It seems that folks everywhere sing the praises of their hometowns, but there is something truly special about Manhasset. From the wonderful schools to the beautiful scenery, Manhasset is a true Long Island gem. Here, people from around the community explain “Why I love Manhasset.” Sherry Huber, president, Munsey Park Garden Club What I like about Manhasset are the long winding roads, the noble trees, the shining ponds and bays. It’s a perfect place to take long walks with your dog or a friend and enjoy your freedom. Because of this, they are all willing to work hard, give 100 percent, and work together with their teammates to create a successful team. Even when we don’t win a game, we know that we left everything we had on that field. I love that everyone in Manhasset pushes themselves to their limit, and encourages others to do so as well. The pride, the sense of tradition and the work ethic this town instills in each person is something that has definitely shaped me into the person I am today, and it makes me proud to say that I grew up here.

The Pencil Impressionist When Manhasset resident Peter E. McGuggart retired from a successful advertising career a decade and a half ago, he set out to stoke a passion that had intensified over the years. He began capturing the low-lying fields and wetlands of Long Island. At first, he used pastels, but soon switched to colored pencils. Today, his work can be viewed at galleries from Manhasset to Greenport. “When I retired, I went back to my first love,” McGuggart said recently at his Manhasset home. Although he studied graphic design at Parsons School of Design in the early 1960s, “For me, it was the history and the fine arts area of Parsons that I enjoyed.” Upon graduation from Parsons, McGuggart worked for a year before being drafted. He spent two years in the Army, part of that time in Germany. “Short of marriage, my experience in the Army in Germany was the best,” he said. When he returned, he launched his career as a graphic designer. He became the creative director at Compton Advertising, which was eventually acquired by Saatchi & Saatchi. “I started working at an agency that did IBM work, and they had a great history of design. Design was a big thing at IBM in the 1950s and 1960s, so it was a privilege that they accepted your work,” he said. He eventually left Saatchi & Saatchi and spent the last five years of his career at Wells Rich Greene, which also held IBM as a client. During his tenure as a graphic designer, his work on IBM brochures, flyers and trademarks ran the gamut from Selectric typewriters to mainframes. “It was amazing to see the depth of their work and the amount of effort they put behind their products,” he said of IBM. McGuggart’s transition from Corporate America to active retirement was seamless.

“When you’re a graphic designer, you’re working for a client, and the problems they have become your problems, and the deadlines become your deadlines. Now, I am the client, and my deadline is the time I want to put into it. It’s a wonderful way to retire,” he said. Why landscapes? “I guess it’s an acquired taste,” he said, a focus he credits to his many trips to England. “England has a tremendous respect for nature and the landscape. … I didn’t even realize I was taking it all in, but I would buy books on landscape and photography, and before I knew it, I was just reading more about landscape and pictures.” McGuggart’s landscape compositions are inspired by Tonalism, a movement by American artists around the turn of the 20th century, and they had a “phenomenal feeling for the land,” he said. During that time, artists began to paint landscape forms with an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist. Tonalism was eventually eclipsed by Impressionism. McGuggart’s exposure to early Tonalist and Impressionist painters and his appreciation for “the unspoiled nature of the North Fork … just kind of coincided,” he said. “Art really teaches you how to see. I actually saw the North Fork through their eyes,” he said, referring to early Tonalist and Impressionist painters. Why the switch from pastels to pencils? “There’s more freedom in pastels, [but] in some ways you can enjoy the restrictions that color pencils have,” he said. “You can’t go over the artwork. It’s not forgiving, like oil painting. I guess it’s more akin to watercolor. Once you put it down, it’s there.” His color pencil drawings may give the illusion of detail, but each composition is about an impression or feeling, rather than a documentation of a particular place.

When he first started to compose landscapes, McGuggart made frequent trips to the North Fork and took photographs and would “come home and interpret the colors and simplify it,” he said. “Artists take pictures for the memory, not to copy.” He tapped into his graphic background to snap well-composed photos. “The graphic design area helps [with] good composition and boldness and colors,” he said. Nowadays, McGuggart does not rely on photography. Sometimes, he observes landscapes and takes mental notes. He also buys old auction catalogs, cuts them up and makes swipe files. “There might be a certain picture where the color is fantastic and I’ll say, ‘Gee, I’d love to use that color scheme, but not 100 percent,’” he said. “I think to be a good artist you have to be inspired by other artists,” he added. ”You take from nature, you take from photography, you take from magazines.” McGuggart usually composes one piece at a time, working in his home studio. His work ranges from 6- x 6-inch compositions to 18 x 24 inches. Many of his works are on exhibit at The South Street Gallery in Greenport. His “Peconic Sundown” was one of 60 works selected from 399 entries for the Art League of Long Island’s “Landscapes: From Metropolis to Arcadia” exhibit at the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills, which runs through May 11. He also will have a composition at the Masters Exhibit at the Huntington Art Council in late June. Locally, his compositions can be viewed at Trapani Art & Frame on Plandome Road. ■

A French chateau for a country club, rolling hills dotted with homes that speak more of British gentry than suburban sprawl, and a storied past, Strathmore Vanderbilt is a neighborhood that takes you back in time. The anchor of this Manhasset community is the Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club, a Gatsbyesque gem built in the early 1900s. Today, the club serves the residents of the 280 homes in the neighborhood, as well as others who are sponsored for
membership. In summer, the pool, tennis courts, restaurant and Friday evening happy hours are powerful magnets. During the holiday season, the wreath-and-ribbon-decked club hosts the annual Eggnog Party, with tuxedos among the hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. In fact, year round, except for a two-month shutdown in the dead of winter, the club is the pulsing heart of the area. The story of the building is as captivating as the neighborhood itself.

