FROM THE PRESIDENT A cheerful winter smile to you all! I hope you’re finding a cosy spot to paint.

Watercolour is an ever-challenging art. Here’s a winter tale: I submitted a painting for an exhibition recently and was “unselected”. Bother! That was one of my best efforts to date! Then I thought back to school days when I hoped to win the 50 yards hurdles th and was pipped, when I came 24 in geography after colouring my maps of Spain so perfectly, when having Joanna Paul, Rozelle Pharazyn and Rosalind Kirkcaldie in our art class meant no one else rated – ever! (All became professionals in the art world in later life.) And then I laughed! Fortunately, time has given me a bigger picture. Most of us who have plucked up the courage to submit paintings for exhibitions have felt that dagger-in-the-heart when the ‘unselected’ notice arrives. It’s a moment to take a deep breath, stay brave, mix and chat with fellow artists, listen to feedback, learn about what makes for success, work on improving, then focus on the next opportunity.

The moral, to quote Alfred: 'Don't get hung up if you're not hung up!'

Our outdoor painting mornings continue to grow in popularity. 100% for loyalty and endurance goes to Phil Dickson, tutor at our recent MPG, for standing his ground in the southerly blast on Mt. Victoria (south side!). And 110% to new member, Glenda Leete, who anchored Phil’s easel for an hour until she was shivering! I have to admit the rest of us painted in our cars. The rain front moving in over Lyall Bay did make an atmospheric subject! We deserve sunshine for our forthcoming Painting Mornings.

Our determination to ignore a wee chill in the air was evident at our latest Safari in Ohakune, when members ventured in many directions including the mountain slopes.

We were well warmed with good food and singing, as Kirsty and Karen’s article will tell.

We’re working on the next Safari for mid November and intending to go south. We’ll let you know when we have plans in place.

Our watercolour education courses go from strength to strength. Martin has been busy and brought in some exciting new tutors for our coming events: a vibrant lady, Robyn Eastgate-Manning and lively lad, Daniel Reeve, and a highly creative portrait artist, Eric Dyne. Also our smiling Chris Andersen is widening his subject from portrait to the ‘fuller figure’. Adrienne Pavelka is returning to take another two workshops for us. Details of all of these are below.

Course 1 8 WEEK – WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPES with Robyn Eastgale-Manning Tuesday 29 June – Tuesday 24 August (excluding Tues 3 Aug) (Term 3) This course will cover a wide range of exciting techniques to help you free up and discover new approaches to the tricky medium of watercolour.

Robyn will introduce a new method each week so come with an adventurous attitude and all your paints, especially transparent staining and non-staining colours in at least a warm and a cool of each primary colour. Subjects will be varied, including landscape, mountains, flowers and fruit and abstract. Bring any inspirational photos you have. Be aware you will not copy them but use them as reference.

Tutor' note: Robyn has painted and worked in the creative field all her life. She attended the School of Design in Wellington, Art school in Auckland and has taught watercolour, acrylic, oils, drawing, and pastel classes for the past 9 years at the Hutt Art Society, Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, and conducted private tuition from her Foxton studio.

Course 2 2 DAY – WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP – PORTRAITS with Eric Dyne This course will look at portraits with accent of understanding anatomy and drafting your portrait, followed by the application of watercolour techniques and producing your finished art. This will enable the participant to understand and accomplish accurate drawings for the painting of their subject.

Tutor's note: Eric Dyne has been a professional artist all his working life. Trained in the 1950’s and 1960’s by Fred Ellis, Carl Laugeson, James Coe, Bill Main and others in Fine Arts. In his early career he worked in calligraphy, packaging and commercial illustration. He was the Chief Artist, Government Printing Office in the late 1960’s, Art Director National Publicity Studios until 1987, when he formed his own company in graphics and illustration. Eric now undertakes commissions specialising in portraiture, caricature and landscapes.’

Date & time: Saturday 17 July and Sunday 18 July, 9am – 4pm (with breaks) Tutor: Eric Dyne Location: Wellington Art Club premises, 27 Chelsea Street, Miramar.

Cost: $160 (includes model cost one day).

Course 3 1 DAY – ‘LIMITED PALETTE’ WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP with Daniel Reeve Colour isn't everything! Less is more! In this single-day workshop Daniel will show us why tone is vital, while colour is an added bonus. How a painting can be beautifully harmonious within itself, rather than a garish confrontation between too many colours.

We'll examine the relationship between warm and cool. We'll see what can be done with only three colours. Then with only TWO colours!

