by Tina Lloyd, ANTSHE President ANTSHE was formed by dedicated educational professionals and students that wanted change for the non- traditional student. They envisioned higher educational institutions that would meet the needs of non-traditional students and not discriminate against them. This vision is becoming a reality on many campuses throughout the nation. We are pleased to see institutions of higher education becoming more aware of the uniqueness of the nontraditional student. However, there is more work to be done. We are finding that non-traditional students still face issues of child care, finances, and housing. These are issues that ANTSHE recognizes as obstacles to the non-traditional student educational goals. ANTSHE remains committed to advocating for better services for the non-traditional student. Currently the board of directors is working on resources for non-traditional services. We have several services available for institutions of higher education and students. We are now offering an inspiring book that contains success stories of nontraditional students. This is a great resource for students to stay encouraged and complete their goals. The proceeds will be used to establish a need based scholarship. We need your help with this program by submitting your story and purchasing the booklet.

help assist you. It is called the “Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Building A NonTraditional Student Organization”. The biggest obstacle facing students today is finances. We now have a resource to help assist the membership. We have researched over 30,000 scholarship data bases and have complied the data in a user friendly CD. This CD takes the user to the scholarship application and criteria. This is a special program offered to institutional and organizational members. This resource is priceless to students who struggle to go to school and support their families. We are working on more exciting programs this year. We are looking forward to serving the adult learning community in better and more efficient ways! Join us in our 10th year anniversary celebration at Oklahoma State University on March 23-25, 2007. SEE YOU THEN!
Throughout the years we have had a lot of questions about how to establish, run and keep a nontraditional student group alive. We have a resource to

National ANTSHE Nontraditional Student Recognition Week November 5– 11, 2006 by M.J. Giammaria, Non-Traditional Student Appreciation Week is the first full week of November. This year it runs from 11/05/06 through 11/11/06. If you are an officer or committee chairperson of your school’s non-trad organization, what can you do to publicize the accomplishments / activities, past and present, celebrating the non-traditional student population to an international audience? ANTSHE has an answer for you! Submit the non-trad “story” of your school/organization along with captioned photos of your events honoring and recognizing this fastgrowing population of students. If
chosen, the information you provide is posted on the ANTSHE website for the world to see. Seven schools will be recognized on the website, along with awarding of certificates of appreciation to proudly display. Check out the links on the ANTSHE website to see what the three schools honored this past year accomplished. The deadline for submission, via electronic mail, to the ANTSHE webmaster is 10/13/06 at 12:00 midnight Eastern Standard Time.
ANTSHE State Representative Program In in an effort to increase membership and make information more available on a local level, ANTSHE is excited to announce its State Rep. program. ANTSHE will appoint (by nomination) one individual to represent us within their respective state. Having one “go to” person within each state allows for a more centralized local contact and better collaboration with our membership officer. If you are interest in serving in the capacity please contact our membership officer or email our webmaster. If you are selected to serve as a state rep. you get a free institutional membership for your school as well as other perks! Check it out here!

Motivation
Brainstorming
Motivation is one of the most difficult tasks for leaders. Motivation is not something a leader can give to others. Members give motivation to themselves. Listening is a key to motivating others.
Brainstorming is a process of formulating a list of ideas and suggestions. There are some ground rules for Brainstorming. Remember spontaneity and outrageous ideas often yield the best solutions.

I am currently formulating a project concerning distance learning and ANTSHE. I know that there are ANTMany Nontrads use SHE members in convendistance Learning to fit their hectic life sched- tional degree programs, but ules there may be more in distance education programs.
The goal is to produce a directory of legitimate distance education degree programs so that adult, nontraditional students won’t be tempted by the “diploma mills.” Keep looking for more information on this exciting project.
