each other at the same time. It means exposure to restaurants with flavors and fragrances from different ethnic backgrounds. It means learning about countless religions and their holidays. It means teaching others about my family’s traditions and history. It means hearing different languages spoken at the supermarkets. It means sports teams for some students, drama programs for others and math, science, history and auto-tech for others.

Everything goes in Port Washington, and everyone is welcome. I am proud of our heterogenous community and the differences that each and every community member brings to the table to make us one. Becoming More Inclusive Port School District offers new special education program

Come September, the Port Washington School District will begin implementing a new inclusion program to help students enrolled in the special education program integrate into the classroom with general education students.

“I

t’s a new program in the sense that we have the traditional continuum of services for a student with disabilities, we have resource room, we have our small classes, we have functional academic classes, but part of the regulation years ago allowed for this other model called inclusion or integrated teaching,” Dr. Stephanie Allen, Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services explained.

The idea behind this program is to have two teachers in the classroom, one general education teacher and one special education teacher.

Approximately one-third of the students in the classroom would be classified with IEP’s and the other two thirds would be comprised of general education students.

“The two teachers themselves

co-teach, co-plan and co-assess— they are really interchangeable so that they are able to meet the needs of all the students in the classroom,” Dr. Allen said. “It also helps us in the world of special education of keeping our students in the least restrictive environment, which is always what we want. We want to keep them as close to the general education population and accessing the general ed curriculum as much as possible.”

Dr. Allen stated that this program allows the special education students to remain in a typical classroom setting, rather than being pulled out of the classroom to receive individualized assistance, paving the way for more socialization, inclusion, diversity and acceptance.

district is working towards improving their vision and mission statement, with a focus on being more inclusive.

“Part of our new vision and mission is being more inclusive and making sure that things are more equitable for our students as far as opportunities,” Dr. Hynes said. “This is a major commitment—over two years it will cost close to a million dollars in order to make this happen. But this

is something we have been looking to do for the past two years. It allows us to focus on how we can bring back our students who are placed out of district, how we [can] create programs to bring them back to our school district and then to potentially focus on our students who are already here in self-contained classes—who are in

This inclusion model is already being implemented at the middle school and high school, but the district is looking to extend this model to their elementary school programs.

“This offers the opportunity for some students to stay in the classroom, instead of being pulled out so often,” Dr. Allen explained.

The process to implement this program throughout all the grades will take approximately two years as training plays a major part in implementing the program.

“We have not had inclusion at the elementary level in eight years,” Dr. Allen explained. “We had it in the past but it was dismantled for some reason. So we need time to train the teachers and we need time also to identify the students.

The target grades for next year are 2, 3 and 4. The second year would be K-1, and the five cohort would just move up from fourth grade.”

This will give the teachers ample opportunity to assess the students that are in pre-school, kindergarten and first grade to help determine

what their academic needs are before they are potentially placed into this inclusion program.

“This has been a long time coming, the federal funds that we have received have allowed us to put this on the front burner,” Dr. Hynes said. “We are spending a lot of our money to help kids and this is just one facet of it.”

Aside from the inclusion program, the district is also working on a number of key aspects for the upcoming school year. The district hired a new community liaison social worker for students and their families that need extra support.

“It is one of things I’ve heard many times since I’ve been here in two years,” Dr. Hynes said. “There’s a disconnect between families out in the community, all these wonderful agencies—but there is no centralization as far as if parents need assistance. There was no one person here to assist them and now we will have that.”

The district is also planning to focus on their English-Language Arts (ENL) students at Schreiber and how they can better assist them. The district is hiring a dedicated bilingual counselor who will be able to better support students

and their families.

Dr. Hynes stated that the district is also looking at how they can increase their graduation rate, which hovers between 93 and 95 percent.

“Our graduation rate is not where it should be,” Dr. Hynes admitted. “When you dig deeper into the data, some of our subgroups are not graduating—we are really targeting extra support there both internally and externally to make sure they do. There is no bigger sin in the world than a student not graduating from high school.”

The district also plans to increase the number of social workers at the middle school and ENL counselors to work with bilingual students and their families for the upcoming school year. Additionally, the district will be adding four more Academic Intervention Support (AIS) teachers to help assist students who are struggling as a result of the pandemic.

“With all of these supports coming in, if I was to predict in five years we will be close to 99 percent or 100 percent graduation rate,” Dr. Hynes said. “That is the absolute goal of my incredible team here and the Board of Education.”

oy Schneider is a Long Islander by birth. He was born in Freeport on the South Shore in 1964, but grew up in Ormond Beach, FL and Houston, TX. Schneider and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Port Washington in the spring of 1996. They have remained here ever since, along with the new addition of their Pomeranian Chihuahua mix, Fiona. Schneider is a masterful visual storyteller with thirty-four years’ experience as a video producer, director, editor and photographer.