The property originally served as a country retreat for the Who’s Who of New York City. In 1914, candy entrepreneur Louis Sherry purchased the property and commissioned a home that was to resemble a cottage of Marie Antoinette’s. In 1923, the estate was sold to newspaper mogul and banker Frank Munsey, who refurbished the home with the vision of creating a Louis XV chateau, replete with a hand-painted mural that still graces the dining room. Munsey, however, never formally occupied the home. He died a bachelor, and the estate attracted the attention of the Vanderbilt family. Graham Fair Vanderbilt acquired the home with 100 acres, providing the perfect backdrop for lawn parties and the over-the-top festivities of the period. After a decade, the punch line to the area’s provenance was the sale of the property to the Levitt family. Yes, William Levitt of Levittown fame. Before Levitt’s foray into mass-produced suburbs, his family’s real-estate development firm, Levitt & Sons, earned a reputation building upper-middle-class homes along the North Shore. Founded by William Levitt’s father, Abraham Levitt, Levitt & Sons sold 600 such homes between 1929 and the mid ‘30s as part of their Strathmore development, a common name he used which included neighborhoods in Manhasset. 28 | MANHASSET MAGAZINE

Strathmore Vanderbilt is more than a neighborhood. It is a slice of history and a way of life. The typical home designed by Alfred Levitt, William’s brother, was a slate-roofed Tudor-style or Georgian center-hall colonial with three or four bedrooms and two to three baths. As The New York Times said in a 1935 article about a model home in North Strathmore, “…it embodies the developers’ ideas of recent trends in construction and design and has been named by them the ‘American’ home.” Among the features, “the lower level is a dance floor, with lighting ‘in the night-club fashion.’” Selling prices ranged from $14,000 to $17,000. Ironically, William Levitt, who is noted and reviled for bringing assembly-line techniques to housing construction after World War II, had a distinct vision for Strathmore Vanderbilt. A gifted salesman, Levitt knew the importance of location and community. His decision to maintain the original French chateau as a resource for residents was part of his marketing strategy.

A recent Times article about Manhasset titled, “A Place on Manhattanites’ Map,” would put a smile on Levitt’s face. The homes, with classic features such as plaster walls, coffered ceilings, arched doorways, brick exteriors and slate roofs, now start at well over $1 million. Many have been updated without compromise to the area’s timeless style. The halfhour train ride to Manhattan, the sense of community and Manhasset’s school district make it quite desirable. According to Camille Dussich, a resident and licensed real estate broker with Douglas Elliman in Manhasset and former vice president of the Strathmore Vanderbilt Civic Association, the market is strong and fast-moving. A recent offering Dussich pointed to is at right, a $2.2 million four-bedroom colonial. “Shangri-La is the word my family uses to describe the neighborhood,” said Dussich, whose three sons graduated from Manhasset High School. “There’s nothing better than dining poolside at the club and watching your children swim with their friends. The emphasis on family living contributes to this little ‘piece of heaven.’” The area attracts young families like the Durante family. Angelic Durante, her husband and two daughters have lived here for four years. Her husband originally wanted to move to the South Shore, but after friends purchased a home in the area, they never looked back. They searched for a year and a half and bought a center-hall colonial. Durante, who will serve on the board at the country club this year, praises the close-knit neighborhood.

“The schools are great, it’s a very caring community,” said Durante. “The club is a godsend. We enjoy walking there, and my daughters participate in activities and even summer camp.” Of his work, Levitt once said: “To be perfectly frank, I’m looking for a little glory, too. It’s only human. I want to build a town to be proud of.” Strathmore Vanderbilt is a testament to his legacy and flair for community planning. ■

Since Frank Castagna bought the property in 1956, the Americana Manhasset has become not only a luxury shopping destination that rivals Madison Avenue and Rodeo Drive, but also a center for philanthropy. “Generosity has always come with the territory,” said Deirdre Costa Major, Americana Manhasset’s president, who, over the past 28 years, literally grew up with the company. “Community involvement is ingrained in our company heritage.”

The most spectacular example of this is the Americana Manhasset’s 21-year partnership with the North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation. Organized by the Partners Council for Women’s Health, the Fall Luncheon and Fashion Show is the biggest event of the fall. Top designers — from Michael Kors, Bottega Veneta, Etro and Max Mara to Oscar de La Renta, Dior, Fendi and Prada — bring their collections to the event’s runway. “The Americana Manhasset has always been unbelievably supportive in so many things that we do,” said Mindy Reade, the foundation’s director of special events. This past September, more than $475,000 was raised for the Katz Women’s Hospitals at LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital and Katz Institute for Women’s Health. Fall also brings the Concours d’Elegance in which more than 200 antique, collectible and simply amazing luxury automobiles compete for awards. One of the premier automotive events on the east coast, the Concours has, for the past three years, named Sunrise Day Camp as its charity of choice. A special place for children age three to 16, Sunrise is the only dedicated full-summer day camp on Long Island for children with cancer. Operated by the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC and set on the Henry Kauffman Campgrounds, 300 acres bordering Nassau and Suffolk counties, the camp is free of charge to children being treated for cancer and their siblings. “The Americana came on board quickly, and have been strong supporters of our camp since its first year of inception,” said Beth Fetner, vice president of agency development for Sunrise Day Camp. Fetner points out that the first year’s effort raised a quarter of a million dollars. “They’ve also supported us by making their own sizable donation, enabling us to build an 8,000-square-foot pavilion at the camp,” she said. Then, of course, there is Champions for Charity. One of the Americana Manhasset’s best-known charitable programs, it benefits more than100 organizations, ranging from hospitals and health and research foundations to local schools.

