GA House Rome 2014-15, Under Construction

2014-15 | ANTONIO ALBERTO TOMAO | SIMONE PICANO | ALESSIA IACOVONI GA House GA House is a private villa located in a southern district of Rome. As part of a four-villas development, the house avails itslef of a garden and a private access. The renovation project involves the facades, the interior and the outdoor spaces. Moreover, the design brief included a large chant/music studio. The structural concrete, in its majesty and elegance, becomes the very element marking the interior spaces of the three levels. The opened space basement hosts the living area, the dining kitchen, a small bathroom and the living room. A 360° rotating wall, where the TV screen is installed, constantly modifies the space, giving everytime a different perception of this interior. The two double bedrooms are located on the first floor, together with two bathrooms and a large custom-made closet. The 50 sqm open space of the second floor, with its peculiar sloping ceilings, is the music and relax room. ANTONIO ALBERTO TOMAO

2014 | ANTONIO ALBERTO TOMAO | SIMONE PICANO | DARIA PASSARO En-tree is a hanging Christmas tree located in Piazza Duomo, the historical square of Siracusa. The 12 meters high tree puts down its roots into a square platform inscribed in a 6mt diameter circle while a geometrically defined wooden frame supports the light and transparent foliage. The trunk is partially replaced by a circular step, which, by a simple movement, allows users to climb on the foliage-hammock. The life-blood, therefore, is generated by to the people free to move in its interior. Due to its apparent weightlessness, together with its dimension, colours, movements, light and shadows, En-tree is a luminous lantern which establishes an interaction with the magnificent surrounding. It is an attraction element and at the same time could be either a chilling or a gathering place. It looks compact and defined from far off, but a close-up view reveals the reat value context. En-tree is a tent, a shelter, and aerial space that invites the public to be an active part of it. En-tree represents the community that lives in a minimum and a maximum space: the minimum is the delicate foliage of the tree, the maximum is the magnificent space of the ancient square. En-tree vibrates gently in the historic square, embodying the result of an experimental process obtained through a multidisciplinary approach, which fuses local materials and talent with technical and innovative competences. It is a delicate equilibrium reflecting the society and its values, satisfying its needs and protecting its wealth without just becoming means of individual expression.

Leverano Horizon Tower Leverano (LE) 2014, Hon.Ment. Competition

2014 | ANTONIO ALBERTO TOMAO | SIMONE PICANO The Hammock is a tower-refuge built with materials used for the olive harvest. Its lightweight structure towering over the foliage of the fruit trees It is a compact, transparent volume that does not obstruct the view of the surrounding landscape. The main structure is constituted by a steel frame: a 18 meters high parallelepiped with a square base whose simple geometry, framing the landscape, identifies the overall dimensions of the tower. This system is balanced by a network of steel cables that hold up the transparent floors. Made by recycled nets, the vertical surfaces shield the sun’s rays without preventing the view of the sky and placed on the outer perimeter delimit the various levels working as a protective filter. Their use allows to obtain an optimal climate inside the tower, dampening the effect of the solar radiation without hindering the passage of the air and achieving the best conditions for a summer refuge that appear luminous yet, at the same time, fresh and ventilated. The stairway itself becomes an instrument of observation. The ramps rotate clockwise by 90 ° to each floor allowing a 360 ° view of the surrounding landscape. The last ramp leads on the fifteen meters high panoramic terrace, directing the visitor’s sight to the west, toward the horizon drawn from the Ionian Sea. The Hammock is the result of an operation that inverts the image of the fortified tower, of which is only remaining the drawn memory, a shape, an idea. ANTONIO ALBERTO TOMAO

Prenestino Sport Center Rome 2013, Project

2013 | UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA LA SAPIENZA | CONI SPA | ICS Located in Prenestino, suburb of Rome, this multifunctional sporting facility is a link between two large green areas: the park of Tor Sapienza and Via Palmiro Togliatti. The design proposed by the Department of Architecture and Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Rome, consists in a bridge, as ideal extension of one of the hills of Tor Sapienza park. The sloping effect of the building is obtained by leaning the landfill produced into the construction site, giving the building a look of carved body into the hill, only showing few openings, such as the main entrance and the pool. The sport facilities are expressed in all architectural flexible elements: the green roof allows a bike path and a life trail, the “flight of steps” facade, the pool’s concrete partition is, on the outside, a climbing wall. The two districts are connected by a green area eligible for sports events and leisure. On top of the hill structure, rejected from the hill as a foreign body ,the panoramic restaurant shows itself as an autonomous and well recognizable entity.

Equestrian Center Rome 2013, Project

2013 | UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA LA SAPIENZA The goal of the experimental project is to transform a small equestrian center in an economically self-sufficient structure that imposes itself as a sustainable model of sports facility in order to become a point of reference for the practice of riding in the center of Rome. It was decided, in the absence of dedicated literature references, to design (or redesign) a club that was a model to be followed , from which to extrapolate an esportabilie and easily repeatable project in order to set some standards in the design of sports facilities related to horse riding. Therefore a collaboration was started with a young agronomist of FISE (Italian Federation of Equestrian Sports), Dr. Lucia Devenuto, and the teachers of the University Master Degree in Architectural Design of Sports ,organized by CONI Spa (Olympic National Italian Committee), University of Rome “La Sapienza” and ICS (Istituto per il Credito Sportivo). Thanks to the strategic location of the dedicate space , dates back to the early 900 (Villa Glori, in the Parioli district, adjacent to the Auditorium “Parco della Musica” , designed by Renzo Piano and the Olympic Village) and using a fairly large area , we wanted rethinking the paths and access to the sporting area , redesigning the in order to solve the problem of overlapping paths for visitors and riding athletes and maintaining, with innovations , the existing structures. The sportive area has been enhanced with the inclusion of a outdoor racing space capable of hosting international competitions (dressage, obstacle course) and a covered arena, parking areas, various kinds of services to support the club (gym, catering services, a guest house, shopping and socializing spaces). GRA2 Parkway Rome 2012, Project

2012 | UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA LA SAPIENZA The transport deficiency of Rome, together with the need of connecting the urban suburbs with city center, led to the GRA2-PARKWAY project, a large motorway which encircles the capitale as a second major ring-junction crossing the existing GRA in different joints and passing through and connecting the roman frame. Wholly thought as a dual four-lane motorway consisting of rails, underground car parks, green spaces dedicated to sport and renewable energy production, GRA2PARKWAY is an hybrid structure of a linear city providing dwelling and facilities such as office buildings and other services. The ambition of the project is to reconfigure and reorganize the outskirts of Rome, solving the problems related to its spontaneous, chaotic and not adequately designed growth, while relieving traffic congestion.