Not averse to whimsy, Schneider was a senior editor at Sesame Street for four years and still speaks fondly of his Muppet friends. He received the Beacon Award for Community Service, the Beacon Award for Education, the Golden Cine Award and the Houston Press Music Award for “Best Music Video.” He has deservedly won ten Emmy Awards (and multiple more nominations). Also, a wine consultant and a darn good cook, Schneider believes that every picture tells a story and every story

Why I started shooting the beautiful Landscapes of Port Washington & The Gold Coast As a ten-time Emmy Award-winning producer, editor, photographer, I have spent more than 30 years behind the lens. My mother blessed me with the unique ability to be able to find beauty in everything, and God has blessed me with the talents to capture and share it. Port Washington and the Gold Coast continues to furnish me with a plethora of naturally beautiful sights, incredible history and a wonderfully diverse community that provides endless opportunities to capture and share that beauty as I see it.

When the pandemic hit in March of 2020, like many of us, my job became a work from home situation. I found myself in the unique position of having a couple of free extra hours a day that formerly were consumed by a commute into Manhattan. Instead of focusing on all the negativity in the world during the pandemic, I chose to take a two-hour hike every day and capture as many stunning images as I possibly could and share them with my followers on Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and Twitter. The goal was to fill as many social media feeds with beautiful photos that could transport you to a better, happier and more positive place.

Long Island Traditions Announces 2021 Bay House Tour Registration Long Island Traditions (LIT) is excited to announce that after a year-long hiatus due to COVID-19, bay house tours will be resuming in 2021 with a tour in August and a tour in September. These 12-person tours provide a very unique and personal opportunity to visit Long Island’s historic bay houses and hear stories directly from their owners.

I

n the Town of Hempstead 30 bay houses once stood on island marshlands, originally built by fishermen and baymen as fishing and hunting shacks. These houses have been passed down from generation to generation, and cared for with love and devotion by their owners. After

the devastation of Superstorm Sandy only 14 remained, with many damaged. The owners have been repairing their historic houses, now considered eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The bay houses are inaccessible by land and can only be accessed via water.

Each bay house tour visits two surviving bay houses via a small boat, where participants will get to go inside and hear tales from their owners. Space is extremely limited, with only 12 people per trip for safety reasons. Participants must be able to climb ladders and feel comfortable in a work environment. Proof of COVID vaccination is required.

Long Island Traditions’ Director, Nancy Solomon, has been documenting these rare and special bay houses since the 1980’s, and her definitive book on the topic, “On the Bay,” explores the traditional lifestyle of present-day bay house dwellers, whose families have harvested these waters for more than three centuries.

She began offering bay house tours in 1988 as a way of clearing up misconceptions about the houses, and to share the trials and joys of being a bay house owner with the public.

“Storms and hurricanes make owning a bay house extremely challenging,” Solomon said. “We get to hear from the owners themselves about the history of the homes and their inhabitants, and how they have managed to maintain the houses through all of nature’s challenges.”

Two days of tours are scheduled, with two tours per day. Tours can

only take place during high tide, otherwise the boat could get stuck, notes Solomon. Tours will leave from Freeport on Aug. 28 and from Long Beach on Sept. 12. On each date there will be two tours, one at 11 a.m. and one at 1 p.m. Tours will take 1.5 hours and visit two bay houses.

Tickets are very limited as only 12 people can register for each trip.

Long Island Traditions members can register beginning June 14. All others can register beginning July 7. There is a ticket limit of two per person. No children under 10 allowed. The trip will be cancelled in the event or rain.

Please note that proof of a COVID vaccination is required two weeks prior to the trip. You must be vaccinated and able to show proof in order to participate in the bay house tours for safety reasons. It’s no secret that Port Washington is and has been home to many of Long Island’s big names. Here are 10 celebrities and notable people from Port Washington.

Pete Fornatale A long-time resident of Port, Fornatale was an author, highly respected DJ in New York City where he was considered pioneer of FM Rock radio. This Fordam University alum died on April 26, 2012.

John Philip Sousa His home on Hicks Lane is a Port Washington landmark. And we have named a school as well as a bandshell for this composer of military and patriotic tunes. Not only did he invent the sousaphone, but he also was on the entertainment committee of the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. Sousa died in 1932.

Burt Young Famous for his role in Rocky, the 74-year-old Young is more than just a famous, well-regarded actor. He also is an accomplished painter, working in his Main Street studio/home. Young also is known for giving his time and lending his celebrity to good causes in the community.