Each year, shortly after Thanksgiving, Champions marks the start of the holiday season. Shoppers register for a card that allocates 25 percent of their pre-tax purchase to one or more charities of their choice. Over the years, the program has raised more than $7 million for various causes, said Costa Major. Individual shops make their own philanthropic efforts, too. London Jewelers, an Americana Manhasset fixture, designs lines of jewelry to benefit a range of charities. The Circle of Life pin was designed to benefit the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research has a collection, and the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis is the latest beneficiary of these custom designs. “We like to help out in the community, and we especially like to give back,” said London Jewelers President Candy Udell.
In fact, in recent years, as a personal project, Udell has produced her own dog and cat paw designs in gold and silver to benefit the Rescue Paw Foundation. Through this, she has helped rescue more than 3,000 dogs nationwide and place them in shelters in the New York area. “We have saved thousands of animals’ lives, which has been an amazing experience,” she said. Clearly, the Americana Manhasset is far more than a shopping destination. It is both a setting and catalyst for philanthropy. “It is our duty, as it should be with all leading businesses, to give back in a way that is meaningful and consistent,” said John Gutleber, president and CEO of Castagna Realty Co., Inc. “For us it makes perfect sense, and it is simply the right thing to do, to support organizations that improve the quality of life in the communities where we do business.” ■

When Manhasset’s Rebecca Bent compiled her first cookbook in 2004 — Burgers: 50 Recipes Celebrating an American Classic — she approached renowned chefs such as Bobby Flay, Geoffrey Zakarian and Roy Yamaguchi, successfully convincing them to contribute their personal recipes for her book, which was published by Random House. That’s the way this talented woman approaches whatever she undertakes, with a level of impressive boldness, although she says she doesn’t want to be thought of as fearless. “I also get nervous and scared,” she said, “but then I remember how much fun it is once you take that first step.” A first step this year for the Bent family was the decision to home school their three daughters, ages 13, 12 and 7, so that the family could live and travel in Europe. It took six months of planning so that her husband, Bruce Bent II, could handle his financial services business from afar, and for Rebecca to do the same with her consulting business. By her choice, Rebecca went to Rome with the girls three weeks ahead of Bruce. “I wanted to start it by myself,” she said. The family traveled and lived in Italy, Switzerland and France. Another part of the adventure was a onemonth trip in an RV traveling around California. Joining them with another RV were her parents and her brother and his family. “Even though my brother went to the Culinary Institute of America, I did all the cooking,” said Rebecca, who is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute, now the International Culinary Center. Rebecca thinks she was “nominated” for the cooking chores because she handles pressure well. “I gravitate toward winging it,” she said, “and I clean up wmy mess.”

Providing interesting experiences for her children is a hallmark of Rebecca’s approach to parenting. Ten years ago, she decided that her kids “didn’t have enough country in them,” in contrast to her childhood in Maryland, where catching, cooking and eating crabs and fish along the Chesapeake Bay were an important part of her life. “My kids got excited when they saw a squirrel,” she said. She decided to teach her girls how to pick some crabs, 44 | MANHASSET MAGAZINE
ordering them from The Crab Place in Crisfield, Md. Tasting their seasoning, she thought, mine is better than this, and sent some to the owner, Greg Cain. This led to some conversations, and eventually, Rebecca became a partner in the business, today handling marketing, photography and product development. Kiplinger has named the mail-order business the best in the nation for crab cakes. Rebecca’s crab cakes were inspired by her grandmother’s recipe.

Not to be outdone, Bruce (whose father is Bruce R. Bent, the inventor of the world’s first money fund, The Reserve Fund) bought 200 acres of land in Hyde Park upstate to save it from developers. There, he tapped maple trees, built ponds and raised cattle. They sold the ranch this year to someone who could manage it full time. Rebecca thinks she’ll write another cookbook. In addition to Burgers, she is the author of Down at the Shore, now in its second printing, and developed all the recipes for Bottom Line’s The Healing Kitchen, which has achieved over one million dollars in sales. has provided photography for other cookbooks. And, of course, she is a columnist for the Manhasset Press — “Cooking At Home With Rebecca Bent.” Although Rebecca travels extensively, she loves the small-town feel of Manhasset. “This is a walkable town where you know the butcher and the baker.” She says she buys her lamb chops from Kenny at A&F, pasta from Andy at Casa Mia and apple turnovers at Steiners. “Then I work it off at Fred Astaire down the block,” she said. ■

