COLORS, PATTERNS AND HIPPIE-INSPIRED: PATCHWORK TUTORIAL
The block that Les Antònies are presenting in this post is another way to take advantage of the fabric scraps and to
test your sense of aesthetics. The biggest difficulty of this tutorial is to find the balance in the combination of patterns and the contrast of colours .
In the page where you can find the measurements, quantities and patterns you will see that we have used 9 different fabrics: 8 of them need two square of 10X10cm each; the other, only 1 square of the same measure. The first thing we have to do, the most important part of this block in particular, is to combine the pairs . We detail our
option in function of our tissues (1). We recommend you use some plain tissue. We used two different colours (purple 7 and black 1), but you can use only one and, in this case,
you should cut 4 squares of 10X10cm of the fabric chosen, instead of 2 squares. With all the pairs made, let's get started. Face the two squares (2); with a pencil mark a diagonal (3). Sew a seam on each side of the line drawn (4), cut between the seams, the diagonal marked (5), split up (6) and, finally, open; we have 2 squares with triangle (7). We must repeat the operation with all the pairs .
After ironing and trim, we already have all the elements to start the block . Note, especially, in the situation of the plains (black 1 and 7). We have placed it in the corners, so as you can see in the drawing (8): this is the special trick of the block , to get the effect of rays coming out of the central
square. Follow the pattern and let yourself be guided by your aesthetic instincts. When you already have everything mounted and decided, we begin to sew. Strip into Strip, sew the first square with the second (9), added the third (10) and we ended up with the fourth (11). The strips must have remained like the scheme (12). And now we join the strips between them: sew the second strip on the first (13), we join the third (14) and ended up with the last strip (15). That's how we should keep the block (16): square in square and rays at the extremes. Is longer to explain than to do. We hope that our hippy
“squared” inspired you to create your own effects of colour and patterns .