Jean Ritchie The Kentucky-born folksinger was a key figure in the folk revival of the mid 20th century. This Port resident was responsible for bringing the dulcimer to the attention of mainstream audiences. And she not only played with the likes of Doc Watson, but also received a Fulbright Scholarship to research folk music.

Marian McPartland Port is still mourning the death in August 2013 of this jazz legend. She was born in England, but Port was her home for decades, and she was a familiar presence in town. She performed for kings as well as the underprivileged (as in the accompanying photo).

Perry Como The singer and leading TV celebrity of the 1950s, Como lived in Sands Point, and was an accomplished golfer. On the October 3, 1962, broadcast of his TV show, Como played 18 holes at the Sands Point Club with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

Carlos Beltrán The New York Yankee outfielder lived in Port during his pro career. Born in Puerto Rico, he was the Rookie of the Year in 1999 while with the Kansas City Royals. His lasting fame is as a hitter in the post season. Some have called him “The Other Mr. October.”

Kenneth Langone This founder of The Home Depot was raised in Roslyn Heights, the child of a plumber and cafeteria worker. A Sands Point resident, Langone is a notable philanthropist in causes ranging from hospitals (Manhattan’s Langone Medical Center) to universities (the Langone Program at NYU’s Stern School of Business).

Johnny Winter The rock guitarist and perhaps America’s best-known albino took up residence in Sands Point in the 1970s.

John J. Floherty A prolific author of the mid 20th century, this resident of Baxter Estates wrote more than 40 career-oriented books for young people, including Our FBI: An Inside Story, Sentries of the Sea, and Five Alarm: The Story of Fire Fighting. He died on December 3, 1964.

Paul D. Schreiber

A Time In History In the summer of 1917, Paul D. Schreiber was 35 years old, newly married to his wife, Dorothy, and had been principal at Port Washington High School for one year, following a four-year career at Milford High School in New York. After only a few years, he became the superintendent of schools.

He was credited with keeping the school district productive and intact, even during the Depression. Under his direction, medical and psychological services programs developed, along with vocal and instrumental music departments.

The photo depicts Schreiber at his retirement dinner in 1953. He was a

member of a variety of educational groups, and was a lifelong member of the American Legion—despite his delay being accepted, he did still serve a short stint in the Armed Forces. Even after retirement from the school district, he was recognized for his work, especially after the high school was dedicated in his name in 1958. After his passing in 1974, Schreiber left behind his wife Dorothy, daughter Matilda and sister Mary. He also had five granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Since the beginning of its history, there have been and are so many fascinating people who shape Port Washington into what is is becoming. Their seemingly small contributions to the hamlet on a daily basis instantly become the fabric that weaves this cooperative effort to make it such an enjoyable and sought-after place to live and work.

ne of those people in a sea of thousands is Vanessa Nastro, an archivist and special collections librarian at the Port Washington Public Library. Nastro holds a master’s degree in library and information science from Queens College with a certificate in archives and preservation of cultural materials. Her previous work involving photographic collections include the Aperture Foundation, Phillips Auctioneers and Adelphi University. She is the author of Along Manhasset Bay (Arcadia Press) with accompanying walking tour app (now available for Android and iPhone) and a committee member for the Preservation of Local History for the Long Island Libraries Resource Council.

Working so passionately for the good of Port Washington, we had a chance to speak with Nastro about her experience.

How did you become a librarian?

I had worked in a public library while in college. After I graduated, I moved to Italy to focus on working in the arts. When I returned, I was fortunate to mentor with a reference librarian at the Freeport Memorial Library who convinced me to go to library school and specialize in archives and art librarianship. What’s the best thing about being a librarian?

I think of myself first and foremost as an archivist which is very different from a librarian—interestingly, what I love the most is that I essentially do two professions in one. I think being an archivist in a public library is a truly unique experience. Historically the role of an archivist is a solitary one.

But here at the library I get to work with so many wonderful organizations and community members.

It’s actually a very public role. I also love working with photograph collections. Collectively our archive houses thousands of photographs, negatives and lantern slides. I have always enjoyed working with these mediums—they all require different levels of attention in terms of how they are stored and accessed.

Has anyone in Port Washington inspired what you do at the library? Do you have any fun library previews to share?

I’m inspired by our volunteers, both past and present. They have brought so much knowledge, experience and dedication to our library and the local history center.

People like Virginia Marshall Martus who helped create our collection of nautical oral histories

and has donated so much of her personal collection of nautical ephemera to the library. Also Dr. George Williams who has written numerous publications on the history of Port Washington. So many times I find myself going back to his work when I receive in-depth history questions.