It’s A LAX, LAX, LAX, LAX World Ask anyone in Manhasset who’s involved in either the boys’ or girls’ lacrosse programs, from the PAL level all the way up to the high school level, about what makes them so special, and they’ll tell you that lacrosse is much more than a sport. It’s part of the community’s culture. Ask the school district’s Athletic Director, Jim Amen, who’s been at Manhasset less than a year, or ask Pam Monfort McDonough, who started the women’s team at the high school in 1979. Ask Danielle Gallagher, the current women’s coach who played for McDonough, or Bill Cherry whose boys’teams have won two state championships in the last five years. Or ask his predecessors, Alan Lowe and Bob Rule, two men who coached the boys’high school team together for 32 years. They’ll all agree that lacrosse adds a special quality, a special ambience and a special way of life to the community. “Givebacks,” said Lowe, who began coaching the Indians in 1974, when asked about the uniqueness of Manhasset lacrosse. “There are so many people who stay in our program. Guys who I coached in ’74 and ’75 have come back and are coaching in our youth program. These guys come back, they move back and they give their time in coaching the youth. The kids all know how to play when they come up to the high school.”
To call Manhasset a lacrosse town is an understatement of epic proportions. MANHASSET MAGAZINE | 49

McDonough agreed with Lowe. “It’s seems like there’s a magnet here,” she said. “Alumni strive to get back here. It’s such a compliment to see former players coaching boys and girls in the PAL program.” “The PAL program is phenomenal,”said current boys’coach Cherry. “The kids start playing at a very young age. It has become part of the fabric of the community. It’s an exciting game. It’s a game pretty much anybody can play.” “The parents are very, very supportive of both boys’ and girls’ programs,” he said. We have a booster club. We have a hall of fame organization (in its 26th year). Both donate their time and money. We’ve played down in Maryland and up in Connecticut. They’re very helpful in raising money for anything we need.” One of McDonough’s players who came back was Gallagher. “Danielle was the best player,”said McDonough. “She would fake out her own teammates with her moves on the field. She was our first All-American. She was tenacious, very quick and saw opportunities on the whole field with one glance.” Gallagher, a midfielder who played on the U.S. national team for 20 years and played in four World Cups, became coach in 2006. McDonough left the high school position in 1995 after her teams had won state titles in 1985 and 1988 and still assists with youth teams. Echoing both her coach and Lowe, Gallagher said, “I grew up in Manhasset. There are people that are dedicated and committed to the sport and dedicated to giving back.” 50 | MANHASSET MAGAZINE

“You create a unity and a team culture among the kids, and you hope that you’re teaching life lessons,” she continued. “Those are the things that they’re going to bring into their future. It’s good to see kids being successful on the field. If they’re successful on the field, they’re going to be successful in other things. We’re raising good kids and raising good people.” Gallagher is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as are both Lowe and Rule. Rule, Lowe’s longtime assistant, had similar thoughts. “We prepare our athletes to deal with the kinds of pressure they’ll have to deal with when they’re adults,” he said. “Manhasset is a town that is so success oriented. Manhasset was also one of the first towns to have a program for the younger children.” Rule also feels that lacrosse has helped many students get into the top colleges. “Manhasset has such a good reputation as a producer of quality players that our kids get a better shot at the best schools,” he said. “It gives them an edge. Harvard, for example, has thousands of applicants. They’ve all got good grades and good recommendations. You need something to make yourself standout. Lacrosse is big in the Ivy League.” Like Cherry, Gallagher cited community support as a key. “Parent support is huge, she added. “Every year we go to Maryland. This year we’re going to go up to Massachusetts. It’s good for us to play not only on Long Island. The fact that we get to go and play in other states is great for our kids to experience.”

The history and tradition of lacrosse in Manhasset goes back to 1932 when Jason Stranahan started the first program on Long Island. Stranahan, also in the U.S. Hall of Fame, had a friend who he convinced to start a similar program in Garden City. The teams first met on the field in 1935, and the rivalry is now the oldest continuous lacrosse rivalry in the U.S. Manhasset has won 67 games and lost 57 to Garden City in the rivalry that has been labeled “The Woodstick Classic.” Richie Moran, another Hall of Famer, is credited with revitalizing the men’s program in the ’60’s, leading the Indians to three straight county titles and two Long Island championships. Moran teams were 67-5 in five seasons. Over the years, Manhasset has produced many great men and women’s players. The most famous of all is Jim Brown, the Cleveland Browns NFL great. “In those days,” Cherry said, ”you could pin the stick against your chest. He would just run through people and drop the ball in the cage.” Brown graduated from Manhasset in 1953, and is thought to have been even more skilled at lacrosse than he was in football. Amen, a member of the sport’s Long Island Metro Hall of Fame (as is McDonough) has worked in the district only since August, but knows Manhasset lacrosse well. “Manhasset is a town where many of the adults who live here now have played lacrosse and perpetuated the sport with their children,” he said. The new director has had a long career on the island as a coach, including a state championship year at Bethpage in 1996, when his team beat Manhasset twice. “It was always exciting and challenging,” said Amen of his many games against the Indians. “I have great respect for the Manhasset programs and for what they have accomplished. I cannot wait to watch both the boys’ and girls’ teams up close and personal this season.” ■