Tutor's note Daniel is a freelance artist from Titahi Bay. He has been a member of Watercolour NZ for many years, and exhibits with us from time to time. His paintings are represented in private collections around the world and in the permanent collections of our own Parliament House and the offices of the Waitangi Tribunal. He is most well known for the calligraphy and cartography in various films, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Narnia movies, King Kong, Van Helsing and others; but he also does illustration and lettering work for advertising and for film merchandising, creates logos and fonts, and makes artworks on commission. Recently he has been the “resident artist” on some tours of New Zealand, combining Lord of the Rings tourism with teaching painting and drawing – a purely art-focused tour of the Far North is planned for this coming October. Course 4 8 WEEK – LIFE DRAWING & PAINTING with Chris Andersen Tuesday 31 August – Tuesday 19 October 2010. (Term 4) This course will include drawing and painting the female and male form, both clothed and nude in watercolour in various positions, reclined sitting and standing etc with both male and female models.

Tutor's note. After graduating from the School of Design Chris worked on major accounts for advertising agencies in Wellington and Auckland, including Colenso and McCann Erickson as an Art Director. Chris won various awards including a ‘Cleo’ for directing a commercial in Auckland.

Chris recently tutored a popular 8 week Watercolour Portrait course for Watercolour New Zealand and has tutored similar courses at the Wellington Art Club Date & time: Tuesday 31 August – Tuesday 19 October, 6 – 8.30pm.

Due to the overwhelming interest in Adrienne's courses, and her limited appearances in the North Island, we are giving preference to those who did not participate in the course that she conducted in Wellington in October 2009. We apologise to those who were keen to repeat a workshop with Adrienne.

SPLASH® 7 PLANS SHAPING UP We hope you are splashing around with a view to producing wonderful works for our October exhibition Splash® 7.

Your committee has been working on some exciting new ideas to keep our Splash®7 exhibition fresh for viewers and buyers. We have invited the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce "Business After 5" group to preview the paintings immediately prior to our general opening. Committee and members will host this function, at Shed 11 on Thursday 21 October.

The Season for Splash® 7 is Saturday 23 October to Sunday 31 October.

Details and a request for your assistance with the exhibition are on included on a separate sheet.

Awards available at Splash® 7 We have confirmation of the NZ Art School's Portrait Award of $500, the French Art Shop's People's Choice Award of $250 of art materials, the Gordon Harris Award of $500 and our Watercolour NZ Supreme Award of $1000. Watercolour NZ will also give $250 for the Emerging Artist Award.

Our guest artists at Splash® 7 this year are two well known Watercolour NZ members and regular exhibitors, John Rundle and Phil Dickson. Their individual artistic backgrounds and experience is outlined below.

John Rundle John started painting after leaving school and is completely self taught. After 10 years of part time painting, (4 days photography and 1 day painting), he started painting full time in 1977.

John paints in transparent watercolour, oil and gouache and his subjects are the mountains and bush country of both islands with the occasional urban, coastal or pastoral scenes. He also paints birds and animals and occasionally classic cars and aircraft.

John has had two awards in the National Bank Watercolour Competitions and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts' 1982 Caltex Award for Painting.

He has written, and illustrated with photographs, The Tararua Book. Millwood Press, 1981, illustrated with paintings and drawings The Mountains of the South with text by John Gordon, Random House,1993 and illustrated Tane’s Weta , a children’s book by Jennifer McIvor; Reed 2003. His watercolours feature in New Zealand in Watercolour by Dennis Robinson, New Holland, 2008.

John has tramped and climbed in the mountains of both islands especially the Tararua Range, Ruapehu and the mountains of South Westland and North-west Otago. He is a member of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club and the N.Z. Alpine Club. Has been a Mountain Safety Council instructor for over 40 years.

Phil Dickson Phil's inspiration comes from a lifetime's love of landscape, townscape, and the weather. He is largely self taught and from childhood had a fascination with skies and weather. A cartography career enhanced his eye for his surroundings.

Most of Phil's paintings are completed in the studio, but he also enjoys painting and sketching on location. The lighting, weather, time of day and season present all subjects, including familiar subjects in the moment like a snap shot.

Phil paints some townscapes as they once were years ago, featuring the buildings and traffic of an earlier time.

Phil paints in oils, watercolour and pencil, is a member and regular exhibitor at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and also exhibits with Watercolour New Zealand He is also an active member of Wellington Art Club and has tutored at classes and workshops as well as exhibiting at local art society exhibitions. His work featured in Wellington exhibitions with four other noted Wellington artists in 2001, 2003 and 2005 and a Solo Exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. As well as selling paintings from exhibitions and galleries, he also paints to commission. Some of his paintings have found their way overseas.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This year's AGM will be held on Sunday 25 July at Wellington Art Club, 27 Chelsea Street, Miramar. The day's events and times will follow the same pattern as the Sunday of last year's AGM. The meeting will follow one of our Monthly Painting Group Mornings which have proved so popular in recent years. If you are joining the Painting Group, meet at the Miramar Wharf near the Miramar cutting at 9.45am. The AGM at Wellington Art Club is near by where lunch will be at 12.30pm. Please bring something for a shared lunch, but please note that we will not be able to cook any food at the Art Club.