Nastro leads the library’s Art Advisory Council and is behind many of its successful art exhibits and installations. She is also behind the curation and creation of the upcoming Columns Gallery exhibit (opening July 1) which will be the cornerstone of the “Along Manhasset Bay” series and will be on display in the library through the end of the year. This exhibition celebrates the launch of the library’s first app and digital walking tour, Along Manhasset Bay Historical Walking Tour as well as the publication of Nastro’s local history book, Along Manhasset Bay. This exhibit draws on research collected by the Local History Center and the Nautical Advisory Council and will showcase a variety of well-known and never before seen images including aerial images of Manhasset Bay photographed over the span of four decades. This exhibit is made possible by a generous gift from the Virginia Marshall Martus Estate.

For years, Landmark On Main Street has been considered the beacon of the community, and with a rich history that it has, how can it not be?

“T

he Landmark of today is the result of the kind of activism that Port Washington is known for,” Laura Mogul, who is the executive director of Landmark On Main Street said.

“When the school district was preparing to sell the 1908 building in 1984, a group of concerned citizens formed a coalition to save the beloved landmark structure. They identified not only potential uses for the building, but also funding sources. The building opened in its new incarnation in 1995. We share this building with senior apartments and the YAI program, and we manage the space that includes the Jeanne Rimsky Theater, Doctors’ Gym, Parent Resource Center, Childrens Center and the PiT (Teen Center).

There isn’t anything else quite like Landmark, either here in Port or really, anywhere.”

So how did Mogul earn the prestigious title of executive director?

According to her, it was her just being in the right place, at the right time.

“I call this my ‘Third Act’,” she

said. “I had a career in advertising, then a second career in community nonprofit volunteer service. When this position opened up, I was encouraged to apply by people I had worked with in the community. And it turned out to be the perfect way to combine all my past experience.”

As executive director, Mogul has to wear many hats to ensure that the Landmark runs efficiently and effectively.

“We’re a very small staff here and we all back each other up to make the ‘magic’ happen,” Mogul explained. “Which means that at various moments in any given day, I’m the CEO, Marketing Director, Development Associate, PR spokesperson, board liaison, building manager, programming director, grant writer, cheerleader, Zoom camera person and computer tech.”

So what is Mogul most proud of as her title of executive director comes to close? Mogul is retiring this year after holding the executive director title for the past six and a half years.

“I’m proud of the place Landmark occupies in the life of

our community,” she said. “From the building on outward, we’ve used every bit of our resources to bring the performing arts to the community and the community to the performing arts. Yes, we have a solid regional reputation as a regional arts presenter, but first and foremost we serve our community.”

Although being executive director is fascinating and rewarding, it can also be exhausting, Mogul added.

“A normal week in season is 60 to 70 hours,” she said. “The last 15 pandemic months in particular have been tough. It has felt at times like I was carrying the weight of the entire organization in my head. I’ve taken Landmark pretty far during my tenure, and I’m looking forward to seeing where my successor will take us next.”

And with the pandemic slowly coming to a close—at least in the United States—it was a punch in the gut for the Landmark.

“For 25-plus years our service to the community has been all about live experiences—concerts, student performances and community events in the theater; festivals, birthday parties and sports in the gym,” Mogul explained.

“The pandemic really was a punch in the gut for us, but not for long. We learned to livestream, turned our

parking lot into an outdoor ‘venue’ and provided the entertainment for the Port Outdoors Dine & Shop nights.

Without our regular season, though, our revenue took a hit. No ticket sales, few sponsorships, few rentals. We put out an appeal in the fall for support to get us through the dark time, and our community really came out for us.

As of now, we’re still waiting to hear about our SVOG [grant] application; if that comes out OK we can breathe a little easier.”

So what does Mogul want the community to know about the Landmark?

“We are quite literally a beacon in this community,” she said. “You can see the clocktower from pretty much everywhere in town. And I think our fellow residents know that everything we do, we do for their benefit.

Whether that’s bringing world-class entertainment to their hometown at affordable prices, making the Jeanne Rimsky Theater available for recitals, fundraisers and events at below-market rates or renting out our gym for sports, events and birthday parties, we’re here for our community in so many ways. And they’re here for us.”

The Sands Point Preserve The jewel in the crown of the Nassau County Parks Department

When most of the world was frozen in place by COVID-19 and all that came with it, the Sands Point Preserve was in a unique position to pivot while proving to be a refuge for people seeking a respite from the pandemic. Situated on 216 acres, the Preserve’s huge expanse provided a place for visitors to safely social distance and hit the metaphysical reset button in a way that temporarily banished the emotional heft of the coronavirus, enforced mask-wearing notwithstanding. The estate’s role as an inadvertent outdoor oasis was one it was uniquely suited to play according to Executive Director Beth Horn.

“T

he Preserve got through the pandemic for two reasons.”