When I start my own country, I’m going to ask the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer (and their Junior Coalition) to run it. Since it began in 1997, this amazing, all-volunteer community group has raised nearly three million dollars, distributing it to fund innovative research, increase awareness through education, and provide support services to those with breast cancer and related diseases. The Coalition was formed when women from the Munsey Park Women’s Club approached other women’s clubs in Manhasset, seeking to join forces to do something significant in the battle against breast cancer. Dorothy Forte, one of the founders, says she made it her job to make sure the organization was off to a proper start as a separate not-for-profit, writing bi-laws and mission statements, as well as planning fundraisers. She says that the first few dinners, which they call Ladies Night Out, didn’t even have a journal. But they learned, and the 17th annual event in October of 2013, held at Leonard’s in Great Neck, brought out 500 women, all ready to open their purses to support the work of the organization. Funding research was the original focus of the group. “We gave to programs that were looking into areas that affected our constituents,” says Forte. So, when they saw that there seemed to be an increase in metastatic breast cancer, the research committee chose a project at the Research Foundation at Stony Brook University that was investigating metastatic breast cancer stem cells. Other recipients of research grants include North Shore-LIJ Health System, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NYU Langone Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College. The Manhasset Coalition is a dynamic organization, and one of the reasons for their continued success appears to be their responsiveness to needs in the community. In 2003, the Junior Coalition was founded, a program for teenage girls in the ninth to 12th grades. Forte said they wanted this to be a meaningful experience for the young women, “not just something they would put on their resumes.� Members of the Junior Coalition are educated about breast cancer, and the girls are expected to do their own fundraising and community service. Laura Hull, a Manhasset resident for 23 years, had been toying with the idea of joining the Coalition when they contacted her. Her daughter was entering the ninth grade, and they were asking her to become
a Junior Coalition advisor. Hull took on the job with two other women, with the commitment that they would see the group through their four years of high school. Educating the young women about breast cancer is the first step. A social worker from the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program attends the first meeting, providing information about the disease and discussion of healthy choices. The young women then move into community service. Last year, 30 platters of holiday cookies, baked by the girls, were prepared for families dealing with breast cancer. Platters of cookies also were brought to the palliative care unit at North Shore Hospital for the nurses and families of the patients. The students also plant flower gardens for those patients, and the senior girls are responsible for a community memorial garden at the Manhasset train station. Like the adult organization, fundraising is an important component to the work of the Junior Coalition. In 2013, the Junior Coalition gave $15,000 to the Adelphi program for education and $10,000 to North Shore-LIJ.

“By the time they’re seniors,” says Hull, “the girls have seen it’s not just about the pink dresses; it’s the ravages of the illness.” Lynn Minutillo recalls hearing about the Manhasset Breast Cancer Coalition when she moved into the community 1999. “I remember thinking that I would someday like to become involved, especially because my mother had been actively going through treatment for her diagnosis of breast cancer,” Minutillo says. She attended many events. Then, in December of 2007, her mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer. She placed a call to Forte, who was then vice president of Outreach. “I was so thankful for the information and calm Dorothy brought to my world, and also that of my family,” she says. Today, she is co-chair of the Outreach committee. The Coalition’s outreach program offers direct services to 64 | MANHASSET MAGAZINE
women and their families, and education regarding breast cancer. Last year, they provided financial assistance to 74 people in Manhasset and surrounding areas with rent money, babysitting and transportation. Barbara Buckley, a resident of Douglaston, volunteers with the Coalition as a care coach, consulting with women who have been diagnosed. Her group provides advice (without specific recommendations) on doctors and hospitals, and helps the patient sort out her options. They provide books and specialty binders to keep all the insurance papers and appointments straight. “In my several years as a care coach,” says Buckley, “I have driven women to chemotherapy, arranged special exercises for them, had a wig-maker come to the house to do a private fitting after chemotherapy and hair loss, and provided food to families when a patient is going through therapy. This is so rewarding and so personal.”

Sweet concern: The Jr. Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer with the holiday cookies they prepared for delivery to outreach recipients.
The newest effort of the Coalition is to help women with other cancers through their Extended Cancer Care Program. The list of accomplishments of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition is impressive. A look at their web site — www.manhassetbreastcancer.org — gives the picture of how much this determined group of women has contributed to the well-being of all women. “Tomorrow it might be me, my daughter, my best friend,” says Buckley. “It helps to know that there are other women and organizations such as MWCABC that will be there to help.” Her thoughts are echoed by Forte, whose two sisters, maternal grandmother, two maternal aunts and six other family members have had breast cancer. “I truly feel through the work we do we have made the lives of so many just a little bit easier,” says Forte. “Will we ever find a cure for this nasty disease?” ■

Artists In Residence One glance at Michael Sansone’s Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art classroom and you immediately sense the creative energy blossoming among his students at Manhasset High School. A bust of Sansone, created by former student Savannah Vaults, who is now studying engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, is just one of the many creations reflecting the skill nurtured in his class. Sansone’s students, a generation raised in the digital age, are taught based on a methodology that harks back to the 16th century. The class uses the Atelier Method, a technique of fine art instruction modeled after the private European art studio schools popular during the 15th to 19th centuries. Derived from the French word for artist’s studio, atelier training is centered on an artist who closely mentors a small number of students in a classic style of art. “Learning how to make art is a complex issue,” said Sansone. “We work from an abbreviated form of the Atelier Method, which is based on developing a strong foundation with skills in drawing, painting and sculpture.” According to Sansone, the original method takes many years to accomplish, and it is based on training and dedication not unlike mastering music or athletics. Manhasset’s extensive program offers students electives and training to meet the demands of AP Studio Art, a rigorous class that provides the opportunity to create a portfolio of college-level work in 2-D Design, Drawing or Photography. Sansone is building creative foundations and portfolios for Manhasset’s young talent. Students dedicate most of the year developing pieces in three categories: a concentration which is a body of work with connecting elements and related themes; breadth pieces that demonstrate conceptual and technical approaches; and quality that needs to exemplify the student’s understanding and engagement of their work. At the end of the year, 24 pieces of art are submitted to the College Board. Portfolios are graded on a scale from one to six, a grade of three or higher is considered passing. Based on College Board data from the last five years, Manhasset performs extremely well, with 99 percent of students earning a three or better, and 58 percent earning a four or higher.

