Case study on Concept Art

Case study on a concept for a Sci-Fi short movie set in a dystopian future The challenge was to make an image that evokes a Sci-Fi environment but with a realistic look.

The aim was to define an image of a futuristic hangar for drones equipped with weapons of war, with a wild nature background such as a desert or a snowy mountainous landscape.

The research of realistic references has been the foundation of this project.

The most important references include the organic architecture of ‘The Turin Exhibition Palace’ by Pier Luigi Nervi for the hangar; pictures of landscapes in Afaganistan for the background; some of the drones most used for shooting in cinema and several contemporary weapons.

Key work stages: -Research, images editing, mood board.

-Hand sketches for the most important elements of the image, most of them to define the shape and the scale of the drone and of the weapons on it.

-3D modelling on Autodesk Maya -Texture on Subsatance Painter -Matte Painting for the background on Adobe Photoshop.

-Compositing and painting of all the elements 2D to obtain the final image.