Horn said. “We took all our normally onsite educational and wellness programs and took them virtual from the very beginning of the pandemic. Immediately, we had all the registrants that were ready to come to the Preserve before the pandemic ready to transition into the online programs. We kept our registration up because there was no break—we pivoted instantly.

That was the very early part. The second reason we did so well getting through the pandemic was that we focused all of our programs and promotions on the outdoors because the Preserve was one of the few places that was a public park where people could go almost whenever

they wanted. The place is so big that it was easy to social distance.

People could come out, relax on the grounds and feel safe. What we found was a record number of daily visitors and memberships went way up.”

Pre-pandemic, a normal day’s attendance would be 400 to 500 cars on a summer day on a Saturday or Sunday with 400 cars equating to 700 to 800 people. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Horn estimated that number doubled with roughly 50,000 people coming out to explore the grounds during that time.

“People would say once you get out of your car and you are away from the parking lot and disperse around the grounds, you never feel

like you’re in a crowd,” Horn said. “It doesn’t feel at all crowded and that’s a really nice feature of the Preserve.”

With a $2 million annual budget driving the Preserve, visitor admission and membership fees became the lifeblood for Sands Point, particularly given the fact that normal revenue generators such

as television and movie shoots, weddings, fundraisers and private events were either completely suspended or reduced to the point of not being nearly close to what Sands Point needs to keep operating.

We are extremely appreciative of all the people that came out and turned to the Preserve during such a difficult time.”

Taking A Walk Through The Past With it unique positioning as both a museum and nature preserve, visitors have plenty to indulge in whether tastes run to learning more about history of the Gilded Age, the Gold Coast and Gatsby Era robber barons like the Goulds and Guggenheims or just to commune with the great outdoors. The two dominant buildings at Sands Point are Castle Gould, 100,00-square-foot medieval castle modeled after Ireland’s Kilkenny Castle that was completed in 1902 by financier Jay Gould as an offering to his bride, actress Katherine Clemmons.

When she failed to be impressed

by Gould’s efforts, he doubled down and constructed Hempstead House, a nearby 50,000-squarefoot Tudor-style mansion with a 60-foot-tall entry foyer. While the Gould-Clemmons union ended in divorce, the buildings continue to enchant and inspire awe via the extensive craftsmanship on display. When mining tycoon Daniel Guggenheim purchased the estate from Gould in 1917, he gifted 90 acres of property to son Daniel, who constructed a FrenchNorman manor house on the bluffs overlooking the Long Island Sound. The younger Guggenheim dubbed it Falais, which means “cliff” in French. When father Daniel passed away in 1930, the younger Guggenheim’s mother Florence built and relocated to Mille Fleurs, a smaller mansion on the property that included a garden of “a thousand flowers.” By 1971, Nassau County acquired 127 acres for public recreational use while the recent death of Harry Guggenheim that same year saw the late philanthropist deeding his 90-acre estate, including the fully furnished Falaise mansion, to the county for use as a museum site. In 2003, the nonprofit Friends of the Sands Point Preserve was formed (it was later renamed the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy, Inc. in 2016).

For Horn, who called nearby Port Washington home for 20 years and knew of the Preserve when she took the position of executive

director in 2016, she was immediately impressed by the expanse and potential it had to attract more visitors.

“One of the biggest surprises I discovered when I started working here and one of the things I really enjoy is that the spaces allow for really interesting programming,” she said. “We started doing outdoor concerts, murder mysteries inside of Hempstead House along with all kinds of music performances and dance. We could also start to do all kinds of cultural programming. That was marvelous and is something we’re getting back to. I also discovered that there is a community that is not only Sands Point. It is the region really coming out for those different cultural programs. So that was a nice meeting of the programming and the audience.”

Communing With Nature The Sands Point Preserve’s outdoor bona fides are numerous given myriad outdoor environments it contains from the lush woods and beach that looks out on the Sound to the great open lawn, pond and rose garden. Visitors can partake in a number of outdoor activities including nature walks (more thematic), wilderness adventures (monthly excursions with Ranger Eric and biologist Aaron Powers), nature baths (a meditative wellness walk), bird-watching tours and plenty of yoga. There are also self-guided tours complete with downloadable maps and available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Korean. It all adds up to what Horn feels is a very special place to visit on the North Shore.

“The Sands Point Preserve is a unique combination of a Gatsby Era historic estate and a nature preserve,” she said. “You can experience the cultural history that is the Gold Coast—those early industrialist families that made massive fortunes while they were creating the economy of the United States. And/or, you can venture across 216 acres and go through woods, around a pond, go down to a beach, a great open lawn and experience all these distinct and beautiful environments.

Christine Rice Named Chairwoman Soup Kitchen

he board of North Shore Soup Kitchen (NSSK) and NOSH, a program of NSSK, has elected Christine Rice to lead the organization.

