PERMANENT MISSION OF AUSTRALIA TO THE UN A BIT OF HISTORY There are two types of internship programs run by the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York; the UN General Assembly (UNGA) internship and an ad hoc internship depending on the work of the Mission each year.

A BIT OF HISTORY The Permanent Mission of Australia to the United Nations in Geneva offers internship opportunities, primarily on human rights and disarmament issues.

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT A BIT OF HISTORY ​The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE A BIT OF HISTORY The International Court of Justice is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It settles disputes between states in accordance with international law and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues.

PERMANENT COURT OF ARBITRATION A BIT OF HISTORY Established in 1899 to facilitate arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution between states, the PCA has developed into a modern, multi-faceted arbitral institution perfectly situated to meet the evolving dispute resolution needs of the international community.

INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL FOR LAW OF THE SEA A BIT OF HISTORY The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent judicial body established by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It has jurisdiction over any dispute concerning the interpretation or application of the Convention, and over all matters specifically provided for in any other agreement which confers jurisdiction on the Tribunal. Disputes relating to the Convention may concern the delimitation of maritime zones, navigation, conservation and management of the living resources of the sea, protection and preservation of the marine environment and marine scientific research.

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA (ICTY) A BIT OF HISTORY The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is a United Nations court of law dealing with war crimes that took place during the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990’s. Since its establishment in 1993, it has irreversibly changed the landscape of international humanitarian law and provided victims an opportunity to voice the horrors they witnessed and experienced. In its precedent-setting decisions on genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, the Tribunal has shown that an individual’s senior position can no longer protect them from prosecution.

SPECIAL TRIBUNAL FOR LEBANON A BIT OF HISTORY The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is a tribunal of international characte applying Lebanese criminal law to carry out the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for 14 February 2005 assassination of Rafic Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister, and the deaths of 21 others, as well as those responsible for connected attacks.

INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND A BIT OF HISTORY The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 190 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.

WORLD BANK SCHOLARSHIP A BIT OF HISTORY The ANU College of Law with the World Bank Group have developed a scholarship program for a student in the LL.B. (Honours) or J.D. to undertake a fellowship with the World Bank Groups Integrity Special Litigation Unit.

WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION A BIT OF HISTORY The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.

ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES A BIT OF HISTORY The Organization of American States is the world’s oldest regional organization, dating back to the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington, D.C., from October 1889 to April 1890. Today, the OAS brings together all 35 independent states of the Americas and constitutes the main political, juridical, and social governmental forum in the Hemisphere. In addition, it has granted permanent observer status to 69 states, as well as to the European Union (EU).

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH A BIT OF HISTORY Human Rights Watch is an independent international organization that works as part of a vibrant movement to uphold human dignity and advance the cause of human rights for all. Human Rights Watch conducts regular, systematic investigations of human rights abuses around the world. At any given time we are actively researching, reporting and advocating for change in more than 90 countries.

INTERNATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION A BIT OF HISTORY Founded in 1947, the International Bar Association (IBA) is the world's largest organisation of law societies, bar associations, law firms and individual lawyers. The IBA is involved with cutting edge issues affecting the international legal community and as an intern you can become involved in the work of the Association.

INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE UNIFICATION OF PRIVATE LAW (UNIDROIT) A BIT OF HISTORY UNIDROIT is an intergovernmental organization whose objective is to harmonize international private law across countries through uniform rules, international conventions, and the production of model laws, sets of principles, guides and guidelines.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS (ICRC) A BIT OF HISTORY The International Committee of the Red Cross is a humanitarian organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. State parties to the Geneva Convention of 1949 and its Additional Protocols of 1977 and 2005 have given the ICRC a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts.

CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW A BIT OF HISTORY Since 1989, CIEL has used the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights, and ensure a just and sustainable society. With offices in Washington, DC, and Geneva, Switzerland, CIEL’s team of attorneys, policy experts, and support staff works to provide legal counsel and advocacy, policy research, and capacity building across our three program areas: Climate & Energy, Environmental Health, and People, Land, & Resources.

WOMEN’S INITIATIVES FOR GENDER JUSTICE A BIT OF HISTORY The Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice is an international women's rights organisation that supports legal actions against gender violence through the International Criminal Court and peace processes.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS A BIT OF HISTORY The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent, non-profit organisation promoting interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia. The institute arranges programs of lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other discussions, and sponsors research and publications.
