We have used Anderson for a long time now due to his reliability. The calves are really good calves, uniform and of good colour. They are a perfect cross on Holstein cows, and make good money!

Governor is a very similar sire to Anderson, the calves achieve top prices at market and are very uniform in size and shape. Coat colour is good and the calves are easy born, and go on and thrive.

Our Hogan calves have been a bit taller, bigger framed calves, that are nice and strong. Again we have experienced no issues with calf colour and they have grown very well with no issues.

The Americano calves have normally been slightly smaller born than the others, but it hasn’t held them back, they very quickly transformed and have gone on and grown well.

These calves show a huge desire to live and thrive, at feeding time they will be waiting at the front of the pen for feed.

Our Duster calves have been born with fantastic broad frames and great length, they should definitely go on to make great quality animals.

Welcome to the

Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey Our selection programme allows us to identify top quality sires for use on dairy cows... Genus ABS can identify young beef bulls which have the potential to transmit the traits we are looking for in a beef sire, by using EBV data. However, EBV data only relates to data collected on beef cows and is often based on small data sets. To identify elite beef sires for use on dairy cows, we have gathered significant data sets on beef sires performance on dairy cows through the Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey to provide sires with a 'proven' status. Hundreds of beef sires have been tested through our survey for the past 40 years, with around 90% being rejected for failing to make the grade.

I’ve used young British Blue sires for the past two years, I have been very impressed with the quality of the calves and have had no problems calving them. The latest calves from Rosemount Iggy, Rosemount Hal, and Greystone Jupiter have been really good with Rosemount Hal being my pick of them all.

We currently use Genus ABS test British Blue sires on our non breeders, and use a selection of different sires at one time to spread the risk. The calves are thrifty and are easy to manage. The calving survey form is clear and easy to fill out. To date, we’ve had some great calves by Genus ABS test beef sires.

We first started using them due to a shortage in proven Angus sires for the heifers, after calving these bulls with very little issues we moved on to trying other breeds like Blue, Limousin and Simmental on the cows. Data is shown on a BSI (Beef Sire Index) scale of 70 to 130 and all proven Genus ABS sires calving survey results are compared with Genus ABS breed averages, based on tens of years of calving survey information. Breed averages differ between beef breeds. Comparisons can only be made between beef bulls of the same breed.

Looking at the British Blue breed as an example, we have tested over 147 bulls over 20 years, and we have found more than £150 of value difference, per calving, between the very best and worst bulls that we have ever tested (as shown in graph one on the next page).

Genus ABS sired calves also achieve higher prices... As we have built calf value into BeefAdvantage, we have looked closely at the values achieved by Genus ABS sired progeny compared to our leading competitor, and we have found a significant difference. Looking at British Blue sired calves, Genus ABS sires provide bull calves that achieve £44 more per calf, and heifer calves that achieve £33 more per calf, than our leading competitor.

We have been supplying BeefConnect since the scheme started back in 2014, we find the system simple and practical to sell our Angus calves straight off the farm. Prompt payment and knowing the price is a big plus for our business and the decision is made to sell or not rather than taking our chances at the market. Having the calves collected saves us time, they always call to say when they are on their way so we aren’t waiting around. We also use the Genus ABS RMS service, our farm protocol is to serve all heifers to sexed and on the third service they get served to beef, we use a range of British Blue and Angus on the cows, with Ploughman as our chosen Angus bull.

We have changed our breeding policy from previously using all black and white semen to now using Angus and sexed semen. We found we were having too many black and white bulls, so thought we needed to change as we became short of heifer replacements and were not getting enough value on our bull calves. We now serve the whole herd to sexed semen and move to Angus after second service. We use a range of Genus ABS proven Angus bulls and our own stock bull who sweeps up. We have recently joined BeefCornerstone and we are looking forward to seeing some young bull progeny along with helping the bulls to become proven sires and hopefully achieve a premium price if they are within the first 50 calves collected through the BeefConnect system. We like the way BeefConnect works, agreeing a price on farm for the calves, and having the ability to have them collected off farm from as young as 10 days old, this gives us more time and space to concentrate on our replacements. ‘Who’s Your Daddy?’ is a campaign that Meadow Quality whole-heartedly supports. As a 100% British farmer-owned business, we buy tens of thousands of calves each year from our Dairy farmer producers, and we also see many of these calves throughout their life all the way to finished beef. With meat processors increasing their focus on finished cattle specifications, being able to evaluate the impact of the performance data on as many sires as possible (both beef and dairy breeds) can significantly benefit the beef industry as we seek to improve profits from genetic progress across the beef supply chain. Increasing conception rates Due to demand the Fertility Plus product range has grown to offer six unique products:

Over ten years ago, following years of innovative research,Genus ABS revolutionised beef AI in dairy herds with the introduction of Fertility Plus, the first beef fertility product.

Fertility plus® BRITISH BLUE Contains semen from three British Blue sires that are above average for calving ease and certified as 'proven' in our beef stud.

Originally we ran three stock bulls on the farm, an Angus, Limousin and Simmental, but in 2015 we started on RMS and started to use Genus beef semen. Some cows had been getting injured when being served by stock bulls and moving to AI was a great answer to this. In 2015 we used Simmental sire Keeldrum Clio and British Blue sire Forest Jacob, but currently cows are getting served to British Blue sire Greystone Governor and Fertility Plus British Blue. Moving to Fertility Plus we have achieved much greater calf values with our bull calves averaging £403 and heifer £349 over recent months. The quality has been great and calves all easily born. Fertility Plus and RMS together have done a great job taking our pregnancy rate from 9% to 16%.

Getting an easy born calf is of most importance to our business, if we can get an interference free calving we feel that we can get our cows get back in calf a lot quicker.