“Christine Rice is the perfect person to lead the next chapter in this organization’s long 32-year life,” Madeline Rubenstein, chair for the past four years said. “I can only imagine the wonderful things the organization will accomplish under Christine’s capable guidance.”

Rice grew up with her nine siblings in Garden City and continues to reside in that community. She brings to her new role at NSSK a wealth of personal and professional experience which includes having been primary caretaker for her mother, who had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease, and her father, who died in 2013. She went on to serve the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center as director of special events and community outreach. In 2019, Rice was named executive director of the Glen Cove Senior Center.

The mother of two adult children,

Christine Rice Rice received a bachelor’s degree from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and a master’s degree from Adelphi University in Garden City.

The NSSK/NOSH board also announced that eight additional board members have been elected to office.

Matthew Catapano of Sea Cliff has worked with Doctors Without Borders and is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at Fordham University.

As a member of the NOSH program committee, he has created special

events for NOSH clients, particularly around holidays.

As a director of Cause Strategy Partners, Locust Valley’s Erin M. Connell oversees a national program to recruit, place, and train professionals to serve on nonprofit boards, helping nonprofits transform and strengthen their leadership.

Paula Cushman of Locust Valley brings a professional background in marketing and communications to the board as well as volunteer service with many educational and social services organizations including Save the Children Long Island, Old Westbury Gardens, the Green Vale School and the North Shore Land Alliance.

Sea Cliff’s Pete Hayes, a CPA and MBA in Finance, brings extensive professional experience in banking and consulting to the NSSK board. Hayes has served four terms as a Sea Cliff trustee and has been on the board of Habitat for Humanity of Nassau for the last 12 years.

Alan Hudson III has been assistant principal of Glen Cove High School

for the past 16 years. During the pandemic, with his wife and some of his staff he reached out to Long Island Harvest and NOSH to create the Glen Cove High School Food Pantry.

Locust Valley’s Nitika Moran, having been a consultant to several banks and major financial services firms, brings financial expertise to the NSKK board.

Attorney Catherine A. Schwarz of Oyster Bay Cove worked for the Washington D.C. firm of Foley & Lardner LLP focusing on commercial and securities litigation and antitrust law. She is presently a freelance attorney with Montage Legal Group.

Bob Sherman of Sea Cliff brings broad administrative and program management experience to the board.

He was chief administrative officer for the SCO Family of Services in Glen Cove and director of operations and assistant commissioner for administration in Nassau County’s Department of Social Services.

Troop 45 Holds Eagle Scouts Court Of Honor

n June 12, Troop 45 in Mineola held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor and awarded nine boys with the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award in Scouting and one that only very few in Scouting ever achieve.

Anthony Randazzo, Alexander Castiglia, Domingos DaSilva, Luis Goncalves, Kevin Bongiorno, Thomas Franz, Jack Schneider, Evan Austria and David Kempner were honored

Tracy Abamont.

This unique award has bestowed on scouts who have not only displayed commitment to a goal, strong leadership qualities, hard work and dedication, but also managed to get through the obstacles of a pandemic.

Despite these challenges, they were still able to complete the rigorous requirements.

An Eagle project is a significant undertaking that involves planning, fundraising and organizing by the scout, who leads other scouts and adult volunteers in executing the

associated activity. The projects are geared to provide a benefit to local communities and organizations.

Some of the beneficiaries from this year’s Troop 45 Eagle class were: Rushmore Avenue School in Carle Place, Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind campus in Smithtown, Corpus Christi in Mineola, Mineola Middle School, St. Aidan’s School and Parish in Williston Park, The Lutheran

New Principal At Hampton Street School Leigh Shaw was appointed principal of Hampton Street School in the Mineola Union Free School District, effective July 1.

Shaw has five years of experience in the district and was hired as an instructional leader for grades pre-K through 12. In this administrative position, Shaw was responsible for professional development, coaching and supporting teachers and teacher leaders, formal teacher observations and special projects focused on furthering the Mineola mission. One project Shaw is exceptionally proud of is embedding a schoolwide enrichment model throughout the district, including virtual enrichment clusters in both Spanish and English, as well as supporting the development of the double accelerated seventh grade math course.

Most recently, Shaw served as Mineola’s virtual school principal for pre-K through second grade. This position allowed her to get to know Hampton’s learners and families on a deeper level. Additionally, she taught the fourth grade academically gifted program throughout this school year.

Prior to working in the Mineola UFSD, Shaw spent the majority of her career as a teacher at P.S. 334—The Anderson School in Manhattan.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree in

childhood education from Hofstra University and an advanced degree in school leadership from Hunter College.