Wine, fruit juice, tea and coffee will be provided. The AGM will be at 1.45pm.

OHAKUNE SAFARI - 30 April to 2 May 2010 This year’s autumn 'safari' was to Ohakune with Base Camp at the Aorangi Ski Club.

It was there that the party of 30 (23 artists) gathered on the Friday evening for cosy drinks and nibbles by the fire. While most were from the Wellington area it was lovely to meet Maggie Dawson, Carole and Michael Cornes from Taupo, Jeanne-Marie Cantereau-Feran and Peter Feran from Thames, and Bernadette and Chris Parsons from Mercer. Thanks go to Pam Harlen for her inspired idea of the Aorangi Ski Club as a venue and organising the rooms. A special thanks to Maggie and Carole who were already hard at work in the kitchen when we arrived at 4 o'clock, preparing the magnificent Friday night dinner for us. Along with Lasagne was a delicious salad, (recipe below) followed by apple crumble and custard.

BROCOLLI SALAD 1 head broccoli (broken into florets) 1 red onion (finely diced) 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup raisins 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sugar 1 tbsp vinegar Mix the last three ingredients together, spoon over the salad and mix carefully.

The wise and experienced members of the group had arrived early or were up early on Saturday morning to sort out where they wanted to paint and catch the best light.

Others were slower to reach the starting point even with the beautiful hand-drawn maps prepared for us by Phil Dickson, cartographer, showing recommended painting sites in Ohakune and the surrounding area. It was a drizzle-laden autumn morning.

Some wandered down the slope to the village and painted in the shelter of shop verandahs or trees. The Ohakune railway station and the beautifully restored signal house were enticing subjects. In fact, a couple of watercolours now hang in the station cafe! The Overlander train stopped for lunch at the station and the crowd of travellers cruised around admiring the efforts of scattered painters. Meanwhile at Rangataua others enjoyed fresh pikelets baked by Jenny Dickson at their holiday house.

Another group left behind the picturesque village of Ohakune to be seduced by shades of rust and general decay at the wonderful car graveyard of Smash Palace otherwise known as Horopito Motors-Vintage Car Dismantlers. This was the setting for Roger Donaldson's 1982 film with Bruno Lawrence. Gumboots, a large umbrella and polar wear would have been a good idea here. Perhaps a porta-loo too! Exposed to all weathers, wet-in-wet technique came to the fore quite spontaneously.

In the evening we regrouped at Aorangi and, after drinks, wandered down to the Powderhorn Restaurant to sit at two long tables for a splendid dinner before returning to Aorangi for a most entertaining sing-along, courtesy of entertainer Chris Andersen of Chez Paris 1960’s fame, encouraged by his lively lady, Jenny. Next time will be even better as he'll remember his book of words!

Sunday was crisp and cool and the frontage of the Kings Hotel offered a little warmth and good views. Some artists and partners drove up the mountain road and painted, or at least photographed, the mountain in its new white coat of fresh snow. One group drove to see the Ratana Church in Raetihi and produced bold paintings of the red and white towers. And - the terrible truth must be told .... some took photos, went back to their cosy hotel room and painted from their laptops! Don't tell our outdoor painting organiser!

After Sunday morning’s painting we gathered for a fine exhibition of our weekend’s work – a display for ourselves and interested locals, including a reporter from the Ruapehu Bulletin. There were a few on-the-spot sales and later in the week an article in the local paper. As the afternoon sky brightened we headed home, tantalised by perfect painting subjects that flashed by the car. We pondered on the joys of weekend painting safaris and what wonderful paintings we could do if life was one long painting safari. A big thank you must go to Sue Wild and Watercolour NZ for making this one happen.

Congratulations Jacky does it again!

Jacky won three prestigious awards for her paintings at the Easter Show in Auckland: The Raye Hannam Memorial Trophy - best watercolour in the show and The Watercolour Open Award The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand Medal - for the most successful artist.

Each year Jacky takes another step up the ladder of success. We are proud to have her as a member and tutor. Congratulations Jacky and have a wonderful trip to India and Europe.

WELLINGTON WATERFRONT watercolourists welcome Good news!

The management of Wellington Waterfront Ltd have been delighted to have us painting and selling along the waterfront and are supporting us with enthusiasm.

They have increased our number of permits and extended our period for a further year. Allan Brown, Property Manager, encourages us to be there at any time and recommends the period round Christmas and New Year when there is plenty of tourist traffic. It’s a fun place to be, with passers-by very keen to watch and chat – and buy. New permits will be issued shortly.