The majority of students work toward taking AP Art in junior year. The art sequence begins freshman year with Studio Art. Students are introduced to the elements and principles of design with a focus on color theory, values and basic skills. Sophomore year, students who are recommended by their art teacher move on to Pre-AP Studio Art. Typically, about 25 students are recommended for this class. According to Sansone, Pre-AP preps students to reach the level of competence to be successful in AP Studio Art. In the latter part of the year, students choose their concentration. Sansone spends quite a bit of time working through student ideas for concentrations. “I advise students to keep their concentrations simple,” he said. “Most students find choosing one topic difficult. Considerable time is invested in discussing past concepts. I had one student who chose to juxtapose issues of war and how it affects social systems.” To enrich the program, the district provides three hours of figure drawing, which is drawing the naked human form, one day a week after school. Participation is required for AP students. Figure drawing has always been the gold standard for artistic training, helping artists understand form, structure and foreshortening. Regarding Manhasset’s program, Dr. Anthony Ambrogio, administrator for the Arts & Human Resources, who is a graduate of the Julliard School, commends the entire Manhasset community for its continued support of the arts. “This is truly a special program, and the most intensive art program in a secondary setting I know of on Long Island, and possibly all of New York,” said Ambrogio. “Many of our students have gone on to study at Cooper Union, Pratt and Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. We begin teaching the elements and principles of design, in an age-appropriate manner, at the elementary level.” After senior year, students who wish to continue studying art move on to Advanced Studio Art where they are exposed to a range of different mediums and projects, or they can opt for independent study. When asked about his experience taking AP Art, senior Bobby Moore, who will be attending art school in the fall as a photography major, said, “I wouldn’t be the photographer I am today if I hadn’t taken AP Studio Art. The class taught me how to think like an artist.” Junior Lindsay Rule, who had an interest in the program since freshman year, added, “This is my hardest AP due to the tremendous amount of work. I’ve been pushed to work in different mediums and methods and have learned about color and values. I see everything in the world differently now.” Sansone attended The School of Visual Arts and Queens College, where he earned both a B.A. and M.A. in Art Education. His background includes working as a commercial illustrator for 10 years. He also studied under Ateliers at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Long Island Academy of Fine Art. He enjoys the challenge of teaching art to students who were raised on a steady diet of instant gratification. He believes anyone can learn to draw, but one has to have the will, desire and work ethic. He prides himself that students are learning to engage in a long-term process that includes following steps and transitioning concepts to fruition. “These students are learning delayed gratification and persistence,” said Sansone. “They are using their hands and manipulating tools. These are valuable skills that they can use the rest of their lives.” ■

Science Those driving along North Plandome Road are often impressed by the dramatic view of Manhasset Bay, but typically, only locals have any idea about what’s going on in the old Gold Coast mansion on top of the hill on the other side of the road. This 107-year-old, 22-room building has been the home of the thriving Science Museum of Long Island since 1973, educating thousands of area youngsters from nursery school age through college with all sorts of hands-on experiences. Tour the mansion, and you’ll find classrooms and a chemistry lab, as well as a live-animal wing with tortoises, rabbits, mice, chinchillas and other small creatures, along with a reptile room. Under development are a computer lab and a room that will simulate a cave.

Out back, the barn has been pressed into service, too. “We have our paleontology exhibit in it, and the plan is to put a butterfly conservatory upstairs,” said staff member Cara O’Donnell. “We’re going to put in an artificial marine biology ecosystem in one of the garages and enclose it so that the kids can study marine biology in comfort during bad weather.” The history of the museum (first organized as the North Shore Junior Science Museum) goes back to 1962, when Sands Point resident Doris Leonard placed an ad in a local paper that said, “Anyone interested in organizing a hands-on science museum on Long Island is invited to the home of Doris Leonard.” Since then, it’s estimated that the museum has hosted almost 800,000 visitors. About 20 area residents accepted the invitation, including co-founders Carole Aronson (Great Neck), Celia LoPinto and Ruth Nedbor (Leonard’s neighbors) and Arlene Travis (Kings Point). Before a permanent home was found, many museum activities were conducted in storefronts and other locations. Today, the museum features programs for schools and families, birthday parties, opportunities for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to earn achievements, mini-camps during school holidays, travel programs and an eight-week summer camp. The popular summer camp features a different theme each week, from dinosaurs to ecosystems, animals to space and flight. Kids can attend for a little as one week, or come for the full eight weeks. There are age groups from nursery school up through middle school.

Were it not for Nassau County’s purchase when the original owner died in 1967, the 36-acre site, including Leeds Pond, would have been turned into a 50-home development, blocking some views of the bay. Now, the county leases the facilities to the museum for $1 a year. Other parts of the property, which make up the Leeds Pond Preserve, are accessible to all. The current director of the museum is biologist John T. Tanacredi, who is also a professor at Molloy College. Dr. Tanacredi was appointed about two years ago, succeeding his late colleague, John Loret. Dr. Tanacredi’s association with the museum spans 30 years, but he gives tremendous credit to Dr. Loret, who served as director for 26 years. “I knew John for a long time, and he was a very dynamic fellow,” said Dr. Tanacredi who wrote several books with Dr. Loret. “The majority of the things that we do today are the things that John started.” Dr. Tanacredi says there’s a “science renaissance” underway, and that the museum is breaking out of being, what he called, “one of the best-kept secrets on Long Island.”Today, the goal is to expand, with more public programming throughout Long Island.