“It is an honor to join the Hampton family, a place I have admired and respected for the past five years,” Shaw said. “I look forward to supporting the dedicated learners, educators and families in continuing to achieve the Mineola mission.”

PROTECTING OUR WATER FOR TODAY AND THE FUTURE Nearly all the communities within the 11th Legislative District are situated along the shorelines of Hempstead Harbor, Manhasset Bay and Long Island Sound. This makes our efforts to reduce the levels of nitrogen and other contaminants found within these bodies of water especially important.

Too much nitrogen causes algae to grow faster than aquatic ecosystems can process. Significant increases in algae harm water quality and food resources by depriving fish and other aquatic life of the oxygen they need to survive. Excess nitrogen can also contaminate our potable water by infiltrating Long Island’s sole-source freshwater aquifer.

Here in Nassau County, we are continuing to explore and deploy natural processes to remove nitrogen and other harmful contaminants from waterways, and I am proud to have fought for and secured funding for critical upgrades

in District 11 and across Nassau County.

Crescent Beach in Glen Cove, for example, has been closed for 10 years due to bacterial contaminants that have been found in the estuary that flows onto the beach. County-funded studies revealed that a natural solution utilizing sea-grass plantings would be feasible because of the way they can efficiently soak up harmful bacteria without harming the plants themselves. Thus far, enhancing plantings and re-routing some water flow to promote natural filtration has yielded positive results, and we are hopeful this will put Crescent Beach on the road to reopening at long last.

We are also continuing to make long-term investments in pivotal sewer infrastructure. Three county contracts totaling nearly $20 million are delivering key upgrades such as new sewers in Sea Cliff, upgrades to the Glen Cove Wastewater Treatment and

Cedar Creek Waste Control Treatment Plants, and key upgrades to the bulkhead located along the Glen Cove Treatment Plant and Glen Cove Creek, being replaced to protect nearby waterways.

The county is also dedicating resources to aid residents in areas outside of sewer coverage areas. SEPTIC (Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness) will provide grants to replace standard or failing systems with state-of-the-art alternative wastewater treatment systems, which are designed to provide a cost-effective and environmentally sound options for the thousands of businesses homeowners. Not only are they better for the environment, they’re more convenient because they require fewer pump-outs.

Through a matching grant program presented in partnership with New York State, eligible Nassau County property owners can apply for up to $20,000 in grants

toward the installation of nitrogen-reducing septic systems. Nassau homeowners and small businesses that discharge less than 1,000 gallons a day of wastewater are eligible to apply. Visit www.nassaucountyny.gov/ septicreplace for details, including a list of provisionally approved manufacturers.

Bethpage State Park—Jewel Of Long Island Long Island, the longest island on the U.S. mainland, is a crown jewel packed with activities. From the beautiful preserves, outstanding wineries of the North and South Fork, to boating and surfing on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along with deep-sea fishing, inshore anglers have abundant choices with the fresh and saltwater inlets and bays.

When seeking land adventure, the diamond of Long Island sits on 1,477-acres—Bethpage State Park.

The park’s cluster of activities includes the polo fields, the Bikeway, mountain biking trails, picnic area, recreational fields, championship golf courses and hiking trails. All of this along with a deep and interesting history.

In 1687, Puritan Thomas Powell purchased 15 square miles of land from local Indian tribes in an acquisition referred to as The Bethpage Purchase. Centuries later, Benjamin Franklin Yoakam, a wealthy railroad executive, acquired 1,368 acres in 1912.

He had the Green Course built and opened it in 1923. In 1931, The Long Island State Park Commission purchased an option on the property.

With unemployment rampant, a piece of 1933 legislation put forth by then-Parks

The initial approval to enter the “project development” phase is only the first step and the project still faces myriad hurdles. Completion of this work includes the FTA issuing an environmental finding, along with reaching agreements with Nassau County concerning proposed project budget, scope and milestones.

This averages several years.

This is followed by the project being given permission by the FTA to advance to the next stage known as “final engineering.” Progression of final design and engineering from 30 to 100 percent averages several more years. This could include review and approval

authorization and appropriation of funding under FTA New Starts budgets to finance the FFGA. There can be no FFGA without documentation that the local recipients (Nassau County) share is in place.

How would Nassau County come up with $300 million to leverage $150 million in federal dollars, assuming a total project cost of $450 million? Would Nassau County contribute $150 million and ask Albany for $150 million resulting in a three way 33 percent county/state/federal cost sharing agreement?

Based on the lack of progress to date, Nassau County may be unable to obtain federal New Starts funding

for the Nassau Hub Bus Rapid Transit project until 2026.

The future success of the Nassau Hub is dependent upon significant mass transit improvements. They don’t appear to be progressing on the same time line.

