1.

UNDERSTANDING the importance of the transversal


In geometry, parallel lines are lines in a plane which do not meet; that is, two lines in a plane that do not intersect or touch each other at any point are said to be parallel. By extension, a line and a plane, or two planes, in three-dimensional Euclidean space that do not share a point are said to be parallel. However, two lines in three-dimensional space which do not meet must be in a common plane to be considered parallel; otherwise they are called skew lines. Parallel planes are planes in the same three-dimensional space that never meet. 1.

ANALYSIS urban parallels


Studio BSHKNLPPW&UBK pays attention to personal behavior and interaction in and with public space and questions the conventional production of urban space. Henri Lefebvre defines urban space as a depiction of society. Social groups or milieus (traditional, criticalcreative, senior, young, etc.) often exist parallelly in the same city, have different lifestyle, based on values, family, ethic, educational and professional background. Each individual respectively each social group experiences and uses urban space differently. (Sub-)cultural, marginalized or interest groups, political activists, neighborhood associations often appropriate public spaces for their own needs and thus create their own socio-spacial environment in parallels with other. BSHKNLPPWUBK‘s challenge at OSSA is to define socio-spacial parallels in the city of Zakopane and create a common ground that invites to step out of one’s comfort zone, interact with urban space and other citizens.

Studio BSHKNLPPW&UBK knows about the dilemma you may face: Studying architecture does not leave enough time and energy to pursue any other interest. Extracurricular workshops, such as OSSA should be fun and offer the possibly to develop unforeseen talents and interests. Naming our studio „ […] & UBK“, referring to the German Unbekannt or unknown, has been a conscious decision in order to allow ourselves to live all your parallel interests. Architecture is a process not a product. Of course, this process might result into a product, such as a building, that some see as architecture. This might not be intended, what Studio BSHKNLPPW&UBK is aiming for is to develop on several interests with no particular goal in mind. The process matters and this is what to architect means. As Kanye West taught us at his spontaneous visit at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, we really do believe that the world can be saved through design, and everything needs to actually be “architected. Therefore, who else can be as free as an architect? Let’s do it.

unbuilt environmental plane Zakopane unites the landscape - the mountains as a metaphysical space of contemplation, and the built environment - the historical mountain village as a touristic attraction. built environmental plane Architecture from different centuries and styles coexists in Zakopane. Alpine architecture, the famous Zakopane style and various imitations of it depict the local architecture. Parallelly one can find contemporary universal architecture and urban space in form of globalized shops along the main pedestrian zone. social plane Two different universes collide in Zakopane - the one of the locals, and the one of the tourists. The one cannot exist without the other. Together they create the unique social atmosphere of Zakopane. culturral plane In Zakopane traditionalism meets consumerism. Global franchises, food and mainstream music meet local hand-made products and culture. Local culture is not being experienced authentically but consumed. Even the Tatra mountains have been transformed from a temple of nature to a touristic attraction with an entrance fee. economical plane Zakopane appeals to tourists because of the local culture and landscape. The inhabitants have artificially preserved their historical customs and traditions in order to attract more tourists.Â

Zakopane consists of different planes (physical, architectural, social, economical, cultural) that are defined in the space-time-existence. Each plane contains many parallel lines. The existence of selected parallels on a particular plane can be proved by drawing a transversal. The mathematical definition materializes into series of urban interventions in form of tubes that visualize the parallels of Zakopane and connect them through a transversal in terms of content.

PARALLELS


This work proves the parallelism between the built and the unbuilt environment as part of the physical space. To find out if this parallelism exists, we prove that the two parallels are crossed and connected with the same transversals. In order to show that the connection is much deeper we except geographical and physical transversals like the river, the street and bridges. We have chosen two places where the river crosses the same street, and where a paradox between the two environments exists. At the first place we see the nature but hear the city. At the second we see the city but hear the nature. The pipe is transformed into two city cameras, which focus our attention on the visible aspects of a place and parallelly combine with an acoustic situation of a place creating a unique experience. The Paradox of seeing the city and hearing natural sounds proves the parallelity between built and unbuilt environment.

LOCAL AND GLOBAL TRADITIONS

PARALLELS


Everything in this world evolves and changes through the time. New things appear constantly in our life due to global progress and towns are not an exception. However, historical memory of people and affection of a human to their routes do not disappear. Our parallels represent Traditional and Modern phenomena in life of Zakopane. To prove the parallelism of our lines we have created a transversal which also combines them. Similar objects are merged, but the tube as a transversal underlines the difference between the parallels. Externally similar objects can provide different perceptions: touch, taste, sound and others. In our transversals we have focused on the first two: touch and taste. Tactile sensation is represented by a pipe with two gloves inside: one made of wool and the other made of rubber, which gives people an opportunity to explore the parallels with a help of touch. That is the place where these two phenomena meet and exist in a harmony. Taste sensation is represented by a tube with a jelly plait inside that gradually mixes with a one made of cheese. Two tasty parallels create one object and underline their similarity even though they are so different in taste.Â

In Zakopane you can observe different styles of architecture. The commercialized main street Kuprowki represents the collision and coexistence of an universal (globalized contemporary) and local (historical) architecture. The ground level of the building with well-prospering dynamic shops and the neglected historical upper part build an architectural collage. Different photo collages visualize the contrast between these two parallelly existing architectural phenomena by filtering out the one from the other.

CASHFLOW: EARNING AND SPENDING

PARALLELS


Spending money is at the same time earning money. The only difference is which perspective one looks from. Two vectors on the same position that have two different directions are parallel. Nowadays almost everything can be bought. One buys memories, free time or souvenirs. One pays to relax. Money flow allows to develop Zakopane and tourism is part of the city‘s tradition. An installation works only if one interacts with someone else. It always works the same way, no matter on which side of the installation one is. The thesis is so universal that it fits in the context automatically in every touristic city where it is placed.
