KOOD: AN INTEGRATED COMMUNE FOR THE SOCIAL OUTCAST Location: Thengaithittu, Puducherry, India Year: 2020-2021 Undergraduate Thesis Design Category: Social Project The design explores the idea of creating a co-existing safe space for the vulnerable communities that collaborates civil rights with architecture, creating a haven for the vulnerable communities of our society It justifies the need for such a safe space in the context of changing gender equations, the social norms and investigates how these changes are going to affect the social fabric and the social concept of family. The research also studies the architecture of community and co-existing spaces to understand the various typologies and forms such an architecture can take. In doing so, the focus has been on the needs of the user groups such as cooking spaces, hygiene spaces and accessibility. Simultaneously, the research tries to understand the role of the site and program in the narrative of co-existing spaces, and how different user groups engage or interact with each other.

Roof The roof is supported by a wooden substructure that is anchored to the concrete beams through metal plates. The material used for covering is Onduline sheets which is cheaper and best suited for the site’s climate.

Roof Frame Timber planks as pillars are screwed to the plates, and on these the different slats that make up the trusses are arranged. On these trusses support the wooden sleepers that hold the roof.

Terrace Ceiling The area in which the rooms are located is covered by a ceiling that, in turn, constitutes the floor of the upper terrace. It is RCC slab supported on the beams below. The beam is 0.23mx0.3m.

Beams On the load bearing walls, the reinforced concrete beams rest, with a section of 0.23x0.3m. They follow the 4x4 meter modulation, The gutter works like a beam structurally, and its slope empties into the two water tanks collecting rainwater.

Load Bearing Walls The modulation of the house is made up of 4x4m modules, making a total of 16. These modules in turn, are subdivided into an 80x80cm grid. On the foundation, the brick crosses that make up the pillars are located and In the same way they structure the spaces of the house, The bricks are 2315x15 cm in size. Foundation Foundation is used in the structure since the soil type in the site is clayey/loamy which is suitable for UCR Masonry foundation. Since the design explores different earth construction techniques the foundation is made of stabilised rammed earth technique. and concrete techniques . Residential Unit Axonometry

unEARTH - FAB BIENELLE Location: Famous Studios, Mumbai Year: 2018 International Exhibition Category: Collaborative Role: Design development, Installment of murals, event managment, FAB Biennale with the theme of OPEN presented new thinking and new materials as its anchor to fuel design flight. The month long festival hosted many exhibitions, movies and workshops. I got the oppurtunity to volunteer for one such exhibition by EdEn named unEARTH. The concept behind unEARTH was mind-boggling and eye-opening. It was only during the process of working on the installations, when I realised the importance and need to highlight and spread awareness on the central theme; wastage of resources. As an “artist” working on the installations I would definitely want the work to catch one’s attention and instantly strike the primary idea behind the way the installation had been designed. As a member of the team, it gives me satisfaction and a sense of pride that we could make it possible. The exhibition definitely increased my interest in the field of arts and architecture more than ever.

KUVAVALA KHANCHO POL HOUSING Location: Ahemdabad, Gujarat, India Year: 2017 Semester V Category: Tour Documentation Role: Drafting Elevations, On-site documentation Kuvavala Khancho is an intersection that had adjacent wells near Shantinathji ni Pol, giving it its name (kuva is well and khancha, passage). Interesting thing to see In Kuvavala Khancha is 4 homes opposite to each other with elements of Persian, Mughal, Maratha and European architecture reflecting the respective periods in which each facade was built, and the emblems of the earlier owners above the doors. This shows the cosmopolitan culture of old Ahmedabad. Also, you can see the Chowk (square) with the Parrot Holes on walls of the houses. Such holes were made available in exterior walls of each houses of Pol to allow Parrots (or any birds) to prepare their nests in absence of trees.
