PICKS FROM THE PANEL We asked five Genus ABS customers to join our selection panel to choose their favourite sires in our current beef line up and share their reasons why...

Fantastic calves that are thrifty and keen to drink. They are strong with great shape, and recently they have been averaging over £350 at four weeks old. Our highest priced calf recently was a bull calf that sold for £397 at Beeston market.

We have used Anderson for a long time now due to his reliability. The calves are really good calves, uniform and of good colour. They are a perfect cross on Holstein cows, and make good money!

Governor is a very similar sire to Anderson, the calves achieve top prices at market and are very uniform in size and shape. Coat colour is good and the calves are easy born, and go on and thrive.

Our Hogan calves have been a bit taller, bigger framed calves, that are nice and strong. Again we have experienced no issues with calf colour and they have grown very well with no issues.

The Americano calves have normally been slightly smaller born than the others, but it hasn’t held them back, they very quickly transformed and have gone on and grown well.

These calves show a huge desire to live and thrive, at feeding time they will be waiting at the front of the pen for feed.

Our Duster calves have been born with fantastic broad frames and great length, they should definitely go on to make great quality animals.

Goddard has been giving really good, strong, shapely calves which are ready to sell at three weeks. We have been getting premium prices for both his bull and heifer calves, and we have found him to be very fertile, consistently getting cows in calf first time.

We have used Ferrari for years, he is really consistent and you can trust him to get cows in calf and calve down without any issues. We have used him on both cows and heifers, but we choose to use him more on heifers.

In the past year we started to use Fertility Plus Native on problem cows, and have found it is helping get more cows in calf. The calves have been easily born, of good quality and are achieving really good prices at market.

Last year we started to use Duster and have been really pleased with the results. The calves have been really consistent, born easily with no problems, with fantastic shape and length and they sell really well through the local market.

Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey Our selection programme allows us to identify top quality sires for use on dairy cows... Genus ABS can identify young beef bulls which have the potential to transmit the traits we are looking for in a beef sire, by using EBV data. However, EBV data only relates to data collected on beef cows and is often based on small data sets. To identify elite beef sires for use on dairy cows, we have gathered significant data sets on beef sires performance on dairy cows through the Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey to provide sires with a 'proven' status. Hundreds of beef sires have been tested through our survey for the past 40 years, with around 90% being rejected for failing to make the grade.

I’ve used young British Blue sires for the past two years, I have been very impressed with the quality of the calves and have had no problems calving them. The latest calves from Rosemount Iggy, Rosemount Hal, and Greystone Jupiter have been really good with Rosemount Hal being my pick of them all.

We found we were having too many black and white bulls, so thought we needed to change as we became short of heifer replacements and were not getting enough value on our bull calves. We now serve the whole herd to sexed semen and move to Angus after second service. We use a range of Genus ABS proven Angus bulls and our own stock bull who sweeps up. We have recently joined BeefCornerstone and we are looking forward to seeing some young bull progeny along with helping the bulls to become proven sires and hopefully achieve a premium price if they are within the first 50 calves collected through the BeefConnect system. We like the way BeefConnect works, agreeing a price on farm for the calves, and having the ability to have them collected off farm from as young as 10 days old, this gives us more time and space to concentrate on our replacements. We send a calf to the market every now and again to check we are getting a strong price through BeefConnect, but BeefConnect has always come out better.

Increasing conception rates Due to demand the Fertility Plus product range has grown to offer six unique products:

Fertility plus® BRITISH BLUE Contains semen from three British Blue sires that are above average for calving ease and certified as 'proven' in our beef stud.

Originally we ran three stock bulls on the farm, an Angus, Limousin and Simmental, but in 2015 we started on RMS and started to use Genus beef semen. Some cows had been getting injured when being served by stock bulls and moving to AI was a great answer to this. In 2015 we used Simmental sire Keeldrum Clio and British Blue sire Forest Jacob, but currently cows are getting served to British Blue sire Greystone Governor and Fertility Plus British Blue. Moving to Fertility Plus we have achieved much greater calf values with our bull calves averaging £403 and heifer £349 over recent months. The quality has been great and calves all easily born. Fertility Plus and RMS together have done a great job taking our pregnancy rate from 9% to 16%.

His accolade of achievments were outstanding, at Shropshire Show he took Male Champion, while at the Royal Highland, Royal Welsh, Shropshire County, Ashby and Burwarton, he was awarded Male Champion, Breed Champion and Interbreed Champion. Laertes has been destined a lifetime of show success, having achieved Reserve Male Champion when he was only 9 months old at his first show, Buckingham County Show in 2014. He followed on from this to take Breed Champion at Newark Calf Show. Progeny from Laertes are rapidly following in their fathers foot steps, with one of his first progeny winning their class at the Christmas Calf Show held at Shrewsbury Cattle Market in 2016. His breeder has reported heifer calves have been averaging 36kg at birth, with bull calves averaging 42kg.