The museum also offers free lectures for adults, held in the recently restored caretaker’s house, now open as a visitors’ center and gift shop. The 7 p.m. series, called Wednesday Night Lite, has programs coming up on April 30, June 4 and June 25. “There’s a lot going on here,” said O’Donnell. “People don’t know, for example, that we have a program for nursery school children. The kids come here once a week for an hour and a half and do simple experiments. It’s geared toward uncovering their interest and curiosity in science and turning that into a passion for science.” ■

Shutterfly and the Apple Store are my competitors, but I think this business is more personable because I interact with the customers, and they can tell me what they exactly want. I think that is why this store is still here. Would you ever open another store? The more I think about it, the less I want to. When customers come here, they ask for me. Yes, there’s another new trend in workouts that’s taken off to new heights. Aerial fitness is literally swinging out of control and offered right here in Manhasset at The Fitness Loft, up one flight from T.G.I. Friday’s at 1447 Northern Blvd. There’s no clowning around at this circus-style body-training class called “Aerial Silks,” which can be taught in a small group of six by a professional aerialist. To find out what it’s all about, I lined up a private introductory class. I was definitely up for the challenge, but also a bit nervous to get up there and test my strength. “Aerial classes require so much upper body strength, you need to utilize your lats, traps, your entire core — just about everything,” said Maryann Stevens, professional aerialist and aerial arts instructor for the past year. “The goal is to make it look effortless and graceful; when I’m performing, I can’t look like I’m muscling my way up to the top.” MANHASSET MAGAZINE | 93
Let me give it to you straight: I’ve always been a fitness enthusiast, but not a daredevil, running to the latest obstacle course race like Spartan or Tough Mudder. I loathe roller coasters, never ran a marathon, and nobody could pay me enough to sky dive. So, before I committed to hanging myself from red silk fabrics suspended 12 feet from the ceiling, I had to do research. YouTube has myriad aerial arts performances online. I was intrigued. This was something I had to try. What does a beginner need to be successful at this class? “A lot of balance, a lot of core and body awareness is needed,”explained Maryann. “Gymnastics and dance are the closest forms of exercise that will train your body for this.” Maryann is an aerial artist who teaches flying trapeze, tilts, hammocks and hanging hoops. She also works at IFLY, a recreational flying-trapeze school here on Long Island.

When my private aerialist instructor got up in the air to demonstrate how to manipulate these 12-foot-high sleek red silk fabrics, she made it look effortless. With her posture straight as a stick, she went on to show me how to twist, climb, and hang upside down. Sure, it’s easy for her — she’s a former dancer and as disciplined as they come. “Now it’s your turn,” she smiled, as I shook in my own skin. Maryann’s encouraging smile made me step forward. “Think lifting while squeezing your glutes, suck in your core, and always keep your posture straight.” Upper body strength and steady posture are of utmost importance for aerial artists. Every inch, every ounce of body muscle is used every second, right down to your fingertips (which you need for grasping to keep yourself safely airborne).

After a 15-minute warm-up, Maryann went through single-foot locks, which require wrapping the silks in a figure-8 knot around your foot for sturdy support. Nothing about these tasks was easy. Maryann was with me all the way, spotting me at every breath. I learned splits, falls, rolls twists and the candycane-roll trick, making this the hardest, most challenging workout I’ve ever tried. She helped me achieve a split in mid-air — something I never could do on the ground. Pull-overs had me bringing my legs up and through the silk into a resting/ hanging pike, as Maryann describes it.

How does someone become as good as Maryann at aerial arts? It takes time and dedication. She currently trains at STREB (a school founded by Elizabeth Streb) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It includes an Extreme Action Company that embraces the pursuit of human flight. “It’s a lab for action mechanics,” says Maryann. There, she studies under Bobby Hedgelin-Taylor. “He is an incredible seasoned performer/actor/ choreographer.” Maryann also has attained certification as a behavioral therapist for special-needs children. “I engage them along with a parent or caregiver in aerial hammocks classes to increase overall strength through movements on the silks and by playing coordination-based games,” she said. “It’s a lot about knowing and being aware of your body in the air, because you’re no longer grounded, only with beautiful pieces of silk that bounce up and down,” said Maryann. “Once you’ve learned the techniques, it does become much easier.” ■