Some have estimated a $450 million total cost.

One potential source of funding is the FTA discretionary competitive New Starts program. This project is not included in the latest FTA May 2021 New Starts Report for upcoming federal fiscal year 2022. After 16 years of planning, the project has not being admitted into the New Starts process. This is bad news. This first step of obtaining permission to enter the Project Development Phase of the FTA New Starts

NEIGHBORS IN THE NEWS Levittown Community Council will host its twenty-third annual Lazy Days of Summer event on July 10.

Last year was the first time it didn’t take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, a more than two-decade tradition, is held at the East Village Green Park.

The day is a no-cost event with pony rides, a petting zoo, activities throughout the day, games and entertainment at one of Levittown’s beautiful village green areas. All residents of Levittown and Island Trees are welcome to attend and enjoy the fun-filled, relaxing day.

The event has been free to the community for its duration and is made possible by Levittown Community Council members’ dues and the support of local businesses. The event will be slightly curtailed this year due to Town of Hempstead restrictions, but its main activities including pony rides, petting zoo, games, and entertainment by MisMatch the Clown, Secret BBQ Band and Ye Pyrate Brotherhood will be featured. This year’s theme is Sail Into Lazy Days of Summer and a scavenger hunt to find the Pirate’s treasure chest will be part of the day’s activities.

Third Squad Detectives report the arrest of two men for burglary that occurred on June 21 at 3:15 a.m. in Carle Place.

According to detectives, officers responded to Rushmore Elementary School for an alarm. Upon arrival, officers began walking through the building to investigate additional interior alarms. Additional units were canvassing the outside of the building.

During the investigation, two male subjects were observed on the roof.

27-year-old Gem Hattat and 27-yearold Jarrett Boyarsky, were arrested after they jumped down. It was determined that Hattat and Boyarsky were responsible for the following burglaries: June 4, 2021—Both entered Carle Place High School. Stolen items were musical instruments. A smartboard and laptop were damaged. June 10, 202—Boyarsky entered Carle Place High School. Stolen items were musical instruments. June 18, 202—Hattat entered Island Power Sports in Massapequa. No loss reported.

Hattat is charged with third-degree burglary and three counts of third-degree attempted burglary.

Boyarsky is charged with two counts of third-degree burglary and two counts of third-degree attempted burglary. They were arraigned on June 22 in Mineola.

Great Neck Man Arrested In Mineola Assault

The Third Squad reports the arrest of man from Great Neck for assaulting a police officer that occurred on June 21 at 10:10 p.m. in Mineola.

Gerzon According to detectives, Maudial Third Precinct officers Hernandez were dispatched for a (Photo disturbance that occurred courtesy of NCPD) near the intersection of Mineola Boulevard and Grant Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found 27-year-old Gerzon Maudial Hernandez acting irate. Hernandez began to shout at the officers and became physically aggressive. As officers were placing Hernandez under arrest, he spat and kicked at officers. Hernandez continued to kick and spit on officers and a police medic as they secured him to a stretcher and transported him by a Nassau County Police ambulance to a nearby hospital. Two officers were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries to their hands.

Hernandez is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree harassment, false impersonation and resisting arrest. He was arraigned on June 22 in Mineola.

Eighth Squad Detectives report the arrest of a Bethpage man for a shooting that occurred on June 26 at 10:45 p.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, a 60-yearold male was driving a 2018 Jeep eastbound in the vicinity of 2349 Jericho Tpke. and struck a 47-year-old male that was crossing Jericho Turnpike.

The pedestrian suffered severe head trauma and was transported by an ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at 11 p.m. by a hospital physician. The driver remained at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

South High Badminton Wins County Championship Titles

T

he South High School Badminton program capped off successful seasons with Conference and County championship titles, including Nassau County singles and doubles champions on the boys team and a County team championship for the girls.

The Boys Badminton team completed the fall season (played from March–April 2021) as Undefeated Conference I Champions. The Rebels were runners-up in the County championship team tournament, but Great Neck athletes brought home championship titles from the singles and doubles tournament. Ryan Wu is the Nassau County Singles Champion and Yang Wang and Aidan Din are the Nassau County Doubles Champions.

The Girls Badminton team finished the spring season (May–June) with a regular season record of 9-1. The Lady Rebels earned the title of Nassau County Badminton Team Champions by defeating Jericho by a score of 5-2 at the team tournament in June. Great Neck’s team victory was supported by singles match wins by Kayla Wu, Emily Xia and Bernice Wang and doubles match wins by Grace Fong and Nicole Yim, and Myra Saeed and Preeti Shaji.

The coach for both the boys and girls badminton teams is Allison Gottfried, guidance counselor at South High. Gottfried was honored as Nassau County Coach of the Year.
