«Quiro» is the first digital font I designed. The first stage was the calligraphy workshop with Mrs Eva Pöll, a calligrapher from Austria, where we got a first-hand experience of the principal ways of written communication. We experienced to experiment different old-style writing techniques like feather pens, bamboo pens and traditional calligraphic pens like the broad-nib pen. We then learned the basics concepts of handwriting. We wrote on paper all of the glyphs of the alphabet copying the so-called «Carolingian Minuscule» during the first stage of the Type Design teaching course-module. The second stage then was to scan our writings digitally, retrace them on illustrator and finally add or alter the handwritten serifs. It is at this point, after designing the regular typeface, we were free to decide to develop also variations; that’s when I decided to create a light and bold versions of my typeface «Quiro», along with the slanted varieties, which I designed only by digital means.