Our Man On The Bay That Kenneth Weigand is the Commodore of the Port Washington Yacht Club is no surprise. The club is, after all, on Manhasset Bay. And all things Manhasset are deeply woven into the fiber of Commodore Weigand. Ken’s family moved to Manhasset in 1949, and he’s a product of Manhasset schools, where he played basketball during high school. This Vietnam veteran, who once owned restaurants in Manhattan, now works in sales. His wife, Jackie, also grew up in Manhasset, but the two did not know each other back then. It took the wedding of Port Washington’s John and Adrienne Thomson, Jr., to get the couple together, and the rest…well, is history. Their four children and nine grandchildren (all girls) live locally. Their children grew up at the club, and after marriage stayed around. If you’re out on the bay, don’t be surprised to see the 39-foot Sea Ray, Our Escape, with nine blond little girls aboard. Jackie and Ken are a perfect team to carry on the rich history of PWYC,

and were delighted when asked to take a leadership role in the club where they’ve been members since 1983. Ken’s face tells it all when he speaks of family, kids and grandkids, his smile is as bright as the sun. And it is just about the same when he talks about the yacht club. He wants to continue to emphasize its family-friendly nature, and bring fun activities to old and new members. Take, for example, the junior sailing program. The 2014 Junior Sailing Director is from South Africa, and brings years of experience sailing and racing to the program. The Opti Racing coach and the Laser Racing coach are both from Ireland, and come with outstanding sailing experience. For kids 14 and up, there’s the big-boat keel program, as well as team racing. The full crew of 10 instructors, under the leadership of Committee Chair George Catallo, is destined to make an impact this year.

Aside from sailing, there’s a swim team for the juniors (they won the league championship last year), the pool and tennis courts. The club also has a partnership with the neighboring Long Island Science Museum, art classes for kids (“Abrakadoodle”) and a water trampoline. For members of all ages, there is kayaking, paddleboard and Ideal 18s. There is, of course, also serious work to be done. In addition to his responsibilities as Commodore, Ken is a member of the Town of North Hempstead Waterfront Advisory Committee, whose purpose is to advise various agencies and businesses. Typically, the committee reviews dock permits, suggests a mooring plan and recommends the positioning of transient moorings. Recently, the committee developed a brochure to promote Manhasset Bay, detailing the anchorages, as well as the numerous marine services and restaurants within walking distance of the water. For Ken and Jackie, the PWYC is a wonderful place to express their enthusiasm and passion for what they hold dear: family, friends and the waterfront of Manhasset Bay. ■

After-Dinner Time Travel
I was speaking to a class of college students about food. Have you ever heard of Crepes Suzette? No hands were raised. How about zabaione? Nothing. Soufflés? A couple of hands went up. Ah, the classic desserts of old. Have they faded into near non-existence? The answer is no, at least not in Manhasset, where in less than a quarter mile stretch on Northern Boulevard three venerable restaurants still keep these wonderful desserts alive: Stressa prepares soufflés, Café Continental whips up zabaione and La Coquille sends up flames with Crepes Suzette.
So far, I’ve had Stressa’s chocolate soufflé (made with Callebaut semisweet Belgian chocolate) and Grand Marnier soufflé. Yet to be tried are their raspberry and vanilla soufflés. The individual dessert comes hot in a ramekin, and is served with a corresponding cold sauce and real whipped cream. After pouring some sauce into the center of the soufflé and finishing it off with a dollop of whipped cream, the waiter leaves behind the sauce and whipped cream just in case you want more. Yes. At these Manhasset restaurants, you can return to the days of classic, elegant desserts. The soufflés are prepared by owner Giorgio Meriggi, who learned more than half a century ago while working in Switzerland. The soufflé was invented in France in the late 18th century. I grew up with the false assumption that any loud noise would cause the puffed-up cake to fall. Apparently failure is a matter of mistakes made by a cook, perhaps too much or too little heat. Meriggi’s soufflés are always perfect. The Marriotti family took over Café Continental in 1986 (the restaurant was established in 1964) and has always served zabaione, a dessert from the Piedmont region of Italy. Zabaione is made the traditional way, with egg yolks, sugar and Marsala wine.

The mixture is whisked over low heat, and when they see it getting creamier, it is removed from the heat, placed over a pot of ice water and whisked more. This procedure makes it light and airy and very delicious. It is served at the restaurant hot or cold with fresh strawberries. The tale that owner Michael Marriotti tells about the origins of the dish is somewhat suspect, but it is delightfully Italian and needs to be repeated here. As the story goes, back in the 1500s, a Franciscan monk, Brother Pasquale DeBaylon, was hearing that the women in the district were complaining that their men-folk weren’t virile enough. He invented this dish to remedy the situation and was made a saint because of it. The French call him San Bajon, and ultimately the dish became zabaione. Perhaps there’s some truth in the virility claim — remember Rocky Balboa downing all those eggs?

Farther east on Northern Boulevard is La Coquille, where Crepes Suzette is a dramatic way to end the meal, as the dish is prepared tableside. To make the sauce for the crepes, three kinds of liqueur are added to a mixture of caramelized sugar, butter and orange juice, cognac, Cointreau and Grand Marnier. With each addition of liqueur the dish bursts into flame and the alcohol gets cooked out. The neatly folded crepes are swished in the sauce and served to the eagerly anticipating diners.
There are stories surrounding the origins of Crepes Suzette, but they’re not as racy as Michael Marriotti’s zabaione story. One version says that famed French chef Henri Charpentier invented it by accident when as an assistant waiter in Paris in 1894, he accidentally set a sauce on fire when serving dessert to the Prince of Wales, and the resulting deliciousness was named for a girl in the prince’s entourage named Suzette. Another version is that in 1897, French actress Suzanne Reichenberg, who went by the name Suzette, played a maid who served crepes on stage. For each performance, the crepes were provided by the owner of Restaurant Marivaux who set them on fire to amuse the audience and to keep the crepes warm for the cast. Giovanni Palumbo has been making crepes for nearly 50 years, first at the Ritz in Piccadilly Street in London, and since 1975 at La Coquille. He says that whenever someone orders the dessert and others see the show, they decide they would like some too. ■
